On Dec. 16, Midway RCMP responded to a report of a theft from a rural property outside of Midway. Thieves made off with a Triton cargo trailer, 5 Metres in length and white in colour. The trailer is valued at between $10000- $15000. If anyone has information related to this theft, please contact the Mid-way RCMP.

On Dec. 18, RCMP recov-ered a stolen 2009 Ford F350 pickup truck from a Beaverdell property. The vehicle had been stolen from a parking lot in Kelowna the day before. An investigation is ongoing, with hopes of forensic evidence to link suspects to this recovered vehicle. If anyone has any infor-mation related this occurrence, they are asked to contact the Midway RCMP.

On Dec. 18, Midway RCMP investigated a break and enter to a rural property in West-bridge, where suspects entered

a rural home and made off with wrapped Christmas presents. Suspects located a hidden key to the property and gained en-try. The estimated value of the stolen gifts taken is $2500. Keys to vehicles on the property were also taken. If anyone observed any suspicious vehicles or peo-ple in the area they are asked to contact the Midway RCMP with their informa-tion.

M i d w a y RCMP would like to remind B o u n d a r y residents to be mindful of suspicious ve-hicles in their

neighbourhoods. Residents are asked to record the license plate number or a description of any vehicle that doesn’t appear to belong in the area. Residents are encouraged to call 911 im-mediately to report such ve-hicles.

Midway RCMP and staff would like to take this oppor-tunity to wish all Boundary Region residences a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year and remind every-body not to drink and drive.

Carolling KettlesBoundary choir The Singing Kettles delivered another well-received program on Friday, despite missing several members due to a highway closure that prevented Peri Best and others from reach-ing Kettle Valley. As is usually the case, the St.Mary’s Church was filled to capacity for the presenta-tion, and left principle Vivien Browne grateful for the community’s continued support.

Letters Policy

I realize it’s more than nine months until the next Rock Creek Fall Fair, but because the wheels of change often turn slowly I feel the time is right to make a sugges-tion for a brand new event in next September’s country extravaganza. I must preface everything I’m about to recommend by saying this was not my idea (one of my fellow curlers actually suggested it), nor is it an original concept, so that if I offend anybody’s sensibilities with this idea, I am not responsible!

This is the proposal for the new event; it would be called “Partner Packing” and, as the name vaguely suggests, it entails schlep-ping your better half through an obstacle course en route to a well-earned finish line 300 metres away.

Based on a Scandinavian tradition known simply as “wife carrying”, this version would be slightly less sexist (women would be encouraged to be either the carrier or the carried), though no less hilarious, with onlookers treated to an unusual spectacle of teams hoofing their way through water and mud, leaping over hurdles and, perhaps, occasionally tumbling headfirst to the arena floor. As for prizes, I believe the winners of the race should be well-compensated; I’d like to see twenty busi-nesses step up and donate a hundred bucks each, provid-ing the winners of the race with a cool grand and second and third place teams with $600 and $400 respectively

So that’s it; partner and partner, joined in a rip roaring competition which would test not only their physical resolve, but also the strength of their relationship. I en-vision teams starting to train for the event in the spring, as partners encourage one another to skip dessert for

