A little slime for a big cause

Habitat for Humanity has announced the recipients of the new home construction in Westbridge that will replace a residence destroyed by the re-cent wildfire.

Bob Huff, executive direc-tor of HFH Southeast BC (HF-HSBC) proclaimed Dale and J.D. Winn and their four chil-dren as the family the organiza-tion will be helping get back on their feet after losing everything to the fire. Huff visited the fam-ily last Friday to check in on the construction effort, which has already produced a goat shel-ter, built by the numerous vol-unteers and donors who have reached out to the Winns with their expertise and construction materials.

Habitat for Humanity is re-nowned for its volunteer re-sponse across Canada and vol-unteers’ willingness to make a difference in their own commu-nities. Joining HFHSEBC in re-building the Winn family home will be another organization renowned for their volunteer response. Mennonite Disaster Services has pledged their sup-port to partner with HFHSEBC and the Rock Creek Westbridge Fire Needs Committee in the construction of the Winn’s new residence.

“Every day for the past two months, people from the

Boundary region have been volunteering and responding to the needs of the people devas-tated by the fires,” Huff said. ”In some ways, you could say that disasters bring out the best in people.”

Huff views HFHSEBC’s part-nership with Mennonite Disas-ter Services and the Rock Creek Westbridge Fire Needs Commit-tee as more than the rebuilding of destroyed homes. “It’s about building hope,” he said.

At a ceremony held in Rock Creek on Oct 23, the managers of Buy-Low Foods in Osoyoos, Oliver and Grand Forks, along with AG Foods in Osoyoos pre-sented a cheque to HFHSEBC for $17,100 to assist with the wildfire recovery efforts. The four stores accepted donations from customers who gave gen-erously at the checkouts at all-four locations.

Sam Corea, the director of retail operations for the grocery chain praised the stores custom-ers for their response.

“While the people of Rock Creek and Oliver have begun the long journey to rebuild after the recent fires,” Corea said, “it is uplifting to see the generous contributions made to this cam-paign.”

The Fun Spot

Quote of the Week:What others think of us would be of little moment did it not, when known, so deeply tinge what we think of ourselves.– Paul Valery (1871 - 1945)

Joke of the Week:I was in a job interview today when the manager handed me his laptop and said, “I want you to try and

sell this to me.” So I put it under my arm, walked out of the building and went home. Eventually he called my mobile and said, “Bring it back here right now!” I said, “$100 and it’s yours.”

Meanwhile, more than 400 kilometres away in Vancouver, the organizers of the Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival, which was cancelled this year due to the Rock Creek fire, have announced a benefit concert on Nov. 14, through which they hope to raise $10,000 to contribute to the con-struction of the Winns’ home.

Ponderosa principles Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi have pulled together an impressive line-up of musical acts for the event, which will be held at the Imperial in Vancouver.

The event will be a more intimate spin on the Ponderosa Festival, with two stages, a silent auc-tion, a merchants’ table, and six live acts through-out the night.

Letters Policy

The international response to Justin Trudeau’s election as the nation’s prime minister has been nothing more than hilarious and, to some, a little silly.

Media statements such as this from an Australian news agency dominated the newswire shortly after Trudeau swept Stephen Harper from office a little more than a week ago: “The votes are in and Canada has come out of its election with a super hot new leader.”

Somehow I doubt that happened when Mr. Harper wrestled the nation’s highest political office out of the arms of Paul Martin and the Liberals in 2006, though perhaps Stephen is now wishing he had accepted last year’s offer of a “makeover” from Lululemon.

There were immediate comparisons between the prime minister-elect to John Kennedy and Trudeau’s late father Pierre, who was also likened to the fabled U.S. president, killed by a sniper in 1963.

His victory was not only acclaimed by the elder Trudeau’s left-leaning supporters, but also by thousands of swooning women around the world, who took to social media to anoint the “tall, dark and handsome” prime min-ister the “sexiest leader in the world.”

There were, of course, more substantial international reactions to Trudeau’s victory. Websites based in Israel and the Ukraine lamented Harper’s defeat, viewing it as the loss of a strong friend. On the other side, the climate-control crowd applauded the election results, confident that Trudeau would strengthen Canada’s position on greenhouse gas emissions.

Russian state media appeared to find particular plea-sure in the defeat of Mr. Harper, who had become one of President Vladimir Putin’s loudest international critics.

Tweeted Libyan activist Hend Amry, known for her commentary on the Middle East: “I hate to say it, but I think Canada’s new prime minister is really giving Putin

a run for his money in the ‘topless photos on the Internet’ department.”

