Since itslaunch at the endof September2010, the estateversion of theAstra has soldwell in the UKand abroad.

Within ninemonths, 6,316Sports Tourerswere sold in theUK where, in thefirst half of 2011,it was the topseller in its class.

In the sameperiod, 29,622Sports Tourerswere sold inGermany –historically astrong estatemarket and alsothe largestmarket for theTourer.

Overall some92.5 per cent ofSports Tourersbuilt were boundfor export.BRITISH sports carfirm Caterham is tosell cars in China forthe first time.

The company hassigned a deal withCourtenay TradingInternational (CTI)which is looking toappoint six dealerswith an initial salestarget of between30 and 50Caterham Sevens inits first year.CZECH carmaker Skoda hasbeen voted themost satisfyingbrand in a surveyby consumermagazine Which?Car.

We negotiate boulders,angled ruts and a deep floodedsection – at one point the car’sheadlights dip spookilybeneath the surface – untilafter 2,300 metres of uphillaction, the Evoque emerges infront of the Kings Dock.

Five minutes later the nextstage of the event’sdemanding urban section seesus flick on the Hill DescentControl button, lift feet off thebrakes and the Range Roverfinds its own way down aramp into the Dukes Dock.

Follow a narrow pontoonunder the passenger walkway,splash through anothersubmerged section and backup a ramp to dry land.

These are the sort ofmanoeuvres the Evoque,which goes on sale in midSeptember, takes in its stride.

The average owner willrarely experience these sort ofconditions, nor the heavyduty off-road course thathighlighted a drive from RAFValley in Anglesey, throughSnowdonia and over theDenbigh moors towards

Merseyside.But it’s reassuring to know

that the Evoque can hack it inthe same mud-plugging leagueas its big brother the RangeRover and stablemates likethe Disco and Freelander 2.

Without doubt this is themost eagerly awaited launchof the year – from the home ofThe Beatles, it’s the seriouslyfab 4x4.

Advance interest in theEvoque has been phenomenaland the Halewood factory isworking to capacity to copewith a demand that will seethe car sold in 160 countries.

Having spent two daysliving with the baby RangeRover it’s easy to appreciatewhy so many potential buyers- 200,000 and counting – can’twait to lay their hands on one.

It’s a cracking car to drivewith a shedload of punch,bags of poise and a balancedfeel from the steering, whichgets even better on modelswith the adaptive dampingMagneRide system fitted.

People use the expression‘cutting edge design’ quite

glibly these days, but theEvoque has the full shebang –futuristic lines, bags ofinterior space, upmarketequipment, green credentialsand the means to personaliseevery car.

It also breaks new groundby being the first Range Roverto offer the option offront-wheel drive for peoplewho don’t need off-roadhardware, but do want tominimise their carbonfootprint.

There will be a choice ofthree engines – a 2.0-litre Si4petrol plus a 2.2-litre SD4

diesel with 150 or 190PS, theformer powering thetwo-wheel drive CoupeEvoque which goes on saleearly next year.

Body styles are five-door orthe slightly more elegantthree-door Coupe, and awhopping range of optionsand accessories are available.

Land Rover is confident of asignificant take-up in these,gauging by the needs of the18,000 customers who havealready placed orders.

But then in addition tobeing able to choose from thelikes of 16 designer interiors,a dozen exterior paint jobswith three contrasting roofcolours, 17 to 20-inch wheelsand a massive panoramicglass roof, this is also the firstRange Rover that can parkitself. And the Evoque’s threedistinct design themes seePure, with a contemporaryfeel, Prestige, which majorson luxury, and Dynamic for amore sporty character.

Prices start at £27,995 for aneD4 Pure five-door manual2WD version, while thefour-wheel drive equivalentcosts an extra £750 at £28,705.Petrol power comes in at£38,995 for the Si4 Dynamic6-speed automatic.

WE’VE all been there.Driving for hourswhile her ladyshipsnoozes in the frontpassenger seat.

Then she wakes to say she mightas well be talking to herself becauseyou never even acknowledge herpresence, let alone engage inconversation.

Well last week was an exception.I decided to let ‘government’wallow in sumptuous luxury, byshowing her how to operate themassage function on theMercedes-Benz S-Class.

For the next couple of hours shebasked in the big saloon’s ExclusivePassion leather seats whilelistening to some ambient soundsthrough the car’s 15-speakersurround sound system.

To be fair, it wasn’t too bad in thedriver’s seat either because when itcomes to sub-hundred grand luxurymotoring the spacious S-Class is as

good as it gets.Pretenders to the crown come

and go but the big Benz just stayson top, with more safety gizmos andimprovements in efficiency.

Totting up the standard kit onthe tested long wheelbase modelrevealed a staggering 79 differentindividual items ranging fromconvenience features like anautomatically lowering headrestraint to touches like lit vanitymirrors for rear passengers.

If you really want to whack upthe tab there are the options, 22 of

which appeared on the tested 350 LBlueTEC model for a total bill of,wait for it, £30,495.

They included Night View Assist– with infrared reflectivewindscreen and pedestriandetection – at £1,690, a TV tuner at aprincely £855 and topping the tallya Bang & Olufsen front seatentertainment package for awhopping £6,700.

And of course just abouteverything can be operated via arotary dial placed between the frontseats.

The V6 diesel engine in the 350 LBlueTEC is the most economical inthe S-Class range, returning anaverage figure of 41.5mpg. It’s alsostrong, silent and nicely refined.

Need some instant punch andthere’s a thunderous rush from the258bhp on tap, otherwise the Benzcruises effortlessly at speed with anice balance from the steering.

And the car’s airMATIC

suspension assesses both drivingstyle and road condition to ensurethe optimum mix of ride qualityand handling.

Safety is paramount in theS-Class with everything fromAttention Assist, which can gaugewhen a weary driver losesconcentration, to ESP, skid control,multiple airbags and child seat

recognition included in the price.One criticism though. Active

Blind Spot assist, whereby a lightflashes on your wing mirror ifanother vehicle is on your inner orouter, only comes as part of anextra cost driving assistancepackage. It should be a standardsafety feature on every car, let alonea luxury limo.

Blackmagic at the double fromMazdaMAZDA is bringing a darker edgeto its range with a new pair ofspecial edition models – an MX-5Sport Black and a Mazda2 Black.

The coupe roadster is inspiredby the 275bhp Maxda MX-5 GTracer competing in the 2011Britcar Production GTNChampionship and will be

limited to 500 cars for the UK.It boasts unique paintwork and

an enhanced specification,offering more for a lower pricethan the car it’s based on.

A highlight is the BrilliantBlack powered retractablehard-top which contrasts withthe choice of Spirited Green

metallic, Crystal WhitePearlescent and Velocity Redmica body colours butcomplements the dark gunmetal 17-inch alloy wheels.

Pricing is £22,995, which is£360 more than the 160PS,2.0-litre, six-speed transmissionSport Tech model.

The new Mazda2 Blackfive-door is also available inthree colours and is based on the84PS, 1.3-litre Tamura modelbut adds a black vinyl roof, mattblack 16-inch alloys, front foglights, privacy glass and rearbumper sports trim. It costsfrom £12,395.