a couple of months and up their daily walking mileage in preparation for Partner Packing 2016. Let’s face it, it would inevitably bring couples closer together, both literally and figuratively, while giving fair goers cause for bellyaching laughter and their eyes on their own loved ones as partners in packing as well as in life.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Twas the night before Christmas, and all
through the TimesNot a reporter was stirring, at Santa’s behest. The stockings were hung by the beer steins
with care In hopes that St. Stella soon would be there. The sales staff were nestled all snug in their
beds, While visions of bonuses danced in their
heads. And Dar in her ‘kerchief and I in my cap
Had just switched our brains off for a long winter’s nap. When out on South Copper there arose such a clatter.
I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter. Away to the window I crawled like a snail,
Tore open the curtains and threw up on the mail. The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my bleary eyes should appear,
But a broken down sleigh and eight tired reindeer. With a chubby old driver, so sleepy and gruff,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Buff. And when he awoke, he looked out on the town, And wished all a good Xmas, with nary a frown.
Merry Christmas everybody.
Twas the night before Christmas
The debate over the steady decline in the use of the salutation “Merry Christmas”, replaced largely by “Happy Holidays”, has led many to conclude that the latter greeting is simply, politically-correct and inclusive, making it considerably more appropriate in this increasingly diverse society. Others, however, view this growing trend of drop-ping “Merry Christmas” from our Yuletide vocabulary not so much a result of political correctness, but more so another reflection of the rampant Capitalism that drives much of the population into a shopping frenzy every December.
Could it be that retailers, concerned about the financial consequences of offending potential customers by wishing them happiness during a Christian festival, were devious enough to drop the Christmas reference from their adver-tising in lieu of the non-denominational “Happy Holi-days?” Was it their intent to pull non-Christian shoppers into the commercial vortex that the season has become? The concept is devilish, to be sure, but regardless of its root, it appears to have worked, with increasing numbers of non-Christians, including Muslims, buying into the Christmas season and the traditions it embraces.
It is accurate to say that years ago, many smart retailers decided that Christmas was something to be exploited for commercial gain in as many ways as possible, as they coolly set out to exploit the celebration through Christmas products, Christmas decorations, Christmas sales, and Christmas advertising, not to mention Christmas music in stores starting in late November. And, outside of retail, many businesses, of all types, decided that sending Christ-mas cards to their long lists of customers would ultimately be good for business.
It would surely be bad for business, however, if non-Christian customers felt excluded from the party, leading many commercial interests to make a small effort to be inclusive and keep everybody happy and willing to spend.
Thus “Merry Christmas” became “Happy Holidays.”
It’s just an effort to be a little more inclusive. It’s not personal. It’s not political. It’s just business.
Oh well, Merry Holidays West Boundary!
Post-fire review: not all needs met
On August 13, 2015, a wildfire raced through the Rock Creek/Westbridge area destroying trees, crops, houses, outbuildings, tools, firewood and other things. The major damage to residents was in the Westbridge area. A number of volun-teer organizations working together assisted lo-cal residents dealing with this emergency. Not all needs have yet been met. Some of the highlights of meeting immediate needs as a result of this di-saster over the last four to five months were:Clean-up of Burnt Houses and Outbuildings
Immediately after the fire, Samaritan’s Purse volunteers cleaned up a number of burnt houses and outbuildings by piling the metal into one pile and the other burnt rubble into a second pile. These volunteers also sifted through the debris to retrieve possessions such as jewelry, porcelain, etc. This was very therapeutic and meant a lot to the people affected by the fire.
With the assistance of the Regional Director, the Unmet Needs Committee (initially organized by Vicki Gee – Director, Area ‘E’ under the guid-ance of the Canadian Red Cross), the Canadian Red Cross and ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Association) Canada, arrangements were made to have the metal and burnt rubble removed from the burnt houses and outbuildings at no cost to owners that either had no fire insur-ance or were under insured. As of the beginning of December, that work has basically been com-pleted. Thanks go to the Regional District for opening the Greenwood landfill site some addi-