Her tongue-in-cheek comment triggered a fresh ex-change of photos of Canada’s “hunky” new leader. Less

than an hour later—after the online magazine Slate published “a guide to Justin Trudeau’s hairstyles and emotions” (declaring that Mr. Trudeau’s “piercing stare won a decisive vic-tory over every single other thing in Canada”) – Hend experienced something like remorse.

“Um, this isn’t the kind of gender equality in the media we meant,” she suggested.

Slate and other media also took the oppor-tunity to retell tales of the fabled dating life of Mr. Trudeau’s father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau,

while he was prime minister for most of 1968 to 1984. The “dashing” Trudeau dated numerous women during his po-litical career, including Barbra Streisand, Kim Catrall and Margot Kidder, eventually settling on North Vancouver’s Margaret Sinclair as his first lady. They divorced in 1984. As a somewhat cryptic sidebar to Justin Trudeau’s elec-tion victory, former U.S. president Richard Nixon eerily predicted it in 1972, when Trudeau was only four years old. During a state visit to Canada in April of that year, Nixon made an uncanny statement: “Tonight we’ll dis-pense with the formalities. I’d like to toast the future prime minister of Canada: to Justin Pierre Trudeau.” Who knows, maybe Tricky Dicky saw something no one else did; maybe he detected a sparkle in the four-year-old’s eyes that was destined to make women swoon, just as they did for his father during his lengthy tenure.

Let’s hope the titillation surrounding our new prime minister quickly dissipates, however, because Mr. Trudeau will invariably pack on the pounds and begin to experi-ence hair loss as he tackles the stressful life of a national leader.

And how would we feel then, eh?

Canada gets sexy

As the federal election campaign signs slowly make their way into storage, some likely never to re-emerge, Canadians are now able to return to a normal routine with an opportunity to reflect upon the events of Oct. 19.

With Stephen Harper’s Conservatives’ resounding defeat at the hands of the upstart Liberals, coupled with Harper’s resignation as party leader, much of the nation hopes to see an immediate change to both the domestic and international face of Canada.

If the Liberals are to live up to their campaign promis-es, the new prime minister has a lot of work ahead of him. Trudeau has promised to change Canada’s tax regime with increases for the highest earners and tax cuts for middle-income Canadians within his first 100 days in office. He also said he would reverse the Conservative government’s doubling of tax free savings account lim-its and the income splitting it introduced for families with young children.

One of Trudeau’s most ambitious and expensive promises was that of a new Canada Child Benefit that would replace all existing benefits with one that is based on a family’s income. The new system would see families with children under the age of 18 and earning less than $200,000 getting more money, but those earn-ing above that amount not receiving a benefit at all.

Internationally, Trudeau has promised to end Can-ada’s combat troop presence in Iraq and Syria, instead sticking to training Iraqi troops. He has, in fact, deliv-ered on part of that promise by informing U.S. Presi-dent Obama that Canada intends to stop helping the Americans bomb ISIS-held territory in Iraq and Syria. However, accusations of human rights abuses have been levelled at Iraqi troops, adding a tricky second layer to the prospect of training more homegrown soldiers.

Trudeau has also made promises around Bill C-51 reform, marijuana legalization, election reform, health care and access to information, to name a few. The list of promises is a lengthy one, to be sure, which will make Justin Trudeau’s first year in office a particu-larly busy, but, potentially, a very effective one.

Will Trudeau keep his promises?

Letters to the editor Perhaps Goch could ask council

In response to Byron Goch’s letter to the editor published in the Oct. 22 issue of the Bound-ary Creek Times, in which he asked why the same people are

still on the Greenwood recre-ation commission, perhaps, in-stead, he should be asking why council has not appointed any of the nine individuals whose names I put forward six weeks ago as possible new members.

I do not live in Greenwood city, so I cannot and do not

vote for or against council, though I will be at the next meeting of council and if they have not or do not appoint all or some of them I will ask again why not, or, perhaps, Mr. Goch should be asking that question himself.

Leslie Goddard, Greenwood

Editor, The Times:

Great start to schoolSuperintendent feels excitement

School Superintendent Kev-in Argue spoke of his excite-ment over the commencement of the school year, particularly in light of last year’s teachers’ strike, and described the high level of energy he and Director of Learning Doug Lacey felt in all of the buildings they visited during the first weeks of school.

Argue highlighted his recent visit to Boundary Central Sec-ondary School, where he was impressed with the full and varied itinerary scheduled that day.

The morning saw students and staff competing in an inau-gural Terry Fox Run, which was followed by a staff-prepared turkey lunch, an all-candidates forum and capped off by a teachers’ non-instructional duty session.

