EDITORIALCanadian ranchers continue to enjoy unprecedented beef prices—it’s making small scale farming once again viable.

CELEBRATIONMargaret and Johnny Eek celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on May 7 and enjoyed a wonderful party.

A sizeable group of Sidley Mountain and ru-ral Bridesville residents appeared at a recent Ad-visory Planning Commission meeting to make their concerns known about the proposed new official community plan.

The second meeting of the Area E Advisory Planning Commission was held on Monday May 4 at the Rock Creek Health Centre. The 12-member committee along with area director Vicki Gee met to discuss the creation of a sepa-rate steering committee that would oversee the development and implementation of an official community plan (OCP).

The group of residents were there to voice their concerns about any planning proposal that would impact their freedom as landowners.

According to long-time resident Art Harf-man, many property owners believe that consul-tation with them should be part of the planning process. “The committee has no obligation to consult with residents prior to implementing an area plan, and we feel this wrong.”

Harfman went on to explain that farmers are concerned that a plan could, for instance, put regulations in place to prevent property im-provements or additions without government permission, which could hamper their ability to smoothly run their farming operations.

Area E director Gee reported that many resi-dents of the region, which stretches from the Rock Canyon Bridge west to the RDKB bound-ary, north as far as Mt. Baldy and along the Rock Creek Bridesville road as far as people have a Bridesville postal codes, are in favour of a plan. There is significant opposition as well, she said.

“Residents who are opposed to planning have

been asking the regional district to hold a refer-endum to decide whether or not there is a ma-jority in favour of starting the planning process,” Gee said. “I’ve confirmed with both regional dis-trict staff and the ministry responsible for local government that there is no authority to do so.

This also applies at the end of the process. Leg-islation provides for public input, including a public hearing.  The board is the deciding body about whether or not to approve the OCP after it’s

developed, based on input at the public hearing.  When asked why she feels a plan is necessary

for the able, she said, “Planning is a tool, defined in legislature, that allows communities to plan their future. When there is no community plan-ning, development is random and can cause land use conflicts. Planning is the only tool available to regional districts to manage such conflicts.”

The APC will meet again in the near future to continue its selection of the steering committee.

Fire destroys houseBreak-in at abandoned house

On April 30, Midway RCMP re-sponded to a reported break-and-enter of an abandoned house on Highway 33. Nothing was stolen though a window was suspected to be broken.

A suspect was stopped by Kelowna RCMP, but the witnesses could not positively identify the suspect, and it could not be confirmed whether the window was broken during the break-in or prior.Suitcase turned in

POLICEBRIEFS

Event will be held later in MayHow lucky we’ve been to be en-

joying a warm and sunny spring! As you may have noticed, the

library did not host our annual Mother’s Day event this year. We decided to mix it up this year—after chatting with McMynn’s, we felt that later in May would be warmer and would give us a chance to host more vendors.

And more vendors you will find! Kane’s Har-ley Davidson, Granton Motors Tractors, Linens and Things, Scentsy, Steeped Tea, and yard sale tables to name a few. There is live music, and a concession put on by Midway Public Li-brary with pancakes starting at 7 a.m. and then onto burgers and hot dogs for the afternoon.

All proceeds from the event will go to the ongoing opera-tions of the library. Come out and enjoy a fun day in the com-

munity! Don’t forget to stop by the li-

brary to check out our new and notable books. We have a great se-lection of light summer reads, as well as the latest Robert Ludlum

action novel. If you’re looking for a fun children’s book,

come and check out the Very Hungry Bear, it’s one of my favourites!

Boundary Creek Times Thursday, May 14, 2015A4

I had a conversation with a neighbouring rancher the other day, and, as we often do when he drops by, we talked about the weather.

I asked him if the dry spell we are experiencing was nor-mal, and he replied that it was not that unusual. However, it was his next statement that I found some-what alarming. “If we don’t get a fair bit of rain in June, we may be in trouble,” he said.

I turned sheepishly to look at my own pas-ture, which was shorter than it should be at this time of year, and still not ready for the woolly creatures to graze, and shook my head. We do not have an irrigation system, relying solely on Mother Nature to do her job and provide us with lush green grass by the middle of May, yet here we are approaching month’s end with the prospect of having to either continue feeding our flock hay, or sell a number of our sheep to lessen the burden on our fields.

