Some residents in the West Boundary had to be put on an evacuation notice early this week because of a large lightning-caused fire in the Zamora area of Westbridge.

There have been 11 lightning-caused fires in the Boundary region in the last several days, mostly near Rock Creek. The largest fire, in the Zamora area of Westbridge, is 26 hectares in size and caused the RDKB to issue an evacuation no-tice to 10 residents there. The fire is still active but now 100 per cent contained, and the evacuation notice has been lifted.

A campfire ban is now in effect throughout the Southeast Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety, and will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified. Locally, the ban on fires prompted the cancella-tion of Greenwood’s Canada Day fireworks dis-play.

The recently formed Trails to the Boundary Society has appointed a new trail coordinator for the season.

Greenwood resident Ciel Sander will be re-sponsible for assessing the condition of the West Boundary portion of the Trans Canada Trail and prioritizing required maintenance of the trail. Area E Director Vicki Gee, instrumental in the allocation of funds for Sander’s hiring, said the creation of the society was in response to Bound-ary residents’ requests that she become involved in the development of trails.

The Fun Spot

Quote of the Week:There are lots of ways of being miserable, but there’s only one way of being comfortable, and that is to stop running round after happiness. If you make up your mind not to be happy there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have a fairly good time.– Edith Wharton (1862 - 1937), The Last Asset, 1904

with the province to manage the Trans Canada Trail throughout West Boundary,” Gee said. “The other area directors were hesitant to partner directly with Area E, but suggested I support the creation of a non-profit society to partner with the province.

“The society was incorporated in May of this year and will soon sign a partnership agreement with the province. The work of the society is supported with grant-in-aid and gas tax money. Its mandate is to create social, recreational and eco-nomic benefits from trails for our communities. This includes promoting the Trail as a key link connecting our communities, as well as working with tourism, business and economic develop-ment organizations.”

Sander added, “Input will be sought from local residents and communities to learn what the future goals of the TCT are for West Bound-

ary residents.  The Trails to the Boundary Society is actively seeking assistance from individ-uals and organizations that are interested in helping with this initiative, in addition to volun-teers who want to help with trail stewardship.

“The Trans-Canada Trail is known around the world and is Canada’s national trail that tran-sects our communities. We want to connect the TCT to commu-nity development initiatives in the West Boundary and engage

our local and regional communities to maintain it for future generations.”

Those interested in volunteering may contact Sander at [email protected]. The general contact for the society is  Ross Elliott, who can be reached at 250-449-2333 or [email protected].

“School’s out for summerSchool’s out foreverSchool’s been blown to pieces”

That’s a verse from Alice Cooper’s 1972 salute to the end of the school year. In retrospect, I’m not too fond of the third line, but hey, it was the seventies and I was 16.

Some radio stations banned the song from their airwaves, suggesting that it encouraged rebelliousness against childhood education. Many teachers, parents, principles, counsel-lors, and psychologists shunned the song and demanded radio ban it entirely and perma-nently.

Not surprisingly, in 2004, School’s Out was ranked number 319 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2009 it was named the 35th best hard rock song of all time by VH1 and, in 2010, the song was performed on the TV show American Idol. I guess it is a classic, after all!

My point, I suppose, is that the song was, for my-self and many of my schoolmates, a timely celebration of our summer freedom, which always seemed certain to offer us so much more than school could ever do. I doubt, however, that my mother shared that sentiment, and I likely had second thoughts myself as soon as I had to start the dreaded “summer job”. Oh well, on to “School’s Back in Session,” hitting the airwaves Sept. 8! Have a great summer everybody!

“Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the Noon Day Sun” is another of my favourite song lines. Written by Noel Coward in the early 1930s during a tour of Vietnam, it somehow rings true for this ex-Pat.

I didn’t experience serious heat until I first toured the U.S. southwest 20 years ago with my old friend David Hawkes, on a road trip that saw us marvelling at the can-yons and deserts of Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. When we stopped at one point in New Mexico and noticed the temperature was heading for 45 C, we looked at each other and nodded our heads in agreement. We LOVED it!

I have no idea why I enjoy the heat; I was raised in the temperate British Isles and have no recollection of sum-mer sojourns in Spain or other warm environs. Mine was a childhood spent largely in mild winters and moderate summers; in fact, I can recall many a cool and blustery August afternoon spent on the coast during our annual family vacation.

