“There are a few things that make this run unique,” explained JLB Memorial Kettle River Run organizer Stephanie Boltz. “The river trail makes it unique and the mountain trail makes it very unique. That the run is held on a Saturday rather than a Sunday is also distinctive.”

What happens to the funds raised by the event is what really makes it ex-traordinary, though.

The Midway Public Library gets the money from run registrations; the pledges and dona-tions raised by the runners are given to the BC Cancer Foundation of the Southern Inte-rior to help cancer patients from the Bound-ary meet the costs of their care.

This was the 5th annual run and was dedi-cated to Fran Elliott, a long-time resident and active volunteer in Midway.

The Midway Public Library and the Boltz family started the run to help individuals and families that have been victims of can-cer. When Stephanie’s husband and long-time Boundary resident John lost his fight with cancer, the Boltz family came to understand the needs associated with cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“I think Dad would be happy with what we’ve done here in the last five years,” said

John and Stephanie’s daughter Chris, whose husband Sam and their family all flew back from Cairo for the run.

“The money we have raised. When it comes down to it there’s a lot of people out there who can’t afford their own care when it comes to cancer—there’s medication, nutrition, food, transportation, chemo, etc. My dad was self-employed and didn’t have benefits from work—he didn’t have all of that so they used up all their savings to help him through his treatment.

“This is what we try to do. We try to raise money and the money we have raised over the years actually has a face and a name—it’s helped out someone who couldn’t afford medication.

“There is research yes,” Chris said, “but there are people in actual need right now. The Canadian healthcare helps out, but there is just the little things that people can’t afford

Quote of the Week:Facts are the enemy of truth.– Miguel de Cervantes (1547 - 1616), Man of La ManchaJoke of the Week:

A lawyer and a regular average Joe are on a plane together. The pilot comes on the speaker and announces that the flight will take up to 16 hours. The lawyer turns to Joe and says, “Okay, I have a game we can play while we pass the time. You ask me any question, and if I can’t answer it, I’ll give you $50. Then, I get to ask you a question, any question, and if you can’t answer it, you give me $5.” The average Joe says, “Okay, what has four legs going up a hill, and three legs at the bottom?” The lawyer thinks for a mo-ment, then hands Joe $50 and says, “Wow, that was tough. I don’t know, what does have four legs going up a hill and three legs at the bottom?” Joe then hands the lawyer $5 and says to him, “There’s your $5.”

Revitalization bylawmay be renovated

Greenwood council was set to give final reading to their Re-vitalization Bylaw at their July 14, 2014 meeting but decided to send it back to staff for more information. In January council had directed staff to prepare the bylaw based on the model used by Vernon. To be eligible for the tax exemption the property owner would need to invest a minimum of $200,000 in the case of new building construction, $50,000 for additions to an existing building, or $25,000 if renovating (either interior or exterior) existing buildings.

The increase in property tax resulting from the improvements would be 100 per cent forgiven for the first five years following the improvements, the exemption falling to 80 per cent for year six , 60 per cent in year seven, then 40, 20 and finally in year ten only 10 per cent of the tax increase would be waived.

Revitalization tax bylaws typically cover com-mercial properties and are meant to encourage investment in the community. For this reason Mayor Nipper Kettle, who owns a commercial building, excused himself from council chambers during earlier discussions when the bylaw was given three readings. It was during those meet-ings that council decided the bylaw would apply specifically to any business with frontage along Hwy 3 within the city.

However Kettle stayed in the room during subsequent discussion of the bylaw during ques-tion period at both the June 23 and July 14 meet-ings.

During question period at the beginning of the meeting on Monday, July 14, 2014 resident Byron Goch suggested that council consider two amendments to the bylaw. The first would see it applied to any commercial property anywhere in the city and the second would see the city take out loans to invest in revitalization projects.

Goch called the bylaw as drafted a ‘very good starting place’, but he would like to see, “buy-in by local government that would develop a partner-ship for development, along with that some type of plan that would go along with the bylaw that would further enhance investment from outside of Greenwood.”

He suggested the loan from the city would be paid back with interest and the municipality would regain some of the tax revenue foregone with the revitalization bylaw.

