Oestriecherwill present The Lenape: Lower New York’s First Inhabitants.For over 12,000 years, the region that is now lower New York,New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware was home togroups of Lenape (Delaware Indians) and their prehistoricpredecessors. By the late 18th and early 19th centuries,however, after a tragic series of removals had taken themhalfway across the continent, the broken remnants of thesetribes finally settled in parts of Oklahoma, Wisconsin, andOntario. By the late 20th century, only a handful of elderscould still speak their native language, or had knowledge of thetraditional ceremonies, religious beliefs, and life ways. In thislively and engaging talk, David M. Oestreicher combinesarchaeological and historical evidence with decades of firsthandethnographic and linguistic research among present-day Lenapetraditionalists, to arrive at a full picture of the Lenape fromprehistory to the present.This event is free. WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT GRANTSNew Application Deadline is December 13. Grants Will Help FundProjects to Improve Water Quality, Reduce Polluted Runoff andRestore Natural Habitats in NY.The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation(DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced that the agency hasextended the deadline to apply for $45 million in grants for WaterQuality Improvement Projects (WQIPs) through December 13,2013. The WQIP program is a competitive, reimbursement grantprogram for projects that improve water quality, reduce pollutedrunoff and restore habitat in New York’s bodies of water. Recipientscan be reimbursed 75 percent to 85 percent of the project costs,depending on the type of project.Municipalities, Soil and Water Conservation Districts and not-for-profit corporations are eligible to apply for funding. Funding willbe available for projects that focus on:• Municipal wastewater treatment• Polluted runoff abatement and control from non-farm sources• Aquatic habitat restorationApplication materials for Water Quality Improvement Projects areavai lable for download on DEC’s website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/pubs/4774.html. “NORTH GREENBUSH-COLLEGE TOWN?”Here’s a quiz for you: What township in the three county area(Albany, Rensselaer, and Saratoga) can boast of having acommunity college? If you’ve read the title to this story youknow the answer.The southern part of Hudson Valley Community College is in ourtown.I got the idea for this story after hearing about a conversationthat took place at the recent opening of the new Science Centerat the College. One official asked another if they were standingin Troy or North Greenbush. Depending on where you were inthe building, it may have been North Greenbush.The College was founded in 1953 as the Hudson Valley TechnicalInstitute in downtown Troy. The current name was officiallychanged in 1959. Already by that time the school was lookingfor a larger location to site a campus. 75 acres of Williams farm,which straddled the Troy-North Greenbush line was purchasedand construction began.Before the new campus officially opened, the school and thecounty weathered a contentious lawsuit brought by a group ofRensselaer County taxpayers who argued that the Countyshould not have to pay half the cost of the campus constructionif fewer than half the students were county residents. TheCounty won that lawsuit, but the issue of tuition paid by non-county residents is still argued today.There are some interesting historical tidbits regarding theWilliams Farm. Its name goes back to former State SenatorJohn Williams. He owned and trained trotters and pacers on atrack which is now part of the College campus. Local childrenwould visit the farm to pet his white horse named Major. Therewere also circus events held several years on the northernpart of the property. When Senator Williams and his siblingspassed away, St. Michael’s Church was built on the site of thefarm house which was torn down and another piece of NorthGreenbush history vanished.Before the Williams family owned the property, it was part ofthe estate of Henry Burden, of Burden Iron Works fame. Thehouse’s history goes back even further, to Peter Defreest whosefamily may have built the house as early as 1791.So even though the HVCC campus history goes back over 50years, that portion of North Greenbush territorial historypredates it by almost 200 years.

SCHODACK VOTERS HAVE SPOKENLetter to the Editor: Schodack had an election for supervisorand the people had a choice. The end result was the same,but at least the office was won by the people’s choice and notchosen by a party committee. When I decided to run as awrite in candidate, I did not expect to win; but as the daysgrew closer to Election Day, the support from well wishers wasthe most I have ever experienced. The unofficial results wereDennis Dowds, the incumbent supervisor, won by a margin ofbetter than 2 to 1. Not very impressive on my part, but I didnot do any campaigning except for putting my signs out andprinting the sample ballot in the Advertiser. I also distributedsample ballots at homes where the Advertiser may not bedelivered. As far as I am concerned, my mission wasaccomplished. I gave the people a choice and Supervisor Dowdscan now feel he has the people’s endorsement. I congratulateDennis on his victory. I think it was one of the cleanestcampaigns ever as I do not know of any negative commentsDennis made about me, and I did not say anything negativeabout Dennis. I have a good rapport with the town board andthe town employees. I will still continue to watch the operationsand spending of the town.This victory brings out some questionS such as; does thismean that the people who voted for the incumbentsare satisfied with the assessment of their propertyand the taxes they are paying?It is up to the town board to initiate an affordable revaluationof the property we pay taxes on. Could it be possiblethat the majority of voters know and are satisfied asto how their tax dollar is spent? Are they also happythat the town has engaged an engineer to decide howour zoning code will be reviewed and changed?Wouldn’t it be wise to first give the people a voice tohelp steer any changes which may be necessary?There are many other items which may need someconsideration. TOWN OF SL AWARDED $7500. GRANT for

