New fires

Harpur turns to sugarNathan Harpur stands amidst his rye crop in one of his Midway fields. PHOTO: ANDREW TRIPP

Midway farmer Nathan Harpur used a less conventional method of protecting his grain crops from insects this season, and it appears his approach has paid off.

Harpur, a fourth generation farmer, decided against spraying his crops with chemical pes-ticides, instead opting for a more “organic” ap-proach which saw him treat the plants with a simple mix of sugar and water. Other additives included food grade phosphoric acid, humic acid, ammonia, borax and, finally, vinegar to take the mixture to a PH of 6.6.

Not only did this help control pesky insects such as grasshoppers by attracting more ben-eficial insects, but it may also have allowed his crop to flourish despite a severe lack of moisture. While neighbouring farmers saw significantly less growth of non-irrigated crops, Harpur’s has proven to be “pretty decent.”

He also attributes his success to an early plant-ing of seed. While many parts of the Boundary were still snow-covered, Harpur found the soil in his Midway fields warm enough in late March to accommodate sowing.

The use of sugar as a crop spray is not a partic-ularly new practice, though it has been attracting a lot of interest in modern agriculture of late, as farmers look for non-chemical, more economical ways of crop protection.

Some have turned to very unconventional means of pest control. Since 2004, according to a report featured in The Guardian, farmers in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, have been us-ing cola as a pesticide because it’s considerably cheaper than conventional sprays and, they be-lieve, does just as good a job of protecting their rice crops. Other states have followed the trend.

Cola manufacturers strongly disagree that their products can be used as pesticides because they say there is nothing in the drinks that can be used as pest control. But, the farmers in the Durg, Rajnandgaon and Dhamtari districts of Chhat-tisgarh disagree and have successfully used the sugary beverage to protect their rice plantations against pests. In fact, Rajnandgaon recently set a world record in rice production without the use of GMOs. Using cola as pesticide isn’t exactly 100 per cent natural or organic but most believe it must be safer than toxic pesticides.

In fact, the practice of using soft drinks instead of pesticides, which are up to 10 times more ex-pensive, is gaining so much popularity that sales of soft drinks have increased dramatically in many villages. Farmers say the use of pesticides can cost them about 70 rupees ($1.50) an acre. By comparison, if they mix up a bottle of cola with water and spray it on their crops it costs as much as 60 rupees less per acre.

With these savings the farmers are noticing a significant change in earnings and at the same time are noticing the lack of pesticide use is keep-ing their soil rich.

Agricultural specialist Devendra Sharma told BBC reporter Alok Prakash Putul that some farmers actually believe that the drinks are the same as pesticides, but he explained their ef-fectiveness more likely lies in the sugar syrups, which attract ants which in turn feed on the larva of destructive insects.

Whatever the scientific explanation might be, Nathan Harpur knows that sugar water has helped him produce good crops in challenging circumstances, and he will certainly be continu-ing the practice next season and beyond.

Tuesday, such as the 3.5 hectare blaze five kilometres west of the North Fork area north of Grand Forks A four-person crew equipped with a small air tanker is current-ly in attendance though the fire is not yet contained. There was also a small spot fire reported around Horn Creek near Green-wood.

The current fire danger rating for the Boundary is high, particularly for the Mid-way-Rock Creek corridor, which is expect-ed to experience a warming trend, with the risk of lightening strikes continuing.

I was a little shocked when I saw photographs of the af-termath of the Pemberton Music Festival, held last week-end in one of B.C.’s more pristine locations. Garbage, plas-tic bottles, abandoned chairs and coolers littered the site, as the more than 100,000 attendees left organizers with a major clean up headache. The generation that claims to champion conservation, despise polluters and which regu-larly voices its opposition to industry appears to have truly dropped the ball here.

Surely, a few hundred of the partygoers could have rallied together to raze the site of the crowd’s debris, and, in doing so, make older generations look more fondly upon their suc-cessors? Instead, they left Pemberton look-ing eerily similar to that “other” music festival that was one of the first such gatherings to take place, 1969’s Woodstock, which brought to-gether most of the day’s prominent artists for a muddy, three-day orgy of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

Looking at photographs of that festival’s rural New York site, and comparing them to those taken at Pember-ton, makes for much disappointment, as the realization sets in that we have apparently have not progressed much these past 45 years.