But heat is one reason I am here; in fact the warm spell the Boundary has been enjoying of late suits me just fine, despite my acknowl-edgement that it proves challenging for both livestock and crops alike.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just a mad dog from Bridesville, and the English part is pure coincidence.

All that said, my best wishes go out to all of the dedicated firefighters who are being kept extremely busy throughout the province. We

owe them, big-time!Disappointment for Canada’s women’s soccer team last

Saturday, as they were eliminated from the World Cup tournament by an opportunistic English team. It’s been a fabulous competition, and has, again, highlighted the ap-peal of women’s sport, long overshadowed by “the men’s game.” The soccer has been fast and furious, and I’ve little doubt the tournament will end just so.

My prediction? The U.S. team will narrowly defeat Ja-pan in a thrilling final.

On another sporting note, kudos to the Boundary Women’s Softball League and their wrap-up tournament held last weekend. I swung by to take some photographs, but found myself regularly putting my camera down in fa-vour of enjoying the play, which was excellent fast-pitch softball. There was a lot of skill on display, and the team-work was impressive too.

Congratulations to the Merchants from Grand Forks, who defeated their cross-town rivals the Black Sheep to capture the trophy, and to the organizers, who put togeth-er a first class tournament!

A celebration of summer freedom

It has been predicted that by the end of this centu-ry, there will be 18 million centenarians in the world, and likely twice that number of people enjoying life into their 90s. One such Canadian is featured in this week’s issue: Elena Chambers, born in the Cariboo and a long-time summer resident of Jewel Lake, turned 100 on June 9. We wish her a very happy birthday indeed!

It is our government’s tradition  to send a personal greeting to her subjects on their 100th birthdays, and these days Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Queen Eliz-abeth and Governors General have a lot more letters to write. That’s because a record number of people world-wide are living to 100 and beyond.

According to British researchers, for instance, one-third of babies born in the U.K. in 2013 are expected to live to 100. In North America, the population has seen similar trends. As this centenarian population grows, scientists are seeking a better understanding of how and why those people do eventually die.

A recent study finds that those living beyond 100 are more likely to have “old age” listed as their cause of death rather than chronic diseases, according to lead author  Dr. Catherine Evans. Evans’ study found that most centenarians die from pneumonia or general frailty rather than cancer or heart disease, while chron-ic diseases are more likely to kill people who only make it to their 80s and 90s.

She was surprised by the size of the 100+ popula-tion. It has nearly doubled every decade since the 1950s in the U.K. and global statistics are very similar. As North American and Western European birthrates continue to decline, at least amongst the Caucasian populations, so too does the rate of mortality, and peo-ple in their 80s and 90s are now commonplace. This is likely due to nutrition, fitness and contemporary medi-cal practices, pushing the average Canadian’s lifespan to just over 81 years. This trend certainly makes one wonder about caring for so many elders, and whether or not medical systems will be able to bear the strain of the significant weight placed upon them by this ex-panding demographic. Let’s hope so, because it seems increasingly likely that soon, 90 may just be the new 70!

Historical society hosts picnicThe Boundary Historical Society hosted its annu-al picnic at Brown Creek Hall this year. Members and guests socialized under the shade shelter before moving indoors to hear a presentation from Richie Mann (below), who spoke about the Dewdney Trail Project and about creating a society—possibly to be named the Dewdney Trail Heritage Society—to better enable restoration and preservation of the iconic trail.PHOTOS: DELLA MALLETTE

Some benefits of buying a houseIf you’re like most

first-time home buy-ers, you’ve probably lis-tened to friends’, fam-ily’s’ and coworkers’ advice, many of whom are encouraging you to buy a home. Howev-er, you may still wonder if buying a home is the right thing to do. Relax. Having reservations is normal. The more you know about why you should buy a home, the less scary the entire process will appear to you. Here are eight good reasons why you should buy a home. Pride of Ownership

Pride of ownership is the number one reason why people yearn to own their home. It means you can paint the

walls any color you de-sire, turn up the volume on your CD player, at-tach permanent fixtures and decorate your home according to your own taste. Home ownership gives you and your fam-ily a sense of stability and security. It’s making an investment  in your future. Appreciation

Although real estate moves in cycles, sometimes up, some-times down, over the years, real estate has consistently appreciated. Provincial and Federal statistics are available to show that over the long term Real Estate almost always moves forward. Cheaper Than Renting

Many times when mortgage rates are low a mortgage payment is less money than a monthly rental amount. Also when you are renting you never get that money back. When you have a mort-gage payment though; your money goes into your house. Tax Benefits

There are many tax benefits out there for home owners, specifically if they have farm status. Talking to your ac-countant is the best situation in this re-gards.