FISHING ACCESS AREAIt is my pleasure to announce that the Town of Sand Lake wasawarded a $7,500 grant from the Hudson River Valley GreenwayCommunities Grant Program for the development of the fishingaccess area at Glass Lake. The Town will construct a permanentpublic fishing and boating access area on Glass Lake and thegrant will help maintain and construct a parking area, crosswalk and footpath to the lake. In addition, providing newsignage and attractive fencing and landscaping will be designedwith the natural environment in mind while highlighting thescenic views.Councilman Mark Cioffi is spearheading this project and recentlygathered quotes from area contractors to assist the Town inconducting the work. We are hopeful that some of the workcan commence before the winter weather is upon us.Assistance through the Hudson River Valley Greenwaycontinues to be one of the Town’s most valued partners inhelping with community planning and resource protection. Thisgrant will provide supplemental funding for this very specialproject.

The Bleecker Consort returns to St. Paul’s Tuesdays at NoonConcert Series on November 19 with a program entitled, StellaSplendens: A Constellation of Medieval and Renaissance Music.The 45-minute concert takes place at 12 pm at St. Paul’sChurch, Third and State Streets in downtown Troy.Specializing in medieval and renaissance music, the consort’smembers come from a variety of professional backgrounds andplay a diverse set of instruments, including early strings (e.g.vielle, viol, bandurria, mandola, mandolin, lute, laud, harp,hurdy-gurdy), recorders, reeds (cornamusen, kelhorn, dulcian,crumhorn, rauschpfife), and a variety of percussion. Letter to the Editor: Another election day has passed, and Iwould like to compliment the residents of Sand Lake that voted.In an off year election, the turnout was very good and youshould be proud.I often hear that someone is not going to vote because theysay one vote does not make a difference. If you log on toWikipedia and close elections, they list around 100 that wereties or a few votes difference. Three include 1994 in Saint-Jean Quebec that ended in a tie with 38,899 votes cast. Againa tie in Quebec at Champlain in 2003 with 33,919 votes and in1974, the US Senate race in New Hampshire with 223,363votes cast the winner won by 2 votes.I would like to add that it is good to vote. The members of the Off-Broadway Players have been busymaking preparations for the annual Winter One Acts. Thisshowcase of short plays by students is a rewarding and uniqueexperience for the writers, who get to see their works come tolife on stage. Emily Bergerson is one of the students whoseplay was selected. She thinks it will be great to see her showperformed and can’t wait. English teacher Lauren Mouzakes-Viola had her ‘Writing for the Stage’ students submit their shortplays. She says that writing a script is different than writing astory. “It allows students to tell a story through actions anddialogue,” Mrs. Mouzakes-Viola said. “We have so many talentedwriters. It’s important to showcase students’ abilities on andoff stage.” The students who write the plays also get theopportunity to direct them. Alex Wojtaszek had her showConsequences performed last year and is ecstatic to be selectedagain. “It’s amazing to see your vision come to life,” she says.The students who perform in One Acts also say it’s not likeanything they’ve done before. Mac Hoyt has been playingsoccer for thirteen yearsnow, ever since his dad gothim started with theBrunswick Soccer Club. Macplays soccer all year round.After the Averill Park seasonends, he continues with hisclub soccer season. Mac andthe team practice everydayafter school, and he practiceswith his club team, the AlbanyAlleycats, 2-3 times eachweek while participating intournaments with the

Alleycats up and down the east coast. You can find Mac (#7) atthe Averill Park boys final four game for states this Saturday atMiddletown, starting at either striker or center midfield position.Along with soccer, Mac also enjoys snowboarding in the winter.Mac would like to thank his parents for pushing him to alwaysdo his best and shaping him into the person he is today.This year, Mac is taking AP (Advanced Placement) Governmentand Politics, Physical Education, Physics, Statistics, andEngineering Design and Development, with a 91.77 GPA. The Troy Elks 2013 Hoop Shoot will beheld on November 23, 2013 at the CYOCenter located at 237 4th Street in SouthTroy. Registration starts at 8:15am andcompetition begins at 9:00am.The competition is open to both boys andgirls, ages 8 thru 13. Contestant’s agegroups will be determined by their ages asof April 1, 2012. Proof of age must beprovided at the time of registration. Thewinner in each age group will be eligible tocompete in the District Hoop Shoot, after