Argue noted B.C. Teach-ers’ Federation representative Norm Sabourin’s impassioned speech about Terry Fox that got participants motivated to com-plete the run/walk and donate to the Terry Fox foundation.SD51 hosts BCSSA

SD51 hosted a B.C. School Superintendents Association conference at Christina Lake in early October, which brought superintendents from across

the province together for a two-day symposium and sev-eral meetings. Superintendent Argue noted how pleased del-egates were to be visiting the wBoundary, impressed by its beauty and ambiance.New hirings

Twelve new teachers have been hired in the district, along with 34 support workers, which the superintendent is also very pleased about.

A report on class size re-vealed that the average num-ber of students per class has remained steady in comparison to the previous school year and that overall enrolment was also holding its own. Kindergarten registration, however, was up over last September.Meetings with Apple Corporation

In addition, Argue spoke briefly about last spring’s meet-ings between Apple Corpora-tion and SD51 representatives, describing them as the early stages of establishing a digital learning system within schools. Staff and teachers attended a one-day Apple training ses-sion to better-prepare them for designing a mission and vision

statement for digital learning in the district, which will see professional development for teachers as the effort’s first ma-jor step.

The board also updated the district’s proposed implemen-tation of Microsoft’s Office 365 and its One Drive storage ser-vice, which allows students the ability to store their own infor-mation on a secure server. One Drive allows for storage and ac-cess of data on any type of digi-tal device, which would be par-ticularly beneficial to students sharing iPads.

It was noted, however, that parental support for the One Drives account was not univer-sal, so alternative data storage methods were being explored for those preferring not to ac-cess the One Drive option.

The next SD51 board meet-ing will be on Nov. 10 at the dis-trict office in Grand Forks.

Stolen vehicle locatedStolen vehicle stashed

On Oct. 13, Midway RCMP attended an aban-doned vehicle on Smoker Road in Carmi. Accord-ing to Constable James Charles, the vehicle was parked in the bushes in such a manner that suggested the person who stole it was going to re-turn. The vehicle, a Ford F-450, had been reported stolen from Kelowna. If anyone has any information related to this theft of vehicle they are to contact the Mid-way RCMP with their information.Deer on highway

On Oct. 14, police responded to a re-port of a large herd of deer on the high-

way west of Midway by Stewart Bros. Nursery. The deer were confused and scared by the traffic and unable to exit the highway due to the high roadside

fencing in that area. A Midway RCMP member attended

the scene and activated police emergen-cy lights to slow down traffic and allow the deer to walk west to safety. Deer shot on private land

On Oct. 16, Midway RCMP and the Conservation office responded to a complaint of a deer being shot on private property. Thanks to the assistance of a local hunting guide, RCMP and Con-servation were able to apprehend the

individuals who shot the animal, which turned out to be a three-point Mule deer, the hunting of which is also illegal.  Con-servation seized items from the hunters and issued several violation tickets.Mental health crisis

On Oct. 18, police responded to a suicidal male who called the crisis line seeking help. The man was transported to Boundary Hospital to speak with a doctor.  The RCMP would like to com-mend the man for seeking assistance with his mental health issues and hopes anyone who reads this will take note that there are always people who care and who want to help.

The 24-hour crisis line is 1-800-784-2433.

POLICEBRIEFS

Project-based learning implemented

Effectively captivating all students is the goal of project-based learning; that was the focus of an elementary school

delegation at last week’s School District 51 board meeting.

West Boundary Elementary School vice-principal Anna Lautard began the presentation by stressing the importance of schools being inclusive of all students,

regardless of their learning ability.

“It’s really important for us to meet all students’ needs, but during our inquiry process last spring we discovered we were not engaging all of the students equally,” Lautard said. “One of the new initiatives in educa-tion is project-based learning, which was already being used in the district to effectively cap-tivate all students, regardless of learning ability, so we decided to begin implementation of that initiative in all four West Boundary elementary schools.”

Faculty member Sarah Bond has been working with stu-dents and teachers since last year, coaching the principles of “self-regulated learning,” an in-tegrated learning process con-sisting of the development of a set of constructive behaviours that aims to positively affect a

student’s learning. These processes are planned and adapted to support the pur-suit of personal goals in changing learn-ing environments.

With the pending introduction of a new B.C.-wide school curriculum, this initiative takes on added importance and relevance, as 2016 will see teachers af-forded greater flexibility in their content delivery and assessment. Students learn-ing will be more closely matched with their individual strengths and needs as they develop the three core competen-cies as identified by the B.C. Ministry of Education: communication, thinking, and personal and social competency.

Within their school growth plan, Lautard and Bond have worked in con-cert to encourage teachers to use proj-ect-based learning in their classrooms. Through Bond’s coaching, which began last year, teachers can discover how to better connect with students and more precisely identify their needs.

