The racing was thunderous and non-stop last Saturday in Midway, when dozens of sledders and spectators came together for the 7th annual Snowmobile Drag Races, presented by the Kettle Valley Racing Association.

The sun shone brightly last Saturday as the 7th annual Snowmobile Drag Races took to the Midway Airstrip, bring-ing dozens of racers out to compete for cash and trophies.

Unlike last year’s event, which was dampened by wet weather, this year’s races took place in crisp, cool air and perfect snow.

Organizer Darrin Metcalf was pleased by the turnout of

both sledders and spectators, who kept themselves warm with hot drinks and a blazing fire.

“Our gate traffic tripled over last year with more than $1,700

collected,” Metcalf said. “We had racers from as far away as Prince George, some from Ka-mloops and Princeton as well. Needless to say, we were very pleased with the event.”

Metcalf also mentioned a possible collaboration with Princeton and its snowmobil-ing community next winter, in the form of a racing points system to make the competi-tion more than a one-day af-fair.

Check the next issue of the Times for the race results.

With recent catastrophic fire events comes the sober realization that most of us need to become more diligent about protecting our homes and properties from wildfires. The program known as FireSmart provides expert advice on how to make our houses and land secure in the event of fire by taking some fairly simple steps.

This was the message delivered by Bridesville-based Quintech Fire Services principal Dar-ren Hutchinson to a group of West Boundary residents on tJan. 26 at a meeting to kick off the planned FireSmart initiative in the region.

Joined by Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) Area E/West Boundary Di-rector Vicki Gee, Hutchinson briefly explained the foundation of the federal initiative and de-scribed the ease with which the neighbouring Anarchist Mountain community attained its FireSmart Canada Community status, the result of residents joining forces for a weekend and clearing brush, trimming trees and taking other simple steps to prevent a wildfire from reaching their homes.

Hutchinson arrived at the meeting armed with binders to distribute to any members of 18 separate “communities” (eg Hulme Creek Road, Westrbridge to Beaverdell, Rock Creek Brides-ville Road) who attended the meeting.

Each binder contained a detailed check list that is used to assess a property’s ability to survive a wild fire. The list includes roofing type (shakes are the least desirable), proximity of trees to a dwelling (minimum 10 metres is recommended) and other “common sense” factors which many residents likely overlooked prior to the Rock Creek fire.

Residents are being encouraged to form work groups within their designated areas and assist

one another in the FireSmart initiative, which will officially get underway at the first train-ing session on Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. at the Rock Creek Fairgound pavilion. All area residents are welcome to attend.

Hall will be focus of meetingMidway council began its

regular meeting on Monday with Councillor Dick Dunsdon introducing two late items to the agenda, including council-lor remuneration and renova-tion of the community hall.

Hall upgrades needed

Dunsdon said the present hall, considering its age, may present issues regarding renova-tions. He was more in support of finding an alternative loca-tion for the community hall. Mayor Kappes stated that he feels the situation has to move forward one way or another.

Councillor Metcalf was in favour of a public meeting re-garding the building as was Councillor Rotvold, though she was not in favour of a new building. The building could be viewed as heritage, though Rotvold suggested there may be grants available to upgrade the building because of that very designation.

Council decided to hold a public meeting as a first step in the process.

Councillors get raise

Dundson made a motion to approve an annual remunera-tion increase of approximately eight per cent for council mem-bers, which would increase a councillors stipend to $6,000, while the mayor would receive $7,600 annually. The motion was passed, though it was noted

that the remuneration bylaw will have to be rewritten.

Concrete plant trial permit requested

Osoyoos Readi-Mix has asked council to consider issu-ing the company a temporary industrial permit to begin a trial operation of a concrete patching facility. The company has been investigating potential locations for a plant and has identified Midway as being well-located for such an operation.

Council took the request un-der advisement and will discuss the matter at a later date.

Midway rejection of hotel tax disappoints

Council discussed its re-jection of the Municipal and Regional District Tax on ac-commodation in response to correspondence from Midway Hospitality Ltd (Mile Zero Mo-tel), which cited its disappoint-ment with Midway’s decision. A motion to receive and file the letter was passed.

The city of Greenwood has also rejected the tax at this time.

Chief Administrator attends special meeting

CAO Penny Feist reported

on her attendance at the Zone 4 fire chiefs/CAO education and meeting in Creston, telling council it was a very informa-tive session which drew many experts together to discuss, among other things, proce-dures that should be followed during fire events such as those seen last summer throughout the Boundary and Washington State.