The Averill Park boys’ soccer team has had an unbelievableseason this fall, and it’s not over yet!After becoming Section II Champions on Saturday, 11/2, theboys began their pursuit for the state title. The quest beganon Wednesday, 11/6. The boys played in the first round of theNew York State Public High School Athletic Association(NYSPHSAA) tournament. They faced CBA-Syracuse at ColonieHigh School. The boys scored early in the game, and maintainedthe lead throughout the game. The game ended with a scoreof 3-0, with the Warriors advancing to the next round. Thethree goals were scored by seniors Ben Reinisch and Mac Hoyt,as well as junior Josh Lionarons. Senior Owen Nuss had anassist in this game, also. After defeating CBA, the boys spenta couple of days practicing and preparing for their next game,which was played on Saturday, 11/9.The Warriors faced the Peru Indians at Plattsburgh High Schoolin the NYS Regional Championship game. Unlike the other game,this contest was very close. Junior Josh Lionarons scored inthe first half of the game to put the Warriors up 1-0. However,Peru matched that goal in the second half, ending regulationplay with a tie. Both teams entered overtime. After neitherteam managed to score, a second overtime commenced. Thiswould be the final overtime of the game, because senior OwenNuss scored the final goal of the game that resulted in anotherwin for the Warriors! The final score was 2-1. The Warriors arenow in the Final Four of the NYSPHSAA Tournament. They areset to play Mendon on Saturday, 11/16, at Middletown HighSchool at 1:45 pm. A win here will put the Warriors into theNYSPHSAA championship game on Sunday, 11/17 (also atMiddletown High).Congratulations to the soccer team, both players and coaches,on the success so far, and good luck this weekend!I’d also like to mention the Powder Puff football game that tookplace at APHS on Friday, 11/8. Junior and senior girls faced offin a flag football game. Both teams played tough, even thoughit was an incredibly cold night. Congratulations to the seniorgirls who won the game, 28-21. The event was hosted byAPHS Key Club to benefit the American Cancer Society. As thepresident of Key Club, I would like to thank everyone for comingout and supporting such a great cause. More than eight thousand participants fromthree dozen states are expected to descendupon the home of iconic Uncle Sam thisThanksgiving (Nov. 28) for the 66th annualTroy Turkey Trot, one of the oldest and largestroad races in New York state. “The Troy Turkey Trot has been bringingfamilies together for Thanksgiving since 1916and continues to evolve each year,” said Troy

Turkey Trot Event Director George Regan, noting that the trotis the 64th oldest road race in the world and the 12th oldest inthe nation. “Based on the tremendous success we had lastThanksgiving, we’re anticipating another record field.”The day gets underway with the 10K event, which drew morethan 1100 registrants last year, at 8 a.m. Race officials willclose the 10K course after 90 minutes by 9:30 a.m. Thoseunable to complete the 10K in the allotted time period areasked to enter the shorter 5K distance which lures up to 5,747registered participants and kicks off at 10 a.m. Families areinvited to show their support and cheer on their runners.Following the 10K, will be the Grade School Mile, which is opento children up to eighth grade and the Turkey Walk, a one-milefitness walk for those who prefer to burn off their pre-mealcalories at a slower pace. There is a fee of $10 for the GradeSchool Mile and the Turkey Walk. Chip timing will be utilized forthe Grade School Mile. Participants for both events, which getunderway at 9:30 a.m. and 9:35 a.m., respectively, will receivea dry-fit commemorative t-shirt and finisher’s item.Registration for al l events opened on Oct. 1 atTroyTurkeyTrot.com. For both the 5K and 10K, the registrationfee is $30 through November 23. On Nov. 24, the lateregistration fee is $35, plus processing. Online registrationofficially closes Monday, Nov. 25. On Saturday, November 23, 2013, RensselaerElk’s Lodge 2073 will be holding their local hoopshoot tournament. The tournament will be heldat the Rensselaer boys and girls club,registration is at 9:45 A.M.This tournament is for boys and girls, ages 8-13 years old, using April 1, 2014 for the agecut off.For Example, if you are 7 years old, and will be