So if you think buying a home or property is in your cards talk to a REAL-TOR® and find out how you can make it work for you.

not just about loansWhen Stu Dale needed some

last minute financing to open the Grand Forks Station Pub 20 years ago, he turned to Commu-nity Futures Boundary for help. He was in the midst of renovat-ing the former CPR station when he realized he needed more money to complete the project. “It was hard to get funding from banks and credit unions because of the type of business we were in,” he said. “They shied away from giving money to pubs and restaurants.”

That’s when Community Futures stepped in with a loan to help finish the renovations. Founded in 1992, Community Futures Boundary is a non-prof-it, community-based organiza-tion that provides access to capi-tal as well as business support to entrepreneurs like Stu who want to start or expand their business but and are having difficulty getting financing.

Since its inception, Com-munity Futures Boundary has grown its original loan fund of $1.5 million to $3.6 million—money that has been invested into local busi-nesses throughout the re-gion. They have loaned just over $12.88 million to more than 354 small businesses over the past 23 years, resulting in the creation and maintenance of more than 700 jobs. Those investments have helped lever-age additional funds from other sources that have also been in-vested back into the local econ-omy.

“We were originally created to lend money to high risk busi-nesses,” said Wendy McCulloch, general manager of Community Futures Boundary. “Our rates are a little higher, but we have very flexible repayment terms; people can pay off their loan at any time without any penalties. Sometimes, we can do projects with less security than con-ventional lenders. We can take chances that banks and credit unions can’t.”

And that money isn’t just sit-ting in a bank. “It’s out in the community,” says Susan Green, Community Futures loans man-ager. “All the interest we collect goes back into the loan fund and gets reinvested in the commu-nity through other loans.”

Community Futures offers loans up to $150,000 but is able to consider higher limits under special circumstances. In 2001, they introduced a micro loan program that makes it easier for people to borrow smaller amounts up to $10,000.

“Micro loans are the heart

and soul of Community Fu-tures,” McCulloch said. “It’s truly about the people and the community.”

So far, they’ve made 86 micro loans totaling $364,840—the smallest was for $475. The turn-around is quicker, Green said—days, not weeks—and clients get 25 per cent of the interest back when they pay their loans off on time. More than business loans

Providing businesses with access to capital is a big part of what Community Futures does, but it’s not the only service they provide. “Businesses don’t grow in a vacuum,” McCulloch said. “If a community isn’t growing or moving forward, then it’s dying. Community Futures is the spark, the catalyst that gets things going.”

Community Futures was es-

tablished by the federal govern-ment to help communities deal with the effects of the recession in the 1980s; effects that con-tinue to threaten B.C.’s rural communities as they grapple with high unemployment and a decline in the resource industry. The Boundary office is one of 34 Community Futures groups in British Columbia and one of 269 across Canada. Each organiza-tion is governed by a volunteer board of directors drawn from a cross section of the community. It’s that local knowledge that sets each Community Futures organization apart from the oth-ers, and that directs the types of activities Community Futures Boundary gets involved in.

“Local board members are a huge asset,” McCulloch said. “We couldn’t have a better Board. These volunteers have strong business backgrounds and know what’s going on in the region. They know the commu-nities; they know what will work and what won’t.”

Since 2007, Community Fu-tures Boundary has worked with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and the Boundary Economic Develop-ment Committee to help diver-sify the region’s economy. One of the more noteworthy initia-tives they’ve been involved with is the abattoir which went into

production in early May. They helped the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society access funds for the ab-attoir and then helped get it up and running. They’ve also sup-ported the Christina Living Arts Centre, the Kettle Valley Food Co-op, and the Phoenix Moun-tain Ski Hill.