tional days to accept delivery of burnt rubble and the waving of the drop fees when receiving the burnt rubble from these burnt houses and out-buildings. Also thanks go to the local contractors that collected all this burnt scrap metal.Firewood
In September, with the assistance of the Un-met Needs Committee, the Canadian Red Cross, logging truck drivers and contractors, volunteers and the Westbridge Recreation Society; firewood logs were delivered to the Westbridge Commu-nity Hall, cut and delivered to those identified needing firewood. About 35 volunteers helped cut and delivered this firewood. The Westbridge Recreation Society provided space for delivering logs as well as lunches for the volunteers that cut and delivered the firewood.Burnt Tools and Tires
Through the efforts of the Unmet Needs Com-mittee, a number of families who had their tools and/or car tires burnt had some of these items replaced. There is still a need of other common every day tools.Replacing Outbuildings
During October and November as a result of the work and resources of the Unmet Needs Committee, donors of building supplies, the Kettle River Lions, the Canadian Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, the Mennonite Disaster Services, the Westbridge Women’s Institute, the Westbridge Recreation Society and scores of vol-unteers; many outbuildings destroyed by the fire were replaced.
Did you know?Leaving cookies and milk for Santa Claus is a Christmas Eve tradition. Children regularly place a dish of cookies and a glass of milk by the tree on Christmas Eve so that Santa has enough en-ergy to complete all of his gift-giving before kids wake up on Christmas morning. The tradition of leaving cookies out on Christmas Eve may trace its origins to Saint Nicholas. On the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, children would leave food and drink for the saint and any attendants.
The treats would be exchanged for gifts. While that’s one theory behind the tradition, others think it is linked to the history of the Christmas tree and the edible decorations that adorn it. Santa would snack on the ornaments. Even after edible decorations gave way to inedible orna-ments, the tradition of leaving a snack for Santa remained. Whatever the origins behind the tradi-tion, millions of children dutifully leave milk and cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.
Exploring the colours of Christmas
From all of us to all of you, may your Christmas be the merriest and the New Year bring you joy & prosperity.
Mid-Boundary Contracting
Midway. BC
The colors red, green, gold, and silver are prominent during the holiday season, when they can be seen on everything from gift wrap to decorations.
Decorations adorning homes and business-es in the familiar colors of red and green are popular come the holiday season. Even gift wrap, greeting cards and clothing tend to lean toward red and green as the holiday season hits full swing. It is difficult to think of Christ-mas without envisioning everything awash in these popular colors, broken up only by the inclusion of gold, white or silver accents.
The colors of Christmas are often taken for granted, and many celebrants are unaware of how these colors became symbols of the holiday season and why they remain so to this day.
Several theories exist as to why red and green became the hallmarks of Christmas. One such theory is that the colors evolved from pagan celebrations similar to the evolu-tion of Christmas traditions. Prior to the arrival of Christianity, many cultures viewed the color green as the symbol of life . It is believed that, during harsh winters, evergreen trees were cut down and brought indoors to symbolize that life still exists and thrives despite the cold and darkness of winter. Other pagan holidays featured the use of green, red and gold, including the festival of Yule.
As Christianity spread across Europe and eventually other parts of the world, red and green were linked to Jesus Christ. Green still represented life, but now this was the eternal life offered by Christ. Red was said to symbolize sacrifice, namely the blood of Jesus when he died on the cross. Some Christians believe that Jesus wore a crown of holly thorns whose berries were originally white. As Jesus’ blood touched the ber-ries, they turned red.
Some theorize that the red of the holiday sea-son represents the apples on the tree of paradise in the Garden of Eden. Around the 14th cen-
tury, the faithful would put on Paradise Plays on December 24 to share the story of creation with those who could not read. It is nearly impossible to find a fruit-bearing apple tree in the winter, so a pine tree adorned with red apples was used in-stead. Bishops also wore red robes, further tying the color red to religious masses and celebrations.
