At Saint Francis University, we believe you can achieve anything you set your mind to –
if you have the passion, drive and faith to pour your heart into it. We’ll expect nothing less.
Like our namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, we have chosen the road of mission, purpose and values.
We encourage our students to reach higher – to go far into the world – carrying their own message
of genuine concern for peace and justice wherever they go. And then putting their talents toward
the diligent work of making the world better for everyone. Simply put, we believe a solid, Franciscan,
liberal arts education is the surest way for students to make sense of a world in rapid motion.
Certainly some goals may be harder to reach than others, but you’ll always end up farther ahead
if your first goal is to just reach higher than you ever have before.
go far.The goals of Franciscan higher education.
A humble and generous attitude towards learning
Reverence for all life, and the goodness of all humanity
Respect for the uniqueness of individual persons
A global vision
Service to the poor and the needy
A community of faith and prayer
A spirit of simplicity and joy
Franciscan presence
Life on our mountain
St. Francis of Assisi found peace and harmony in nature. We think you can too.
Saint Francis University isn’t just near the great outdoors, it is the great outdoors,
offering nature lovers something to venture into and a comfortable home to return to.
LET’S FACE IT, LIFE IN AND AROUND URBAN AREAS HAS ITS
ADVANTAGES. BUT WE’RE NOT SURPRISED BY THE MANY
STUDENTS WHO SAY THE MOUNTAINS THAT MAKE UP OUR
600-ACRE CAMPUS ARE THE PERFECT PLACE TO LIVE
OUT THEIR COLLEGE YEARS.
Our campus sits in the middle of Central Pennsylvania’s Laurel
Highlands, which are packed with four seasons of outdoor activities:
golf, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, cross-country and
downhill skiing, snow-tubing, spelunking, hiking mountain biking.
At an urban college, organizing activites like these might be a major
undertaking, but here, all you have to do is walk outside.

Joe Bopp wasn’t always into
chemistry. A freshman
chemistry class produced
a reaction that changed his
life. Joe quickly became
a fixture in the Chemistry
Department and students
sought him out for tutoring.
Professors became good
friends. “I’ve had fun. I got
a great education. And it’s
certainly going to take me
somewhere.” In fact it did. All
the way to Yale and a Ph.D.

Major choices. No matter which degree you are pursuing, the foundation
of your education at Saint Francis University will be the liberal arts. A core of general
education courses and co-curricular experiences that ground you in knowledge,
and in a set of skills you’ll need to thrive in today’s complex world.
Our curriculum is based upon the liberal arts, but the phrase
itself can be a bit misleading. The liberal arts are neither liberal
from a political view, nor artsy by definition. Instead, they are
liberal in the sense that they liberate your mind. They free
it from prejudice and ignorance and set it on a course to
imagine freely, analyze critically and arrive at good decisions.
Quite simply, the liberal arts build intelligent people who can
walk into almost any situation and speak their voice.
They give you a broad grasp of the way things work and
how people think. By immersing yourself in a wide range of
subjects, you’ll surely discover an interest you care deeply
about, or even a skill you never knew you had.
So whether you want to go into business or lead a life of
service, our general education program will give you a
solid foundation of knowledge and values and will take you
further in life than you ever thought possible.”
“You’re only competing with yourself. So strive to be better in the long term.
Be better than you were yesterday.
WHY THE LIBERAL ARTS MATTER
COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ARE MAKING BIG INVESTMENTS IN THE SCIENCES.
LIKE MANY, WE STAND PROUD OF OUR BRAND NEW 70,000 SQUARE-FOOT SCIENCE
CENTER — AND EVEN PROUDER OF ALL THAT’S HAPPENING WITHIN ITS CLEVERLY
DESIGNED CLASSROOMS AND WELL-EQUIPPED RESEARCH AND LAB SPACES.
In the end, it’s our people who set Saint Francis University apart. The faculty who bring
a morning lecture to life, and then show up still enthused to lead an afternoon lab with a
gentle, open-ended style born by years of experience. And your classmates, each unique
in their scientific talents and aspirations, yet all sharing a common drive — to bring a fresh
approach and a willingness to draw from the strengths of others.
When measured experience meets youthful excitement, sparks fly and a kind of alchemy
ensues. We see it in environmental fieldwork, mathematic competitions, undergraduate
research papers in basic sciences like biology and chemistry, and amazing collaborations in
emerging fields such as bioinformatics or new media and gaming.
Where will you contribute your spark?