“These community-based projects don’t happen over-night,” McCulloch said. “Com-munity Futures comes in when other options have been ex-hausted. We’ve helped projects like the welcome centres in Rock Creek and Christina Lake, the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, the multi group accommodation project in Grand Forks, and the fall fairs in Rock Creek and Grand Forks. There are so few places for community groups to

go to for support these days. Sometimes we can provide financial support, other times it’s administrative support, like photocopying, or someone to work at an event, or a meeting room at no charge.”

“We don’t do any of this alone,” she said. “We do it with the community. We need to build capacity in rural areas or our com-

munities won’t survive. If there are stakeholders around, I want them at the table, and I will sup-port them through thick and thin.”Employment services

Community Futures Bound-ary has also been delivering employment services on behalf of the provincial government since 1997. In 2012, it was des-ignated a WorkBC Employ-ment Services Centre, offering a range of services to people who are either unemployed or under-employed. Since then, it has assisted 724 people through job search activities, training, employment counseling and job placement. Of those, 200 secured employment, 104 went on to additional training, and 27 started their own business.

Through WorkBC and other contracts, Community Futures Boundary now employs 14 peo-ple in its Greenwood and Grand Forks offices. “Our organization has the expertise and capacity to deliver these services locally,” McCulloch said. “If we hadn’t gone after the WorkBC con-tract, those services could have been delivered by agencies out-side the region, and the jobs of delivering those services would not have gone to people in our communities, people who are extremely well qualified and an asset to the Boundary region.”

Greenwood, Midway nab grants Communities in the riding of

Boundary-Similkameen have received $1,967,731 as part of almost $75.2 mil-lion being invested into communities across B.C. to meet local needs includ-ing more policing, new equipment, in-creased community safety initiatives, infrastructure and service delivery pri-orities.

• Grand Forks has received a Small Community grant of $330,813.

• Greenwood has received a Small Community grant of $251,363.

• Keremeos has received a Small

Community grant of $244,407.• Midway has received a Small Com-

munity grant of $215,203.• Oliver has received a Small Com-

munity grant of $340,028.• Osoyoos has received a Small Com-

munity grant of $336,395.• The Regional District of Okanagan-

Similkameen has received a Regional District grant of $112,797.

• The Regional District of Kootenay-Boundary has received a Regional Dis-trict grant of $136,724.

“The distribution of these grants will be made entirely by local authorities based on their priorities and planned

projects,” Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson said. “They also reduce the burden on taxpayers, which is especially important in communities with a small tax base.”

This is the second of two annual pay-ments. A payment of $40 million was made in March 2015.

Since 2009, the Small Community, Regional District and Traffic Fine Reve-nue Sharing Grants have provided more than $792 million in funding to support B.C. communities enabling them to in-vest money in projects that are identified as priorities at the local level.

Site chosen for Granby SmelterChronicles of Boundary Country from the pages ofThe Boundary Creek Times Volume V, No. 53 – May 20, 1899

➤ Site Chosen for Granby Smelter – “Cowbells pealed, bonfires blazed, and the patriotic people of Grand Forks wept tears of joy, when it was announced that the Granby Mining & Smelting Com-pany would erect its 500-ton smelter on the North Fork of the Kettle River, about a mile from the City of Grand Forks. The choice of sites had been narrowed down to two. The one on the North Fork and one on the bench overlooking Midway.

“The latter has its advantages, but has one serious drawback inasmuch as it was thought that Boundary Creek had not a sufficient water supply, and that it would be necessary to have a pumping station on the Kettle River immediately below.”

➤ Mines to be Electrified – “L.A. Campbell, the manager of the West

Kootenay Power & Light Company, states that his company intends to sup-ply power to the mines of Boundary Creek and to the City of Greenwood. At Greenwood, there will be a sub-station with branch lines constructed to Dead-wood, Copper, Summit, Phoenix, Wellington and other camps (ed. – the sub-station is still there). The line di-rect from Bonnington Falls through to Greenwood City will be a double three-phase one, so that in case of any mishap on one-set of lines, the current can be switched off on to the other.”

➤ Bridge at Midway – “W.H. Norris and W.R. Megraw, who own 107 acres across the river from Midway, have had a strong bridge erected to connect the town with their property. It looks as if it would stand the force of the highest water in the Kettle River. Messrs. Nor-ris and Megraw have sub-divided their

property into large building lots.”