Gold is frequently used in holiday decorations as well. Gold can represent the sun and light, both important ways to ward off the dark winter. In addition, gold was one of the gifts brought to baby Jesus, making it a color of significance within the Christian faith.
Red and green poinsettias also are a symbol of the holiday season, but they didn’t start the color-ful tradition. Poinsettias are a relatively recent ad-dition to Christmas symbolism, as they were only first introduced to America in 1828, when they were brought back from Mexico by Joel Poinsett.
The holiday season is filled with many different colors that brighten up homes and businesses. Combined with the many twinkling lights used on displays, red and green decorations can add vitality to the dark days of December.
Greetings ofthe SeasonGreetings of
Holly and mistletoe are symbols of Christmas
The history behind some beloved Christmas songs
Whether faux or fresh mistletoe, a bouquet of this plant symbolizes peace and tranquility for Christmas.
“Oh, by gosh, by golly it’s time for mistletoe and holly. Tasty pheasants, Christmas presents, countrysides cov-ered in snow.”
As exemplified by this holiday hit by Henry Sanicola, Frank Sinatra and Dok Stanford, holly and mistletoe are an integral part of holiday imagery and tradition. Holly is used to adorn a home in green and red finery alongside ever-green boughs and wreaths. In addition, it has become customary to hang a bou-quet of mistletoe under which people are encouraged to share a holiday kiss. While these elements of celebrations are now incorporated into many of the secular and religious components of Christmas, they have very different origins.
HollyHolly has been used since the days
of the early Pagans as a decoration for midwinter festivities, when it was brought into homes to keep evil spirits
away. The ancient Romans also believed that holly prickles drove away evil spirits, and it held a place of honor at December festivals dedicated to the god Saturn. To avoid persecution during the Roman pagan Saturnalia festival, early Christians would participate in the tradition of hanging evil-repelling holly on their homes to appear like the masses. Eventually as the number of Christians grew, the tradition became less of a pagan one and more associated with Christians and Christmas. Some people have inferred that holly and its prickly edges is symbolic of the crown of thorns Jesus wore at his crucifixion, with the red berries representing blood.
MistletoeMistletoe was once held sacred by the
Norse, Celtic Druids and North Ameri-can Indians. It is actually a parasitic plant that grows on a wide range of host trees. Heavy infestation can dwarf the growth and kill these trees. In cultures across pre-Christian Europe, mistletoe was seen as a representation of divine male essence (and thus romance, fertil-
ity and vitality). The plant also was thought to be a symbol of peace, and anyone standing below it should receive tokens of affection. When enemies met beneath mistletoe, they had to lay down their weapons and observe a truce until the next day. This is how the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe likely began, and why a ball of mistletoe is now hung in homes during Christmas, a season of peace and affection.
Homeowners who hang mistletoe and holly around their homes during the holiday season should be mindful of pets and youngsters around the plants. Mistletoe and holly are considered to be moderately to severely toxic, and ingesting the leaves could be dangerous. Therefore, keep these plants away from curious hands. Mistletoe is commonly hung up high, which should make it less problematic, but holly should be hung high as well.
Now largely associated with Christ-mas celebrations, holly and mistletoe were once part of pagan rituals and ancient superstitions.
Holiday traditions vary from family to family, but one component of the holidays that seems to be universally enjoyed is a good Christmas song. Mu-sic is piped throughout malls and stores to entertain shoppers, and favorite tunes may be on the radio or streamed through a digital music service as fami-lies decorate their homes.
Many people may love Christmas songs and carols, but not everyone shares the same favorites. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of material when it comes to Christmas songs, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
In 2014, Time magazine researched records at the U.S. Copyright Office to determine the most popular and most recorded Christmas songs since 1978. when copyright registrations were digitized. The following are some of the more beloved holiday tunes and a bit of history about each song.
