The theorem of the streetlight

In the spring of 2011 I wrote that for our coun-try to be able to take a leap forward, we need-ed a government led by the economist anddean of the prestigious Bocconi University,Professor Mario Monti. I have been banging my headagainst the wall for having had such an absurd ides for almosta year. In the light of the damage that he and his cabinet havecaused the yachting industry, I’m tempted to quote the old,Italian adage, “we were better off when we were worse off.”To imagine a better Italy, where everyone keeps his place in aqueue, no one throws cigarette butts on the ground and, especially, where everyone pays his taxes, would be a verypositive thing. Unfortunately his utopian vision did not take intoaccount a society whosebest qualities are its vices. The boat tax was an enor-mous flop that had Italianyacht owners fleeing toother countries. But thething that brought ouralready ailing economy toits knees more than any-thing else was the limits oncash flow. Trying to catchthe tax evader when he’sspending rather than whenhe’s earning resulted in folkswith money keeping it wellhidden under the mattress. There are more than twohundred thousand people in Italy with liquid assets valued atmore than a million euro. Several of my friends who are big-name dealers told me that they would have been able to sellsome new boats, but had to refuse the sale because theywere unable to handle cash payments. That was money thatwould have officially gone back into circulation, generating fur-ther consumption. Far be it from me to defend illegal practices, but imagining being able to solve the problems by suddenlyblocking a sick economy like ours is pure illusion. Our ex-primeminister is an individual who has made virtue a way of life butthinking he could cure our society by killing our actual econo-my was the mistake of an amateur. In my humble opinion, heshould have made it clear to all Italians that their lifestyle wasunacceptable, by gradually tightening the grip on big

spenders, modifying the general fiscal situation and introduc-ing control mechanisms to limit tax evasion. These are unrea-sonable expectations in view of what’s happening in the worldtoday: more than five years of stagnation, a massive increasein unemployment and temporary work, the decline of the mid-dle class, the explosion of inequality. Where did this unreason-ableness come from and why do we put up with it? Since2007 there has been one crisis after another: the crisis of eco-nomic theory, the world financial crisis, the bank crisis and theEuropean sovereign debt crisis. The outcome has been dread-ful and we are facing the future with our eyes focused on thelight from the past. We will never find anything in that light if itdoes not light up the present. Our economic theories that have

been repeatedly proven falseby the facts of reality, and ourpolitics aimed at goals derivedfrom them, from the stabilizingof prices, from competitive-ness or from debt sustainabil-ity, are no longer in touch withwhat’s really going on or thereal needs of the people.More than ever before, weneed to face the situationwithout blinders. We need aclear and common policy. Wedon’t know whether PrimeMinister Enrico Letta will cometo inaugurate the Genoa BoatShow or whether he will dele-

gate a member of his cabinet or an undersecretary or a direc-tor-general. We do know that the war against our sector, pro-moted by a parade of television programs like the political talkshows Presa diretta, Piazza Pulita or Ballarò gives no sign ofletting up. Although we represent an industry of excel-lence, we have been grouped together as a band ofthieves and tax evaders. If he were to come, I would ask himto set up a campaign to support the manufacturers of luxurygoods that are bought by rich people all over the world for thegood of the poor workers who are getting poorer thanks to theholy moralizing furor that began with Professor Monti and endswith Giovanni Floris, by way of his militarized, leading col-leagues.

Francesco Michienzi

“If there is one thing worse than the modern weakening of major moral it is the modernstrengthening of minor morals” Gilbert Keith Chesterton, Tremendous Trifles, 1909

Unreasonableness andblindness have progressively createdthe inhospitable world we live ion today.

With few exceptions, we will continue, in spite ofthis and behave as if the world was still as it usedto be, that the crises we have beencontinuously passing through are nothing morethan a brief parenthesis, destined to close ontheir own quite soon.

We’ve gone global

Italian megayachts are exported all over theworld, and the whole world is their showcase.Because a 50-meter vessel was surely not made to sit in themarina or stick close to the coastline. This is why it is easy tofind an Italian-made or outfitted boat anywhere in the world: inthe Pacific, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean or the NorthAtlantic. Wherever they can go, they can also breakdown.Being able to respond to problems in real time and arrive tosolve them wherever they happen is fundamental for the suc-cess of a great yacht company. CGT Energia, the Italian dealerfor Caterpillar boat motors and generators, is dedicated tomeeting this challenge and has made world-wide service itscalling card. We spoke with Paolo Guidali, Pleasure Craft man-ager at CGT Energia.Modern yachts require a higher level of service than in thepast. How do you deal with this dynamic? Fortunately, we were born global, because our products are soldthe world over. So our interventions can be carried out anywherein the world: we need to be able to respond in real time to therequests of a highly demanding clientele that is always on themove and be able to solve any critical situation our customersmight encounter. First of all, breakdowns do not respect officehours or time zones. We have to be available 24 hours a day.Secondly, competence is paramount. We have to make sure thatthe person we send, no matter where the customer is, is a well-

trained technician who can handle the job. And thirdly, we haveto coordinate work hours, and not just our own: everybodyknows how difficult it can be to get service in Italy the week of the15th of August. Well, Fridays in Saudi Arabia is exactly the samething, just like the 4th of July in Florida or Hawaii. So in addition to providing call center services, you essen-tially have to act as cultural mediators…Well, that’s taking it a bit too far, but certainly in order to provideservices in an international world, you need to be able to forgerelationships based on trust. It is no longer enough to havetechnical know-how, nowadays knowing how to relate to otherpeople is fundamental. The various organizations around the world under the Catumbrella all follow the company line. Dedicated to sharing serv-ices, they are able to overcome geographical and culturalobstacles and establish trust-based relationships. What differentiates this relationship, in the world of yacht-ing, from the type of relationships found in other kinds ofnautical sectors? The “yacht factor” carries certain characteristics that definitelywere not designed to make our work easy. Someone who pur-chases a yacht, particularly in times of economic difficulty, havea particular kind of sensitivity. Their expectations are extremelyhigh, sometimes even exasperating. In dealing with our cus-tomers, we keep this in mind. On the other hand, we wouldrather take on a reasonable amount of risk if it makes the rela-tionship work. For example, we have sometimes chosen tosend a technician with spare parts to the other side of the worldbefore we had effectively verified the necessity, in order to besure to be able to guarantee quick, efficient service. For our part, we need to be reasonably sure that the customeris accurately following our instructions. Moreover, since we alsoservice products other than our own, we have found that whenwe have established a good working relationship with the client, they are likely to replace their motors and generators, when thetime comes, with our products. I would say that oftentimes it isthe service that stimulates the sale. Or, in any case, if a servicecustomer becomes a purchaser, it is a good indication that theywere pleased with the service.

August 29 With the wind at about eight knots and clear skies, the firstregatta in the program prepared to launch. The starting line waspositioned off the coast from Porto Cervo from which the yachtsthen headed off at a rapid clip towards Secca dei Tre Monti, about 50 kilometers away. Watching them round the buoys wasbreathtaking, with the Maltese Falcon stealing the scene fromthe other contestants and the P2 shooting out ahead of the restof the fleet towards the bowline buoy. When she reached it, the

P2 had more than an hour’s advan-tage over her closest follower, butwhen the corrected time was fac-tored in, this elegant, 38-meter, alu-minum sloop slipped into secondplace behind the Silencio. GherardAndlinger, owner of the P2, the firstyacht of the Racing Line to bedesigned by Philippe Briand, smilesand declares himself satisfied with hisboat’s performance, even if first placewas snatched away from him fromwhat, ironically, had been his “old”

yacht, the Silencio (formerly called Perseus). On the other hand,Dawn Riley’s tactics aboard the Silencio displayed the sailingexpertise she acquired in participating in the America’s Cup, giv-ing the decisive edge to the gratifying results for this 50-meterketch. Third place, in corrected time, went to the 52-meterTamsen, with her motley, 60-person crew! At the end of the day, the crews challenged each other to acocktail contest, with us journalists as judges. Besides being

great sailors, the crews proved to be excellent party hosts!

