Letter From The President Dear University Woman's Club Members, My hope is that your holidays were joyous , Merry and Bright and that you are today (January 9 as I am writing to you) enjoying the beautiful snow outside our windows. Stay Warm. I also hope that you have good books to read.. A friend gave me The Book of Joy which describes conversations between Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama. This exploration of joy with Bishop Tutu is espe-cially meaningful to me since a group of pilgrims (led by me from The Chapel of the Cross) visited with Bishop Tutu in his office in Cape Town, South Africa this past August. What a wonderful experience with this joyful spirit and holy man. The new semester is upon us and we have Four New Out of the Box Events planned for you for this semester as well as those already planned. T hey are: A New Mahjong Group led by Judy Tilson, The Ackland Museum led by Barbara Bell , The North Carolina Botanical Gar-den led by Delight Allen, and Vicarious Travel Around the World led by Carol Marshall .

Our Out of the Box Activities and Interest Groups are already on going now as are our Muse-um Groups to Nasher and NC Museum of Art. And don't forget the Duke Gardens Trolley rides and luncheons coming up in May along with the Out of the Box visits to The North Caro-lina School of the Arts on March 22 and the trip to the NC Zoo on May 3. Remember also that we have two other travel events this spring --- one, a bus trip to Greensboro on April 12 and another an overnight private car trip to Charlottesville, Virginia on May 1 and 2 . See more information on the next page.

Yes, the Out of the Box activities have been very popular, but do not hesitate to sign up. There are usually more who sign up than can be accommodated initially; however, we usually go to the alternate list as plans change and everyone gets a chance.

Coming up also this semester: 1) Our First Valentine's Day UNC Scholarship Fundraising Event, 5:00--7:00 , at the homes of Beverly Milton and Judy Tilson. 2) March 6, Program--Carolina Club --Speaker, Tar Heels' Head Field Hockey Coach, Ka-ren C. Shelton. She has led UNC to six NCAA Championships, 10 NCAA Runner up Finishes and 33 winning seasons. 3) April 18, Spring Luncheon. Our University of North Carolina President, Margaret Spellings will be our speaker. We are indeed fortunate to have President Spellings to speak with us. Overseeing our sixteen campus system since March 1, 2016 and known as an educa-tion leader and public policy expert, she is sought out to speak not only in NC but throughout the higher education world. She invites dialogue with her audiences and welcomes diverse viewpoints. You will not want to miss hearing President Spellings. I look forward to seeing all members at our first full monthly event on Valentine's Day for a "delightful and loving evening."

Many Exciting Educational and Cultural Things Are Happening.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Barbara Day, President

University Woman's Club, 2016--2017

On the Road Again…………….. Soon you will be receiving details and the reservation form for our One-Day Bus Trip to Greensboro on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. Our first stop will be a guided tour at one of the several beautiful Greensboro gardens. We’ll visit the O. Henry Hotel to see the lovely lobby and have lunch in the Hotel restaurant, the Green Valley Grill. After lunch we’re back on the bus for a short trip to the Greensboro Historical Museum, where we’ll have a guided tour. The Museum grounds also include the Mary Lynn Richardson Park, three free-standing buildings, and the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery. I’m sure I am not the only one who finds old cemeteries fascinating. On the way back to Chapel Hill, we will stop at Replacements, Ltd. I know there are those among us who have turned to our traveling campanion when passing that building and said, ―One of these days I’m going to stop and…‖ This may be your opportunity to finally locate the one missing piece that will allow you to complete your favorite set of dinnerware.