“I don’t know if there is a question there, other than to table the bylaw,” said Kettle. “Communi-ties handing out financial advantages - I think the city is limited as to what we can do in that respect.” He added that to date no one has come to the city with a public-private-partnership pro-posal.

Kettle was also concerned about the amount of staff time it would take to administer the pro-gram.

When the issue came up at the end of the meeting the mayor again stayed in the room stat-ing, “I am only here because as the mayor I will end up signing the bylaw at the end of the day.”

He did express concern that the bylaw as drafted would only apply to commercial proper-ties fronting on Hwy 3. “I had a little bit of con-cern about that one issue.”

Some confusion then ensued, as some coun-cil members realized for the first time that new construction would be eligible to apply for the exemption too. Their concern was that someone would develop an empty lot and no new revenue

would flow to the municipality for five years.

Councillor Colleen Lang sug-gested the bylaw should be re-ferred to the next meeting. Ash-ton agreed, saying that economic

development initiatives allowed under the com-munity charter need more research.

Council passed a motion referring it to the next meeting.

***The city will renew their service agreement

with the Board of Trade (BOT). The agreement sees the BOT receive $3,000 in exchange for pro-viding certain services to the community. The re-quest for funding from the BOT included the fol-lowing list of activities on their planning board: participation with the Greenwood Economic Development Committee, annual Mother’s Day garage sale, Canada Day celebrations, Found-er’s Day, a Halloween dance fundraiser, annual Christmas light up, Christmas basket program for business and to provide assistance for Win-terfest celebrations.

Councillor Darla Ashton said she had heard comments from some Greenwood businesses questioning what the BOT does for businesses in town. She noted their mission statement is to promote and improve trade and commerce and the economic and civic social welfare of the dis-trict, but she said other than participation in the GEDC she hadn’t seen them moving in that di-rection.

Lang stated that at one time the BOT did more advertising than they currently do.

Council voted to sign the service agreement and to support the request for funding, but to set a meeting date in the fall with the BOT executive to discuss the BOT mandate.

***Ashton took exception when Kettle reported

he had been in discussion with organizers of the Grand Forks Food Bank to see if they would open their doors on Fridays – the day the bus runs from Green-wood. “Our food bank is accessible anytime during the week,” said

Ashton and the city should be looking after the needs of the residents themselves.

***Under the budget and accounts section of the

agenda a payment of $11,203.73 to Young An-derson Barristers was approved. “Legal costs” were given as the reason for the cheque.

Back in May when the budget for the year was being developed budget line items across the board were held steady or cut as much as pos-sible, with one notable exception.

The amount set aside for legal fees increased from $3,653 to $20,000. When asked at the time why that item was going up so dramatically, Kettle replied, “That is something we can’t tell you about. It is a project that the city is work-ing on.”

***The back of the new signs at the north and

south city entrances will read, “Thanks for visit-ing historic Greenwood.” Council voted a letter of thanks to Community Futures Boundary for providing $1,000 for the project.

***During the last question and answer session

for the meeting resident Byron Goch spoke in favour of approaching ICBC for cost sharing for permanent speed signs. Staff was directed to in-vestigate the opportunity.

Letters Policy

I am not much for leaving on holidays. Going on holi-day is fine, being on holiday is superb—but leaving for a holiday is not my thing.

I am somewhat disorganized and generally behind on this project or pushing the date back on something else. So my anxiety around leaving for a holiday stems from the fact that I simply dread having to drop everything in place and leave.

I was scheduled to fly out of Spokane at 5 a.m. on Sunday morning. I had planned to get a good night’s sleep in a Spokane motel but as it turned out I was late getting out of the house and it was becoming clear that I’d be getting to Spokane after midnight. I figured a few hours sleep in a motel would be better than none. But, silly me, I had neglected to make a motel reser-vation so I ended driving from motel to motel only to be told something about a big conven-tion being in town and unless I could prove I was an Amway distributor they wouldn’t let me sleep there.

So that brief bit of sleep that was supposed to be better than no sleep turned out to be a couple of hours in the car in the airport parking lot.

I bounced out of the car shortly before 4 a.m. so I could check in an hour early. My itinerary would get me into Portland for a short layover before heading further south to Medford. Portland was where I was planning on having breakfast. So all I picked up at the Spokane airport was a cup of Starbucks hi-test.