August 30 Italy has become a tropical country; we may as well accept it.Shortly after the start of the race, with nearly all the yachts stillmoored, a storm broke loose in Porto Cervo as sudden as itwas violent with gusts of wind over 40 knots and rain pouringdown in buckets. There was some trouble with the moorings,a few knocks and bumps among the yacht, but fortunately noreal damage. In the calm after the storm, all the vessels put tolead-grey sea under an even more leaden sky but… there wasno wind. The race was cancelled. Aboard the Helios we were

A short chat on the wharf with Giancarlo Ragnetti,CEOof Perini Navi GroupWhy do you hold the Perini Cup? The event was inaugurated in 2004 with the goal of bringingtogether a good number of our yacht-owners so that they couldget to know one another and over the course of the years, itbecame a competition with competent and aggressive crews whoreally know how to sail these yacht to their best advantage. Thenumber of yachts signed up shows just how successful thisinitiative has been, attracting participants as much for the spirit ofcompetition that fills the air during the regatta as for theatmosphere of friendship established between everyone involved, from the yacht owners to the members of the Perini team, fromthe sponsors to the journalists that come from all over the worldto participate in this event. The regatta shows how our greatcruising sailboats, each one with its own unique characteristics, are also extraordinary sea-steeds, capable of amazing feats. ThePerini Navi Cup, now in its fifth edition, has become a majorappointment on the international calendar of ocean-going sailingyacht events and the incredible energy the organizers dedicate tocreating it have once again paid off handsomely, as evidenced bythis year’s resounding success. Why was the Costa Smeralda chosen as the location for thisrace? The Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo are among the favoriteplaces of owners of large yachts from all over the world who havebeen meeting here year after year for a long time. The Yacht ClubCosta Smeralda, moreover, is the perfect partner for organizingsport and social events of international importance such as thePerini Navi Cup. Finally, the location offers a variety of regattafields which are perfect, both for the wind conditions there andfor the splendid natural beauty: an ideal setting for the jewelscreated by Perini!

offered a great lunch to make up for having missed a greatsports event. The day ended festively with a gala dinner forowners and guests at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, withmusic and dancing far into the night.

August 31 Blue skies and calm seas are not very promising, but patience(the sailor’s greatest virtue) pays off and after a couple of post-ponements, the race is finally launched. Aboard the P2, theyacht I am on, they are fervently preparing for the race. Thecaptain, Jonathan Kline, gives instructions and encouragementto a crew of about 20 members, plus the owner – who nevermisses a race – and his lovely family. “We need to give it our alland sail twice as fast as our direct opponent… our handicap ishigh so we have to race against ourselves to show off the P2’sgreat potential!” Unfortunately some gusts of wind slowed theP2 down and she had to settle for a disappointing 5th place inadjusted time. Silencio wins again and takes the highest posi-tion on the podium. Her owner, new to sailboat racing, arriveson the pier full of enthusiasm for the experience and excitedabout his boat’s result. He expressed his specific intention toparticipate in further regattas. The final classification sees the Silencio in first place, followedby the P2 and the Parsifal IV. Due to a series of factors whichwould be too difficult to explain here in just a few lines, theresults were particularly disappointing for the Seahawk, a flam-ing, 60-meter, freshly launched vessel, as well as for Nauta’selegant, 30-meter, carbon-fiber Xnoi. At some distance from thefrontrunners, the Maltese Falcon came in, although she haddominated the Perini Cup in 2006, 2009 and 2011.

Perini ships are highly

technological boats and

"Hey guy, what do you have there? The LunaRossa spinnaker polef?" An old cyclist, once racer, nowrepairman of bicycles, asked me this one morning a few yearsago. I was coming out home on the bike and I carried an alu-minum tube that resembled a pole with me. It was in the year2000 and Luna Rossa challenged Paul Cayard at first and thenNew Zealand in the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland. At night the RAIbroadcast the regattas, taking away the sleep and forcing us tostay awake at times until the first light of dawn. It is strangebecause despite being a rather boring show, with postponeddepartures for hours due to the wind absence, many peopleremained glued to the television. It was such a powerful event, from the point of view of the media, which resembled theRischiatutto of Mike Bongiorno, when in the Italian cinemas onThursday night it was necessary to project the TV program first, otherwise the viewers would have no longer filled the cinema towatch a film. It seems as if centuries have passed from then. The America's Cup has just ended, but no one noticed it. Veryfew teams in the race, regattas that didn’t excite even the closerelatives of the crew and no television that transmits the livebroadcast. They could not even sell the rights , because no onewanted them. No one was willing to spend on an event des-tined to fail. How was that possible? It took only two editions tobreak the toy. In Valencia, during the 33th edition, they have

spent more time in court than in water. The contenders weretwo billionaires: Larry Ellison and Ernesto Bertarelli. The verdictof the race sealed the victory of Ellison and then they startedwith the catamarans imagined by Russell Coutts , the mostfamous America's Cup helmsman. It was supposed to be aguarantee, but things turned out differently. Ellison promised atleast 16 teams, but when they got in the water there were onlytwo: New Zealand and Luna Rossa. In late July, Artemis was added. The Louis Vuitton Cup was alsostained with blood with the tragic capsizing that took the life ofAndrew Simpson from the Swedish team. Only then it wasthought to fix a maximum level of wind, beyond which they wouldnot have carried out the races. The catamarans were too fast, toohard to handle and too dangerous. But the AC72 are still fragileand complicated boats. Coutts decided that there would havebeen the rigid wing in place of the mainsail and so it was. Theteams went crazy just to put it in the hangar at the end of theevent. It's not easy moving a wing of 40 meters. It is probably alsovery expensive. The Louis Vuitton final between New Zealand andLuna Rossa finished with a tennis score in favor of New Zealandand the races were won only for the breaks of the other competi-tor. Too much technology on board, too much electronics, all toodelicate for a multi-hull that glides over the water at 70 miles perhour. Coutts has deleted the spirit of the Cup. The match raceof which he is master, is made up of sailors who compete in pre-start with spectacular rotations and gybes. The match racing hasalways excited us for extremely harmonious teams, able tomaneuver in a fraction of a second, for the tens of turns on theedge upwind performed by those who were behind, for the almostsimultaneously buoy passages with lifts of spinnaker and haulingdown of genoa. The super-technological and fragile as crystal AC72 made us forget all this. Hopefully the whims of ScroogeMcDuck will give way to common sense. The next edition mustbe cheaper if you want greater participation. And above all it mustbe done on boats where the skill of sailors and helmsmen can stillbe decisive for the victory. In short, give us back an America's Cupwith a human face and not a hyper technological toy! For thatthere are already videogames. At the press time of this issue, Emirates Team New Zealand hasstarted the final of the America's Cup in a great way winningclearly the first four races competing with a wind over 15 knots.James Spithill, the Australian who steers Oracle, could not resistDean Barker. Below, Luna Rossa clearly beaten by EmiratesTeam New Zealand.