➤ A Wide Open Town – “The wide open town system is being introduced with a ven-geance in Greenwood. The denizens of Silver Street and across the creek have now the privi-lege of contributing to the exchequer of the city

without the formality of appearing be-fore the police magistrate.

“May Day was celebrated in Green-wood by the appearance of nearly half a hundred ladies of various ages and colours wending their way through the city to the police court, where the land-ladies each paid $15 and their inmates $5 to City Clerk Taylor.

“They were each presented with a corporation receipt, marked ‘miscella-neous’, which is supposed to grant them immunity from further interference during the month.”

Interfor awards $2,000 scholarshipA Boundary youth is one of six young

people in B.C. named as this year’s recipi-ents of Interfor’s Dal Shemko Memorial Scholarship, which will provide financial assistance to support their academic and career goals.

Katrina Makortoff (Grand Forks), An-drew Blattler (Coastal Woodlands, Sun-shine Coast), Zach Friedenberger (Interi-or Woodlands, Nakusp), Heather Hackett (Castlegar), Aleesha Hewitt (Adams Lake) and Wade Shapansky (Hammond, Maple Ridge) have received $2,000 each.

They were chosen for their academic achievements, volunteer and community contributions, and educational and career goals. All of the recipients have parents or guardians who work in Interfor’s Cana-dian Operations.

“The Dal Shemko Memorial Scholar-ship supports our commitment to our employees and the communities where we operate,” said Ian Fillinger, senior vice-president, Canadian Operations, in a recent press release. “These six students have exciting futures ahead of them and

we are proud to support their academic goals. We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”

Makortoff, who last month graduated from Grand Forks Secondary School, plans to go to the University of British Columbia – Okanagan to study science and pursue her goal of becoming a radiation therapist. Katrina coaches with the Boundary Devel-opment Basketball Program.

The Dal Shemko Memorial Scholar-ship honors the life of long-time Interfor employee, Dal Shemko.

Artist’s bronze accepted at StampedeFor the second consecutive year, Christina Lake artist Joan Bartlett has had

one of her bronze sculptures selected for the Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction which will take place on July 9.

One of the largest art auctions in Canada, the Stampede auction attracts hundreds of art patrons each year, eager to acquire work by some of the best artists in Canada and the U.S.

“I’m very happy to have a piece in the show again,” Bartlett said. “Of the pieces I entered for jury consideration, it wasn’t the one I thought they might select. You just never know what will appeal to the jury. ‘All Ears’ was inspired by my musings about why some animals were given big ears. t was a fun piece to make and it’s fun to look at. I guess you’d call it ‘not quite traditional’ west-ern art.”

Bartlett’s love of all things western is reflected in her lifelike western and wildlife sculptures. She is represented by galleries in the U.S. and Canada and has had work juried into many major art shows.

Most days you can find Joan working in her gallery/studio, Little Burro Western Art, at Christina Lake. The gallery is one of the stops on this year’s Columbia Basin Culture Tour which takes place Aug. 8 - 9.

Former soldier finds much support

The Long Way Home project promotes something dear to Dave and George Bachmier of Grand Forks.

Long Way Home founder Cpl. Kate MacEachern, a former tank driver and soldier, is preparing for her longest journey yet in her quest to raise awareness and money for veterans and awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Proceeds from this year’s walking challenge will go towards PTSD service dogs and the Wounded Warrior Weekend, a gathering for veterans.

Grand Forks resident Dave Bachmier suffers from PTSD. He has a service dog, Pinnaar, and credits the canine with helping him cope not only as a husband and homeowner, but as a businessman as well.

MacEachern will make her way through the Boundary the first week of July, and to help promote the Long Way Home and support its benefactors, Dave and his wife George are holding a barbecue at Neighbours Computers on Saturday, July 4.

“This resonates greatly with us,” George said.

The barbecue will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; $5 gets you a hot dog, cold drink and watermelon, she explained. “All proceeds go to The Long Way Home 2015. Also, enter to win two tickets to the GEM Theatre to see Max, a move about a U.S.

Marine service dog.”Local fire departments and the Royal

Canadian Legion Branch 59 are also stepping up to welcome MacEachern.