Things were looking good for the next hour or so. I was on time and on budget! So was my plane and I soon found myself halfway to Portland talking to Lisa, a school

counsellor from Spokane who was off to visit a friend near Portland for a few days.

The stewardess came up to us and after determining that I was indeed Pat Kelly, she told me I’d left my wallet at the Spokane airport.

This was a problem—no wallet meant no money. All I had was about $3.80 in Canadian coin.

I phoned the airport police when we landed and found out that they could Fedex the wallet to me if I set up a Fedex account. I wasn’t sure how to do that without money though.

The second option they offered was to for-ward the wallet to me COD. That wouldn’t work either—I had a rental car waiting in Medford and they weren’t going to give that to me without a driver’s license and a credit card.

The only option was for me to bite the bul-let and fly back to Spokane, retrieve my wal-let and then buy the tickets I’d need to com-plete the trip.

When I explained my problem to Alaska Airlines su-pervisor Wendy Hudson in Portland, she set about rerout-ing my day for me. She promised to have me in Medford that night at the latest. She spent at least half an hour and finally handed me my boarding passes telling me the trip was on the airline this time. Not only that, but I noticed the boarding passes were all stamped with my air miles plan number too. Bonus—I was a Frequent Flyer for one day there anyhow.

As an added bonus I got back home to Midway with enough boarding passes that I was able to wallpaper one wall of the bathroom to remind me of my adventure.

It’s not a holiday—it’s an adventure

Recent community celebrations across the Bound-ary from Rock Creek to Greenwood have proven ex-tremely successful this year.

It took two communities to do it, but Canada Day celebrations lasted from morning to dusk. A morn-ing parade in Rock Creek and fireworks that night in Greenwood.

Two weeks later Greenwood excelled again with one of the largest Founder’s Day celebrations in recent years.

Last weekend it was Midway’s turn to shine—with the 15th annual Kettle River Day, the 5th annual JLB Memorial Kettle River Run and a high school reunion in James G, McMynn Municipal Park that brought to-gether alumni from the 45 years that BCSS has been around.

While specific groups spearheaded each of these events, it took the work of many, many volunteers and organizations to make things happen.

Founder’s Day this year came together through weekly meetings that had representatives from nearly every group in town; and many of those groups were able to gain some leverage for their own agendas by participating.

Both the Greenwood Fire Department and the Greenwood Legacy Group were offering people the opportunity to enjoy a good meal – perfect pancakes from the firemen and the world famous fish and chips put out by the Legacy Group.

The Canada Day Parade and Celebration in Rock Creek was another fine example of many groups work-ing together to make the day exceptional.

Last weekend in Midway the Kettle River Museum hosted their annual Kettle River Family Fun Day with willing volunteers staffing the concession at the gazebo in Frank Carpenter Park throughout the day.

The JLB Run wouldn’t be possible if not for the work of many groups and individuals.

All of these events show what we in the Boundary are truly capable of when we work together. Way to go folks!

Many hands...

Watching gas prices rise as the weather grows warmer is a regular experience for Canadians. The difference this year is that gas prices, which were, in mid-April, al-ready at a three-year high in some provinces (at around $1.50 per litre in Montreal and Vancouver) seem likely to break new records this summer. Tax relief for driving includes moving, traveling for medical services, work-re-lated travel, and taking transit.

MOVING FOR EMPLOYMENT? Where it’s necessary to move to take up employment or self-employment, and the move takes the taxpayer at least 40 kilometres closer to the new place of work, the costs of that move can be deducted from income earned at the new job. When it comes to travelling costs, the taxpayer has the option of either itemizing the various costs incurred (including operating expens-es such as fuel, oil, tires, licence fees, insurance, main-tenance, and repairs and ownership expenses such as depreciation, provincial tax, and finance charges) for the year and then claiming a pro-rated amount which reflects the percentage of kilometres driven which relate to the move. Such an approach requires a fair amount of record keeping and many taxpayers choose instead to claim the standardized per-kilometer rate provided by the federal government. For 2013 (the 2014 rates

