THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF ST. JUDE Mission Statement We, the people of the Catholic Community of St. Jude, are followers of Christ, striving to live the Gospel and reflect the compassion and love of Jesus to all people. Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9, 2018 September 22! FREE DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY Made for Happiness We will be gathering to celebrate the fact that we are all made in the image and likeness of God who made us for happiness. This event will enrich your faith and bring you together with up to 15,000 Catholics from all over the Lansing Diocese. The day starts with a walking Eucharistic Procession from the Cathedral (or Resurrection Church) to the Breslin Center where there will be many interesting displays and presentations in the morning followed by world renowned speakers. There will also be children’s activities and free professional babysitting during certain portions of the afternoon. The day ends with an all diocesan Mass beginning at 4 PM. You MUST register in advance even though the assembly is FREE. To register and for more information see madeforhappiness.org Bishop Boyea is looking for people to lend a helping hand for 2 hours or more on the day of the Assembly. 350 of 700 slots have already been filled. Please help us fill all of these spots by sharing this link with other ministry leaders in your parish: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0a4ba9ad23a4f85-made Parish Potluck & Exploring Faith: Tuesday, September 11 at 6:30pm immediately following the 6pm Mass. In our opening event, Rob and Sue Strouse will be sharing with the parish the experience of their pilgrimage to the Holy Land. This will be a PowerPoint presentation on the big screen with lots of beautiful photos and commentary to go with them. All are welcome, so whether you have been to the Holy Land, would like to, or are just curious about the paths walked by our Lord and Savior, please come with unanswered questions, a desire to deepen your faith, and bring a dish to pass, for what we hope is an enriching evening that brings our Lord more presently into your lives. Knights of Columbus—Novena for the Faith The most recent Grand Jury report out of Pennsylvania again has shaken the faith of many Catholics and the Knights of Columbus would like take some action by calling us to prayer to God, that our Bishops and Holy Father will take the immediate steps to correct the wrongs of the past and to make the necessary changes to the system to prevent these from occurring in the future. We are calling all Catholics to enter into a Novena of prayer with the Rosary. This Novena is a nine-day praying of the Rosary and it can be at Church, in your home, at work or when in the car beginning on Monday, September 17. The final day we are hoping to gather dozens if not hundreds into the Church on Tuesday, September 25 to pray the final Rosary right after the regular Tuesday evening 6:00PM Mass. Then join us in the Parish Hall for refreshments and fellowship. Look for a Knight who will have a hand out prayer card to assist you and your families with praying this Rosary Novena on the weekend of September 15 & 16.

We Need Everyone!

I don’t know about any of you but boy did this Summer fly by quickly. As we move into a new school year, there are many different areas of ministry and programs where we really, really need assistance. Our children and youth programs are a priority of mine and I hope with you as well, for they are our future. Please consider joining Mary Lippert’s team in forming our children in their faith as well as assisting Hallie in working with our youth in the Rooted program.

Of course there are many different service programs that we could not do without the generous support of our volunteers: Fish Fry, funeral dinners, hospitality receptions, Prayer Shawl and Quilt ministry, giving communion to the homebound or nursing facilities & hospitals, food pantry shopping or distribution of food to those in need, Matthew 25, parish ground spring cleaning, flower garden and tending to our various flowers beds around the parish, major food distribution of dinner baskets to those in need for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. And so many other needs.

And as always we need you to serve at the altar during weekend Masses as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, Greeters and Altar Servers. And finally, our music program needs voices, your voice as well as musicians of any instrument is welcome.

All in all, sharing these areas together makes it easier then to rely on a few to do it all. So become active with your faith by becoming active within your parish family and I guarantee you will be rewarded in knowing you are building up the Kingdom of God in the here and now.

Note: Parish Office hours on Friday’s will now be 9:00AM—1:00PM for the

whole year.

Also just a reminder that our Tuesday 6:00PM Mass has started up again.

Next Sunday’s Scriptures A reflection on the readings for Mass next

Sunday, September 16

Reflection on this weeks reading!

As the Christ, Jesus is the one that Israel has long waited for. Scripture contains many important questions. Chief among them is the one Jesus asks today, Who do you say that I am? How we answer that question goes to the heart of our faith. Can we, like Peter, say You are the Christ? And how deep is our commitment to this confession of faith? Describing the Servant of the Lord, Isaiah, 50:5-9a, emphasizes his total trust in God, even in times of trial and persecution. Saint James, 2:14-18, emphasizes that our faith must always have a practical dimension to it. We can demonstrate what we truly believe only through our actions and deeds. In Mark, 8:27-35, Jesus chastises Peter for failing to understand the true purpose of his mission.

