If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to read Fraternity by Diane Brady. e coverpassage reads: In 1968, a visionary priest recruited 20 black men to the College of theHoly Cross and changed their lives and the course of history.at visionary priest is Father John Brooks, S.J., President of the College of the Holy Cross

from 1970-1994 and Trustee of St. Sebastian’s School from 1994 until his death on July 2,2012, just two weeks shy of his 89th birthday.

In the volume of Fraternity he presented to me in January, Father Brooks wrote thesewords: Bill, A Good Holy Cross story! Enjoy the read! Fr. John Brooks, S.J.

His focus was where it always was: on the school he served, never on himself.Current Holy Cross President, Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., struck a most responsive

chord at the funeral when he shared that he had asked Father Brooks to bless him with hiscourage, his wisdom, and his vision, for these strengths are high among the many invaluablegis Father Brooks bestowed upon St. Sebastian’s School throughout his 18 years of mostdistinguished service to our Board of Trustees.

We oen remind our students that the essence of life is in relationships and that no matterhow mighty the struggles may be, we always and forever have access to the two most powerfulforces in the universe: God and people through whom God works. at our Lord workedpowerfully through Father Brooks is abundantly clear to all who knew him and so loved him.May our humble servant of the truth and most gracious and loving mentor rest in heaven, andmay we honor him by resolving to become ever more fully men and women of courage,wisdom, and vision.

~~~In this issue, we celebrate the brilliant manner in which we completed our year of
Courage, a year marked by extraordinary senior class leadership, fabulous college placement,stellar scholastic, artistic, and athletic achievement, and the opening of our beautiful newScience/Math/Library Center, which features state of the art laboratories, classrooms, projectrooms, and gorgeous spaces dedicated to loving grandparents, Barb and Jim McKinlay, and tooutstanding Assistant Headmaster and Dean of Studies, Mike Nerbonne, who, by the way, isthe reason that Father Brooks joined our Board of Trustees.
We also pay tribute to Alumni Reunion Weekend led by beloved mentors, Bishop JohnBoles ’47 and Monsignor Al Contons, and to the joy of Commencement Day amplified byexcellent speakers, Immaculée Ilibagiza, John Donovan ’12, Sean Frazzette ’12, and Board ofTrustees President, Jim Elcock ’77.
Enjoy the read!~~~
I thank our students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, siblings, trustees, alumni,spouses, and friends for your prayers, and for all that you do to advance our most importantmission of pursuing truth through faith and reason. Please visit your School whenever youcan. It will be my great pleasure and distinct honor to give you the grand tour.
anks again for everything. May God continue to bless you all.
Headmaster’s Address
May we pray together one more time as aClass:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to theHoly Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now,and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
~~~My mother is the constant in my life; she isalways there for me...My father is the strongestperson I know...my mom always picked me up;she always said she was just two minutes away...

Just a few of the many details you have shared fromthe podium about your adoring, self-sacrificingparents. e love, devotion, guidance, support, and tenthousand other gis that they and your siblings andgrandparents and other relatives have showered uponyou to bring you to this proud moment could never bemeasured, nor could your tremendous gratitude everbe adequately expressed. Last week, Alumni BoardPresident, Patrick Hegarty ’89, shared with you that hisfather refers to St. Sebastian’s as e best thing that everhappened to us. What a succinct proclamation of thetruth that our School includes and seeks to strengthenthe whole family. is is your day, but it’s their day, too.Please rise, turn to face your families, find them withyour eyes, and clap your hands.

~~~
is spring, one of you, who served in a schoolconnected right away with a little red-headed boy. Atthe end of that first day, your supervisor was shockedto hear you refer to the lad as a smart kid, as no othereducator had seen his promise. And I thought: Gee, Iwonder where you learned that approach! Could itbe that you had gained inspiration from your St.Sebastian’s teachers who live the wisdom articulatedby Goethe:
Treat people as if they are what they ought to beand you help them become what they are capableof being.
Your truly great – and I mean great – teachers,coaches, advisors, moderators, and mentors havemodeled and demanded the best virtues, challengingyou to summit ever-rising peaks of excellence andsupporting you every inch of the way up. ey haveloved you well, and they will forever. Please rise, turnto your right, face your mentors, and express yourgratitude.
~~~You gentlemen and parents of the Class of 2012

have dedicated an exquisitely beautiful place of honorin our newly expanded library to your belovedAssistant Headmaster and Dean of Studies, Mr.Nerbonne, and well you should have, for yourdynamic leader of extraordinary pietas, virtus, andfortitudo, intelligence, energy, and integrity, who

“Success does in-deed start withyou. No school cancall itself a greatschool until peerpressure becomesa positive force,and you gentle-men have ensuredthat the positivereigns supreme.”

