WELCOME

TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, July 21st

Luke 10:38-42 “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

“Jesus comes to Martha and Mary as a guest. . .though they know who he is from the start. Martha shows love of neighbor in the way that she serves their guest. Mary shows love of God in the way that she sat with Jesus and listened to every word he spoke. In the way that they treat the guest in their home, they do everything the Lord asks of us.”

DAILY READINGS FOR THE WEEK

Monday Song 3:1-4b; John 20:1-2, 11-18 Saint Mary Magdalene (Feast) – “With some other women, Mary traveled with Jesus and the apostles during his ministry. Her great love for Jesus was expressed when she faithfully stood near the cross after the other disciples fled. She. . .became the first witness to the resurrection. She became the ‘Apostle to the Apostles’ when she announced this mystery to them.” Source: Living With Christ, July 2019

Tuesday Exod 14:21—15:1; Matt 12:46-50

Wednesday Exod 16:1-5, 9-15; Matt 13:1-9

Thursday 2 Cor 4:7-15; Matt 20:20-28 Saint James, Apostle (Feast) – “James, son of Zebedee, was a fisherman with his brother John. The brothers were close to the Lord, being present at the raising of Jairus’s daughter, at the transfiguration, and in the Garden of Gethsemane. He is known as James the Greater, to distinguish him from the other apostle of the same name. He is a patron saint of Spain and of pilgrims.” Source: Living With Christ, July 2019

Friday Exod 20:1-17; Matt 13:18-23 Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Memorial) – “The gospels tell us nothing about Mary’s parents, not even their names. What we know from Christian tradition is found in non-scriptural writings such as the Protogospel of James. Devotion to St. Anne existed in sixth-century Constantinople and in eighth-century Rome. By the sixteenth century this feast day was universal. Joachim has been honored in the East from the earliest days, but in the West only since the sixteenth century. May we imitate their example as loving parents and do all we can so that children might flourish as Mary did.” Source: Living With Christ, July 2019

Saturday Exod 24:3-8; Matt 13:24-30

A Message From The Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

I have several requests to alert you about today. In addition to your faithful presence and support of our ongoing mission, the following needs have been brought to my attention.

First, we have announced that the Office of Concern food pantry has a summer appeal underway for diapers. Donations of diapers may be brought to the elevator lobby for pick up by the Office of Concern.

Next, we will be hosting three families of mothers with children during the week of July 28 through August 4. We need volunteers to sleep over and to provide meals for our guests. Please see page 6 of this bulletin for more information.

Then, on August 3 and 4, Fr. Nakka David Raju from the diocese of Vijayawada, India will be asking for our support in a second collection at all Masses.

And, lastly, on September 1, Christopher Tomeo, a recent graduate of our Academy, will be conducting a drive for school supplies to assist St. Ann School in Harlem. Christopher is undertaking this good work in partial fulfillment of his goal of becoming an Eagle Scout.

It is our privilege to share our resources as much as we are able, so I wanted you to know about all these worthy causes asking for our help throughout the summer.

Thanks to all who made the Feast Day barbecue so wonderful!

Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

fr. Dan [email protected]

WEEKLYRUNDOWN

Homeless Family Program Hosted by OLMC

July 28 – August 4, 2019

Volunteers Needed – Next week OLMC will be hosting working homeless families as part of Family Promise of Bergen County’s Homeless Family Program. There are still openings for those who would like to donate their time to help with this program. A meeting for volunteers (both those already signed up and those who would like to sign up) will be held on Wednesday, July 24th at 7 PM in the Titus Room.

The OLMC community will open her doors to working homeless families from July 28th through August 4th, 2019 as part of the temporary housing program run by Family Promise of Bergen County.

As of this writing, three women and a total of four children (all under the age of five) will be staying in our Academy for a week. We will provide shelter, dinner, breakfast and supply lunch. The families eat and sleep here during the evening hours; during the day they work and their children attend daycare/summer camp.

There are many ways you can help! Please email Elliot Guerra at [email protected] with what you can do. Here are ways to help:

Volunteer Shifts of volunteers are required to cook and serve dinner in the evening. We can also use volunteers in the morning to set up for breakfast. At least two volunteers must stay overnight as per Family Promise regulations.

Donate We will need to fill our pantry with items for the families, such as luncheon meats, snacks and more. Also, while Family Promise provides beds, we will need gently used or new linens and new toiletries.

Pray Please offer up the volunteers, organizers and families in your prayers leading up to and during the time of service that the Spirit of God fosters within us a successful event. We understand that people travel during the summer and, if you are, we hope you enjoy your rest and ask that you pray for us. May OLMC continue to be a place that “No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you’re from, no matter where you’re going, no matter how good or bad things seem, you are always welcome.”

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. The following themes are at the heart of Catholic social teaching:

“Imagine yourself always to be the servant of all,

and look upon all as if they were Christ our Lord in person.

And thus shall you do him honor and reverence.”

St. Teresa of Avila

A Friendly Home Is A Blessing. . .

“The Church has always taught that every guest is to be treated like Christ. A Christian family can practice hospitality in ordinary ways by welcoming new neighbors or by including those who are alone for the holidays. In a world that can be cold and unwelcoming, a friendly home is a blessing.” Source: RCLBenziger.com

Blessed Titus Brandsma, O.Carm. Carmelite Feast Day: July 27

Born in Bolsward, Holland, in 1881, Bl. Titus Brandsma joined the Carmelites in 1898 at the age of 17. He made his first profession in 1899 and then he was ordained to the priesthood in 1905.

He was noted for being ready to receive anyone in difficulty and to help in whatever way he could. In the period leading up to and during the Nazi occupation in Holland, he argued passionately against the National Socialist ideology, basing his stand on the Gospels, and he defended the right to freedom in education and for the Catholic Press. As a result, he was imprisoned. So began his Calvary, involving great personal suffering and degradation while bringing solace and comfort to the other internees and begging God's blessing on his jailers. In the midst of such inhuman suffering, he possessed the precious ability to bring an awareness of goodness, love and peace. He passed from one prison or camp to another until he arrived in Dachau where he was killed on July 26, 1942. He was beatified a martyr by Pope John Paul II on November 3, 1985. The Church welcomes into the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process of preparation persons who have never been baptized, those already baptized in another Christian tradition, or baptized Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation. “Ordinary family practices—displaying Christian symbols in the home, saying grace in the restaurant, helping the poor, and telling stories of the saints—are ways we pass on our faith to our children and grandchildren.”