Presenters included Deputy Regional Fire Chief Dan Der-by, Dennis Rexin (Senior For-est Protection Officer for the BC Wildfire Service) and Fire Chiefs Dale Harriot (Grand Forks) and Walt Osellame (Midway). There was also a workshop on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which focused on enhanced critical incident stress management, common psychological and be-havioral crisis reactions and the recognition of PTS and PTSD symptoms.

Village looks to rebrand profile

The Village of Midway is in the planning stage of rebrand-ing its profile, which would in-clude a new logo, tag line, wel-come sign and website. Munday Media and Design of Osoyoos has been asked to provide a quote.

The next council meeting will be on Monday Feb. 15 at 7pm, 6:30 pm if there is a del-egation.

Students from Midway, Greenwood and Rock Creek elementary schools convened in Greenwood last week for Literacy Day. Students were encouraged to dress like a character from one of their favourite books. Here, teacher Jen-nifer Eaton plays the Cat in the Hat to her sidekicks Thing 1 (Riley Moline) and Thing 2 (Savanna Elliot).

Letters Policy

This Sunday afternoon will likely find me settling into my sofa armed with a can of lite beer and a plate of nachos, drawn to the television by the quintessentially American spectacle known as the Super Bowl (or, as my wife refers to it, “Stuper Bowl”).

I can’t but help at least partially agree with her, as, truth be told, at the game’s conclusion I usually feel like I’ve just engaged in a colossal waste of time and find my brain slightly numbed by it all. Yet, there’s something about the event that keeps pulling me back year after year, regardless of which teams are competing for the title of “World Champion,” which is another characteristic of American sporting bodies that makes me chuckle.

Um, excuse me, National Football League; how can it be a “world championship” game when both competitors are U.S. based? Heck, all 24 NFL teams are from the lower 49; not one from Canada, none from Europe or Aus-tralia, but all from America. Don’t get me wrong, I real-ize that American-style football played outside of North America simply cannot be considered in the same class as the NFL, or even the CFL, yet still it irks me a little when American sporting champions are viewed automatically as world champs!

The National Basketball Association does it, as does Major League Baseball with its “World Series.” This despite the fact that both of those sports, in particular, are played at extremely high levels in many other parts of the world, making the Americans’ assumption that victory would al-ways be theirs, regardless of who their competition was,

particularly annoying. Next, Major League Soccer (MSL) will be awarding the World Cup to that North American league’s champion.

Still, the Americans know how to throw a party, at least on television; the 2016 Super Bowl organizing committee had a budget of $40 million, which can buy a lot of talent and tons of confetti. I’m positively dizzy with excitement in anticipation of watching Coldplay and Beyonce duke

it out for supremacy in what is always dubbed “the best ever Super Bowl half time show.”

And then there are the commercials, often the very best of the advertising genre, many of them kept top secret prior to the big game. So secret, in fact, that Canadians are unable to view them until after the Super Bowl is over, as they are replaced via “simsub,” or the simul-taneous substitution of Canadian ads, despite the game possibly being viewed on an Ameri-can television station.

Apparently, if the CRTC has its way, that will change for next year’s Super Bowl but for now we will likely have to endure endless Tim Hortons and Canadian Tire commer-cials (sorry, but they simply don’t match up) while those south of the border will get to enjoy the best that advertis-ing currently has to offer.

As for the game itself (oh yeah, the football), it may well be a lopsided affair in favour of the Carolina Panthers, but I’m hoping Big Daddy Peyton Manning can somehow rise to the occasion and call his patented “Omaha” snap count into NFL history.

My prediction? Carolina 28, Denver 31.

Americans know how to throw a party

Canada’s animal welfare laws have remained largely unchanged since 1892. While recent amendments to the laws have increased penalties for those found guilty of animal abuse, the application and scope of the cur-rent laws remain ineffective. Unfortunately this makes it difficult to prosecute even the worst animal abusers which can lead to but one conclusion; our laws need to be improved to serve as a real tool to protect animals from neglect and abuse.

Internationally, Canada’s animal cruelty legislation is viewed as outdated and lagging far behind most de-veloped countries. In Canada, animals are not protect-ed equally, due to a criminal code that fails to provide a clear definition of “animal,” but rather, refers to specific animals and protects them differently.

The current law contains a separate section and sep-arate offences for cattle, and refers to dogs, birds and “other animals.” Canada offers virtually no protection for wild and stray animals, as unowned animals have less protection than owned animals. In fact, under the Criminal Code, animal cruelty crimes are considered property offences instead of violence against a living, sensitive creature.