will be posted on the CRA website early in 2015), that standardized rate ranged from 45.5 cents per kilome-ter in Saskatchewan to 63.5 cents per kilometer in the Yukon Territory. Where the standardized rate is claimed, no receipts are required, but the taxpayer is required to keep a record of the number of kilometers traveled in relation to the move. TRAVELING FOR MEDICAL SERVICES? The same approach (itemized approach or standard-ized rate claim) applies where a taxpayer is claiming travelling expenses related to medical care. The basic rule for claiming travel expenses in such circumstances requires the taxpayer to travel at least 40 kilometres (one way) from his or her home to obtain medical services which were not available any closer to home. Where that requirement is met, the taxpayer may claim the public transportation expenses paid (for example, taxis, bus, or train) as medical expenses. Where public transportation is not readily available, the taxpayer may be able to claim a pro-rated share of vehicle expenses (both operating expenses and ownership expenses, with receipts, as outlined above) or opt for claiming the standardized per-kilometre rate. As is the case with all medical expense claims, a claim is available only where the total amount claimable exceeds the lesser of 3% of

net income or (for 2014) $2,171.

It is to your advantage to seek out and claim every possible deduction and credit available under our tax rules to help minimize costs. For more information and tips for saving money with work-related travel and transit, please see the rest of this article on our blog at www.rhncga.com.

Tax relief for the cost of driving

Reports now providedAdministrator Penny Feist

presented council with annual reports for the village for 2012 and 2013. This is the first year that the village had put out the documents.

“I see this as a tool more geared for larger communi-ties where the public doesn’t have access to the municipal-ity and may not understand all of the projects that are going on,” Mayor Randy Kappes ex-plained.

“But it is a requirement and it is supposed to be done. This is the result.”

Each report is 37 pages long and includes a statement of objectives, progress report and a copy of the audited financial statement.

*** A request from the Country

Western Bluegrass Association that their event be covered un-der the village’s insurance hit a snag. Feist reported that she has been informed that only the portion of the event be-ing held in the arena can be covered by the municipality’s policy.

She explained that the group qualifies for a $75 add-on to the village policy that will cover only the arena por-tion of their event. A separate policy would be needed for camping in James G. McMynn Park.

Feist reported that the re-cent BCSS reunion paid $300 for their coverage, which in-cluded the arena.

Options under discussion were to reduce the $1,000 fa-cility rental charged the group or for the village to take con-trol of it with paid staff run-

ning the festival—Feist recom-mended against this option as it would increase the village’s exposure should any liability issues arise.

Mayor Randy Kappes said, “I am starting to feel like an insurance salesman.”

After a discussion that last-ed nearly half an hour council agreed the liability insurance is a required cost for the event organizers. The facility rate will remain at $1,000, the vil-lage will cover the $75 cost for the arena insurance and the bluegrass organizers will have to purchase insurance for the park venue.

***Jim Reeves wrote to coun-

cil requesting an exemption from fire protection service charges for St. Mary’s Angli-can Church in Kettle Valley —council was unanimous that he should be asking Bill Baird or the Kettle River Lions. Feist said the coverage would cost $450 per year.

***Council drafted a list of

meetings they would like to have with provincial officials while at the UBCM conven-tion at Whistler in September.

They include a meeting with the Ministry of Agricul-ture to discuss changes to the Agricultural Land Commis-sion, as well as other officials to discuss the community forest, loss of Small Business Timber Sale fibre from the lo-cal area, RCMP and BC Am-

bulance Service.***

Sherwin Engineering of Osoyoos, hired to oversee the installation of pedestal foun-dations for timber entry cano-pies to the arena, reported to the village that there are water drainage issues along the west and north sides of the arena that will eventually erode the foundation. Council directed staff to continue to investigate options for installing a proper drainage system for the build-ing.

***The Ministry of Forests has

donated a 1987 Ford water tender to the Midway Volun-teer Fire Department. Council voted to approve adding the new vehicle to the fleet, spe-cifically for use in the rural fire response area.

***Feist reported that the

Statement of Financial Infor-mation (SOFI), the 2013 Gas Tax Report and the 2013 Stra-tegic Community Investment are complete and have been submitted.