always born from the desireto save as many vintageboats as possible. Unfortu-nately in fact, around 20years of seniority, a vesselarrives at its lowest point ofassessment and therefore itis the point where there is agreater possibility that theseboats will be destroyed, asfor example the old taxi ofMilan or the old Venetiangondola. By establishing the borderin 25 years to capture thevalue of seniority, theyhope to convince the shipowners to hold on foranother 5 years until it canfinally be considered "avintage boat." The ASDEC wasborn from the needto do something tosave old boats; it is inall respects an importantcultural operation in order topreserve the nautical tradi-tions.At the basis of ASDEC phi-losophy there is the passionto possess, but above all tokeep antiques in general. Infact, often those with a vin-tage boat have also a vin-

Alsothe past of the boat, itsimportance and whether itbelonged to someonefamous, are other factors tobe considered. Also theoriginality of all the technicaland architectural aspectsand the state of preserva-tion. 25 years of seniority isthe limit for boasting thetitle of vintage boat. This is

The centralmoments of the associationare the gatherings of motor-boats and the racings of vin-tage boats. The first meeting wasorganized in Bocca diMagra in Liguria at theend of the '80s. The firstvintage sailing regattatook place in 1992 onLake Como in Gravedona. The ASDEC meetings aim atbringing owners togetherunited by a common pas-sion. During the meeting, inaddition to beautiful sailingson lakes or lagoons, com-petitions of regularity or sea-manship are also organized, but never of speed becausethis will destroy the historicboats. But ASDEC real goal wasand is to reward the “true

vintage boat” through a“Certification” with a finalscore; some guidelineshave been established in anevaluation board. Thisassessment, made by ourexperts, makes the analysisof a large number of objec-tive factors about the qual-ity of the boat. It is notassumable that the oldestboat should necessarily bethe “more vintage”. It hasbeen done in a way so thatthe interest of the ownerswho wanted to take over acup or recognition, wasstimulated to improve thecertification score by main-taining their vintage boat inthe most correct way, thuscontributing to what it wasand still is the aim ofASDEC: saving traditionalboats and their history. The Italian designstudio will sign thenew projects of theLigurian shipyard, from the new 50/60 footentry-level fiber-glassyacht to the Sanlorenzo 62Steel which is already inthe advanced stage ofdevelopment and design.«Looking at the nauticalmarket - said Micheli – wehave realized that there area lot of boats with linesoften confused. Our ideacomes from there: think ofa boat without exaspera-tion, with the maximumclean lines, just a simpleand elegant object. I remember I had twosuitcases full of clothes and items for my trip:without thinking too much I emptied both, fill-ing them with colors to bring back to Italy, where they arrived only two years later.” Ser-gio Sarri from Turin, born in 1938, in the earlysixties he took a trip which lasted two yearsand opened him the doors of Europe, with

Bern and Paris where he attended painting classes, by thengoing overseas. The trip to the States is for him the dis-covery of a new world, of something wonderful and awe-some that our Peninsula would know only long after: thefuture. “It all started from there, I came to this strange worldwhere my approach to reality had to be completely differentfrom what I had used before that time. There were technolo-gies of which I had no knowledge, machines and equipmentI had never seen. Also New York was experiencing the explo-sion of pop art in those years: my art, in fact, comes fromthere. Until then I had painted, but in a confused way... dur-

“Iing my journey I realized I had to start painting what hap-pened, the new that was moving forward.”And so the adventure begins with an exhibition of his worksin Rome and L’Aquila, in events that present the new gener-ations of artists, passing through Saint Paul de Vence, wherehe presented the triptych The Adventures of None, thencoming to the important Florentine event in 1972. Here, atthe Sangallo Gallery, he exhibited in a collective with Alinari,Ghelli, Adami, Matta and Vasarely. In the same year he exhib-ited in Bologna with a personal and in Milan, in the exhibitionThe metamorphosis of the object, which include the worksof artists such as Balla, De Chirico, Rotella, Magritte, Dalì andWarhol. And then Amsterdam, Paris, New York, in a crescen-do that flows into an international success. Enthusiast andstrong connoisseur of cinema, in 1968, he engaged himselfin the production of experimental and provocative films (Up-up and away, The stories of Varazze, The Adventures ofNone, Vostock) and from the same passion his comics pro-ductions aroused, focusing precisely on movie characters, published on international journals and signed with the pseu-donym SeSar. He was Professor of Artistic Anatomy at theBrera Academy in Milan. He currently lives in Calice Ligure,in the province of Savona. How would you describe the relationship between manand machine, and with technology, focus and logicalthread of your entire production?I represent the relationship between human - that I have oftencalled inhuman - and machines as a symbol of division, thenmoving to the representation of the relationship between manand artificial in general. ity in my paintings: he is always seen through photos, cinemaand television, he is himself artificial. Who looks at the paintingmust grasp its essence and reach his own conclusions. Thepainting is an object to look at, which should mainly attract forits aesthetic charm, by fostering a feeling of harmony or shock, depending on whom is looking at it.From whom do you feel influenced from an artistic point ofview? From Giotto onwards, all the painters have influenced me. Theartist is a drop in the vast sea of art, that makes the search fornew solutions go forward and new ways for people to expressthemselves through painting.Which search did the movies produced in 1968 express? My films wanted mostly to provoke, they were an expression ofthe free cinema of those years, when they realized everythingbut the film. They were used to attract people to meetings andconferences that proliferated in that year. These films were with-out sound, without a true story, without unnecessary super-structure, where the fascination of the image exceeded the nar-rative. David Lynch is the one who has raised this way of mak-ing movies. Is your artistic work the bearer of a moral message?I will not give a review of what I represent, and I never wantedto do it. “Machines” are now part of our life, of our everydaylives, this is now the world where we live. The real objectivenessis constantly manipulated by the media reality. Mine is anacceptable pessimism... maybe because artificial means willsave us.

Side door with a pantograph openingupwardThis is the Besenzoni’s proposal to leave space to thewalkway on the boat deck. The opening upward is the idealsolution for boats where the design of the deck does notallow for wide wales: when it is open, the door providesaccess without obstacle; at the same time when it is closed itis almost invisible on the surface of the flank. The size andfeatures vary according to the specific requirements of theshipyard (it is a customized product). Suitable for boats from30 meters long, it includes as an optional a sensor thatsignals the opening / closing of the door, a very useful itemwhen you are aboard a large yacht. The electro-hydraulic handling is done automatically by abuilt-in push-button integrated in the wall of the cabin, thehandling arms are made of stainless steel, while the aluminumframe with side automatic pawls is mounted on a frame sealholder which makes the tool resistant to attrition.www.besenzoni.it

In addition, the Ultracommunicates directly via MasterBus with theMastervolt battery charger, ensuring the bestrecharging capability. It also offers savings of up to70% in space and weight compared to lead-acidbatteries, making its installation on board easy.At the Genoa International Boat Show Mastervolt willpresent the new batteries 12/2.500 of MLI Ultra range.

