UNFOLDING OF THE CRISIS.

In 2003

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE),[14][15] a non-governmental organisation in New Delhi, said aerated waters produced by soft drinks manufacturers in India, including multinational giants PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, contained toxins including lindane, DDT, malathion and chlorpyrifos — pesticides that can contribute to cancer and a breakdown of the immune system.

In 2006

the Indian state of Kerala banned the sale and production of Coca-Cola, along with other soft drinks, due to concerns of high levels of pesticide residue

In 2004local officials in Kerala shut down a $16 million Coke bottling plant blamed for a drastic decline in both quantity and quality of water available to local farmers and villagers.

CRISIS FACED BY COMMUNITIES.

Coca-Cola was distributing its solid waste to farmers calling them fertilizers. But according to a BBC research it contained lead and cadmium making it toxic waste.

Most affected communties were adivasis, dalits, low income communities, landless agricultural labourers and women.

When water is extracted by digging deeper,it smells and tastes strange.Coca-Cola had been discharging waste water into the fields around its plants and rivers such as ganges. This resulted in soil and water bodies getting polluted and toxicated.

Communities were facing severe water shortages .Hence, wells were running dry and hand pumps were not working