*** Council has opted to in-

vest some money into plan-ning into the development of Riverfront Park rather than proceeding immediately with the new washroom directly across the street from the cur-rent campground washroom and showers as had been set out during budget plan-ning this spring. $40,000 had been budgeted this year for the washroom, but Feist said the amount is not sufficient and she recommended it be a multi-year project in any case.

MIDWAYCOUNCIL

Heritage Credit Union Direc-tor Darla Ash-ton presents a cheque for $4,700 to John Hibber-son of the Midway Community As-sociation at the West Boundary Branch on Tues-day, July 8. The money will buy portable stage units for Midway and Beyond Little Theatre.

John Hibberson’s dream of a properly equipped venue for community the-atre in the West Boundary is becoming a reality.

Hibberson, representing the Midway Community Association (sponsor of Midway and Beyond Little Theatre), accepted a cheque for $4,700 from Heritage Credit Union Director Darla Ashton on Tuesday, July 8 at the West Boundary Branch in Greenwood.

The cheque is the first of three annual instalments toward the purchase of a portable stage system for the theatre that will be located in the Midway Com-munity Hall.

“Because it is a lot of money, we are doing it over three years,” Hibberson explained.

“This cheque will buy the first four pieces; next year we will buy four more; and the last year four more and a ramp.”

The stage can easily be moved out of the way when the hall is not being actively used in a theatre production. The units are portable and can be easily taken down and stored on two rolling carts.

“It’s a beautiful stage and Canadian too, which is nice,” Hibberson said.Ashton explained that Heritage Credit Union assists the communities it

serves through their Community Investment Policy. “The policy helps to en-sure that the communities prosper, businesses and non-profit organizations thrive, and credit union members find that special place where their dreams can grow.”

“This is huge! It was the big ticket item,” Hibberson said as he saw his own dream take a big step toward becoming reality.

Hibberson said some old, not-so-portable stage units would augment the newer units until they can be replaced over the next two years.

“Part of the credit union philosophy is giving back to the communities and the membership that they serve,” Ashton added.

“This credit union philosophy of ethics and community investment is an-other good reason to invest in the local credit union, and especially this par-ticular credit union branch,” added Hibberson.

All going well, Midway and Beyond Little Theatre’s first production, a radio show drama based on the famous 1896 Camp McKinney Gold Bar Robbery, is planned for early November.

The stage is set

when they go through it.” The community has embraced the

run, which each year attracts upwards of 100 runners. The library, where Stepha-nie served as director for many years, continues to play a key role in organiz-ing the event. The Midway Hiking and Biking Trails Society grooms the River-walk and Mountain trails and provides volunteer support. Copper Mountain Flagging Company provides equipment and labour too. The Kelowna Running Club supports the run by donating their timing equipment and finish line flags. Many other contributors are listed on the run website at midwaylibrary.bc.ca

With 5k, 10k and 21k loops to choose from, there is something for everyone. Stephanie’s sister, Lila Norton, comes

from Grand Prairie, Alberta to partici-pate in a 1k walk.

Calgarian runners Ben and Kari El-liott and their young family were stay-ing at Christina Lake this week and had heard about the run on the Internet. “I think it is a really wonderful event that is going on because it involves the whole community in a really healthy way and for such a wonderful cause,” said Elliott adding, “for the library as well. We re-ally wanted to be a part of it and we were close by so we just drove up for the day.

“What a beautiful course. This is just a fantastic location. The course was lovely and the weather was perfect.” Ben posted the best time in the 10k and Kari finished first in the 21k.

Stephanie said the number of com-petitors for the 21k (half mara-thon) is growing. “Two did it under two hours and one at the two-hour mark—up that gruel-ling hill. That is pretty awesome.”

At 92 years old, Paul Lautard was the oldest participant; and Tammi Wilson, herself fac-ing Pick’s Disease, continues to show the rest of the world how to live life to the fullest and with passion by complet-ing the 5k. Like Tammi, many runners wrote names of family and friends who have battled cancer on the backs of their run T-shirts.

“The Kelowna running club participants said that they

come back because they are treated like family and that the course is excellent,” Stephanie said. “The lady who came in second in the 21k said no one had told her it was a mountain trail; however, she didn’t even break a sweat. Coming back over the bridge she stopped quickly to pet a dog and finished with a smile on her face.”