“Shadow Chasing” awningOPAC is launching an awning sail "shadowsearching” on the international market, adjustable depending on the placement of theyacht to the sun. The structure is supported bypoles in aluminum or steel fitted with an"intelligent" mechanism that can handle the

positioning of the sail to favor the shading of theopen areas. The structure includes three poles at least, designed and engineered by OPAC’s technicalstaff, which present inside one or two slidingmechanisms where one end of the fabric of theawning canopy will be hooked up.The three proposed solutions are:1.Manual:manual release and incline on eachsupport pole using manual actuators.2.Semi-automatic: the posts contain inside anelectrical device moved by a remote control; theslope of the canvas is adjusted by pressing theguide buttons on each pole.3. Automatic (scheduled for summer 2014), thesystem is composed of an automatic

mechanism controlled by an electronic controlunit interfaced with solar trackers. It will allow theorientation of the canvas following both thepositioning of the boat in relation to the sun, and, during the day, the position of the sun to its Azimut so as tofavor the shading of the area below the awning. The electronic logic allows to manage theascent and descent of the ends of the fabricon the support poles in an independentmanner according to the orientation of the sunor, in the case of an anchored boat, when theboat is moved by the wave motion. In bothcases the automatic directionality of the "sail"guarantees the constant ideal shading.www.opacgroup.com

assionate and unconven-tional, known for creatingboats which have left anindelible mark on world nauti-cal history, Fulvio De Simoni –born in La Spezia but living inMilan – acquired his first boat atage of 14. He later turned hispassion into a job with initialimportant projects in sailboats

before he moved on to motor yachts. His true career began in 1972 in Milan atAlberto Marcati’s studio. He has been the soleowner of Italprojects in Milan since 1983 spe-cialising in developing projects in the field ofhi-tech industrial shipping. To date he has putalmost 3000 boats in the water.

You have more than 40 years experience inthe nautical world, many of which have

been with Pershing. This year you’re cel-ebrating 30 years of partnership andalmost 2000 boats under this brandname alone. How did it all start?Tilli Antonelli and Fausto Filippetti, who worked in a boat yard whichI’d made a few boats for, set up ontheir own and asked me to designsome boats for them which wereto be their company’s debut. Theywere around 45 foot long which felt

to us like the right size to appeal to agood number of buyers.

How did this type of boat develop? In a slightly different way to what is

believed: we conceived a boat which was to be probablymade in two forms ( open and closed). It was the formerwhich was made first and it was an instant success grab-bing the attention of a really large number of clients. Can we say that the DNA of that boat is still there in today’sboats?Yes, partly, because we’ve always tried to make innovativeboats and that one was strikingly so. At that time, therewere no open 45-foot boats with three cabins and threebathrooms, a central engine which could be navigatedquite quickly with limited power. It was suitable for a widerange of people: young families with money and largerfamilies because it had slightly more inside space than wasusual at that time. The result was that for several years wecreated many boats with these characteristics without everequalling, however, the success of Pershing 45’.Being innovative has meant that many rival boatyards, par-ticularly foreign ones, have taken specific elements fromyour designs and made them their own. Are you pleasedabout that?On one hand, undoubtedly, but on the other hand, I’m sadto note that once you could recognise a Pershing at seafrom a long way off and now you can’t.Over the last 30 years, the nautical world has changed alot and Pershing is an example. We have to remember thatonly 10 years ago the boatyard’s flagship was an 88-footboat and now there are 115-foot boats or bigger, on thedrawing board. What do you see as the most significantelement in this transformation? For me it’s not a question of design but the fact that, over thelast few years, engines have become more and more pow-erful as if the problem of consumption – and thus of cost –were secondary. It has been almost a matter of competing tomake boats with ever lighter but more powerful engines.

one of the most imitated

stylistic elements of De

Simoni and later allowed

greater freedom in the

design and style of boats. At

the bottom, the boat speed.

As far as the rest is concerned there has obviously been aneed to create new shapes because they are taken up bythe market more quickly and the boat which sells best inany boatyard is always the latest model whatever the qual-ity. In this field people are always looking for somethingnew. What have been the distinguishing features of theboats of the time and what are they today? One by one certain standards have been thrown out andothers taken on board. A distinctive feature from the begin-ning was the arched shape of the side panel which wasused for the first time by Pershing 70’ a great many years

ago and which I think has influenced the nautical worlda great deal. For years no

o p e nb o a t s

came out of the boatyards which were without this distin-guishing characteristic. If I’m not mistaken the 70’ had another important inno-vative characteristic: it was a turbine yacht. We can certainly say that we made a model of this boatwith a turbine which was quite unusual at the time for thatsize of yacht, in fact it didn’t exist at all. It also had a sin-gle central engine while another governed two stern driv-ers which were totally extractable for getting out of portsand manoeuvering while the turbine was only used for get-ting up to high speed. It could navigate at more than 50/55knots which was an incredible performance in those days. The shape of the boats you design is closely linked tofunction. That’s right. I’ve never simply designed the style of a boat.I’ve always thought of the boat as a whole because insideand outside are inseparably linked: for example, portholesand windscreens can’t just be put in anywhere but thereare a number of interrelated situations.Until ten or so years ago there was no need to create

all the space that’s required today andthis is something which

penalises the technicalaspect a little.

Yes and it’s a problem. Ithink that this search for ever

greater space should be limitedbecause it leads to a homogenized

market. If we think of cars there are 8,6 and 4 seater vehicles and even 2 seaters

which might all be the same length. In boating, there’s a tendency to think that boats with a certain

size have to have certain elements and characteristicsso that even the latest Pershing boats are very big. I’d like togo back to the original spirit of the shipyard with more sportylooking boats even though as far as performance is con-cerned the brand has always remained at the top.

Pershing is synonymous with speed. There’s some-thing dynamic even about the name and the brand wasborn with this spirit together with a highly technologi-cal connotation. Has this principle been maintainedover time?I would say that it has. Pershing’s products are recogniz-ably high quality and high performance although this is notabsolute of course. There are lighter motorboats which, however, only offer speed. Pershing’s most important mustis speed with the greatest possible comfort. If you had to think of a further evolution of your way ofdesigning, what type of boat would emerge? To tell the truth we’re studying an innovation in the style ofhigh performance boats which will be a surprise and a fur-ther step forward for Pershing as far as recognisability isconcerned so that those who copy us won’t be able to

deny that it was our idea.In your career there’s a model which could be con-sidered an icon, the 88’, which was on the frontcovers of nautical magazines the world over. It isone of very few products which can be considered“ a collector’s item”.That’s right. There was even an owner who really want-

ed one but as it was no longer being produced hebought a used one to put with his Ferraris and the most

attractive Italian designs. I remember too that when I leftthe Festival de La Plaisance of Cannes port in this boat ,which no one had yet seen, there was a round of applausefrom the various competitors because it was truly differentfrom all the others and it was in silver which was new at

Pershing The Yard designs, produces and markets luxury openmotor yachts. The products are characterized by highperformances , constant styling research, use of the finestquality materials and interior design aimed at high levelsof comfort. The methods of construction, the engines ableto reach 12,000 hp and the use of surface propellers, hydrojets and gas turbines make these yachts really sporty andable to reach a top speed of 55 knots. The history of this brand came from the idea of threefriends who were boating enthusiasts: in 1981 TilliAntoneli, Fausto Filippetti and Giuliano Onori set up theCantieri Navali dell’Adriatico and launched the first boat. Two years later, in 1983, they met Fulvio De Simoni, andthe Pershing idea was born. So the first 45’, a greatsuccessful open boat , which was the first to offer a newway to experience comfort and privacy, until then an

exclusive prerogative of the classic motor yacht, wasdesigned. In the early 90s began a policy ofinternationalization towards Mediterranean countries, the United States and the Far East. In 1998 the companybecame part of the Ferretti Group. The boats are manufactured in the Mondolfo plant(located just in front of the first historic site), a futuristicarea of 55,000 square meters – of which more than38,400 square meters are outdoors - designed bySandro Sartini. The production site has a spray booth of440 square meters where the boats are dry painted. The tank test (33 m long, 7.50 wide and 2.30 metersdeep) is used for all hydraulic (engines, exhausts, bilgesand generators) and waterproofing tests of the yacht. The travel-lift, which has a capacity of 130 tons, completes the tasks with hauling and launching into thetank.