California has been in a state of drought for three years now, with little or no sign of relief on the way. Could B.C. be headed for the same scenario? Possibly. With a signifi-cantly lower snow pack this year, and another forecast for next winter, what does the future hold for a region reli-ant upon that snow pack as well as an abundance of spring rainfall?

While there has been some precipitation of late, it may not be enough to support those farms, both large and small that do not use irrigation.

The province’s Wildfire Management Branch has pre-dicted a nasty wildfire season due to dry, hot conditions, and Environment Canada supports that prediction with

their weather model for summer 2015. Temperatures are expected to be higher than normal, with below-normal precipitation.

Let’s hope both are wrong!

The Rock Creek Fall Fair will see significant improvements this year in the areas of fair en-try and fee collection.

When I volunteered at the gate several years ago, I was amazed by the antiquity of the sys-tem. Money collectors would simply take the cash, stuff it in a metal box, and every hour or so somebody would appear to transfer the wads of $10 and $20 bills to a plastic envelope, which would then be whisked away to a secure loca-tion somewhere on the grounds.

The system was obviously flawed and in need of im-provement, and this year visitors entering the fair through the main entrance will do so through four brand new wickets all equipped with cash registers. Organizers are also hoping to equip the campground entrance in the same fashion.

Pierre Sinclaire is the new entertainment director, and has included a talent competition in this year’s lineup. Au-dition forms can be found at rockcreekfallfair.ca.

Facelifts inside the grounds include reconstruction of the shade shelter, which was destroyed during a wind-storm, and the booth facades will be sanded and repainted by volunteers.

Hats off to all of the people who work throughout the year to put together this iconic Boundary event!

California dreaming?

Canadian ranchers continue to enjoy unprec-edented beef prices that are making small scale farming once again financially viable.

This is a far cry from the 2003 crisis, when about 40 countries closed their borders to Canadi-an cattle and beef products due to the detection of mad cow disease (BSE), eventually forcing many small ranchers out of business. The selling price of a steer fell from $1,200 to $200 almost overnight, and this slump lasted for 10 years, during which time only the large ranches and feedlots were able to survive while having a sizeable negative impact on the culture of small farming.

Only a small handful of farmers in the Bound-ary region were able to survive the market crash, and even today very few are able to derive an in-come exclusively from farming, despite the cur-rent price of cattle. Today, a cow and its calf can sell for as much as $3,800, compared to $250 in 2004, though that has not necessarily stimulated a wholesale return to full-time farming for smaller ranches.

In the Beaverdell area, for instance, there is concern over the increasing wolf population, which has deterred some ranchers from reinvest-ing in cattle. Some area farmers have chosen to open their pasture to cattle that are on their way to feedlots, which provides a steady income through-out the summer without the potential headaches of tending their own animals.

The prices have been driven up by several factors, among them the scarcity of cattle these days when compared to even five years ago. The drought that has ravaged the western U.S. has greatly impacted the cattle herds in Texas, which has resulted in a spike in the price of beef.

Pete Bonds, president of Texas and Southwest-ern Cattle Raisers Association, says even with re-cord prices the entire beef industry is still hurting.

“Cattle prices are extremely high right now, pri-marily caused because in 2011 we had to slaughter so many of these cows. By doing that, what was happening was we were shutting down the facto-ries and now that effect is starting to show up with extremely high beef prices. It has not recovered at all. We have started getting some rains, but what really scares me is this wet spell in an extended drought period. What will make me personally feel good will be two years of normal rainfall.”

Also affecting the price is the rising demand for beef in the Asian market, which has driven prices of ground beef here in Canada to more than $5 per pound, and leaner cuts to as high as $20 per pound.

Life on the ranch is good for now, and it’s about time.

Beef prices remain strong

In conversation with members of the Class of 2015

BCSS grad Cody Hardy says he’s al-ways enjoyed travelling around and ex-periencing new things.

That’s good, because he moved to the Boundary from Saskatoon last Oc-tober and that involved more than a few changes. His school back in Sas-katchewan had 1,200 kids, he played on the school football team and had more course options.