School of Arts & LettersWondering what a degree from the School of Arts & Letters can do for you?
Almost anything you’d like. Our graduates are creative and intelligent; they’re life-long
learners leading happy lives as successful teachers, lawyers, artists and environmentalists.
Talk to employers in any profession, business
or teaching, foreign affairs or the law, and you
hear a common cry — send us nimble thinkers
who can synthesize complex ideas and com-
municate effectively. We find great hope for the
“thoughtful generalist” – the person who has
mastered the most important skill of all – the
ability to think critically, build consensus and to
lead ethically.
We encourage you to follow a heartfelt passion
— modern American literature, presidential
elections, Central American folk art — and
see where courses, faculty, and real-world
experiences eventually lead.
Yes, some majors might offer a more direct
path to a first job than others — but alumni tell
a powerful story about the value of persistence
and flexibility. As you master material, you gain a
quiet confidence and a knack for personal and
professional self-reflection that pays dividends
in the long run.

School of BusinessBusiness that reaches beyond the bottom line.
Today’s top business students are creating new networks
of possibility that provide both economic and social value.
At Saint Francis University, business majors learn
from day one that success grows not simply from
knowledge in concentration areas such as finance
or marketing, but from a larger ability to think,
speak and write critically.
You will take the insights of the classroom and apply
them routinely to actual business problems. You will
shape and hone your poise, collaborative style and
overall professional demeanor through internships,
case studies and other real-world experiences —
whether hosting a visiting executive on campus,
assisting local companies and non-profits or
travelling to a global finance hub such as London
with faculty and peers.
You’ll realize many advantages to studying
business in the broader context of the liberal arts
and the Franciscan tradition – none more important
than knowing yourself, your real strengths and
passions, and your drive for creating a singular path
to lasting success.

School of Health SciencesThe touch that heals. St. Francis of Assisi had a legendary gift for caring.
Saint Francis University, in turn, has helped thousands of students find their
vocations in the Health Sciences.
THE CURRENT HEALTH CARE REVOLUTION SHOWS NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN. AND THE NEED FOR
COMPASSIONATE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE THE WORLD OVER.
There always is a great need for health care professionals
who have a caring heart as well as a proficient mind.
So at Saint Francis, we pay close attention to the ethical
formation of students in addition to developing their
professional skills. This balanced approach, and the success
of our graduates, have given us a (highly sought after)
national reputation for excellence in the health sciences.
Saint Francis University graduates excel on the National
Physical Therapist Examination (NPTE). Our graduates have
a three-year average first-time pass rate of 91%. This quality
indicator places our program in the top tier of all accredited
programs in the country. (By comparison the three-year
average first-time pass rate is 86.75% for all Pennsylvania
schools of physical therapy.)
The smile that changed her world
During an outreach program
in the Dominican Republic,
Elisha Flieg found a smile
could touch children in a
matter of seconds, so she
thought, “imagine what could
happen if I did a little more.”
It became her inspiration to
become a Physician Assis-
tant. No big surprise, she’s a
big fan of getting involved.
She was in the leadership
sorority, secretary of the
class of 2012, and was a
double major – Physician As-
sistant and Spanish. At Saint
Francis, Elisha learned what
it meant to reach higher.
Now she’s discovering what
it means to go far.

Our students go far into the world.
As a Franciscan community, we embrace global vision as both an
economic reality, and a social and spiritual calling. Study abroad requires
equal parts humility and courage, and rewards all whom answer
the call with life-changing insight.
Campus life and classroom learning at Saint Francis
will challenge you to step outside yourself — to
confront human difference and diversity, and to learn
through the eyes of others. Once you’ve made that
adjustment, we encourage you to consider the
next level — study abroad.
Study abroad gives you the chance to gain cultural
competency and a competitive advantage, but will
also give you lasting benefits that reach deeper and
persist far into your adult life. For while technology
has closed the physical distance between people —
it remains a personal choice whether to go
the extra mile and embrace real understanding.Springtime in Italy Led by Fine Arts chair Charles
Olson, students pursue language and arts courses
and first-hand experience from their base in Parma
in the Emilia-Romagna of Italy, north of Tuscany.

summer abroad experience. From the art of Paris
to the splendor of the French countryside, students
from any major will benefit from this immersion.

