The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls.

“WINTER,” BY SHAKESPEARE• Why is this poem included? • Shows a series of concrete details to help us experience this winter

life ourselves.• What point is raised and shown?• That poetry does not have to be either beautiful or contain any great

moral to be poetry.

“DULCE ET DECORUM EST”• First, simply note down why the poem is included in this

chapter, “What is Poetry.”• Again, what is the point? What are the authors using this poem to

SHOW us.

• Secondly, use this poem as your FIRST of THREE for poems to analyze this chapter.

Page 10: What is Poetry?

POETRY IS A MULTIDIMENSIONAL LANGUAGE• Poetry has at least four dimensions:

• Intelligence• Senses• Emotions• Imagination

• Ultimately, what qualifies as poetry depends on an informed reader. It achieves its extra dimensions by drawing more fully and consistently than ordinary language on a number of language resources (coming up in later chapters).