While missing his senior year on the football team was a disappointment, he replaced that activity with hockey. “I played hockey for the first time in my life. I’d never skated before I moved here. That would have never happened if I hadn’t moved here and I absolutely loved it!

“Another really great thing about this

school is that the teachers focus a lot more on you,” Cody said. “My teachers have always helped me out and taken the extra step. That’s something I have really appreciated because I come from a place where none of that happened. If you don’t do your work then it was see you later.”

After grad Cody plans to stick around for a couple of weeks to experience what a B.C. summer has to offer. Then it is off to Saskatchewan where he plans to use family and other connections to find a summer job.

This fall he will begin a four-year apprenticeship in welding. He sees his welding ticket as way to get out and travel, saying he’s really keen on visit-ing Australia.

Cody got to experience B.C. firsthand for his Grade 12 year and plans to return to his native Saskatchewan to begin his career. He’s also served as an excellent ambassador from the prairies to his fel-low BCSS students. CODY HARDY

IntroducingCody Hardy

Students prepare for graduation

Sam Hildebrand came to the Bound-ary from Powell River in Grade 9. He says he’s liked it here. “Nice weather and quiet.”

When school career counsellor Pam Storie asked his favourite course he quickly replied that it was music— specifically playing guitar. When she

asked about hobbies he answered just as quickly again—playing guitar. He says his main influences have been Eric Clapton and Duane Allman.

This summer he is planning to find work, either locally or in Kelowna. He has worked at Vaagen Brothers saw-mill and is skilled in operating small and mid-sized equipment, chainsaws and most power tools. He claims a fair amount of mechanical knowledge and enjoys working with his hands.

His future will include music and his favourite memories of BCSS was play-ing during intermissions for the school drama productions.

Facelift is ‘much needed’Greenwood council sat for its regular

meeting on Monday, May 11. O’Hairi Park facelift proposed

The meeting began with a presenta-tion by resident Chuck Tasaka regarding O’Hairi Park. Tasaka and his delegation made numerous recommendations to

council that would generate a much-needed facelift for the park, designed as a memorial to the Japanese internment during the Second World War.

This list of recommendations includ-ed redoing the gazebo to look like a Jap-anese teahouse or barn, and the erection of a monument for Japanese war veter-ans that served in Canada.

Much of the money could conceiv-ably come from grants and fundraisers, with the city providing some infrastruc-ture to support the project. Council took the recommendations under advise-ment and said they would be pleased to meet with Tasaka’s delegation to discuss the details.

Bylaws approvedChief Administrative Officer Robin

Dalziel presented the council with two bylaws for their reading. Bylaw 888 is in respect to the city’s financial plan for the years 2015 to 2019 and Bylaw 889 is for the levying of rates from municipal, hospital and regional districts.

Councillor Ashton opposed both bylaws citing lack of time to examine the details of the laws, though council passed both.Campground on the move

Mayor Smith recommended tem-porarily moving the municipal camp-ground from its current location west of O’Hairi Park to just south of Lions Park by the current washroom facilities.

The mayor suggested that removing the campground from its present loca-tion would improve access to washroom facilities and result in cleaner activities in the surrounding area.

Council agreed.

Chronicles of Boundary Country from the pages of e Boundary Creek Times Volume V, No. 36 – March 18, 1899

Small-Pox Scare – “ e St. Paul (Minneso-ta) Dispatch says that J.H. Carter, colored, was yesterday sent to the pest-house, being discovered to have a clearly developed case of small-pox.

“Carter is a sleeping-car porter on the Great Northern Railway and just came from Spokane. He was employed on a special train which president J.J. Hill and other o cials of the GNR who are now making a tour of inspection of that road. Mr. Hill’s private car was fumigated thoroughly and his entire party vac-cinated.”

Times Editorial – “Greenwood has now retrograded to the position of Grand Forks in its early municipal days. Most things are done ille-gally, and the City Solicitor says nothing. ere is some consolation in the fact, that if nothing is said, there is a saving clause in the Municipal Act which makes illegal acts legal a er a certain time expires.

“Some cities have thrived in spite of bad municipal government. Greenwood still has a chance.”