Another issue with the animal cruelty section of the Criminal Code of Canada is the use of the term “willful neglect” which requires proof that an accused intended to harm or kill his or her animal(s). Courts must prove that neglect was a willful or motivated ac-tion. Even in extreme cases where, perhaps, dozens of animals have been left out in the cold to die or starved to death, judges will typically conclude that the ac-cused didn’t actually intend for the animal(s) to suffer or die and will find them not guilty.

Although penalties dealing with animal cruelty were recently updated, these penalties are still insuf-ficient, with many loopholes, and do not act as a deter-rent to violent offences and abusive owners.

All in all, we need to collectively lobby for stricter laws to help protect animals from abuse and, simultaneously, support animal sanctuaries like Rock Creek’s Karl Ranch. After all, isn’t it about time we eliminated animal abuse once and for all?

Stop the abuse

Re: Tripp article “boomers mourn their hereos”I would normally ignore an article such as “Boomers mourn

their heroes” but it is so full of sweeping, poorly thought-out generalizations I felt that on behalf of those of us “staring down a tunnel of uncertainty when it comes to their health,” I should respond to some of your comments.

I don’t use social media, but it probably isn’t the most au-thoritative source of information. I do read, however, and have studied history in detail, especially 20th century history (BA, BED) and still continue to do so. Some prefer social media.

If being the offspring of men and women who built the weapons of war, fed and equipped the troops, fought the Na-

zis, Fascists, and Japanese, after surviving the Great Depression makes us the most privileged of generations, I would agree, we owe that generation a huge debt of gratitude as does every gen-eration since. However, many never returned from the Second World War, and many of those that did were damaged beyond repair, PTSD, and every kind of disability one can imagine.

While overseas: especially the bomber command of eat, drink, and be merry was a reality for the front line people. That was perhaps passed on to the “boomers” subliminally. Or per-haps the uncertainty created by the Cold War era, Vietnam war, and nuclear arms race had a similar effect on the collective con-sciousness.

Some of us rejected the post war materialism and began looking at alternatives to big energy. Some made significant in-novations that are once again being reinvented and mass pro-duced for the good of the environment. We became one of the

most creative, liberal thinking, “brash, adventur-ous, confident demographic” generations ever.

The music scene exploded with new styles, and reworked old styles. I don’t mourn the loss of music icons, but sad to see them go—but we all must go sometime, any fool knows that.

And on that “note,” the cancer issue is not related to “the era in which they were born,” my wife and I lost all four parents to cancer, my mother was 51. This year we lost two 58-year-old friends to cancer.

Statistically the older the person, the more likely cancer can strike: obviously our generation will be more likely to get cancer. With the results of horrific agricultural practices, and big pharma, don’t hold your breath for longevity. Many of these stars you refer to, however, lived hard and fast and the lifestyle took the life.

As we see our peers dying at an increas-ing rate, “denial regarding their own aging and death” is a ridiculous, thoughtless comment, and at this point in my “boomerhood,” my four chil-dren are all educated and independent, and will not be burdened by their parents.

How Mr. Tripp has attempted to connect this notion to the deaths of Bowie, Frey and Kilmister as “even more poignant” is really beyond under-standing

His piece is an opinion piece, so requires noth-ing but his own thoughts; well, perhaps he should think again, because this item was garbage.

When Karl Ranch animal sanctuary owners Martha Rogers and Brad Schnei-der made the move to the Boundary last year, their planned destination was West-bridge, where they had put a down-pay-ment on a property that suited them and their plans for an animal rescue shelter in the region. All that changed when the Rock Creek/Westbridge fire tore through the Highway 33 corridor, destroying much of the couple’s vision.

Fortunately, a realtor found them an-other property on Bubar Road in Rock Creek, a riverside acreage surrounded by nature and the Trans-Canada Trail, and it is there that Karl Ranch came into being.

Moving from Calgary to B.C. was an easy choice for Rogers and Schneider; both love the mountains and, with most land in Alberta being flat farmland as well as cost-prohibitive if near a town of any sort, the Boundary appeared ideal for both personal and business-related reasons. Add to that the couple’s impression of the

community’s coming together dur-ing the fire, and their decision to make the area their home became an easy one.

“After seeing the way the com-munity here banded together dur-ing the fire, we knew this was the type of community we wanted to be a part of and we have certainly not seen anything to make us feel otherwise,” Rogers said. “Everyone we’ve met and had dealings with are beyond helpful and welcoming.”

Schneider has been a certified dog trainer since 2004, conducting obedience, puppy and movie tricks classes, while Rogers is currently half way through a two-year clinical pet nutritionist degree program. Rogers also gained her pre-vet degree though the University of Calgary. The couple shares ideals in terms of the rescue aspect and dogs in general.