Where was the much heralded “pack it in, pack it out” mentality that we now take with us on our beloved hik-ing adventures? How could 100,000 people walk through a mountain of garbage and do nothing? Is it that “mob psyche” at work, making otherwise decent people collec-tively ignore the mess they have left behind? I have heard the campsite was not that well organized, and lacked suffi-cient refuse containers, but surely that is no excuse to leave such a beautiful part of the province looking more like a landfill.

Hopefully, the photographs of next year’s festival will prove much more uplifting.

~~~
I find it fascinating, yet also a bit unnerving, to watch billionaire Donald Trump steamroll his way across the U.S. in his quest to secure the GOP nomination in next year’s presidential election.
He has effortlessly attracted the most press coverage of any of the other 15 candidates, which may indeed have fostered his ten-percentage point lead in the race.
His brash statement about John McCain (“He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured”), however, was largely met with disdain amongst Americans voters and may see his popularity dip.
Still, it remains a real possibility that, come this time next year, we will see “The Donald,” he of the mysterious hairstyle, successful tele-vision personality, and owner of Vancouver’s second-tallest structure, getting uncomfort-
ably close to assuming one of the most powerful positions on the planet. It should be an interesting campaign, and let’s hope Hillary Clinton makes it even more so!
~~~The summer has hit its stride, and with it comes all of

those wonderful traditions that we look forward to each year.

One of my favourites is watching my wife and her mom spend days-on-end slicing, dicing and boiling fruits and vegetables as canning takes over the kitchen. Watching the transformation of fruit-laden boxes into rows of glass jars packed full with tasty beets and peaches is truly a sight to behold.

My taste buds are already focused on the fall, when at last I’ll be able, somewhat smugly, to pop a jar of super-sweet nectarines, while most have to make do with bland imported fruit.

No surprise that the art of canning is back, big time!

No excuse for garbage

Provincial and federal scientists have released the results of their latest research into the environmental impact of fracking, the injection of high-pressured flu-ids into wells to open difficult oil and gas deposits, and their findings could potentially prove disastrous.

It has been determined that fracking has caused more than a thousand earthquakes in north eastern B.C. since 2006, and changed the region’s seismicity. The earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 1.0 to 4.3, included six events higher than 4.0 and more than 20 events that  shook  buildings and moved furniture in places like Fort St. John. Several quakes caused cas-ing damage to horizontal wells. Moreover, industry-caused tremors remain an ongoing geological revolu-tion for the region.

Earthquakes with a magnitude of about 2.0 or less are called micro quakes and can’t be felt at the sur-face. Events above 3.0 can be felt on the ground, and tremors just larger than 4.0 can cause minor damage. A great earthquake, capable of extensive damage, typi-cally measures a magnitude of 8.0.

Scientists originally thought that fracking wouldn’t trigger anything stronger than micro quakes. But now that the process has caused quakes as powerful as mag-nitude 4.4 in Alberta, scientists are grappling to deter-mine what kind of hazard industrial tremors might pose to pipelines, dams and other infrastructure. In Upper Halfway, a community northeast of Fort St. John, residents have described the tremors as a series of crashes and bangs comparable to someone driving “a truck into the side of the house.” The injection of highly pressurized water mixtures into a well creates a network of cracks that can also connect to fault zones. The reactivation of these faults can then trigger an earthquake, scientists say.

Due to limited monitoring, industry and government lack a full understanding of how the wave of quakes is changing the flow of groundwater in the region or the migration of gases such as methane, radon and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere throughout northeast B.C. Earthquakes triggered by the shale gas industry in B.C. have not injured anybody or damaged public property to date. But industry-made tremors in the U.S. Mid-west have caused  damage in Oklahoma and created new insurance liabilities.

It seems naïve to believe that B.C. will escape a simi-lar fate.

Letters to the editorThanks to city foreman, crew

On behalf of myself and the rest of the members of the Greenwood seniors, I would like to thank the city foreman

and his crew for their help in preventing any more flood-ing of the Greenwood senior’s building.

Whenever I asked to meet with Randy Smith, he always responded in the most positive

way and came up with a plan we both hope will stop any more flooding to the building.

Once again thank you all. Leslie Goddard

RCMP seize pot plants

Many communities in the Kootenay Bound-ary now have enhanced Internet services.

This from the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, which announced in a press release last week how pleased it is to be part of the ef-forts to bring that enhanced service to Boundary communities.