Rendell Block Construction – “ e plans of Messrs. Rendell & Co.’s two-storey building on the north-east corner of Greenwood and Copper Streets have been received and building opera-tions will begin as soon as the stone work is com-

pleted. e building will have a 50-foot front-age on Copper Street and run back 75 feet on Greenwood. e Bank of Montreal will occupy the corner.” (ed. – the building is now occupied by the Greenwood City Foods)

Railroad Construction Uncovers Gold – “ e grading of the Columbia and Western Railway has uncov-ered many ledges of gold-bearing quartz. e latest strike is on Roy’s Ranch. Dr. Christie was in the vicinity attending to sick hors-es when the word came from rail-way employees. He lost no time in locating a claim on the ground. A rush of prospectors in the vicinity of Roy’s Ranch has resulted in the whole country being staked.

“ e assays from the Ella (the name under which the doctor’s

property will struggle for fame) are of the most encouraging nature.”

New Fire Hall and City Council Cham-bers for Greenwood – “ e city council has made arrangements to purchase two lots on the north side of Greenwood Street, above Govern-ment Street. It is the intention to build thereon a two-storey building.

“ e ground oor will be used as a re hall and the upper oor will be divided into a council chamber and remen’s sleeping apartments. It is also probable that arrangements will be made for one or two cells in the building, as the provincial jail is at present too far from the business centre. e police o cers nd it a very di cult matter to haul drunks and incapables from the city to the lock-up.”

The Mother’s Day Greenwood-wide yard sale didn’t have quite the turnout as hoped, but it was a gorgeous weekend and the locals put on a great show. (Above) Herb Stump offers up some fine banjo plucking for passers-by; while (below) The-resa McLeish pretties up the main street with beautifully-crafted tile art.

Margaret and Johnny Eek of Rock Creek celebrated their 7Oth wedding anniversary on May 7, and enjoyed a wonderful celebration party at the Rock Creek fairground, with many well-wishers drop-ping by to offer their congratulations. Married the day before Victory in Europe Day in 1945, the Eeks recalled how their wedding in Rossland took place during an unbelievably emotional few days, as word of the ceasefire made its way over the airwaves. Asked why they have enjoyed such a successful marriage, Margaret replied, “He was always my rock.” Here’s to 75, Margaret and Johnny!

Summary Statement: As indicat-ed above, significant portions of the Boundary area’s natural resources have

long been and continue to be “exported” from the Boundary area with little to no benefit accruing to the Boundary-area residents.

These exports include livestock for-age, water and, most significantly, large

volumes of timber. The desir-able objective for the Boundary would be to have over the long term and at the very minimum, a positive net balance flow of fi-bre into the TSA.

While some timber exports are logical (e.g. there are no suit-able facilities in the Boundary to handle power poles, peelers for plywood or large sawlogs), many are not. Rather they are based almost solely on econom-ic gain for a select few. The deci-sions to approve and/or engage in these export activities have been made, in most instances, by the provincial government or the larger companies.

For example, the provin-cial government eliminated the appurtenancy clauses from TFLs which allowed compa-nies to sell their logs anywhere whereas previously they had to manufacture them in their local sawmill(s). These changes were made at the request of the forest industry.

Your Decision. As Bound-ary residents you/we can affect the future of the Boundary area.

We have two choices; we can do nothing and let the current scenarios continue or we can work to have most of the Boundary area’s timber re-sources processed (with more value added) in the Boundary area. With this latter decision the jobs and related spin-off benefits created therefrom will accrue to all Boundary resi-dents instead of being exported elsewhere and accruing to a se-lect few.

A suggested way to do this is to respectfully (but very strongly) develop and make a formal request to the provin-cial government, specifically the MFLNRO, to transfer the BCTS AAC allocation to a ju-dicious mix primarily made up of a Greater Boundary Area Community Forest which could also inherently comprise wood-lots and perhaps an enhanced Woodland Licence for the Os-oyoos Indian Band.

