Christ: Advent’s Hope (by Fr. Richard r. De Lillio, OSFS)

Fred Rogers, star of the famous TV children’s program “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood”, told his young viewers that a way to get past their fears and discover hope in times of crisis was to “look for helpers”. Through the helpers caring manner, they bring hope.

The people of Israel waiting in darkness for a messiah had helpers too. They found caring helpers in God’s covenant, in King David’s family line, in the prophets and finally in Jesus. Advent is all about helpers of hope.

As Advent begins again, the readings set a tone of expectation. The prophet Jeremiah highlights God’s promise to Israel to raise up from King David’s family a “just shoot” who will “do what is right and just”. Israel saw this as the messiah, who will bring deliverance for God’s chosen people.

The faithful cling to hope in the promise of God’s covenant with them. They were his people, and he was their God, even though many of David’s descendants showed few signs or interest in fulfilling that expectation. While hope may have dimmed, it never was lost.

In the second reading from Thessalonians, Paul highlights patience to a community abundantly grateful for their gift of redemption and eternal life. In fact, they are so overwhelmed that they wanted the messiah to return as soon as possible.

To temper their enthusiasm, Paul persuaded them to live Jesus’ message more visibly, preaching, “May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all”. He urged them to build the Kingdom by feeding the hungry, looking after the sick, taking care of those needing healing and sheltering the homeless—no matter who they are or from where they came. When the Lord comes, he will find them loving, loyal, holy and doing good works. From their generosity, Jesus will recognize he was loved during his absence.

Advent reminds us all that Jesus is coming to gather and claim his sisters and brothers. His disciples need not panic at this, but instead be as joyous as the angelic choir that sang at Jesus’ birth and as amazed as the shepherds who spread this astonishing good news. Why? Jesus already showed his followers the way, which we are encourage to follow every Advent.

Next Sunday’s Scriptures: A reflection on the readings for Mass next Sunday, December 9. As we await the coming of our Lord and Savior, joy and hope fill our hearts in anticipation of the Messiah. Prepare the way of the Lord! Today marks the Second Sunday of Advent, and we are filled with hope, joy and anticipation. The Lord enters the world to save us. Our paths will be made straight. Our burdens will be eased. Our darkness will be lightened. Salvation is at hand. The first reading, Baruch 5:1-9, calls Israel to abandon mourning and misery and replace it with the glorious splendor of God. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, 1:4-6, 8-11, is filled with hope and joy, embracing Christ’s message and mission. Hope continues in the Gospel, Luke 3:1-6, as John prepares the way of the Lord, baptizing in his name and proclaiming that salvation is near.

Reflection on this weeks reading!

What prayers will

you say each day and

each week during

Advent?

Thursday, December 6th 7:00pm Reconciliation Service

Join us in the Community Center

for Ice Cream following the service.

Parents, bring your decorated pillar candle to the service, along with your child’s

completed Blessed book and Interview sheet.

Think of a time when you had to wait for something. Maybe it was for your birthday. Maybe it was for a special trip with your family. How did you feel during these times of waiting? Before Jesus was born, the Jewish people had been waiting a long time for God to keep his promise. Do you remember the promise

that God made to them? The people believed that God would keep his promise of sending the Savior. Through prayers and songs, they asked God to help them. Even when the time felt long and they were growing impatient, they never stopped praying. Advent is our time of waiting. During Advent, we get ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus. During Advent, we pray to Jesus to fill our hearts with his love. It’s a time when we try to pray more and to do good deeds. It isn’t always easy. But we can offer our prayers and good deeds as gifts to God! I am continuing to work with Terry Humenik on the collection of 2019 calendars for

people in Nursing homes, Adult Foster Care homes, and shelters. These calendars help the residents with tracking special anniversaries, appointments, and general time so that their life doesn’t blend into a series of endless days where they lose their sense of time. We have already collected quite a supply of calendars but we will continue to collect them until sometime in early January when we will distribute them. Some people are also dropping off notepads that they may have received in the mail as promotional material and that is wonderful too. The people to whom we distribute the calendars to have voiced their appreciation for the notepads as well, so please feel free to drop those in the collection container in the gathering space.

When the separation wall for new building addition was added, the container that we use to collect cell phones for emergency 911 use went away. Being that this is a time of year when many people decide to buy for themselves or gift to someone else a new cell phone, I thought that we should bring that back out to accommodate such a need and assist those people who can use the old phones at the same time. We will have the collection container placed along the separation wall in the gathering space to meet that need until we can find another location after the move to the new building. Thank you for recycling these type of items that can be beneficial to a specific population of our brothers and sisters as well as beneficial to our planet.

The food pantry is in need of:

Tuna helper, Jello, mac & cheese, laundry detergent, and toilet paper.