Stephanie’s sister Noella Miller, her-self a cancer survivor, did the 5k loop. “I would come here when John was ill and help my sister out as much as I could. This is my way to honour him and other family members who passed away from cancer.”

She is hopeful the care and nurtur-ing from her immediate family that the JLB Memorial Kettle River Run has re-ceived over the past five years has sol-idly established the event in the West Boundary.

She said this was the last year she will place an expectation on her kids that they come to organize it. “They have giv-en up two weeks of their holiday for the past five years to come and administer it. Now it is going to depend on the com-munity and the library.” Stephanie said she will help, “but I don’t think my fam-ily will be here to organize it.”

With the beautiful trails used in the run this event is becoming more popu-lar every year. “The serious runners who come, who aren’t part of the family, are amazed—first by the trails, secondly with the organization of the run and thirdly with our community of Midway.”

Fund hands out fundsthis year the Midway Part-nership Fund was pleased to be able to hand out grants totalling more than $6,000 for projects benefit-ing the people of Midway. Funding went to the new picnic table at the library, to recondition the caboose at the museum, to upgrade the washroom facilities at the curling club, and to help provide equipment for the new Midway little theatre group. shown here at presentation ceremonies are Casey Bot (left), Kim Lindseth, stepahnie Boltz, John hibberson, Midway Partnership Fund Chair John Fair, John Kohlhauser and steve stewart.

Day a wholelot of fun

Childhood memories that will last a lifetime are made at events like last weekend’s 15th annual Kettle River Family Fun Day in Midway’s Riverfront Park.

The Kettle River Museum in Midway hosted the day, pro-viding concession service starting with a French toast and sausage breakfast at 7:30 a.m. then switching to burgers and smokies for lunch and through the afternoon.

There are new horseshoes tournament champions in 2014. Southpaw Tom Sheldon and his partner Dave Sherbinin took first; finishing second were Dick Dunsdon and Ken Essery.

Family Fun Day always includes lots of activities for the kids. Steve Stewart and his band of helpers kept the fun com-ing with bicycle and tricycle decorating, a bike rodeo, novelty races, a penny carnival and toy boat building.

Of course there was the giant waterslide set up by the Midway Volunteer Fire Department and a barrel derby—the winner is the one who guesses closest to the time it takes an empty beer barrel to float from Ingram Bridge to Midway.

The temperatures were much cooler than the previ-ous weekend; the sky was overcast and the clouds just dark enough to make a good conversation starter.

At mid-day, just in case the conversation had slowed down at all—and since everyone has an opinion on the bagpipes—piper Gordy Jones came walking across the bridge playing his bagpipes to the delight of all.

Teams were awarded ribbons for their participation in games at the 15th annual Kettle River Family Fun Day.

(Above) Agnes was one of several Kettle River Museum volunteers who kept smokies and burgers fly-ing off the grill.(Below) Stephanie (3) and Cassandra (6) Morse were enjoying the Kettle River Day cake.

ver, B.C. has been appointed marketing agent for a secured creditor who has re-ceived conduct of sale from the Supreme Court of British Columbia under a fore-closure action to sell most of the assets of Mount Baldy Ski Corporation and related companies.

The primary objective of the market-ing agent is to find a buyer who will be able to complete an acquisition in time

to operate the resort for the upcoming 2014-15 ski season. For more informa-tion on the sales process and the details of the assets for sale go to: g-forcegroup.ca/sale-of-assets-mount-baldy/

With a base elevation of nearly 5,700 feet, Mt. Baldy boasts one of the high-est base elevations, most sunshine and lightest powder of any ski resort in the Okanagan. The resort offers a purchaser significant opportunities for recreation and real estate development.

G-Force Real Estate Inc. of G-Force Group draws on its experience in re-structuring, performance improvement, corporate finance and several industries to assist stakeholders in enhancing or recovering their investments and loans from businesses, real estate and con-struction projects in a variety of indus-tries including real estate development, hospitality, leisure, and other industries in British Columbia and Alberta.

Rattlesnakes love dangerous road

There have been several reports of rattlesnakes from throughout the valley in yards and, unfortunately, lying dead on the highway.