This would greatly comple-ment the current West Bound-ary Community Forest and make it considerably more vi-able as a profitable business venture. It would also develop an enhanced Boundary Com-munity spirit, promote a semi-formal partnership and en-

hanced relationship among the Osoyoos Indian Band, the communities and rural areas of the Boundary. Such a relation-ship would, in turn, benefit everyone in and adjacent to the Boundary TSA.

If the above parties had control over ~ 50% + of the Boundary AAC they would have ultimate authority over where it was manufactured. Not only that, they could, and most likely would, allocate the harvesting of this timber to local contractors and delivered to the lo-cal mills.

Currently much of the timber that leaves the Boundary is harvested by contractors residing outside the Bound-ary. A multiplied loss to the Boundary area.

Another huge benefit would be that the quality and extent of resource man-agement applied to these forests would be determined by the Boundary people and would likely be better than at pres-ent. Such undertaking would also bene-fit the local mills, both Interfor and Vaa-gen, as their log delivery costs would be significantly reduced and other benefits would inherently accrue to both compa-nies and the associated logging and sil-viculture contractors.

The decision regarding the future disposition of the Boundary area tim-ber resources is truly up to you, the Boundary residents. For far too long the decisions regarding the develop-ment, exploitation, and disbursement of the rights to B.C.’s natural resources have been made by big government and big industry. Painfully true in the Boundary as indicated above. You (we) cannot expect any meaningful change if we continue as we have in the past.

The alternative is for meaningful change to come from the bottom-up and only the local people who reside in the Boundary can affect such change. Hope-fully you will become involved and be a part of this change!

Here’s how: If you’re interested, would like more information and would like to ensure that the Boundary com-munity has a more equitable say over how their (your) forest resources are managed then please contact your local elected representatives as listed below and let them know your feelings on the matter.

• Municipal Council members and staff. (Grand Forks, Greenwood and Midway)

•  Regional District Directors and members of their respective Advisory Planning Committees.

• MLA Linda Larsen•  Local groups such as boards of

trade or chambers of commerce, eco-nomic development committee, wa-tershed coalitions, Granby Wilderness Committee, sportsmen’s groups, Com-munity Futures, and other local groups concerned with the well-being of their communities, forests, watersheds and related resources.

• Minister of Forests, Lands and Nat-ural Resources, Steve Thomson.

Forests: Managed? Exploited?

FRED MARSHALLSubmitted

“As Boundary residents you/we can affect the future of the Boundary area,” argues Local RPF Fred Marshall. “We can work to have most of the Bound-ary area’s timber resources processed (with more value added) in the Boundary area.”

While some timber exports from the Boundary are logical (e.g. there are no suitable facilities in the Boundary to handle power poles, peelers for plywood or large sawlogs) many are not. Rather they are based almost solely on economic gain for a select few.

In this five part series Marshall suggests that BC Timber Sales annual al-lowable cut in the Boundary be reallocated to “a judicious mix primarily made

up of a Greater Boundary Area Community Forest which could also inherently comprise woodlots and perhaps an enhanced Woodland Licence for the Os-oyoos Indian Band.”

He argues that this would greatly complement the current West Boundary Community Forest and make it considerably more viable as a profitable busi-ness venture. It would also develop an enhanced Boundary Community spirit, promote a semi-formal partnership and enhanced relationship among the Os-oyoos Indian Band, the communities and rural areas of the Boundary. Such a relationship would, in turn, benefit everyone in and adjacent to the Boundary TSA.

In Memoriam Alice Glanville rememberedWith the recent passing of Alice Glan-

ville (April 28, 2015), the Boundary Coun-try has lost a dedicated pioneer, lifetime educator and treasury of historical wealth.

Alice (nee Clark) was born in Midway 95 years ago, and spent her childhood in Greenwood, along with her seven siblings. Despite limited family resources, Alice was able to achieve her dream of becoming a teacher a er attending Normal School in Vancouver. At the tender age of 19, her teaching career commenced in 1939 at the one-room Brown Creek School on the North Fork, the beginning of her in uence as a lifetime educator in the Grand Forks area.

A desperate need for lling wartime jobs on the home front lured Alice away from her teaching assignment and she ended up in Montreal in 1941, spending the next two years working in a gun fac-tory. With a youthful spirit for adventure, she took an opportunity during this time to tour the Maritimes on bicycle with a group of friends.