loved you first, exemplifies the spirit of St. Sebastian’sat our very best. May we, once again express ourgratitude to Mr. Nerbonne, our exemplar of dignitasand gravitas.

~~~Aer the Nerbonne Study dedication ceremony,
as we made our way up to the Chapel to listen to yourservice reports, I asked one of you what you thought Ishould mention at your Commencement, and youoffered immediately and with more than a littleenthusiasm:
Leadership! Our class has shown greatleadership ... and I guess one other thing: youguys got me to speak here.
Leadership! Trulygreat leadership indeed!We all know it, and wethank God and we thankyou for it.
And, yes, we did getyou to speak here – everyone of you – and whatbeautiful things we haveheard you say!
In your CorporateChapel address, one ofyou told the story ofhaving been stopped onthe street by a confusedBoston policeman, whoasked: What’s going on at that place? Why doeseveryone love St. Sebastian’s so much? Reflecting onhis questions, you shared with us:
ere’s something more here...this is a Schoolworthy of investing our full selves.
And you added:Success starts with the Senior Class and ismultiplied when the underclassmen get onboard.
Success does indeed start with you. No school cancall itself a great school until peer pressure becomes apositive force, and you gentlemen have ensured thatthe positive reigns supreme. at the underclassmenapprehend the beauty, the truth, and the transformingpower of your contributions has been evinced by theirbehavior all year and was celebrated last Friday by atrio of seventh graders upon their return from a vitallyimportant Dunkin Donuts run. When asked theiropinion of your class, they sang out sonorously – inthree part harmony: Great Leadership!
our younger students look up to you; they needyou, and you respond the only way you know how –
freely and fully, from your pure, pure hearts. Andyou connect deeply off campus as well! In yourservice presentations, more than one of you offeredthat a young charge had looked you in the eye andproclaimed: You’re the older brother I never had.
Love God, work hard, and take good care ofanother... e essence of life is in relationships…A brotherhood of Arrows.
How oen have we heard you punctuate yourspeeches with these and other loy refrains?
one of you offered this memorable sentence:Everything we do develops or ruins ourcharacter.
Talk about taking the gi of life seriously andaccepting responsibilityfor living it well! Nowthat’s leadership!
one of you, who hadworked with multiplyhandicapped youngpeople, shared theseobservations:Everybody deserves anopportunity to pursuehappiness...everybodydeserves to be caredfor...they add value.
What wisdom ariseswhen soul connects with
soul in service! We can only hope that our world’sleaders and voters may be so informed and inspired.
How fitting that we recognize leadership in thisyear in which we have chosen to focus on Courage,for, clearly, the two are inextricably linked, and bothare matters of the heart.
Solve metus! Shouts heroic Aeneas, exhorting histroops. Solve metus! Release fear. Let go of anxiety.
Any number of luminaries have commented onthe connection between courage and fear. MarkTwain asserts:
Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, notabsence of fear.
Plato offers this slant: Courage is knowing what to fear.
Which brings us to one of the most complex andchallenging concepts in our faith – Fear of the Lord,one of the seven gis of the Holy Spirit, which issometimes referred to as Holy Awe.
When it was evening, the boat was far out on thesea and He was alone on the shore. en Hesaw that they were tossed about while rowing,
I submit to you that if ouronly fear is fear of
disappointing God, we willhave courage to face
whatever must be faced, andI say more: it is the fear of
the Lord that will strengthenour resolve.
for the wind was against them. But at once Hespoke with them, “Take courage, it is I, do not beafraid!” (Mark 6: 47-48a, 50b)
Take Courage. What do we take? If we take apitch, we let it go. How hard is that to do? Take abreak. Take it easy. Take one; it’s free. What a simpletask it is to take! Courage,it seems is there for thetaking if…if we feelthrough faith the comfortand support and almightypower of our awesomeGod. As one good friendhas shared with me, and I,in turn, have shared withyou, there is a three stepformula of truth: I can’t.God can. So I’ll let Him.
I submit to you that ifour only fear is fear ofdisappointing God, wewill have courage to face whatever must be faced, andI say more: it is the fear of the Lord that willstrengthen our resolve.
of all the powerful statements St. John of theCross makes in his masterpiece, e Dark Night of theSoul, this gem stands preeminent for me:
Holy Awe sustains and deepens the virtues.
How ironic: e virtue of courage is maintainedand strengthened by holy awe or fear of the Lord, so
we look upon St.Sebastian and all themartyrs as fearful menand women. And wecome to see that it wasfear that inspired St.Justin to comfort hisfriends, who were aboutto be martyred along withhim with these words:Just remember, they cankill us, but they can’t do usany real harm.
As long as our onlyfear is fear of displeasing God, we’re going to be justfine, as asserted in the Book of Sirach.
Lively is the courage of those who fear the Lord, forthey put their hope in their Savior. (Sirach 34:13)
In September, I stood at this very spot and spokethese very words:
My hope and expectation is that each of us willread, write, pray, reflect, and speak on courageand so gain a more comprehensive individualand collective understanding of the virtue and adeeper commitment to living lives of courage.