· “Silent Night”: One of the most re-recorded songs in history (733 versions since 1978), “Silent Night,” was com-posed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and put to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria. Today’s version is a slow lullaby, but it’s believed the origi-nal was a dance-like tune in 6/8 time.
· “O Holy Night”: This popular song was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem titled, “Minuit, chre^atiens (Midnight, Christians).” Many notable performers, including Perry Como, Celine Dion, Josh Groban,
Michael Crawford, and Lea Michele, have performed “O Holy Night.”
· “Silver Bells”: Now a Christmas clas-sic, “Silver Bells” originally was written for the Bob Hope film, “The Lemon Drop Kid.” Songwriter Jay Livingston wanted to title the song “Tinkle Bell,” but his wife dissuaded him from using the word “tinkle.”
· “White Christmas”: Irving Berlin believed his song “White Christmas” would be an instant hit. His prediction was correct, especially after singer Bing Crosby recorded it.
· “Jingle Bells”: Although it has become one of the more popular Christmas songs, “Jingle Bells” really was written for Thanksgiving. It’s also one of the oldest holiday songs of American origin. James Lord Pierpont, the song’s author, was inspired by the famous sleigh races of Medford, Massachu-setts.
· “Do You Hear What I Hear”: Noel Regney wrote this song as a call to peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The original context has long been forgotten, and “Do You Hear What I Hear” is now a staple of holiday celebrations.
· “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”: James Gillespie wrote this tune while riding a subway and reminiscing about his childhood with his brother. It became a hit after being per-
formed at the famed Macy’s Thanksgiv-ing Day Parade.
· “The Christmas Song”: This classic Christmas song was written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Torme. It’s usually subtitled “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” The song was written dur-ing a heat wave as a way to think cool thoughts. It only took 40 minutes to write the music and some of the lyrics. Nat King Cole’s rendition of the song is among the more popular versions.
Oil at OPEC in August 2014 was $115 per bar-rel. It was $1.30.9 at the service station pumps.
One barrel of oil equals 158.987295 litres. Today, oil at OPEC is under $36 US a barrel. It
costs $1.03.9 at our pumps. Someone is gouging us!
Gladys Brown, Midway, B.C.
As a resident of the Westbridge community and vice-president of the Westbridge Recreation Society, I/we would like to extend our many thanks to everyone that have contrib-uted and/or helped in the rebuilding of our community.
The list of participants and busi-nesses is extensive and almost im-possible to capture everyone’s in-volvement.
First off, one must recognize the lead role that our Kootenay Bound-ary Area E/West Boundary regional director Vicki Gee has taken in orga-nizing the many facets in which she has been involved in this recovery process.
The initial first responders were the fire departments from Midway, Greenwood, Beaverdell, Big White, Grand Forks and the Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue.
During and after the main fire, BC Forestry worked endless hours in the fire suppression and containment. Their cooperation was phenomenal.
FortisBC and Telus were immedi-ately on the scene and worked end-less hours to restore our vital ser-vices.
Donations of all sorts of items from household items to clothing and food poured in from all parts of the Interior. Westbridge Hall and Thrift Shop had to acquire ad-ditional storage, donated by the Big
Steel Box Co., to handle all the items which are still being received to this date. Communities such as Green-wood, Midway and Osoyoos have made major financial contributions.
Early in the program, we had charitable organizations and local businesses start the cleanup of all the burned debris and scrap materials left from the fire, followed immedi-ately by the organization of the do-nations, delivery, cutting and distri-bution of three logging truck loads of logs used to replace all the winter firewood lost during the fire.
An “Unmet Needs Committee” was established by Vicki Gee where a group of representatives from the communities, the Red Cross, the Li-ons Club, Habitat for Humanity and local resources was put together to document and prioritize those who had lost their homes and related buildings etc. and coordinate dona-tions of cash equitably.
This committee also authorized a program where a large group of volunteers started to replace sheds and animal shelters. A major part of this program was assisted by the donation of building modules by the owners/management of Mt. Baldy Ski Resort and insulation from Roxul Insulation—five buildings have been completed with two more in prog-ress and possibly another five in the planning.
