Lesson

1 DRAMA AND NOVEL

Before we discuss our lesson, let us talk about literature in Southeast Asia.

Literature in Southeast Asia is almost a mixture of traditional culture, religion, and other

beliefs, all combined. As most people couldn’t read, legends and folklore were passed on by

word of mouth, dance, and writing. Drama and Novel are known in these Southeast Asian

countries.

__________2. It does not require all the elements to be a good novel.

__________3. A drama presents a whole picture as compared to a short story.

__________4. A novel displays only one aspect of life.

__________5. Comedy, Tragedy, Farce, Melodrama and Musical drama are all

elements of drama.

What Is It

Let’s discuss!

Drama is one of literary genres or composition written in verse or prose. The term

“drama” comes from a Greek word meaning “dran,” which means “to do/act” or “to

perform.” It refers to the performance of written dialogue and stage action. The person

who writes drama for stage directions is known as a “dramatist” or “playwright.”

Page 6: Features of Drama and Novel - ZNNHS | Official Site

4

The drama elements involve character, setting, plot, point of view, theme, and

techniques such as acts, scenes, dialogue, and stage directions.

Let us consider a few popular types of drama: Comedy, Tragedy, Farce, Melodrama,

and Musical drama.

1. Comedy – Comedies are lighter in tone than ordinary works and provide a happy

conclusion. The intention of dramatists in comedies is to make their audience laugh.

Hence, they use quaint circumstances, unusual characters, and witty remarks.

2. Tragedy – Tragic dramas use darker themes, such as disaster, pain, and death.

Protagonists often have a tragic flaw — a characteristic that leads them to their downfall.

3. Farce – Generally, a farce is a nonsensical genre of drama, which often overacts or

engages slapstick humor.

4. Melodrama – Melodrama is an exaggerated drama, which is sensational and appeals

directly to the senses of the audience. Just like the farce, the characters are of a single

dimension and simple or maybe stereotyped.

5. Musical Drama – In musical dramas, dramatists tell their stories through acting and

dialogue but through dance and music. Often the story may be comedic, though it may

also involve serious subjects.

On the other hand, the novel is a long narrative work of fiction with some realism. It is

often in prose form and is published as a single book. The word ‘novel’ has been derived

from the Italian word ‘novella’ which means “new.” Similar to a short story, a novel has

some features like a representation of characters, dialogues, setting, plot, climax, conflict,

and resolution. However, it does not require all the elements to be a good novel.

There are many types of novels. They include mysteries, thrillers, suspense, detective,

science fiction, romantic, historical, realist, or even postmodern.

A novel presents a whole picture compared to a short story that displays only one

aspect of life or one side of the story.

It also shows a vast panorama to its readers to see the story through an age in which it

is presented. A novel also presents a conflict and resolution. It is a strong tool to present

the philosophical, historical, social, cultural, and moral perspectives for a writer.
