The Midway RCMP detachment has been very busy over the past few days.

Corporal Judson Mayes told the Times in a phone interview on Tuesday evening that on Saturday, March 28 they responded to a break and enter of a motorhome trailer on a property between Midway and Rock Creek. A backhoe and trailer was stolen. Fencing and gate were damaged. Police have no suspects.

During the early morning hours of Monday, March 30, four vehicles along Fourth Avenue and Hartland in Midway were rummaged through by unknown suspect or suspects. Mayes said nothing was stolen, but personal

things in the glove box and centre consoles were picked through. RCMP again remind residents to lock their vehicles at all times.

On Tuesday, March 31, po-lice received a report of a stolen F-150 pickup from Dominion Street in Midway sometime on Monday night. The vehicle was apparently locked. Mayes re-ports they have no suspect or suspects at this time.

Also on the same night, three Midway RCMP vehicles were disabled between 1 and 2:30 in the morning. Tires were flattened at members’ residents, as were their personal vehicles.

RCMP remind residents to watch their places as well. “If we can’t respond, it puts the general public in great danger,” said Mayes.

Again on Monday night, a break and enter occurred at the Kettle Valley Golf Course. Gas, a welder, compressor and tools were stolen and there was approximately $2,000 to $3,000 damage to the seventh green when it was driven over. A vehicle with matching tire tracks was seized off of the Mt. Baldy Road later the same day.

The Fun Spot

Quote of the Week:Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.– Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744), Letter to Gay, October 6, 1727

Joke of the Week:Gallagher opened the morning newspaper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died. He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney. ‘Did you see the paper?’ asked Gallagher. ‘They say I died!!’ ‘Yes, I saw it!’ replied Finney. ‘Where are ye callin’ from?’

Water concerns spur planning process

Concern over a proposed expansion of the Miller Springs water bottling facility in the Sidley area has rural director Vicki Gee seeing this as a good time to initiate a process of community planning in the area.

“ ere are a lot of people in the area that are really concerned about water availability for the community and also about in essence what seems to be a growing  industrial  section right in the middle of agricultural land,” Gee said.

“ ere have been six di erent parties who have told me they have had declines in their wa-ter in the last few years,” Gee continued. “Nobody is saying it is or it isn’t Miller Springs; they are just saying, ‘Hey we need to know what kind situ-ation are we looking at here and is there going to be enough to go into the future?’”

Gee told the Times she is starting community planning for that area. “As part of that process we will look at everyone’s questions about resources and that kind of thing,” she said.

Owners of Miller Springs have submitted an application to the Agricultural Land Commis-sion (ALC) to increase the amount of water the bottling plant extracts from the aquifer. Gee said that application had come to the regional district for comment only and that it has since gone to the ALC.

Gee said she’d asked the RDKB planning de-partment what the timeline might be and was told it could take up to three months. “I don’t

know whether all this activity around this appli-cation will speed it up or slow it down,” said Gee, “but there has been a lot of letter writing.”

Gee acknowledged that not all residents in the area are opposed to the expansion. “But I tend to be hearing from the ones who are opposed,” she noted.

Gee said that the area being included in the community planning process at this time is re-ferred to as Rural Bridesville. It stretches from the Rock Creek Canyon Bridge to the RDKB boundary on the west, north as far as Mt. Baldy and along the Rock Creek Bridesville road as far as people have a Bridesville postal address.

She said approval has been given for the proj-ect this year. “So that means the planning depart-ment and nancial resources are available to it. We need to form a steering committee and that is usually composed of Area Planning Commit-tee (APC) members and the rural director. We will be talking about this at the APC meeting on Monday night.”

When the Times contacted Miller Springs for comment, they were referred to Naturo Invest-ments in Vancouver. People at that o ce declined to comment, but said the company president is due back in the o ce on ursday and will re-turn the call then.

More background on the Miller Springs sto-ry will be coming in next weeks’ edition of the Times.

Mr. REALTOR (R) says: “You should list with me as I can sell your property in 6 months or less.”

