WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
October 23 is WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, with a 2nd collection at Masses that weekend.
In 1926, Pope Pius XI instituted Mission Sunday,
celebrated on the next to the last Sunday in October, as a feast of catholicity and universal solidarity for all Christians to recognize their
common responsibility regarding evangelization of the world. The majority of this collection sup-

NEW BISHOP OF ARLINGTON! Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Michael F. Burbidge to be the fourth Bishop of Arlington. He previously served as Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh and succeeds Bishop Paul S. Loverde, who has led the Diocese since 1999. Bishop Burbidge will formally assume leadership of the Diocese during a Mass of Installation on December 6. For more information about Bishop Burbidge and the transition, go to www.arlingtondiocese.org.
Congratulations and welcome to our new Diocesan shepherd! Heartfelt thanks to Bishop Loverde
for his 17 years of service to the people of Arlington. Our prayers are with both.
WHILE IN ROME…..
Everything is bigger in St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest Catholic church in the world. Just look at the size of the baptismal font!
COMING SOON…..
We have two wonderful parish events coming up very soon. (Sorry I will miss both events while I am still on sabbatical in Rome.) First is our annual Oktoberfest, 2 to 5 p.m. at the school on Sunday, October 23. Fun, food, music and games for the entire family! No charge for admission but donations will be accepted at the door. A few weeks later, on November 12, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., will be the very popular annual Divine Libations celebra-tion sponsored by our Catholic Daughters. Tickets for the event are available online until October 31 (or until they are sold out!) at divinelibationscda.eventbrite.com. Enjoy!

WHAT IS YOUR CHILD BEING TAUGHT? ParentAndChild.org will sponsor a briefing for parents on School Family Life Education at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Octo-ber 25, in St. Mary’s Lyceum. Beginning with this curret school year, the Fairfax County Public School system is introducing a new curriculum for Family Life Education (FLE). With more than 186,000 students in the Fairfax County Public School system, the education they receive on these crucial matters will do much to shape the overall cul-ture. According to the laws of the Commonwealth of Virgin-ia, parents have the right to opt their children out at any time up until the time the lesson is taught. The decision to opt a child out of any or all of these lessons is a decision each individual family should make. To assist busy parents in reviewing the FLE, ParentAndChild.org has prepared a color-coded guide to the lessons. The guide and evaluation infor-mation can be found online at http://parentandchild.org. All are welcome to attend the briefing.