A er her marriage in 1943 to James Glanville, Alice was committed to rais-ing her family, which included three sons; Harvey, Ross and Clark. Life on the fam-ily dairy farm on the North Fork pro-vided many interesting experiences, and, like many people of her generation, Alice learned to be self reliant.

In 1955 Alice resumed teaching and

spent the next 25 years as teacher/librarian at Grand Forks Secondary School. During this period she returned to the Universi-ty of British Columbia for seven years of summer school, receiving a Bachelor of Education degree in 1967. Balancing fam-ily, work, studies, and farm life required a special commitment and sacri ces were o en made.

Alice retired from teaching in 1980 and turned her focus to community service.

is included 19 years as a trustee with the local school district (10 years as board chairperson) serving in numerous capaci-ties both at the local and provincial levels. She gained a reputation for being thorough in preparation, assertive in debate, knowl-edgeable about issues, and well versed at

trouble shooting. Alice also assumed the role of marriage

commissioner for 20 years, conducting wedding ceremonies in locations such as mountain tops, house boats, and ski hills.

Perhaps the most in uential of Alice’s pursuits was her dedication to sharing and preserving the history of the Boundary Country. She and her husband, Jim, were instrumental in preparing much of the historical content that has been featured in the rst 15 editions of the Boundary His-torical Reports.

Alice’s historical journalism expanded with the publication of her rst book, Schools of the Boundary, in 1991, chroni-cling a detailed history of 100 years of edu-

cation in B.C.’s Boundary district. In conjunction with Grand Forks centennial celebrations, Alice

and Jim also co-authored two historical books. In the Shadow of Ob-servation, written in 1987, takes the reader through a nostalgic jour-ney of the community’s past, and Grand Forks ... Where the Kettle River Flows, published in 1997, is a revelation of the life and times of the people and events that have carved their niche in the Sunshine Valley.

Alice’s community presence was also felt as a representative on the Boundary Health Council, a committed advocate and volunteer with the local public library, and a primary resource person for the Grand Forks Museum.

She received numerous tributes from di erent administrative lev-els, which included being granted Freedom of the City of Grand Forks in 1998, being inducted into the B.C. Historical Society as an honou-rary life member, and being awarded the Governor General’s Com-memorative Medal for community service.

An interest in travel and learning more about the history, culture and politics of other parts of the world, took Alice on many memo-rable group excursions. is included extensive visits to the former Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China and numerous countries in South America. Alice and Jim travelled together throughout Cana-da, reaching its extremities in Newfoundland, Bella Coola on the west coast and Inuvik in the Arctic.

ey also enjoyed touring extensively throughout British Columbia, most notably visiting more remote locations on back country roads.

Alice had a very reliable memory for individuals and events that crossed her path and she maintained contact with an extensive net-work of people whom she encountered during her lifetime. In 2011 she moved to Salmon Arm in order to be near family, but the Boundary was her domain, it was a place of deep pride, and Alice did her part to keep its heritage alive.

She has woven part of the fabric of this community, and will be missed by her family and friends.

A memorial celebration of Alice Glanville’s life is scheduled for 1 p.m. on May 30 at the Gospel Chapel in Grand Forks.

Boundary woman named to HELPA Boundary resident has been named to

a provincial organization that will be influ-ential in guiding children’s development.

Laranna Androsoff of Grand Forks is one of seven members selected from throughout B.C. to be on the Human Early Learning Partnership’s (HELP) Aboriginal Steering Committee.

“It’s a provincial body run through the University of British Columbia (UBC),” said Androsoff. “The Aboriginal Steering Com-mittee helps guide HELP, which is doing some ground-breaking, world-renowned research. They’re really quite progressive in what they’re doing.”

HELP is a collaborative, interdisciplin-ary research network exploring how dif-ferent early environments and experiences contribute to inequalities in children’s de-velopment.

Androsoff was asked to submit an ap-plication to the committee after speaking at the global childhood summit.

She was very surprised when she re-ceived the call to join the committee.

“It was such a busy time, I was a couple of days late with my application—I never do

that,” she said. “This opportunity just wasn’t meant to be. Come October of last year they said they had an opening and asked if I would consider becoming a member. That was a huge honour and I didn’t expect it.”