“We both believe that the dogs we have do well with us because we firmly believe in setting them up for success and not failure and both of us are very well versed in reading a dogs body language,” Rogers said. “Our ultimate goal is ensuring they are happy and well adjusted.

“We’ve had dogs that were abused to the point they had completely shut down, and we’ve been able to bring their self con-fidence back and get them adopted out to the right home. We’ve put years into work-ing with dogs and then once we see them confidently leave with their new families, it proves that it takes patience and know-ing what the dog needs to move past any traumatic experience they may have expe-

rienced.” In Calgary, Rogers fostered for various

rescue organizations for six years, foster-ing over 450 dogs during that time span, often ending up with the problem dogs and medical cases because of her experi-ence. Both Rogers and Schneider gained valuable knowledge through working with numerous rescue groups in Calgary and decided to approach the Just Love Animals (JLA) Society to suggest a partnership.

JLA runs the Petapalooza events in Vic-toria, Vancouver and Calgary and is look-ing to expand to other cities in the next few years. Rogers and Schneider have the property, space and vast canine experience with which to support JLA’s animal welfare mandate.

“Our ultimate goal is to offer boarding, daycare and training, in addition to nutri-tion consulting to help fund the rescue,” Rogers said. “We know that working with animals may not make us millionaires but helping to save every animal we are capa-ble of is what matters most. We are lucky

Busy holiday season for WI group

This Christmas the Rock Creek Women’s Institute (RCWI) made 17 hampers full of baking, candy and or-anges for single seniors in Rock Creek. We also made up plates of baking for each of the 22 residents of Parkview

Manor in Midway. In the RCWI minutes from 1934, it

was noted that baking, candy and or-anges were given to some families in the Rock Creek area at Christmas.

At the Nov. 18, 2015 meeting of the Rock Creek WI, we packed six shoe-boxes for Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child, and donated money

to Vancouver Children’s Hospi-tal, Boundary Hospital/Hardy

View, South Okanagan Hospital/ McK-inney Place, and Women’s Coalition in Grand Forks.

On Dec. 9, the proceeds of our quilt raffle were given to West Boundary Ele-mentary School parent advisory council, for the food program. The cheque was for $700. Boundary Hospice received an afghan valued at $40, the remainder of the raffle proceeds. Thank you to every-one who bought tickets.

Has anybody no-ticed the Welcome to Rock Creek signs? Rock Creek WI is 100 years old this year. On Jan. 29, 1916 the 25 charter members of the Rock Creek Women’s Institute subscribed to become members of the Asso-ciation under the Ag-riculture Associations Act. The application was forwarded to Vic-toria, and the Certifi-cate of Incorporation is dated Feb.15, 1916. The annual member-ship fee was 50¢.

KarlRanchenough to have won-derful partners in the JLA Society that will be doing most of our major fundraising for our rescue and sanctu-ary animals (our per-manent, un-adoptable animals that will live out their lives with us).”

Karl Ranch is cur-rently in the process of having donation boxes put into stores, with over 30 business-es already agreeing to showcase them. At the Petapalooza events, the couple will be looking for donations of cash and sup-plies needed to support the sanctuary, such as food, dog beds, leashes, collars and toys.

Rogers and Schneider are also hoping to attract donations of building supplies for the construction of a rescue building, which will house incoming dogs during a quarantine assessment period as they are readied for potential adoption. They are also in need of fencing and fencing materials to enable the ranch to expand their rescue efforts to include animals such as horses and other livestock.

“Currently the JLA Society assists the ranch with some spay and neuter costs,” Rogers said, “and we plan on expanding

that as well. They also help with food do-nations for those in need and there are many other programs we are hoping to start up in the future. Karl Ranch was the original name for our facility and since we’ve teamed up with JLA we’ve expanded to JLA Society SVU (special victims unit) at Karl Ranch Rescue and Sanctuary.”

“While our facility grows, however, we will continue to ensure the care of each animal is top notch and that our goal remains the same as it has with all of the animals who have come into our care.”

In addition to offering adoptions out of Karl Ranch, Rogers and Schnei-der will begin holding “adoptathons” at Sunshine Pets in Kelowna as soon as

they have dogs ready to place. The store has already helped the couple’s fundrais-ing efforts by staging a very successful “Pet Pics with Santa” campaign last De-cember. Adopting will cost around $300, which includes vaccinations, spay/neu-ter and physical and behavioral assess-ments.

“Once I started fostering,” said Rog-ers, “I noticed there was such a high demand for foster homes, especially ones that could handle dogs with cer-tain issues, including medical and be-havioural problems. Since then it has become my full-time job, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Karl Ranch can be reached through Facebook and the JLA website is www.jlasociety.com.