Mr. REALTOR (R) says: “If you list with me I can get you the max price for your proper-ty as I have 3 buyers just wait-ing to buy a place like yours.”

Mr. REALTOR (R) says: “Your house is easily worth $$$,$$$ so we should try even a bit higher on the listing.”

Be warned, don’t fall victim to false promises and quick sales gimmicks. Selling Real Estate is about a time and ef-fort to get proven results. So don’t be afraid to interview the REALTOR ® when going to list your property. Here are some basic but important questions to ask:

1. How long have you been selling real estate? While years of experience is no guar-antee of skill, real estate … like many other professions … is mostly learned on the job.

2. How many properties did you and your real estate brokerage sell last year?  By asking this question, you’ll get a good idea of how much experience the practitioner has. And how much of a mar-ket share the REALTOR ® has in your community. Bottom line, the more listings a REAL-TOR ® has, the more buyers they get usually.

3. How many days does it take you to sell the aver-

age property? How does that compare to the overall mar-ket? The REALTOR ® you interview should have these facts on hand, and be able to present market statistics from the local MLS to provide a comparison. If a property is taking years to sell it’s proba-bly over priced for the current market.

4. How close were the final sale prices  of the properties you sold to the initial asking prices? This is one indication of how skilled the REALTOR® is at pricing homes and mar-keting to suitable buyers. Of course, other factors also may be at play, including an excep-tionally hot or cool real estate market.

5. What types of specific marketing systems and ap-proaches will you use to sell my property? You don’t want someone who’s going to put a For Sale sign in the yard and hope for the best. Look for someone who has aggressive and innovative approaches,

and knows how to market your property competitively on the Internet. Buyers today want information fast, so it’s important that your REAL-TOR® is responsive.

6. What does the list-ing contract entail? What is the starting and expiry date on the listing? What is your commission and is it nego-tiable? When you sign a listing contract with a REALTOR® make sure they explain it and your obligations. There should be no blank lines in a contract to be filled in later. And there is no standard in commission, its an agreement between RE-ALTOR and Seller. So ask and understand why they price it where they do and what ser-vices you get for that price.

7. What’s your business philosophy?  While there’s no right answer to this ques-tion, the response will help you assess what’s important to the agent and determine how closely the agent’s goals and business emphasis mesh with your own.

8. What is your marketing strategy? These days having your property listed on MLS© is usually not good enough. Find out about and review the REALTOR’s ® website (s) and how many they have, google ratings, newspaper ads, tourist guides, TV / radio ads, custom signs and social media, etc. How many buyers are in their

data base system?ASK for the proof, not just

‘poofery’. Because the more the REALTOR ® is found online by the public, the more your list-ing is found. Request market reports, active web counts and copies of newspaper ads. If you get resistance or excuses then you need to proceed with caution as you probably won’t be getting those services from that REALTOR ®

9. How will you keep me informed about the prog-ress of my transaction? How frequently? Again, this is not a question with a correct an-swer, but how you judge the response will reflect your own desires.

Do you want updates once a month or do you prefer not to be bothered unless there’s a hot prospect? Do you prefer phone, e-mail, text,  or an in-person visit?

10. Could you please give me the names and phone numbers of your three most recent clients? Ask recent cli-ents if they would work with this REALTOR® again. Find out whether they were pleased with the communication style, follow-up, and work ethic of the REALTOR®.

On the occasion of her 95th birthday on March 22, long-time West Boundary resident Mary Rock met friends Michael Bonner and Donna Scott at the front door of Parkview Manor at 7 a.m. sharp. She invited them in for coffee, which she does every day, same time.

“Mary is blind, and quite hard of hear-ing, but she gets by, and thrives, sometimes with a little help from her friends, who usually mix her up,” Scott commented.Michael Bonner (left) helps Parkview Manor resident Mary Rock celebrate the beginning of her 96th trip around the sun.

Letters Policy

Not sure I was cut out for this moving thing. It is com-ing up on a month to the date when everything in and around this house has to be stored, dumped, sold, given away or packed for a trip.