8 years old by March 31, 2014, you will be able to shoot in thetournament. If you are 13 years old, and will be 14 years oldby March 31, 2014 then you cannot shoot in the tournament.The age groups are 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13, in both the boysand girls group. You do not have to be related to an elk toshoot in this tournament. It is open to all boys and girls whoare in the age groups shown above.For those who have never shot in the tournament, I would liketo let you know that this is not a basketball game. It is shootingfrom the foul line. The 8-9 year olds shoot from 4 feet in frontof the foul line. All the others shoot from the foul line. Firstyou take 10 shots, and then 15 shots, for a total of 25 shots.The winners in each age group will go on to representRensselaer Elks in the district tournament, which will be heldat a latter date, competing against the winners of the otherlodges in our district. There are 4 other tournaments afterthe district tournament that you have a chance to advanceto. They are, the east regional, the state, the tri-state, andfinally, the National Hoop Shoot Tournament, where you willcompete against the winners from all over the country. Thewinners of the National Tournament will get their name inscribedin the Basketball Hall of Fame.You see what you have a chance of doing. But first, you haveto participate in our local tournament, and win. You do nothave to be a basketball player to participate in the hoop shoottournament. You just have to be the right age, and want tohave fun.If at all possible, please bring a copy of your birth certificatewith you. Olivia Logue, RensselaerCounty 4-H member anddaughter of ChristopherLogue and Bernie Wiesen ofJohnsonville is the recipientof the 4-H Lohnes Award.The Lohnes Award is acitizenship/sportsmanshipaward sponsored by BobLohnes of Schaghticoke.The award recognizes anoutstanding seniorRensselaer County 4-HHorse project member.Olivia is active in both theStablemates and Wild Things 4-H Clubs. Olivia has participatedin all aspects of the horse program for 13 years. There isn’tanything in the horse program she has not tried or been reallyinvolved with from riding and showing to educational eventssuch as Horse Bowl, Communications and Hippology. Olivia hasparticipated in horse events at the county, state and nationallevel. Olivia was on the 2012 NYS Horse Communication teamand the 2011 NYS Hippology Team and competed at the National4-H Roundup in Kentucky both years. Additionally, Olivia wasa Teen Representative from 2010-12 on the New York StateHorse Education Committee. She co-coached the novice horsebowl county team this year and was helpful behind the scenesat club and county events playing a more active role in sharingher knowledge and assisting with the operation and facilitationof events. Olivia is currently a senior at Hoosic Valley HighSchool.The Lohnes Awardee is nominated and selected by the membersof the 9 different 4-H Horse Clubs in Rensselaer County. STORY DINNERS AT GILEAD CHURCH

October 18, 2013 featured our own Glenn Hayner, with fun,frolic and seriousness. Glenn’s presentation was fresh andinspiring! You never know when that man gets up there whathe will do, but it is never a disappointment! Glenn is filled withLove and he willingly shares his love for God and man in wayssome of us only wish we could display. A Halloween poem waswritten by Andy Kazukenus, a frequent guest at our monthlyStory Dinner’s, read by Kat. Marion Daus surprised us, withher willingness to get up front and read a poem she had writtenyears ago from her journal; and last, but certainly not least,Leonard Flath came on board with a newspaper article writtennearly a century ago, about a woman his family had knownfrom Germany that came to the U.S. It was an amazing storyof simple day to day life chronicled in this story. Oh, how wetake just throwing soiled clothing in the washer and walkingaway until it is done! Amongst many other chores! The nightwas lightened up with the hilarious story of “How to give a cata pill”, it was side splitting for those of us that have tried! WEhad a smaller crowd than usual, but even with a lowerattendance, the company was still fascinating, the food wasdelicious and plentiful, and our fundraising for “WoundedWarriors, ELCA World Hunger, Damien House and Gilead’s “Body& Soul” Pantry went very well!

On Sunday, November 17, 2013, the Nassau and StuyvesantReformed Churches will focus on Isaiah 65 and the Gospel ofLuke 21:5-19. Both Scriptures speak about our God as apowerful God, the One God whom we believe is fully revealedin Christ Jesus. The Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen, in thesermon titled “Our Great God,” will speak to the new heavensand new earth, which the prophet Isaiah foresees as headdresses the people of Israel who were struggling aftercaptivity in Babylon. Further, Rev. Van Kampen will share Jesus’warnings that we know not what the future holds, but we mustlive with confidence in the present age because we know thatGod holds the future. Even in the present age, with all its trialsand tribulations, we should bear witness to the loving purposesof God with us and his steadfast encouragement andstrengthening. Katie Harrington of Troy, a student in the Dental Hygieneprogram at Hudson Valley Community College, representedthe college at the Empire Conference for the Dental Hygienists’Association of State of NY, held on Long Island, Nov. 1-3.Harrington was one of four senior students representing thecollege’s Dental Hygiene program in the conference’s studenttable clinics competition. Along with student partner BethanyBerzal, the pair came in second place for its presentation,Effects of the Hookah on Oral Health.Table clinics are a competitive educational presentation wherestudents share information and research on a particular topicrelevant to their field.Both Hudson Valley student teams in the competition took homeprizes in the competition, which saw them vying against DentalHygiene students from other college programs across the state.