Worship Central Office of Worship and Music Ministries | Patrick Paddock, Director

669-8335 ext. 20 [email protected]

Greetings to All, Welcome to Worship Central! Beginning this weekend all things relating to Liturgical and Music Ministries can be found on this page. Most weekends this page will consist of three parts: my column, the Liturgical Ministry Schedule and a list of upcoming rehearsals, formation/training opportunities and/or events. This very weekend is our annual parish Welcome Weekend. An opportunity to become more involved in parish life. We have a lot of options to choose from. My responsibility is to invite you to consider serving as a Worship Minister. If you already serve as one of our many Worship Ministers, thank you and I ask that you invite someone to minister along side you. My first experience as a Worship Minister was during my childhood. I was 8 years old when I completed my formation and training to become an Altar Server. What an honor and privilege it was to serve on the altar alongside the priest, deacon, lectors, extraordinary ministers of holy communion, cantors, psalmists, etc. That honor and privilege continues to this day. I very much look forward serving as a Worship Minister along side you now and going forward!

Greetings Corner Birthday Blessings to Rose Woodliff, Timothy Machowicz,

Patrick Beck and Sandra Orwat

Happy Anniversary on the occasion of their 64th to Joseph and Janet Barberio

59th to Edward and Marion McKeon 53rd to Dennis and Sally Locher 50th to Richard and Penny Byelich 35th to Stephen and Kimberly Naert Celebrating a milestone anniversary, a milestone birthday, a notable

accomplishment? If you happen to be celebrating a milestone birthday, 65 and older (we auto-matically print those who are celebrating 65, 70, 75, 80 and over) and we know about it, we will congratulate those folks. Contact the parish office at 669-8335 x 13 if you have someone to add.

New Program! Our RCIA program will be undergoing a few changes this year under the direction of Hallie Card. The program will be an upbeat and engaging way to learn about the Faith, encounter Jesus, and prepare for the Sacraments.

This program will run from September through May with in person sessions meeting twice a month until Lent and every week thereafter.

What if I want to join RCIA or know someone who might?

Send an email to Hallie Card or call her office.

I am a parishioner who feels called to help. What can I do? Am I committing to the whole year?

We are seeking people to share stories of their Faith journey with those seeking the Sacraments. If you wanted to be involved on a consistent basis, we would be overjoyed to have you, however, we are looking for people to commit to one session!

This sounds interesting, do I have to be in RCIA to come to the sessions? Nope! Feel free to pop in at any time to explore the Faith and get to know our catechumens and candidates!

SEPTEMBER IS HERE! A NEW SCHOOL YEAR HAS BEGUN! AND IT'S TIME FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN

THE DRESSER MINISTRY! The diapers will be delivered to Shared Pregnancy in about a week, but don't worry, the pack-n-play will still be there! How about if we fill it will ALL things baby!!! I'll put a wish list next to the pack-n-play for your viewing pleasure. Or you can pick up your favorite baby item to donate to the Ministry!! This will stay in place until the middle of November at which time the Dresser Ministry will take a break for the Advent season.

Thank you to all who have donated during the summer months! Your generosity is greatly appreciated! For more in-

formation please contact Leslie Feldpausch

A HEARTFELT WELCOME to newcomers to the Catholic Community of St. Jude, those

returning from summer cottages and vacations, along with everyone else who calls St. Jude home! I pray that you have all enjoyed a safe and relaxing summer and feel refreshed and ready to take part in all of the faith-filled opportunities that our parish offers. We have many new beginnings this year as we are adjusting to the retirement of our pastoral associate Terry Humenik, and I again wish her a joyful transition into new adventures in her life. We will continue to see Terry and experience her gifts as she maintains her presence in our parish family. I myself will be transitioning throughout this academic year from my role as your Operations Manager to a greater focus on Christian Service within the parish, which was overseen by Terry. This will coincide with the (if it’s God’s will) diaconate ordination of Bob Nieman and myself in May. Other parish staff members will be sharing their gifts maybe in a new way as well, specifically Hallie Card as she assumes responsibility for the RCIA ministry. So please join us this weekend at our welcome back socials to learn about new opportunities this year and how you can use your God-given gifts to serve your fellow parishioners. God Bless!

GK Andrew Rademacher (517) 819-8692. Knights of Columbus—Novena for the Faith The most recent Grand Jury report out of Pennsylvania again has shaken the faith of many Catholics and the Knights of Columbus would like take some action by calling us to prayer to God, that our Bishops and Holy Father will take the immediate steps to cor-rect the wrongs of the past and to make the necessary changes to the system to prevent these from occurring in the future. We are calling all Catholics to enter into a Novena of prayer with the Rosary. This Novena is a nine-day of praying the Rosary and it can be at Church, in your home, at work or when in the car beginning on Monday, September 17. The final day we are hoping to gather dozens if not hundreds into the Church on Tuesday, September 25 to pray the final Rosary right after the regular Tuesday evening 6:00PM Mass; followed by a reception. Look for a Knight to hand out a prayer card to assist you and your families with praying this Rosary Novena on the weekend of September 15 & 16.