«The sea is a test that

say that any change that is

similar change at the hull

I know people who after a

unusual performance for this type of

This generation’s open all derive from that boat alittle I think. What is the main characteristic of the new 62’ whichhas just been launched? This boat is part of the evolution of the last 2/3 years. We’ve simply tried to start reducing the size compared tothe 64’ and it’s a bit lower and a bit wider. It puts the fin-ishing touches to the most recent styles and could, per-haps, be the last with this particular style.None of the brand’s boats are completely open. Why?Pershing was created as a profoundly Italian and Mediter-ranean boat. To think that there are really a great many seas and situa-tions which are similar to the Mediterranean where com-pletely open boats can be successful is perhaps pre-sumptuous. Until the market starts up again I think that acompletely open boat will not sell well. What does excellence mean?Knowing with absolute certainty that we are a referencepoint for this range of boats. Obviously excellence meansbuilding quality of the yard. What do you love most about this job?It allows you to see your ideas come to fruition in relative-ly short time frames, particularly if you compare it to other

sectors. I’ve heard about a 180 metre boat made in 28months. Making a boat of this type and seeing it in thewater in such a short time is a great satisfaction from aplanning and intellectual point of view. In the past it tookdecades to build a castle and those who designed it did-n’t survive to see it finished...Do you look after all the details of the boat personal-ly?I do everything that Pershing allows me to, in the sensethat this shipyard is part of a large industrial group whichhas top level professionals working in it and it’s right thateach of them should work in the field in which they excel. What I like to see is that the final result corresponds to myexpectations.

Royal Huisman, the shipbuilders chosen to make this long-helddream come true, is an internationally rec-ognized icon for the construction of largesailing yachts, both ultramodern and clas-sic. The pristine boatyard in Vollenhove

We couldlist dozens of prestigious yachts designed by the yard’sresident naval architect, Gerry Dijkstra, but we will stickwith one that represents the epitome of his visionary work:

the Maltese Falcon. Built by Perini, the Maltese Falcon isstill considered the apotheosis of yacht design of the 21stcentury. We conclude this cavalcade of figures involvedin the creation of Pumula with a pair of extremely talentedinterior designers, Jonathan Rhoades and Dick Young, internationally renowned and applauded for the eleganceof their signature sailing and motor yachts (we highly rec-ommend taking a look at their website: www.rhoadesy-oung.com).The first request the designers got from the future ownerswas to create a yacht that evoked strong emotions, com-municating the romantic notion of voyages to farawayplaces, while at the same time, being constructed accord-ing to state-of-the-art standards. Dijkstra is not new to such endeavors, having alreadydesigned an exquisite reinterpretation of J Class yachts, but this time the goal was to match a by-gone atmosphere

with modern functionality. The result is an elegant cutterover 37 meters long, characterized by a sleek, dynamic sil-houette with sharp bow and counter stern. Beneath herclassic sailing yacht appearance, Pumula has an Alustarlight aluminum alloy hull and a carbon fiber mast, 48meters tall, produced by Rondal. Her captain, Michael van Bregt, stresses that each aspectof her design has been created with the utmost attentionto finding a happy balance between functionality andesthetics. If, on the one hand, a bit of headroom was sac-rificed in the engine room, no compromises were madewith regards to installing state-of-the-art electronic instru-mentation and on-deck hardware and equipment designedto guarantee top sailing performance. Pumula was born totake on rough seas like those that surround the Spitsber-gen Islands, destination of her maiden voyage, and every-thing has to work perfectly to ensure a safe and comfort-able journey. As we know, the process of creating a yacht from thedrafting board till she puts out to sea takes years, andoften over the course of this time, significant modificationscan be imposed. story about her name. The original name of the project was“bugamena,” a Zulu word indicating something big (bothmaterially and morally). When they realized how small theyacht was compared to the ocean she would be sailing, the owners, like “real sailors,” opted for the name Pumula, which in Zulu means peace and rest. The choice of a namereflecting Zulu tradition is not an affectation but comesfrom the strong ties the owners, a lovely European couple, have with the country of South Africa.Although her exterior lines are sleek for fast sailing, Pumu-la’s interiors are permeated with an atmosphere of peaceand serenity, as the name suggests. The super modernequipment on deck by Rondal, cleverly inserted into a clas-sical context, allows the boat to be handled easily even byonly two people, no matter what kind of wind or weatherconditions she is faced with. The retractable keel allowsdraft to vary from 5m to a mere 3m for access to shoaldraft anchorages. la is and intends to remain a yacht in which, beyond thestate-of-the-art technology and electronic devices, the skilland sensitivity of the crew is considered of the utmostimportance. Speaking of the crew, we should mention howmuch thought was put into creating the crew cabins, locat-ed in the prow. A few steps lower than the small, lower-deck saloon, it houses a starboard crew mess, followed bytwo lovely cabins, one of which is a double for the captainand his wife, Charlotte, who is serves as chef, stewardessand is also a licensed captain herself. On the owner’s insistence, no distinction has been madebetween the areas for passengers and crew, who thusshare life onboard with no formalities. I have to say, thisis a yacht owner with real class! The interior layout, also in view of this choice to favor crew-passenger cohabitation, is extremely linear and makes thebest possible use of all the available space. Her waterlinelength is 27.4 meters and to keep her lines sleek, Pumulahas a low freeboard and the hull itself has a very sleekwaterline to guarantee optimum performance.

“Our challenge was to inte-grate the required accommo-dations into the confines of alimited volume of space,” diceJonathan Rhoades. “Theshared living spaces are cozyand comfortable. Indoor andoutdoor areas, in contrast tothe tendency in modern yachtdesign to integrate them, aredistinctly separated, in linewith traditional designs. Lightpours into the dining from thedeckhouse windows, but ifyou go down just a few steps, the natural light comes in

through charming oval portlights. The interiors are cozyand intimate, with rooms that seem to gather you in awarm embrace. The furniture, designed by the able hands of JonathanRhoades and Dick Young, reflects a distinctly nautical style.Simple yet elegant, there is an abundance of wood, pas-tel-shaded fabrics and sophisticated and finely-crafteddetails such as the leather-clad night tables reminiscent ofantique steamer trunks. The main saloon takes up theentire area of a classically designed deckhouse with slight-ly curved windows, with a bright dining area dominated bya large, solid oak dining table and a chart table that whennecessary can double as a breakfast nook, fitted with nav-igational and communication instruments. Instead of theusual mahogany, both the furniture and the wide floor-boards are made of oak which has been waxed and treat-ed to give it an antique look. For the floor, the boards cho-sen were particularly knotted and veined, easier to makelook “worn.”