She and her team are walking into Christina Lake on July 3 and the Lake fire department is hosting a barbecue in their honour. The next morning, The Long Way Home team is walking to Grand Forks with the Lake firefighters as an escort as far as the boundary between Grand Forks and Christina Lake; Grand Forks Fire/Rescue is meeting them at that point and will escort them into Grand Forks.

The Legion is hosting a luncheon for the team, although the time of noon is tentative. The team will then walk on to Greenwood and points west.

MacEachern’s work to raise awareness for soldiers and issues such as PTSD partially stems from a near-fatal incident during training in 2007 in which she suffered a broken neck, spinal cord damage and a fractured skull.

She founded The Long Way Home in 2011.

In 2012, she walked (with a full ruck, in full uniform) from CFB Gagetown, N.B. to Antigonish, N.S. a total of 576 kilometres.

A year later walked from Cape Breton, N.S. to Ottawa, Ontario, a trek of nearly 2,000 kilometres. This time she was a civilian. She carried a full ruck but this time, no uniform.

This year’s walk will be her final walk. On May 1, MacEachern stepped off

from Nipawin, Sask. and began the walk to Chilliwack, B.C. This is the longest trek

yet. She will cross three provinces and 3,100 kilometres in 85 days.

“This year we focus on coping and healing,” she says in her mission statement at her website, thelongwayhome.ca.

“When the search began for our benefactors this year, we wanted to round out our thought process that help looks different for everyone. Help comes in many shapes and forms. PTSD service dogs are one tool that is becoming more and more utilized and more and more understood. After much research and

checking, we finally made a decision.”Rebecca, the founding member of the

NASH Project (which rescues neglected and abused dogs and horses) and her daughter Emily will be travelling with The Long Way Home via horseback.

“We are fundraising along with generating awareness so please follow us, and get involved—no support is too small! Time to get boots on, saddle the horses and head out. Talk the talk and walk it,” MacEarchern stated.

Long Way Home will wind its way through West Boundary after stops in Christina Lake and Grand Forks

Ask yourself, is religion true?

“Is God Dead?” That was the ques-tioned blazed in stark black and red across a Time magazine cover in 1966.

This theological debate is not new—in 1882 the German philosopher Ni-etzsche famously wrote, “God is dead.” The debate continues, fueled by the birth of a new religion of materialism, now a hundred-year-old experiment.

It still flourishes under the premise that happiness is dependent upon bet-ter food, health, education, living con-ditions and the accumulation of wealth. Yet many people today still feel a sense of anxiety and discontentment, that something is missing in their lives.

Recent studies indicate that unhappi-ness has increased even though we have been through a century of tremendous material progress. So what causes hap-piness?

We find ourselves living in a society experiencing great transformation, and a world that is passing through a crisis that is moral, spiritual, political and so-cial in nature. Religion has declined to such a state that atheism is at the highest level in human history.

But at the same time a resurgence of religion is exerting its influence. While there remains a great distaste for orga-nized religion, exacerbated by the rise of fanaticism, many people have a long-ing for a deeper understanding of the human spirit and what gives purpose to their lives—fortunes are being made writing and speaking on the topic.

Countering this movement, critics of religion have become more vocal. We may even agree with much of what they have to say as they often expose the ir-rationality of those things that have gone wrong with religion. Critics such as Bill Mayer, with his recent film, Religulous,

or outspoken physicist VictorStenger (“Science flies you to the

moon. Religion flies you into buildings”) may very well be doing a great service for religion by accelerating a process of reformation and renewal that it must go through.

The American writer and philoso-pher Will Durant wrote, “Civilizations begin with religion and stoicism; they end with skepticism and unbelief and the undisciplined pursuit of individual pleasure.”

So we come back to, what causes real happiness? The World Health Organiza-tion has estimated that by the year 2030, depression will be the most prevalent and debilitating illness in the world in both rich and poor nations.

If an increase in material well-being does not bring about true happiness, perhaps then it is an attitude we foster rather than something we possess. Per-haps it is about a condition of being rather than of having, which implies that in order to understand what brings us real happiness, we have to understand our true nature as human beings.

Shoghi Effendi, a prominent figure of the Baha’i Faith in the last century, wrote: “The more we search for our-selves, the less likely we are to find our-selves; and the more we search for God, and to serve our fellow-men, the more profoundly will we become acquainted with ourselves, and the more inwardly assured. This is one of the great spiritual laws of life.”