Dorothy Day Center
Dorothy Day was a pioneer of American
Catholic social outreach, and the center named
after her is the social outreach arm of the
University. Its mission is two fold:
> to educate students in issues of social
concern; and,
> to involve them as volunteers in a variety
of programs providing services to children,
the elderly, veterans, the poor and people
with special needs.
HUGS United
While some seek only fun and sun during
spring break, many Saint Francis students
head to central and Latin American for a
spring break that changes their life forever.
Hugs United is your opportunity to join
students, faculty, and alumni who travel every
spring to the Dominican Republic where they
work closely in an orphanage and provide
much needed love and support.
You’ll volunteer in the local schools, work on
construction projects, and even provide much
needed medical attention to people who are
thankful for something as small as a Tylenol
tablet. St. Francis would approve.
Project R.E.D.
Reaching Every Door proves that you don’t
have to travel across the globe to give back.
R.E.D is a single day of service in which Saint
Francis students go into the local communities
of Loretto, Cresson, and Ebensburg to show
appreciation by performing work that is needed
within each community.
“ Make me an instrument...”In order to reach higher, sometimes you have to reach out. There are plenty of opportunities to lift the less fortunate in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.
AT SAINT FRANCIS UNIVERSITY, THE FRANCISCAN GOALS OF RESPECT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL, SERVICE TO THE POOR
AND NEEDY AND REVERENCE FOR ALL LIFE IS LIVED OUT BY OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY. HERE, VOLUNTEERING JUST SEEMS
TO BE THE NATURAL THING TO DO AND OUR GENUINE SPIRIT OF SERVICE IS A VITAL LINK TO OUR HUMANITY.
Where there is Love and Wisdom,
there is neither Fear nor Ignorance.
Where there is Patience and Humility,
there is neither Anger nor Annoyance.
Where there is Poverty and Joy,
there is neither Cupidity nor Avarice.
Where there is Peace and
Contemplation, there is neither
Care nor Restlessness.
Where there is the Fear of God
to guard the dwelling,
there no enemy can enter.
Where there is Mercy and Prudence,
there is neither Excess nor Harshness.”

How we play the game.
In the last 14 years, Saint Francis University athletes have brought home
almost 50 Northeast Conference championships. But that’s just part of the story.
CHAMPIONS ONE AND ALL
Obviously, we win our share of team trophies. But we also lead
the Northeast Conference with regard to Capital One/CoSIDA
Academic All-American selections, boasting 41 in all – from
football, basketball, track, soccer, volleyball, and field hockey –
the most of any school in the NEC.
Not surprising, our athletic champions also go on to become
champions in life as doctors, accountants, teachers, coaches,
and some as professional athletes.
YOUR OWN PRIVATE HEALTH CLUB
The Maurice Stokes Athletics Center houses basketball,
volleyball, an NCAA regulation swimming pool, racquetball
courts, tennis courts, an indoor track and weightlifting/fitness
equipment. DiSepio Institute offers the best and latest in
exercise equipment that would rival any health club.
And in addition to DeGol Field, our campus offers nature
trails, bike paths, a challenging nine-hole golf course,
and even a lake to relax alongside.

Student-athletes at Saint

“Become that someone”
which honors the friendship
of Jack Twyman and
Red Flash basketball legend
Maurice Stokes.
Both were stars in the newly
formed NBA when Maurice had
an accident in 1958 that forced
his retirement. Since Stokes
had no one to care for him,
Twyman stepped up and
became his legal guardian –
caring for Stokes for 12 years

changing the definition of the
word “champion.”
The NBA recently created the

St. Francis of Assisi founded the Franciscan Order and is our namesake.
Although he was born more than 800 years ago, we still have a lot to learn from the simplicity, balance and honesty of the Franciscan ideal.
St. Francis pointed the way in the arts, business, health care, and the environment. In fact, he left us an abundance of clues on how to strive, and thrive, in the world today.
In an age of gross commercialization and soulless materialism (whose roots go back to Francis’s own time), the world has never needed his inspiration so much as today.
If you wish to lead, follow St. Francis.