“It wasn’t a simple procedure,” explains Jonathan Rhoad-es. “We only managed to come up with this “aging” solu-tion by much trial and error. We tried wood stains and tea, honey to fill in the grooves, and finally found success withbeeswax. We ended up with a warm hue, with differentnuances for the furniture and the floor, and smooth, nice-feeling surfaces and non-skid floors (all the carpentry workwas carried out by expert artisans in the boatyard work-shops).” Heading below to the lower deck, we find ourselves in asweet little sitting room that leads to a large cabin and tothe galley which, if necessary, can be directly connected tothe lounge area by opening a sliding door over the portsidewet bar. Facilitating getting in and out of the water or boarding thetender is a starboard hatch accessible from the deck bymeans of a carbon fiber ladder. This simple and functionalsolution, created with both intelligence and style, is anoth-er indication of how luxury aboard Pumula is a question ofquality and not ostentation: nothing is any more compli-cated than what is strictly necessary, automation has beenlimited to serving a few maneuvers to handle the massivesails (the total area of the sails is 748 sq m), the jib furlerand mainsail, and to regulate the stays and shrouds. Thequality of this yacht is evident in every phase of its realiza-tion, from the drawing board to the water, by way of metic-ulous construction, fine materials and excellent workman-ship. Thanks to the skill and knowledge of her creators,Pumula is not an imitation of a vintage yacht: she is asplendid contemporary classic.

It is a placethat stirs deep emotions, and knowing how to enhance theseemotions is indeed a gift. Just like Vivaldi did with his FourSeasons. The amplitude of the master cabin and lavish bath, along withthe ingenious positioning of the windows, providing abundantdaylight and an unbeatable view, are surely among the high-lights of the vessel. The five vertical windows mean the wallsare virtually all glass for a “full immersion” effect. All the cab-ins are outfitted with portholes that open to let in plenty offresh air. The starboard cabin holds twin beds and a thirdMurphy bed, lots of storage space and a bathroom with sep-arate shower, while the portside cabin holds a queen-sizedbed. There’s no shortage of large windows and openableportholes belowdecks. The picture windows in the VIP cabin, located forward, aresituated laterally, with the head of the queen-sized bed inthe center, positioned towards the bow. The pvc foam sandwich, however,is used for the deck and for the superstructure. The bulkheads of the engine room and thecollision are in a sandwich of wood. The layout of the main deck was designed to enhance thelivability of the space by exploiting the use of light as a pri-mary feature. The cockpit, with its teak walkways, sports alarge sofa, aft, and a dining table that seats eight. Veryimpressive are the two full-length (1.6 x 2 m) windows whichprovide the dining area with loads of natural light and breath-taking views. throttle her acceleration is on par with smaller andsleeker boats. At just under 2,200 rpm the second tur-bines kick in. You can’t help but notice them, not onlybecause of the whistle emanating from the engine room, but in particular from the immediate sensation of thrust asshe accelerates through the water. Naturally consumptionis affected by displacement and performance, but a quickcalculation reveals that she can go 220 nautical milesbefore refueling, if kept at a cruising speed of 26 knots, which is certainly not slow for a 24-meter yacht. Her fueltank holds 6,000 liters while the fresh-water tank has an1,100-liter capacity. Whether she took the waves head on, laterally or frombehind, her running attitude remained so steady that evenher wake stayed straight and linear and not even a drop ofspray reached the fly. Her stability in turning is impressive:considering a mass of more than 65 tons, we managed aperfect, full rudder, 360° turn, with motors going at 2000 rpmand a turning radius of about 80 meters. Noise levels werewell controlled, too, with a maximum of 75 decibels at thehelm station when going full throttle. The yacht we tested hadthe optional electric CMC Marine stabilizing fins and gyro-scopic stabilizers installed.

t’s a trend, much appreciated byyachters and supported by designers.Cruising vessels need to be roomy, at any cost. And on a sailboat, when you’re not sleeping, youspend 90% of your time in the cockpit. The Ocea-nis 55 from Bénéteau is nearly the flagship for therange. The only one bigger is just 58 feet.Launched in 2013, she is the fruit of two designstudios: Berret Racopeau for the hull and Nautafor the interiors. To examine the cockpit, let’s begin

by looking at its dimensions: 270cm long and 306 cm wide, with 216 cm benches. But there’s more, since the seating isL-shaped, there’s another 90 cm before reaching the com-panionway. During the test, there were eight of us on boardand there was still plenty of room. For comfort and conven-

ience, the two sun pads are located on the deckhousebeside the companionway. They are two meters long and,one imagines, very popular when anchored in port or har-bor. It is not only the deckhouse with its two sun pads pro-viding so much space for passengers, the two wheels havebeen positioned totally aft. Seating is not blocked by maneu-vering. The jib winches are near the wheels, situated on afiberglass base, so that they are handy for the helmsmanrather than behind the backs of passengers seated in thecockpit, as is usually the case. The two sun pads on thedeckhouse are not blocked by the top of the halyards sincethey run externally to the cockpit, under the deck, toreemerge forward of the helms where obviously there arestoppers. This means the cockpit is free of obstacles so thatpassengers can sit there while sailing without getting in the

The interior style by Nauta Design is unmistakable. It is very

elegant and plays on the clear and dark contrast. The Oceanis

55 has three double cabins, two bathrooms and a convertible

dinette.

It is also available in a four cabin version.

On the other hand, the rollbar is not very attractive and itsomewhat hinders visibility, particularly when the sprayhoodgoes from the rollbar all the way to forward of the compan-ionway and the two sun pads. When there is a lot of spray, the skipper has to lean very far out to check the sailsbecause central visibility can be bad. The twin wheels com-pensate for this to some extent, as does the lateral position-ing of the helm seats. The stern area was also designed with

way of whoever is manning the wheels or trimming the sails. And the mainsail sheet? It is kept well clear of the cockpitbecause the blocks are attached to a rollbar. So no traveler, obviously, but neither are there blocks “raining down” on thedeckhouse. On the model we tested the mainsail winch waselectric and very easy to regulate with precision. With the rig-ging on the rollbar, the sheet can be on the end of theboom, making it easier to regulate without excessive effort.

the sailors’ needs in mind. The backstay is double and thereis a long seat between one wheel and the other, with a stain-less steel bathing ladder which serves also for hooking thestays. The transom can be electrically lowered to forma beach platform level with the water. Withthe stern open, she looks like a regat-ta racing boat. The beach platformis fully 340 cm wide. There aretwo layout options, with three orfour cabins. The Oceanis 55we tried was the three-cabinversion, with the master cabinforward and two twin cabinsaft. With two heads, but themaster bath was particularlyconvincing. It was “split” in thesense that the toilet, located port-side, is separate, while the entire star-board side is taken up by a large showerstall. Access to the second head is gained from theaft cabin located starboard of the dinette. For the four-cabinversion, Nauta shifted the position of the head a bit portside, stealing a bit of space from the galley, and adding a bunk-

bed cabin starboard. The layout ofthe dinette expresses the greatversatility planned by the Italiandesign studio. When we haulanchor and pull away from thedock of the Real Club Nautico, thewind is at nearly twenty knots. Shehandles well close hauling. We getup 30° and a speed of 7.3 knots.Spreading out to beam reach, weget all the way up to 9.5. At broadreach, she slows a little. No furlinggennaker was planned for this ves-

sel, since it would have to be asymmetrical and the yard’smanagers wouldn’t dream of raising one. On we go, theGPS registering speeds between 8 and 9 knots, and truewind at between 17 and 18. In the occasional wind holes, she tends to ego dead in the water, a good indication thather performance in calm winds is not so exciting. On theother hand, Oceanis 55 is a cruising boat, and so ratherheavy. In good winds, she behaves admirably and herweight contributes to keeping pitching to a bare minimum. The only thing that left us a bit perplexed was the ruddersystem. It is not particularly easy to handle but is insteadrather stiff, even when running downwind. Mooring presentsno difficulty, since she is outfitted with a 360° Docking sys-tem, designed at the yard in collaboration with ZF and oper-ated by joystick and rotating pod drive. In reverse we feltvery little prop walk and the boat steered easily and straight. In the versions outfitted with a bow thruster, the systemworks also with it and makes maneuvering a breeze. This, too, means comfortable cruising.