All ages of excellent volunteers from as far as Lake Country, Grand Forks, Beaverdell, Carmi, Midway, Bridesville and Rock Creek have par-ticipated in the construction of these buildings. To facilitate this program, the generous uses of the Westbridge Community Hall facilities were made available.
The Main River Women’s Institute and members of the Westbridge Rec-reation Society organized meals for the volunteers seating as many as 15 hard workers for lunch. Additionally the committee has arranged for trau-ma counselling services donated by Vlodko Barchuk at the Westbridge Community Hall as requested.
All these activities still go on to-day and will in the new year with the replacement of a home organized by the Habitat for Humanity and many other items such as trees from Hansinger Nurseries, assistance from the Red Cross and the Lions Club, etc.
All we can say is a great big thanks to everyone that has volunteered or contributed in many, many ways to help the rebuild of the Westbridge and Rock Creek Communities in the wake of this devastating event.
Greenwood Elementary givesStudents present West Boundary Food Bank directors Gerry Schuler (far left) and Karen Lehmann (far right) with a cheque for $303.30.
Greenwood Elementary School students held an “entrepreneur market” following their Christmas concert last Wednesday evening, and the sale of a variety of handmade products raised over $600. The children learned much about the role of entre-preneurs and their much-needed innovations while they prepared goods for the market. Proceeds were split between the West Boundary Food Bank and the Greenwood Public Pool.
Students from Midway and Greenwood elementary schools provided some entertainment for visi-tors ahead of the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Prior to taking to the stage for a round of carols, the kids were treated to some jumbo hotdogs and piping hot chocolate, which helped keep them warm on the chilly afternoon.
Woodstove exchange
Pending final approval from the RDKB board, the Woodstove Exchange Program will be returning to the Koo-tenay Boundary area early next year. The program, which is province-wide, allows resident to exchange their old uncertified polluting stove for a new clean-burning EPA approved stove.
“It will need approval by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary at their next board meeting, which is probably mid-January,” said John Vere, program coordinator. “We’ll have money for 22 woodstove exchanges. The prospective start would likely be in February and it would run to late spring.”
Vere said the program allows resi-dents to change their old woodstoves for a pellet, gas or propane-fired heater as well as for the EPA approved stove. Fireplace insert and wood furnances may also qualify under certain condi-tions.
“The idea is to get rid of all the old woodstoves in which all the pollu-
tion goes straight up the chimney,” he said. “Modern stoves have recombustion systems
or catalytic systems so it burns off the extra pollution and low-ers the emissions substantially. You get a lot more mileage out of your firewood too because of the recombustion.”
Once the regional district approvs the program, residents can apply by filling out the form on Vere’s website cactusmusic.com (click on woodstove ex-change button) or by clicking on the link on the RDKB website (rdkb.ca). To qualify, residents must submit five documents to Vere: 1. Photo of the old appli-ance; 2. Proof of destruction of old appliance; 3. Copy of invoice for new appliance; 4. Tracking form; and a photo of the new appliance when it is installed.
Vere said the amount residents re-ceive will be $250 per exchange plus some RDKB area director may sup-
ply additional top-up grants. The ful amounts are still yet to be determined and will be posted on Vere’s website (cactusmusic.ca) as soon as available.
For more information, email Vere at [email protected] or call 1-866-992-9663.
The Heritage Credit Union welcomed Santa to its Greenwood branch on Friday as a special treat for the bank’s youngest cli-ents. Also on hand was photographer and Heritage Human Resources Manager Ian Laroque, who snapped dozens of photos of both big and little kids enjoying a visit with the bearded one. In a gesture typical of manager Donna Durban and her staff, along with Larocque, Heritage provided, free of charge, one 5x7 print and a gift for each child that dropped by during the inaugaral “photo with Santa” day, which is certain to become a popular annual event.
Christmas spirit in the Boundary
(Left) The Heritage Credit Union in Greenwood brought in a professional photographer on Friday to capture kids (and some adults) enjoying a visit with a very busy Santa Claus. This is the first year the Credit Union has done this, though expects it to become a very popular annual event.
(Right) Greenwood mayor Ed Smith got into the action as well, and was overheard telling Santa that he was hoping for a slightly calmer year in office in 2016.