The Aboriginal Steering Committee in-cludes members from throughout the prov-ince including two elder advisors.

Androsoff is the only member from the Kootenays on the committee.

“It was really exciting to be able to bring a voice from the Boundary to that com-mittee at the provincial level because we’ve never had a voice on the committee before.”

Androsoff has already met with the group in April when she attended her first meeting, which was in Vancouver.

“We have two large meetings a year,” she said. “The Human Early Learning Part-nership present to the Aboriginal Steering Committee about their projects and get their input to ensure that Aboriginal people are properly represented and that the tools they are using to collect their research are culturally safe.”

Androsoff said since she is so new with the group, she is just learning the ropes. She is looking forward to the next meeting in November.

Androsoff added that her work on the

steering committee will allow her to bring her experiences back to the groups she works with in Grand Forks and the Bound-ary. Androsoff is a member of the Bound-ary Métis Community Association and the Boundary All-Nations Aboriginal Coun-cil. She is employed as an Aboriginal early years community outreach worker through the Boundary Family and Individual Ser-vices Society (BFISS).

“I’m Russian on my father’s side and Danish and Métis on my mother’s side,” she said.

Androsoff said she was happy to share the results of the Vital Signs project from the Phoenix Foundation with the commit-tee. HELP also leans heavily on data re-ceived from the Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI) and Early Development Instrument (EDI), which surveys teachers and students on factors affecting childhood learning and development.

“It’s really exciting to be part of these new and upcoming projects that are going to be really valuable in the research that they do,” said Androsoff. “(It’s really im-portant) to see where the vulnerabilities lie in our communities and how we can help families and children to thrive because that is the whole goal of this.”

Midway resident Le-anne McLaren has em-barked on a tasty new business venture known as Tower Garden.

It is an innovative system for growing fruits and vegetables year round without the use of soil or traditional fertilizer. It works on aeroponics, which is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil.

The system uses both water and air to produce more colourful and nutritious food and is capable of producing more than $100 worth of produce each month.

McLaren was introduced to the system by a friend in West Kelowna, whose son has autism. According to his mother, doc-tors were amazed by the disappearance of 80 per cent of his autism markers after several months of a diet heavy in fruit and vegetable smoothies fortified with a product known as Juice Plus.

She had also purchased several Tower Garden systems and was continuing to enrich her son’s diet with high quality produce grown on her balcony!

Tower Garden is extremely environmentally-friendly, using 90 per cent less water than traditional gardens, and very little electric-ity as well. Both the pump and grow lights (used only in colder months) draw no more power than home aquarium components, so are very economical to run. The system also uses no pesticides.

McLaren is a distributor for Tower Garden, and can be contact-ed through her website at [email protected].

High above Rock Creek, author Erika Tafel has found the perfect blend of lifestyle and creativity as she begins work on her second book.

Following on the heels of Slave to the Farm, which chronicled her time spent as a ward in Quebec’s juvenile system in the 1980s, her latest title will document the construction of the family’s underground house, the fifth one to be built in the neigh-bourhood.

Tafel and husband Will Pedlar, who helped build the other dome houses, live off the grid, have no debt and, when all is said and done, will spend less than $50,000 for their dream home.

Pedlar has milled all of the lum-ber used in the house, harvested largely from their 20-acre lot and is using recycled stainless steel and granite to furnish the kitchen. The house will be solar powered and use composting toilets rather than a sceptic system, with the waste being used to feed their gardens.

Tafel avoided describing her and Pedlar as “back to the landers,” though certainly feels their lifestyle encapsulates a whole set of values not unlike those embraced by the hippies of the ’60s and ’70s, who strove to turn their backs on capitalism and return to a more community-oriented way of life.

This movement has become a global one, made more viable by today’s communication technology, which allows for easy sharing of philosophies and technology.

Tafel has also recently completed work on a screenplay based on Slave to the Farm, and a pro-ducer is currently being sought to help take her story to the big screen.

In the meantime, she and Pedlar will continue to chip away at the construction of their underground home and enjoy their idyllic lifestyle here on what they call the top of the world.

Tafel finds balance