Francesco Serafini, together with his partner,Austrian WolfgangPernsteiner, has set himself a daunting challenge by investing in the

And it is with enormousenthusiasm that these entrepreneurs havetaken on the decision to relaunch the Domina-tor brand. ed in Vienna, we had the pleasure of meeting with them at theirmodern industrial site in Fano, Italy.FM – What makes an IT manager decide to get into theshipbuilding business?FS – I’ll tell you very simply: I was born in Fano and spent twen-ty-five years working abroad and seeing our country from a for-eign perspective. I wanted to contribute my business skills to mycountry. I’ve always loved boats, so getting involved in the nau-tical industry was a natural choice for getting started in a newprofessional adventure.FM – How much of this adventure is rooted in reason andhow much in passion?FS – To tell the truth, it’s 50-50. Passion, to do business in myhometown. Reason, because Dominator shipyards operate withvalid business models and a modern manufacturing plant whichhas enormous potential. Plus, since I have acquired years ofexperience working internationally, I believe I have a lot to offertowards developing the brand. I came into contact with thecompany for various reasons and was offered an opportunity toinvest economically in the company and to put my internationalexperience to good use.FM – You are a concrete example of the concept that a cri-sis can be an opportunity.FS – I am convinced that there are great financial resources inthe world so which translated into great opportunities for man-ufacturers of luxury goods like yachts. In a stable market it ismore difficult to make a name for yourself, whereas when thesituation is critical, competitive players have the edge. I believethat the nautical industry needs to go first through an emotion-al phase and then one aimed at making the industrializationprocess more modern and flexible, exploiting the capacity tocreate custom-designed products, but finding a less structuredway to do so. Another important aspect that will make a differ-ence is our cash flow management and how we use ourresources.

ARCHEB144 October 2013

Francesco Serafini Interview

FM – When you were starting out, the international nauticalindustry was in deep recession. Didn’t that scare you?FS – No, we were prepared to deal with an ongoing eco-nomic crisis. We set ourselves a 5-year goal and we figuredthat for at least two of them, we would have been dealingwith a difficult market, and that if the difficult years weremore than two, it wouldn’t matter to us because our 5-yearplan would simply become a 7-year plan. Our first order ofbusiness was to redefine our production capacity so thatwe would have a number of motor boats ready for whenthe market recovered. FM – Coming, as you do, from totally different businesssectors, having been merely nautical consumers in the past, what kind of added value do you bring to this activity?FS – Personally, I come from an industry characterized bythree fundamental parameters: first of all, innovation, second-ly customer service and thirdly, concern for people. I believethat these three parameters have an effect on this industryas well, because if you look at it from the outside, you seethat after-sale service has not been standardized. If you leavedistribution up to external dealers, the quality of service thecustomer receives will depend greatly on the individual deal-er. There isn’t enough focus on after-sale service so this is anarea that we need to work on. Especially in a sluggish mar-ket, increasing brand loyalty through dependable customerservice adds inestimable value.FM – But is there room for your project to leap forward, ordo you need to evolve and grow slowly, because boat own-ers are rather conservative in this sense?FS – I believe that what they want is to see a product thatmaintains its value over time and that can grow not only in

IMP. DOMINATOR en 10-10-2013 18:02 Pagina 144

size but in terms of the kind of service they get and the usethey make of the product. The product should be used theway the owner wants to use it, making the most of the timehe can dedicate to his boat. Whether the boat is large orsmall doesn’t matter. What matters is that services are tai-lored to meet the owner’s needs, and this is an innovativeaspect, in my opinion.FM – Having a boat with low fuel-consumption is a notreally a priority for a boat owner who spends only abouta hundred hours a year on his boat, when all is said anddone. A hundred hours of fuel does not actually amountto much money in comparison with the cost of the boatitself.

«Our challengeis to bring theDominator

brand at thehighest levelof excellence».

>FS – This is true, but we have to take the emotional aspect intoconsideration, too. All marketing strategies today point towardreducing fuel consumption and cutting down on waste, so thereare ethical considerations that affect technological advances. Ithink there is still plenty of room for improvement as far as this isconcerned. FM – Do your products belong to the “Made in Italy” iden-tity, or are they part of a more global market?FS – Well, I believe that one of the most valuable things ourcountry contributes to the world is our capacity to create a style,or even the concept of style itself. I am convinced that if thesesame boats were built anywhere else in the world, their valuewould decrease.

Francesco Serafini Interview

FM – So, your objective is to create a product of unbeatableexcellence? FS – Definitely. The real challenge lies in being able to cus-tomize the boat to the owner’s liking while keeping costsunder control. I think this is an opportunity to bring some ofthe typical characteristics of large boats to the smaller boatsand this will keep prices in a range that is still affordable, which I think boat owners up to a certain market sector willappreciate. FM – So the kind of product is defined by the customer.FS – Our advantage lies in having a product that is predeter-mined as far as the basic lines and esthetics are concerned, but

with interiors that can be designed, laid out and constructedaccording to the customer’s specifications. With our boats, it isdifficult to find two alike, even if they are both the same model. When I say dissimilar, I don’t mean only differences in kinds ofwood or other materials, but even the layouts are different. Someprefer an open galley with a wet bar, others want it closed off, some would rather have a study than an extra cabin… Theseare the kind of differences you can find and it is quite easy for usto offer them, because these boats were designed to be cus-tomized.FM – What is the size range of your boats?FS – Between 20 and 40 meters, with a focus mainly on fiber-glass-hulled boats between 20 and 33 meters, although we didproduce a 40-meter aluminum model in 2011. FM – What is your target market?FS – Central Europe and the Mediterranean with clients comingfrom Eastern Europe, especially Russia and Ukraine. The Turkishmarket is growing and demand in the Middle East is once againbeginning to be substantial. In the medium term, I’d say the timeis not ripe for Asia to develop a consistent nautical market. FM – How much has the overall investment been to launchthis project?FS – Several million euros. Both stockholders are committed toa long-term investment and neither needs to see quick returns. All profits generated are re-invested in the company. For yachtowners, this is a reassuring guarantee. FM – After the 640, what are your next projects going to be?FS – We’ve got some young boats coming up. The 780 wasdesigned three years ago, the 720 two years ago, now we’vemade the 640. The 29-meter boat is already in the water andhas a rather young line, in terms of the kind of market we’reaiming at. We have a new take on the 680 and a new projectfor an 880.

