Avoiding Fire Alarms

The fire safety system on res is incredibly sensitive and directly linked to the fire brigade.

The resident responsible for a fire unit(s) calls out shall be liable for the cost and in cases where no individu-

al is identified the Residence manager reserves the right to apportion the cost across all the residents of

the unit involved. This cost is currently over $2,000

Please take care with the following to minimise disruption and to ensure the safety of your fellow ressies!:

When cooking:

Open windows

ALWAYS make sure the extractor fan is on

Cook on the back two burners when using a frypan.

(When using the front two burners, the smoke is more

likely to set off the alarm)

Use a small amount of cooking spray, not oil.

Do not use aerosol deodorant, hairspray, spray tan or hair straighteners in your bedrooms. Only use

these in the bathrooms of your units

Do not smoke anywhere inside Village units or the MB building.

If ever you hear the evacuation tones, DO NOT assume it is a false alarm.

You MUST VACATE IMMEDIATELY.

The evacuation meeting points are:

Up on the grass out the front of Building LA (MB ressies)

Gardener’s Creek (BSV ressies)

Treat each and every alarm as a real emergency.

Page 4: Resi Bulletin - Dis-O-Week

4

MB Smoke Alarm System

If a smoke alarm is set off at Building MB, it will make a high pitch sound.

You then have 60 seconds to attempt to disperse the smoke by:

Turning the appliance off (if applicable)

Opening windows

Putting extractor fan on

Fanning the detector with a tea towel, book or folder

DO NOT open front doors or bedroom doors as this is likely to result in triggering the hallway and bedroom

detectors.

If you are successful, the alarm will reset, the beeping will stop and the fire brigade will not be called.

If you are not successful in clearing the smoke, the system will go into full evacuation mode

requiring the evacuation of all residents and triggering the automatic attendance of the fire brigade.

Please note, this 60-second system is NOT in place at the Student Village. If you set off the smoke alarm at

the Village, it will go into full evacuation mode straight away.

Reporting Maintenance Issues Do you need something fixed in your room? You can report it online!

We have recently made significant improvements to the Deakin Residential Services website.

There is no longer a link to directly report maintenance requests. This is now available through the Resident

Login area, at the top right corner of the webpage after entering via your campus link, or via this link

http://starrez.deakin.edu.au/StarRezPortal/

In order to submit a maintenance request you

will require your Residences Login and Password.

Once you have logged in, you will then need to

select the Maintenance tab at the top of the

page, then New Job.

This is where you will also see any open requests

that you have previously reported.

You will then be also have to select the

Category, and the Item effected, and provide a

brief description.

Then select Save and Continue.

Your request is then submitted to the Residences Office. You can also review any previous requests via the

Residences Portal.

If you have an URGENT request, or have any concerns please contact the Residences Office directly.

We would like to congratulate some residents on receiving Community Service Awards for 2014 for taking

responsibility for the safety of the Village.

Well done to Casey Blake, Hayley Walker and Shae Smith for keeping a

safe eye on the village during the holiday period.

Can these three girls please come to MB reception to collect their movie

tickets?

Abbie Smith also received a Community Service Award

during the break for demonstrating true honesty.

Well done to all!

Rangehoods at MB Are you a resident of MB Building having difficulty working your range hood fan above your stove?

Take the easy steps below!:

1. Reach underneath the range hood 2. Gently slide it out towards you till it clicks in.

3. The light and fan should automatically start running.

It is essential you have the range hood on whenever you are using your stove in order to avoid fire alarms!

If you find your range hood is still not working, please report it via the Portal (see previous page).

Rubbish and Recycling It is resident’s responsibility to empty both bins in their units/apartments before they get too full.

For MB ressies, please empty them into the rubbish and recycling shoots

at the end of your hallways.

For BSV ressies, please empty your rubbish and recycling into the bigger

bins outside of your laundry.

The cleaners will empty your rubbish bins each time they clean, but they

will not touch recycling. They also cannot dispose of your rubbish if the

bags are too full.

Emptying your bins on a regular basis will ensure your unit stays hygienic

and that your bags of rubbish will fit in the shoots and bigger bins.

I would like to invite all students who are interested in seeing functions continue on Res to meet at the

MB Rec Room at 7:30pm on Monday 21st July.

This is an opportunity for all residents (RL, BEARS, 1st year, returners, International, Exchange) to come to-

gether and discuss the expectations of what is provided during a function and also the expectations of

resident’s behaviour.

It has come to my attention during the start of Trimester 2 that the expectations are unclear to some resi-

dents.

This is a chance for all residents to come together and contribute to moving forward on residence in a

positive way.

I hope to see you all there.