“The concept of self-regulated learn-ing helps kids connect not only with themselves, but with their communities and universally,” Bond said.

The inquiry period for staff and stu-dents is under way, as schools embark on a journey of understanding and im-plementation of self-regulated learning.

Tiit (Dan) TuttiTUTTI, Tiit (Dan) passed away in the Trail Hospital

on October 15, 2015 after a short illness. Tiit was born in Parnu, Estonia and arrived in

Canada with his parents and brother Tonis (who passed away in August of 2015) in 1949.

He is survived by his wife Nola and children Nicola (Faizal) and Graham.

Tiit became a lawyer and practiced law in both Trail and Vancouver. He ceased practicing law in 1990 and he and his wife went sailing in the Caribbean for the next ten years. They returned to Vancouver and Nola resumed her career. In 2010 they left the big city for the smallest city in Canada, Greenwood, where he lived until his death.

At Tiit’s request, there will not be a funeral.

Seniors’ group to host AGMThe current term of the Greenwood

Senior’s executive expires on Dec. 31 of this year, and a new board will be elect-ed at the group’s annual general meeting starting at 2 p.m on Nov. 2. A list of all positions was posted at the organiza-tion’s last meeting on Oct. 5.

Current president Leslie Goddard is asking all of those interested in running for the board to add their names to the list, indicating which position they are interested in assuming.

Goddard has voiced his concern that nobody will run for the executive, in which case the organization would sim-ply not be able to function.

“If nobody will stand for the ex-ecutive then from what I have found out we will have to close the doors and shut down,” Goddard said. “I for one will not run against any one for president and my wife will not run against any one for thrift shop coordina-tor. As for the last two members of the

executive who resigned claiming they cannot work with the current executive, I encourage them to come and put their names forward and take over the board.”

Goddard said he was frustrated by the reluctance of many of the club’s members to help out, noting that if all the members worked one day, they would be working only a single day each month. Elections will begin immediate-ly upon the conclusion of the AGM at approximately 2:30 p.m.

“Imagine a river of dreams. A river which embodies the spiritual essence of every river human beings have encoun-tered over thousands of years.

“True, every river radiates a distinct individual personality, yet they also share a common magic, an incredible ability to act as Muse for the works of countless artists. Musicians, painters, dancers and writers have created the most amazing works through the direct influence of rivers upon them.”

So says John Hibberson, the director of Midway...and Beyond Little Theatre talking about his latest project, River of Dreams scheduled for performance Nov. 4 in the Midway Community Hall.

“We happen to live in a very special locality, the West Boundary.

“Writer Norman Maclean states in his famous novel, ‘Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.’ Nothing is closer to the truth when we think of our own river, the Kettle.

“It has faithfully nourished our land’s First Peoples, settlers, and present in-habitants throughout our history here together. Basically, it is why we have been able to live here and why we can continue to do so.”

But it is more than a source of water,

a biological necessity of all life, Hibber-son added. For so many people living on or near the Kettle the river, it has also nourished their mental well being, their spiritual health.

“The Kettle throughout the passage of a year is stunningly beautiful. When the weight of being a human bears heavy upon one, its waters also refresh the soul.”

River of Dreams is a celebration of both the Kettle in particular and rivers in general. Involving five young people from the area and dancer’s from the highly respected Allegro Dance Company of Nelson, this origi-nal work intends to take you on a highly visual journey of spo-ken word and dance.

The majority of the script comes from the writings of one man, Michael Delp, a poet and passionate fly fisherman. According to Hibberson, the combination of writer and fisherman has given Delp a remarkable insight into the secret life of rivers. His ability “to read the river” reminds him of B.C.’s own famous natural-ist and writer, Roderick Haig-Brown.

The production consists of three shows. The first is as the featured enter-tainment at this year’s annual Kootenay Lake Water Conference on Oct. 24 in Nelson. The second will be held in the fa-mous Capitol Theatre of Nelson on Nov. 3. The show will then wind up here in Midway on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available for $10 at The Spot in Midway, can be reserved at 250-449-2345, or bought at the door on the night.

Something a little different; some-thing worth dreaming about.

I’ve lived in the beautiful West Boundary for 26 years and have done many jobs from driving logging & freight trucks, ranching, saddle and boot making to purchasing a building in Greenwood and opening up a western shop. As I had a lifelong interest in real estate, I decided to get my license. I enjoy working with a variety of people and there is no greater satisfaction than seeing a happy buyer or seller!

As well as holding an electrical con-tractors license I also hold tickets for fi re alarm installations, inspections and certifi cations. I run a small crew of two and myself.