ackage. Turnkey. All-Inclusive. Call itwhat you will, this is Selva’s strategy. The basicconcept is to supply problem-free products.Selva has always been an outboard motormanufacturer. Moreover, it has been the onlyoutboard motor manufacturer in Europe forquite a while now. The company’s vast range ofproducts includes two- and four-stroke enginesand the famous Torqeedo electric motors fromGermany. This line of motors is flanked by an

equally wide range of rubber dinghies and fiberglass boats, ina variety of lengths to suit every need. The idea of offering apackage is certainly nothing new, but what sets Selva apart isthe vastness of choices available. In addition to motors, thecompany has contracted with a number of boatyards to be ableto offer their customers many types of boats. For problem-freeseafaring adventures, there are now various payment plansavailable, not to mention a five-year guarantee. A boat is morethan just a hull and a motor. That’s why Selva’s offers alsoinclude a series of indispensible navigational accessories. Thepackage contains everything, including the wheel, the helm andthe instruments. Last but not least: don’t equate great priceswith skimping on quality. Good value for your money is partic-ularly important in times of economic downturn. Selva offers reli-able products and services, while keeping prices under control.Their secret is volume, with the bulk of customers coming fromabroad, since even developing countries appreciate their pack-age deals and the availability of small and medium-sized boats. While the boats are simple, withoutfrills or useless accessories, they are not bare. The advantage to this is, if it isn’t there, it can’tbe broken. But whatever is really necessarywill be on board. The company also offersmore luxurious packages, like the one bornfrom an agreement with the French shipyard,Bénéteau. We tried out two of their Flyer

series, a 6.5 meter and a 5.5 meter, on the waters of LakeComo. Besides the two Bénéteau, equipped with Selva motors,we also tested the new Elegance 6.7 and the “anti-recession”boat, the Tiller. Why is it called “anti-recession”? Because theygive you a 4.5 meter boat equipped with a 9.9 horsepower out-board engine all for ?3700, including VAT. About the same asyou’d pay to buy a scooter.

Bénéteau Flyer 650A versatile boat must have a versatile hull. The 650 has a goodstability and it is easy to handle. It promptly responds to reversals as well as the snap accelera-tions. With these features it can be used for all water sports aswell as fishing and skiing. We have tested it with a 115 hp out-board, but it can also be equipped with a 200 hp. The per-formances are more than enough because it plans at 3,600rpm at ten knots and it reaches a maximum speed of 34.1knots at 5,900 rpm. With a not too powerful engine we havethree advantages . At first you do not weigh down the transomand even the truck , as the 650 is towable. Then , it doesn’tconsume a lot of fuel, at the top speed it burns 37 liters and just16 at the minimum of plan . Finally the package cost is low.

Bénéteau Flyer 550The Flyer 550 has a very flexible lay out. The two pilot and copi-lot seats can revolve and complete the living area that has a lin-ear aft bench and a small table. The whole area of the bow, however, can be used as a sundeck. The helm station isn’t inthe middle, so there is only a wide walkway on the left to go atbow. We have tested it with a 40/60 Hp that shows the wholewide range of Selva packages. The engine is a "no license", so it can be used by anyone. Ambitious and demanding of her-self and others, Ilaria Cianci hasbeen for almost ten years animportant figure for the Marina deiCesari and has always expressed a speci-fic interest for the career of the port director, aposition she reached in May of this year. If theactual training took place "in the field", withinthe same structure, to deepen and improveher professional skills she has spent the last

two years in practical and theoretical training. From October2011 until May 2012, in fact, Ilaria attended the high culturecourse in Marina Management organized by the University ofSan Marino in collaboration with Marine Partners, a companyspecializing in the management of marinas. At the end of thecourse and after a brief experience in England to know therealities of the local tourism, she has contributed for sixmonths to the start up of the Marina Yacht Club Costa Sme-ralda Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, collaboratingto optimize the mooring plan, the information systems andthe management data, in order to lay the foundations formanagement and reception of guests structured accordingto the standards now required for a modern marina.Young, woman, manager in a port of sailors. hat’s the difference betweena “parking lot” for boats anda marina? Geographical contextand integration with local cultural her-itage are undoubtedly determining fac-tors. From this point of view, Marina diScarlino is an ideal location. LeonardoFerragamo, who became the marina’ssole shareholder this year, has a veryclear vision of the potential of the struc-ture to join with the surrounding terri-

tory, the Maremma, to become a major attraction not only forboat lovers, but for both international and proximity tourism.More than fifty local tourist service providing companies, restau-

Wrants and wineries have agreed to work together to highlight thealready excellent productive and commercial properties of thearea. Today Marina di Scarlino is a hub for the entire area, alsothanks to the efforts of The Lifestyle Company.Opening these kinds of businesses that offer an alternativeto old retail models, increasing the influx of visitors, cre-ating greater service opportunities to benefit everyone andattracting foreign capital and know-how, are the keys todomestic and international growth. The involvement of pre-mier-level partners has contributed to drawing unique for-mats to the Marina, such as the new beach club andswimming pool, built this year, and to developing collab-orative offers, for example with Mortelle Winery owned bythe Antinori family.

The Marina is immersed in a one-of-a-kind environment, far from crowds but close to immaculate beaches and typical

Mediterranean pine woods. Marina di Scarlino is situated in the province of Grosseto in Tuscany, along one of the most beautiful

Event in SicilyThe Region of Sicily, as part of a series ofregional development programs, has creat-ed this event to promote the international-ization of and networking between Sicilianboat yards and marinas. We were part of a delegation of journalists and buyers fromall over the world that took a journey into this many-faceted reality. Here, in this amazing land, rich in featuresof physical beauty that merge with a thousand-year-oldculture, we experienced sensations that Sicily alone canprovide. This initiative is a way to let the world know aboutthe superlative boat yards and marinas Sicily has to offer. Our journey begins in Palermo at Marina di Porto Arenel-la, situated near the city center, not far from Villa Igea, andoverlooked by the Castle of Utveggio. This marina has 118berths and can host boats up to 40 meters long. We thenmoved on to Funari in the province of Messina, where westopped off at Marina di Portorosa in the Gulf of Patti, aperfect point of departure for sailing to the Aeolian Islands. The marina has room for 700 vessels, ranging in size from6 to 35 meters. Next stop: Porto Rossi, the port in the heart of the city ofCatania, at the foot of Mount Aetna. The marina here datesback to 1961 when Pietro Rossi, a yachting enthusiast witha passion for the nautical world, managed to transform aformer dump into an oasis for pleasure boaters. The mari-

na hosts 250 boats at the docks and 200 on land. From Catania, we headed towards Ragusa, visiting thesplendid Marina there. This port is characterized mainly byits totally sheltered harbor, completely protected fromwaves, making mooring here truly a pleasure any time ofyear. This marina is a favorite destination for Malteseyachters who also appreciate the on-site boat yard, withover 1800 sq m of indoor facilities and an external area of10,500 sq m. The yard efficiently carries out maintenanceand refitting operations and can provide storage for anykind of vessel. Last winter the boats in dry storage hereincluded eight 15-meter catamarans. Its location, so close to the Comiso airport, makes it attrac-tive both for national and international visitors. Our tour ended in Licata, near Marina Cala del Sole, amodern, new marina ideally situated for travelling to theislands of Malta, Gozo, Pantelleria, Lampedusa, Linosa oreven towards Spain and North Africa. With 1500 berths, the marina can host boats up to 70 meters in length. Themarina was having a little festival while we were there, offering local food and wine, live music and the opportuni-ty to take boats out to sea for trials. The closing press conference was also held here, stress-ing the need and importance for operators from the nauti-cal sector to work together with government authorities toincrease and improve the services available to pleasureboaters. A project is underway to create more berths withthe construction of new docks in this area. Everythingpoints to a new wave of positivity and optimism in thebelief that the sector is taking off again and that those whokept the faith and kept investing in it are going to see theirefforts rewarded. As Goethe put it, “Sicily is the key to everything.”