The last time I moved was a quarter century ago. So I am out of practice.

I started by getting a lot of plastic totes and boxes. Then I rented my first ever storage locker. I had an old safety lock-out padlock from my Pope & Talbot days, so I figured I was ready to begin moving stuff.

I ran a load over to the storage and put the padlock on the door. Back and forth with an-other load or two and I was beginning to feel good about the progress. But I got busy with regular stuff and it was a couple of days later before I had another load in the car to move over to the storage.

One thing with those safety lock-out pad-locks from the mill is that there are no spare keys. You have one key and one lock—so that when the lock is on the electrical panel the only key that will open it is in your pocket.

When I got to the storage place I discovered a problem. The key that would open this particular lock was NOT in my pocket.

I searched the house, twice—to no avail. I looked in ev-ery pocket on anything I might have worn for the past few days. Then I looked in every pocket on anything I might have worn for the past week. No luck. No key.

I finally wound up driving around with the car load-ed with boxes and totes for a day and half before I could

overcome my embarrassment and went to Boundary Tool Rental to get a set of bolt cutters.

These were the smallest of the three sets of bolt cutters I would see that day; and since the heaviest thing I have pushed in a while is a pencil, needless to say I couldn’t break the lock with them.

Next I tried a bigger pair from the hardware store, but I still couldn’t cut through the lock.

Finally I called Carl Gough, owner of Mile ‘0’ Storage. He meets me at the locker 10 min-utes later with a huge set of cutters—must have been three or four feet long. Opened that lock like a hot knife through butter. I guess I should have been looking around for the fellow most likely to often use bolt cut-ters, instead of simply trying to find a guy who owns a set.

Back to the hardware store, where I buy a brand new padlock, this one with two keys.

That night I go the wildlife game banquet and Doug Janzen is there. He asked if I had

lost a key when I was in his store a couple of days before. * sigh *

But my padlock adventure wasn’t over yet. There was a raffle at the game banquet and I won a padlock. As a bonus, it had a locksmith’s business card taped to the box.

Many, many times during our 10 years together, Special K was called to come to my rescue when I had locked my-self out of the car, the house or even the office. No doubt she’s been getting a good chuckle out of all of this.

In fact, I strongly suspect she had a hand in that extra little touch with the business card.

Maybe there was a hand from above

You’ve no doubt heard of the TV show Amer-ica’s Dumbest Criminals. I think if the criminals who have been violating the peace and security of the West Boundary for the past little bit don’t have the sense to realize when enough is enough, then maybe they need to be tuned in to the obvious.

A word of advice: leave town and don’t come back. There is a proverbial line drawn in the sand and these thieves may have overstepped by a large margin.

The golf course has been open for only a few days and the same gang has hit them. Twice!

A lot of local people golf—they get an itch that starts sometime in mid-January, and the only thing that is going to satisfy the itch is a few good rounds of golf when spring finally rolls around.

Then along come these bozos who think it’s cool to steal from honest, hardworking folk and—just to add insult to injury—they made sure to needlessly drive a vehicle across a putting green on both nights they raided the course.

They were after the stuff at the shop and obvi-ously the golf course shop is not placed in such a way that the only access is across a green.

So these idiots had best figure out they have to-tally worn out their welcome in the West Bound-ary.

As mentioned above, a fair number of local people appreciate that golf course.

So you better move on—you don’t want to get caught on a dark night by some vigilant golfing fanatic with a nine iron out behind a lonely rural shed that you were breaking into.

Criminals have worn out welcome

AGM

Midway Community AssociationAnnual General MeetingMonday, April 13, 20157:00 pm at the Midway Community HallNew members welcome.

We need your support and input to better our community!

Rumplestilskien Fibre Arts Guild, Riverside Artists and the 4-H sewing club are all busily preparing for a show at the Rock Creek Pavilion on April 18/19.

The theme of the quilt show is “From Traditional to Trending.”

According to Lynda Dennill, Rum-plestilskien has some 20 members from across the West Boundary and they are aiming for 200 quilts on display.