This journey of discovery has always been assisted by revelation emanating from the world’s great faiths, all of which are divine in origin; whose basic princi-ples, in their pure form, are in complete harmony; and whose teachings are but facets of one truth.

According to Baha’i principle, “... they differ only in the non-essential aspects of their doctrines ... their missions rep-

resent successive stages in the spiritual evolution of human society.”

Progressive revelation infers that humanity is guided regularly and de-velopmentally for both our spiritual and material well-being and that divine guidance—renewable, progressive and untouched by outer forms and imita-tions—comes to us at prescribed points in our history. And so, if we seek an an-swer to the question, “Is religion true?” we might find the following concepts helpful:

• True religion must be relevant to the needs of the day. The universal prin-ciples of every recognized world religion remain constant—it is the exigencies of an ever-advancing civilization that change.

• True religion must be in harmony with science. Religion without science ends in superstition, dogma and ritual, and ultimately, the collapse of society. When in balance, humanity progresses.

• True religion must be the cause of unity amongst the peoples of the world, otherwise it defeats its purpose.

• True religion must be pure and free of any man-made teachings or doctrines.

• True religion must be based on the belief that religious truth is relative and not absolute, for no religion can right-fully claim to be the final revelation from God to man.

IS RELIGION TRUE?• True religion must affect the actions

of its followers in a positive way - it can-not simply be defined as a system of be-lief, it must also be one of action.

• Lastly, true religion must be able to naturally unite all religions, not by force or coercion, but by the mere recognition that all religions are one. It must have the power to see that all share the same DNA, all come from God. It is “... the changeless faith of God, eternal in the past, eternal in the future.”

High temps prompt heat stress alert With temperatures in the low to

high-thirties forecast to continue Thurs-day through Sunday in parts of the Koo-tenay region, WorkSafeBC is alerting employers and workers of the increased risk of developing symptoms of heat stress and heat stroke.

“Workers in the construction, trans-portation and forestry sectors comprised the majority of the 27 time-loss claims we had in BC last year,” says Shawn Mit-ton, WorkSafeBC’s Regional Prevention Manager, South Okanagan-Kootenay. “But it’s important to remember anyone working outside is potentially at risk.”

Heat stress occurs when your inter-nal temperature increases faster than the

body can cool itself. Symptoms include excess sweating, dizziness and nausea. If not addressed quickly, additional symp-toms such as heat cramps, or potentially lethal heat stroke can rapidly develop. Prevention of Heat Stress:

• Drink plenty of water (one glass ev-ery 20 minutes)

• Wear light-coloured, loose fitting clothing made of breathable fabric

• Take rest breaks in a cool well ven-tilated area. Allow your body to cool down before restarting your work

• Do the hardest physical work dur-ing the coolest part of the day

• Know your personal risk factors: medications, skin disorders, sleep depri-vation, poor physical fitness, pre-exist-

ing medical conditions• Know the signs and symptomsWorkSafeBC requires employers to

conduct heat stress assessments. As ap-propriate, employers must have a heat stress mitigation plan and are required to provide personal protective equip-ment, education and training in recog-nizing the symptoms of heat stress and heat stroke. Workers are required to par-ticipate in monitoring conditions, and checking co-workers for symptoms.

Employers and workers can go to: Preventing Heat Stress at Work or con-tact the WorkSafeBC Prevention Line with questions or concerns: 1 888 621-7233.

Long-time Jewel Lake summer resident Elena Chambers turned 100 years old on June 9.

Born in Harpers Camp (now known as Horse-fly) in the Cariboo during the gold rush, Cham-

bers was born three months premature at 4lbs 3oz. She was so small that she fit perfectly into a shoebox, and rested on a hot water bottle to keep her snug.

Horesefly was a former mining camp, where life was certainly challenging, but it gave Chambers a strong start to a long and rewarding century. She eventually found her way to Spokane, where she worked as a nurse at Deaconess Hospital for over 20 years until her retirement.

She continues to enjoy her summers at Jewel Lake, while maintaining an apartment in the eastern Washington city.

Her key to longevity? “You are what you eat,” said Chambers, “and I have always be-lieved in the ability of stewed tomatoes to help prevent cancer or slow down its growth.”

Happy 100TH, Elena!