“The problem is the snakes like the warm pavement so they take their time going across the road,” said Midway resident Guy Owens. “They just kind of stretch out there and absorb the heat. There’s been a lot more dead ones seen than live ones.”

Rattlesnakes are a protected species and an important part of the ecosystem.

They prefer to avoid people. If you’re in rattlesnake territory, take precautions to stay away from them, and do not destroy them or their natural habitat.

If you do catch a rattlesnake unawares, give it space and let it go by as you stand still. Don’t try to scare away a rattlesnake because any sudden moves may be perceived as a threat.

Wear protective clothing, especially long pants and high boots, when you’re in snake territory.

Rattlesnakes bite if they’re surprised or cornered. Watch where you walk and what you pick up. A snake may look like a stick when it warms itself in the sun. Rattlesnakes may hide in long grasses or under rocks and logs. Don’t walk through long grass and don’t step over or move rocks or logs unless you’re sure there are no rattlesnakes around.

Oliver Fire Chief Dan Skaros gives public education sessions about rattlesnakes. A few years ago Skaros was bitten on the fin-ger by only one fang of a baby rattler and he very nearly died.

Skaros is experienced in handling them; in fact the Worker’s

The West Boundary Sustainable Foods and Resources Society (FAR) is bringing permaculture design consultant Allisa Bennett in from Kelowna this Saturday to present: A Peek At Permaculture.

According to their poster Permacul-ture uses a set of practical design prin-ciples to get the most energy out of a sys-tem with the least input from us.

The event will take place at the Rock Creek Health Center this Saturday, July

26 from 2 – 4 p.m.They promise a light snack and great

conversation. The event is made possible by a New

Horizons Grant for Seniors. Last Friday afternoon FAR did a lasa-

gne gardening demonstration at the gar-den at St Jude’s in Greenwood.

FAR president Leda Fair told the Times that all the planting boxes and materials came from the “Red School

House” community garden project in Rock Creek. “We had to give up on that one for this year, because we ran into dif-ficulties securing water for the garden,” said Fair.

“So this is in a sense - one community in the West Boundary is helping another and the efforts of all involved are not lost.”

FAR can be found on Facebook @ FAR Society or you can contact Erika Tafel 250-528-1000.

Compensation Board taught him, hence he removes them from vineyards so workers don’t get bitten. Because they are a protected species he relocates them rather than killing them.

He was bitten when he was removing one from a rock wall. He was in Oliver Hospital in only 15 minutes, but by then his whole body was convulsing.

The anti-venom for a rattlesnake bite costs from $1,500 to $2,000 per vial, and the doctors gave Skaros 16 vials. They saved his life—but he lost his finger, which was amputated because it no longer worked.

According to Skaros, the Grand Forks Hospital does not stock the anti-venom. So he suggests caution and using a walking stick when out hiking.

City Foods features fresh healthy productsManager Petra Picher who along with

her partner Doug Jensen decided to open the store and pizzeria because they want-ed to bring some fresh healthy products to Greenwood. Doug owned the facili-

ties. So Greenwood City Foods opened three months ago at 298 Copper Street in Greenwood’s downtown heritage core; co-incidentally in the same building that once housed the city’s Red and White Store.

The facilities had been upgraded to a pizzeria and deli a few years ago and were known as Jak’s Diner. So it took very little work to reopen. “We just rearranged the furniture, purchased some shelving and brought in some good quality food prod-ucts,” explained Petra. “And we are bring-ing in more and more new products every-day.”

Since then they have been putting in 12-hour days - 7 days a week. “We have four staff right now – we hope to expand in the near future with some more staff.”

Petra said that a lot of people from the surrounding areas including Jewel Lake are very happy to see them open. “They come to their vacation home and now they

have somewhere close to go shopping,” she explained. “We try and keep our prices ei-ther better or competitive.”

As well as offering the normal grocery stock they sell fresh roasted coffee from

the Trading Post in Rock Creek, fresh fruit and vegetables; in fact this week you can find fresh fruit from the Okanagan. “Picked yesterday morn-ing – so you can’t get much fresher,” says Petra.

They strive to bring in lo-cal produce when possible. “I have been talking to local farmers about bringing local beef, chicken and pork.”