They only do a show every few years.  Dennill said the group has been active for around 30 years. In 2010 they changed their name from Rumplestilskien Spin-ners and Weavers to the Rumplestilskien Fibre Arts Guild.

There will be a story display on com-fort quilts and demonstrations by the members on such topics as needle craft-ing, quilting, fabric pottery, modern

quilting and rug hooking.“Vendors will be at the show so that

the quilters can replenish their stashes of fabric or any new gadgets they may be looking for,” said Dennill. Vendors are from Oyama, Summerland, Oliver and locally.

Rumplestilskien meets twice a month, on the second and fourth Wednesday. For more information about the guild contact Judy Harpur 250-446-2406 or

Lynda Dennill 250-446-2431.The show will run on Saturday, April

18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admis-sion is $5 and Jerry Watson will be pro-viding a lun-cheon con-cession.

Rumplestilskien Fibre Arts Guild member Ann Neufeld looks at the lay out of quilt squares for a comfort quilt being made by the group for a local resident being chal-lenged by cancer.

Happy Spring! Welcome to the new library

board for this year. At our AGM, we said goodbye to Gerri Hollett who had served eight consecu-tive years on the board, and to Lynn Thomas who served one year—thank you both for your hard work. New to the board this year is Debra Brownhill; and returning members are Elaine Harrison, Carol LeSergent, Lynne Klaver, Shawn Whitelegg, Judy Loewen, Ann Mudrie (after a year off), and Nola Tutti.

We are again partnering with the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) to offer free computer skills lessons. Instructor Evelyn Booth will be here on Monday mornings for a few weeks to help people with basic computer skills, surfing the Internet, starting a Facebook page, beginning Microsoft Word or Excel, or using email.

There are still a couple of spots available; how-ever, you MUST register and meet with Evelyn to discuss your needs rather than just drop in this time around.

Please visit the library, or call 250-445-6111 Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 12 – 5 p.m., to register.

Thank you to all who have donated to our Bakeless Bake Sale this year. Your contributions greatly help with the library’s expenses, and are

much appreciated. And it’s not too late for anyone who hasn’t yet donated and would like to—donations are gratefully accept-ed any time during the year, and tax-deductible receipts are avail-able upon request.

Those who listened to CBC Radio’s Canada Reads this year will be happy to know that we now have all five of the books available: Ru, In-tolerable, When Everything Feels Like the Movies, And the Birds Rained Down, and The Inconve-nient Indian.

The goal was to choose “one book to break barriers” for all Canadians to read, and after four days of lively discussion and debate, Kim Thuy’s Ru was the winner. This is a story of a young woman forced to leave Saigon during the Viet-nam war, then coming to Quebec via a Malay-sian refugee camp, and is based on many of the author’s own experiences.

The Greenwood Library will be closed for the Easter long weekend, April 3-6, and will open again on Wednesday, April 8 at noon.

Welcome new board members

OPEN

The Kettle Valley Golf Course is open for the 2015 season. Taking on the role as clubhouse manager is Sam Hall, replacing Krisi God-dard who has moved on to the grounds keeping depart-ment.

Sam, along with course manager Aaron Rexin, in-vited the Times to stop by to get a picture announcing the opening of the course for the new season.

Judging by the delicious homemade cookies that Sam brought out there will be plenty of satisfied diners at the golf club this year.

She describes the upcom-ing menu as “good food; fresh stuff ” with signature salads, good burgers and, “a lot more homemade stuff ” and both she and Aaron invite the pub-lic to stop in for lunch or din-ner.

They are planning some signage for the highway that will help let people know the restaurant is open to the pub-lic.

The clubhouse itself has been given some TLC over the past winter. The door be-tween the entryway and the till and grill has been wid-ened and an interior wall has

been opened up to reveal a framed glass window that was part of the original clubhouse building before the addition. “The changes make the whole place feel a lot more open and inclusive,” says Sam.