Working with the Regional Districts of East Kootenay and Central Kootenay as well as with the Columbia Basin Trust and Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation has resulted in Inter-net improvements and/or expansions in parts of Electoral Areas A, B/Lower Columbia-Old Glory, C/Christina Lake, D/Rural Grand Forks and E/West Boundary, the release said.

“We cannot give enough thanks to the efforts of our local government friends and partners in East and Central Kootenay, nor to the Columbia Basin Trust,” said Chair Grace McGregor, RDKB board chair and director for Area C/Christina Lake.

“Their long-term commitment to improving Internet access to rural residents has resulted in an innovative and productive partnership be-tween the CBT, local government, local societies and private industry to improve Internet service to rural residents. This partnership has brought the federal government to the table with essential funding for these projects.”

Added Area A Director Ali Grieve, “High speed is something we all expect today, with

much of rural Canada still left out. This is a very significant improvement not only for some of our rural neighbours, but for existing or potential new business as well. Rural business gets a more level playing field to research and expand their markets.”

“Improving Internet service and availability makes our communities more livable and sus-tainable,” said Director Linda Worley, Area B/Lower Columbia-Old Glory.

“A key benefit to improving internet capabili-ties is the ability for our rural residents to access and benefit from learning opportunities in the expanding world of on-line education,” said Di-rector Roly Russell, Area D/Rural Grand Forks.

“Living in rural British Columbia has many benefits that are sometimes overshadowed by challenges. In an age where good, reliable high speed Internet access is essential for a com-munity to be sustainable and grow, this project brings hope and potential to our rural residents,” said Director Vicki Gee, Electoral Area E/West Boundary.

This project, which will see the improvement and enhancement of existing services as well as expansion into new service areas has been a long term one, which has had many individuals con-tributing.

“A special mention must be made of former RDKB chair Larry Gray whose commitment to the issue of rural Internet access and efforts while in office and afterwards helped ensure this suc-cessful ending,” McGregor said.

On July 15, Midway RMCP re-ceived a report that a red/black Genesis mountain bike was sto-len from the fire hall in Green-wood. The owner was at fire prac-tice when the bike was stolen. The following day, RCMP members acted on a tip that the stolen bicycle could be at an address in Greenwood. Police attended the residence to

speak with the property owner but no one was home.

A bike was located in the backyard but was determined not to be the one stolen the previous day. While in the backyard, members observed, in

plain view, 15 miniature clone marijuana plants.The plants were seized and a note was left for

the property owner for follow up.

The Kettle River Family Fun Day saw dozens of kids and parents descend on Riverfront Park in Midway last Saturday. The all-day event featured bike deco-rating, a bicycle rodeo, various games and lots of water slide fun courtesy of the Midway Fire Department. ety held its annual barbecue and silent auction last Saturday, as the society commemorated the 2003 fire that burned 1,200 acres and destroyed three homes.

The fire was the impetus for the creation of the Anarchist Mountain Fire Department, which was originally created by residents as a not-for-profit society, with donations of land, a tanker truck, and two fire trucks from the original land developer, Regal Ridge.

Eventually the AMFD was assumed as an official Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen fire department, and it

continues as a municipal service. The department hosted a summer BBQ from about 2005

until 2010, at which point the community society volunteered to co-host the event. Since then it has been a joint effort.

In 2014, a silent auction became part of the event, raising over $6,000 in support of the fire department. At press time,

this year’s tally was not available, though society presi-dent Mark McKenney said it “should be even better than last year’s.”

Ninety-five people were in attendance on Saturday evening, and the society expects that number to grow each year.

The society has about 80 families as members and hosts lectures, has engaged in tree plant-ing projects, was the first B.C. community certified as FireSmart and has developed an emergency notification system to contact resi-dents in case of evacu-ations and hazards.

Arnarchist society hostsbarbecue

Anarchist Mountain Community Society president Mark McKenney, left, plucked the evening away with fellow members of The Light-bulbs, Denise and Jamie Soule and Sue McEvoy.

Many impressive items were up for silent auction throughout evening.

The Kettle River Memo-rial Run was inspired by former Midway resident John Boltz, who lost his battle with bone cancer in May 2009. This year’s event attracted about sixty runners who chose from 5, 10 and 18km routes. Competitors endured gruelling heat throughout the morning, but were well-supported by numerous water stations along the way. Organizer Nicole Ferrier has yet to tally the money raised, but expects it to be a tidy contribution to the Midway Public Library.