Loose leaf teas are avail-able and a full selection of bulk foods. Included in their store is a wide variety of eth-nic foods—Italian, Thai, Chi-nese and East Indian foods. She has plans to bring in some health products too.

Plus they have the basic staples like ketchup, canned and dry goods, pet food and

household products. The deli section is filled with high qual-

ity meat and imported cheeses; and most of the deli meats are gluten free.

They can take special orders for their customers too. “We’ve been diligent about filling special requests as far as we can,” said Petra. Grocery orders come in twice a week and they encourage people to order ahead.

Greenwood City Foods carries Island Farms Dairy with a variety of yogurts, ice cream and almond milks.

Back in the kitchen Doug is in-venting new and tasty recipes for the menu, which includes pizza, pasta, salads, soups, subs and more. Doug makes his own bread fresh. Fresh fruit smoothies are available too.

They have special nights—Wednesday is all you can eat spa-ghetti and they host a home style Saturday Supper, which generally consists of a roast and baked pota-toes and salad. You can enjoy your meal at a comfortable table inside, out front at a sidewalk or take it home to enjoy!

Watch the sidewalk board for pizza specials too!

“I want to share healthy and fresh products with the community

and serve their needs,” says Petra. “All the shopping carts in the store are from the original Red and White Store; we want to have a bustling business like the Red and White used to.”

Greenwood City Foods is open from 8 to 8 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday they are open 8 to 9; and on Sunday from 11 to 7.

You can reach them at 250-445-6548. You can also like them on Facebook and check out their website at greenwoodcity-foods.ca.

Greenwood City Foods had a wonderful display at this year’s Founder’s Day complete with a covered wagon that dated back to the mid-1800s.

Alumnidescend on BCSS

An estimated 200 BCSS alumni, their spous-es and family mustered for dinner on Saturday night as the BCSS 45-year reunion brought many old friends together in Midway’s James G. McMynn Park for the first time in decades.

The main organizer was Brenda Lowe, with help from Tami and Bob Peters.

It came together from conversation between friends after the funeral for classmate Bud Hall-strom last year. “We were talking that in five more years it would be the 50th anniversary for the school,” Lowe explained. “But we decided not to wait five years. You never know what’s going to happen in the next five years.”

A lot of exchanging of phone numbers and addresses took place and it all bodes well for an even more successful 50th anniversary celebration in 2019.

Camping in James G. McMynn Park was arranged through the village. The organizers decided not to do a dance. “People didn’t want to be at a dance where it was too loud to talk,”

explained Lowe. Instead everyone joined one of the circles of lawn chairs in the park after dinner.

Tami Peters said the Midway Hotel put on an extra night of karaoke at the bar and everyone enjoyed a fabulous meal, with baron of beef and potluck salads providing lots of food.

Any money left over will go to an orphanage project in Tan-zania that Lowe is working on through The One Person Proj-ect (theonepersonproject.org), which she founded.

Pictures and comments from the reunion weekend can be found on their Facebook page: “BCSS 45 Year Reunion”.

Many Boundary Central Senior Secondary alumni took a tour of their former high school last Saturday afternoon.

Magician Leif David had assistance from the Queen and the King (check out the sideburns) during his show at Midway Community Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Magician Leif David started do-ing illusions when he was eight years old and today, at age 28, he performs over 200 events per year—70 of them during the busy summer season alone.

The Kelowna-based magician says that while the audience is being entertained he is also being reward-ed by watching people’s reactions and expressions.

The Midway Community As-sociation brought his magic show to the Midway Community Hall on Saturday afternoon. Before his show he mingled with the Kettle

River Day crowds and showed off a few samples of his wizardry.

The next event the Midway Community Association is plan-ning is an old time family picnic in the park on Saturday, Aug. 9, start-ing at 5 p.m. in the James G. Mc-Mynn Municipal Park. There will be games and relays for all ages begin-ning at 6 p.m.

The evening will end with a showing of the movie E.T. under the stars —start time approximately 9 p.m. Everyone in the community and surrounding areas are welcome to join the fun!

Hall fills with magic

The halls were packed last weekend with former students who had attend-ed BCSS during its 45-year history.