For the first few weeks they will serve soups and chillies, garlic bread, maybe a sandwich. As the season picks up a bit the restaurant will have consistent hours—and, according to Sam will feature killer butter tarts and fresh baking on a regular ba-sis. She talked of her EBTKS Salad—everything but the kitchen sink, saying she plans

to offer fresher options, not so much fried food.

“Come for a cup of coffee and a cookie or anything right up to a full meal,” said Sam. Both she and Aaron were born and raised in the Kettle Valley—so what customers at the golf course experience is real local hospitality.

Sam said they both are looking forward to welcom-ing everyone back, and hope to make new friends this year as well.

As of last Friday, the course is open. Spring rates are $20 plus tax.

The Heritage Credit Union has given the Midway and Beyond Theatre a sec-ond installment of $4,700 on a three-year grant program that is allowing the the-atre to purchase a portable stage outfit.

John Hibberson, representing the Midway Community Association (sponsor of Midway and Beyond Little Theatre), accepted a cheque for $4,700 from Heritage Credit Union Director Darla Ashton last month at the West Boundary Branch in Greenwood.

The cheque is the second of three an-nual installments toward the purchase of a portable stage system for the the-atre that will be located in the Midway Community Hall. “Because it is a lot of money, we are doing it over three years,” Hibberson explained.

This year’s cheque will purchase a second set of four pieces to add to what was bought in 2013. Next year they will buy the last four sections and a ramp.”

The stage can easily be moved out of the way when the hall is not being ac-

tively used in a theatre production. The units are portable and can be easily tak-en down and stored on two rolling carts.

Ashton explained that Heritage Cred-it Union (HCU) assists the communi-ties it serves through their Community Investment Policy. “The policy helps to ensure that the communities prosper, businesses and non-profit organizations thrive, and credit union members find that special place where their dreams can grow.”

“Part of the credit union philosophy is giving back to the communities and the membership that they serve,” Ash-ton added.

Hibberson said the four new sections would arrive prior to the production of their second show—Nana’s Naughty Knickers—that opens for a run of four shows beginning on April 23. “The HCU more than does its bit to support the communities it serves,” wrote Hib-berson in a letter of thanks to the credit union.

Heritage Credit Union Director Darla Ash-ton is seen here presenting a cheque for $4,700 to John Hibberson of the Mid-way Community Association at the West Boundary Branch in mid-March.

DID YOU KNOW?

AT THE 2014 FALL FAIR, DID YOU KNOW THAT…

DURING THE REST OF THE YEAR, DID YOU KNOW THAT…

This year the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Associati on’s Annual Fair is being held on September 19th & 20th and the theme is “Celebrati ng 101 years of the Rock Creek Farmers’ Insti tute – Sow it, Grow it, Show it.” The RCBFA’s 2015 annual operati ng and fair day budget is $190,000.00 or an average of $520.00 per day. The Fall Fair, which is the RCBFA’s major fundraiser accounts for 85% of the revenue to operate and maintain the faciliti es and put on the Fair. The re-maining 15% comes from facility and event rentals and donati ons and sponsorships. Preparati ons are in full swing for the 70th Annual Fair and in the coming months you may be approached to volunteer your ti me, donate a prize or sponsor an exhibit class. The RCBFA is successful because of the commitment of its members and volunteers and the contributi ons and generosity of the community. The ti me spent volunteering, or the donati on of a prize or sponsorship, by extension, contributes to the success of other local organizati ons which benefi t from uti lizing the well maintained Fair Grounds Facility. For example:

• Seven local groups and organiza-ti ons, including Boundary Minor Hockey, Boundary District Curl-ing Club, Beaverdell Community Club, Bridesville Community Club, Kett le River Lions Club, King of Kings Church and Grand Forks Rotary Club grossed approximately $38,000.00 combined;

• The RCBFA donated $750.00 to the Boundary Secondary School graduati ng class for helping out on Work bee Weekend and Fair Weekend;

• The Borderline 4-H Lamb Club raised approximately $275.00 on Cow Chip Bingo;

• 42 members of the Boundary “C” 4-H Club and Borderline 4-H Lamb Club parti cipate and earn achieve-ments;