And today, I thank you for making this dreamcome true.
It’s all over, isn’t it? e last game of your lastseason is over. You’re champions. A flag bearer and athrong of students have rushed the field, moms anddads embrace, players hug and cry and li their coachhigh upon their shoulders. It’s all over, this gloriousday in the sun. It’s all over, or so it seems until one ofyou shouts: Let’s finish it. And the whole team linesup for post-game, post St. Sebastian’s career sprints.And on you run and run and run with the joy of youryouthful hearts bursting and blossoming into smileswider than the ocean.
You have all run so on other fields, in otherrealms stride for sacred stride.
Just keep going. Let’s finish it. Let’s go on tocollege and love God, work hard, and take good careof one another there. Let’s finish it. Let’s pursue thetruth through faith and reason no matter howaggressively secular professors, fellow students, or the
school culture may be. Let’s finish it. Let’s get out intothe world and engage ourselves in meaningful workthat will make this planet a much better place. Let’sfinish it. Let’s devote ourselves to advancing a world-view that seeks to guarantee a full respect for everyable bodied and handicapped, healthy and dyingsacrosanct life from conception to natural death. Let’sfinish it. Let’s embrace fully our vocations, which formost will be as husbands and fathers. Let’s finish it.Let’s be true leaders in our families and in ourcommunities. Let’s finish it. Everything we dodevelops or ruins our character. Let’s finish it. Let’slearn as though we’ll live forever. Let’s live as thoughwe’ll die tomorrow. Let’s finish it. e essence of life isin relationships. Let’s finish it. You’re the brother Inever had. Let’s finish it. Holy awe sustains anddeepens the virtues. Let’s finish it. Let’s strive forheaven. Let’s finish it.
And please know that no matter how many timesyou fall, your gracious and loving God will run tomeet you every time you turn to Him, and pleasereturn to us oen – in sorrow or in joy, and we’ll behere ready to greet you with hearts and arms wideopen. is is your School. We are your people. Welove you. Arrows forever. Saecula saeculorum.
Go now in peace. Let’s finish it. Shalom! n
Board President’s Address
Fellow Trustees, Headmaster Burke, com-mencement speaker Immaculée Ilibagiza,Faculty, Staff, family and friends, and most of
all the Class of 2012, good morning and welcome.Abley, Carroll, Clerkin, Connors, Conway,
DelMonte, Doherty, Donovan, Elcock, Fenney, Foyer.e list will continue for another eight names andthen you would have my seventh grade home room.
Your first question is why would anyoneremember that roster? Well, you need only to guesswho sitting among you was my homeroom teacher.Yes, our very own Mr. Dan Williams ’64, who wasalso our seventh grade history teacher, was adamantthat by the end of week two we would all know eachothers’ names and be able to take our own attendanceevery morning. Couple that with the 44 prepositionsthat Mr. York had us memorize in seventh gradeEnglish, also by end of week two!
I ask you all to think of your very first days at St.Sebastian’s and how overwhelming it was.Gentlemen, look how far you have come!
My first introduction to the Class of 2012 was latelast August. I had a meeting with Headmaster Burkeat the School and when I arrived, I noticed a lot ofactivity on the football field. In particular, 60 or soyoung men were running around with telephonepoles. Honestly, I thought Jack Doherty ’62, ourBusiness Manager, had rented out our field to the jail
down the street for some sort of remedial training aspart of a work release program. Fortunately, Mr.Burke and Mr. Sullivan set the record clear that thiswas a well-planned, well organized Class of 2012bonding session.
My formal introduction to the Class of 2012 waslast September 9 at our opening Assembly. I am surenone of us will ever forget meeting Travis Roy andreading his book. Travis, as well as ImmaculéeIlibagiza, speak to this year’s theme of courage. esetwo individuals remind us that regardless of howmuch we learn in the classroom, perhaps the bestteachers in life are those who have experienceddiversity, hardship, tragedy, as well as love, and canshare their stories with us. Immaculée, I look forwardto listening to your commencement address today.
ere is no more important day in our School’scalendar than graduation. ese commencementexercises and your graduation validate our existenceand our mission. You join the ranks of our 2,800alumni who have all stood before you. Yourgraduation reaffirms all of your successes, as well asthe trials and tribulations that you have personallygone through, and the extraordinary hard work,laughter, and tears that you have all shared withfamily and friends, your beloved teachers, and yourfellow classmates along the way!
“Your graduationreaffirms all ofyour successes, aswell as the trialsand tribulationsthat you have per-sonally gonethrough, and theextraordinaryhard work, laugh-ter, and tears thatyou have allshared with familyand friends, yourbeloved teachers,and your fellowclassmates alongthe way.”
We are incredibly proud of you. ough yourdays of sitting in a classroom or competing on a fieldat St. Sebastian’s are over, your relationship with theSchool will last forever. As our youngest alumni, weunderstand how busy your lives are. At the end ofcommencement exercises this morning, when you arewalking down the aisle in the time honored traditionof saying goodbye and thanking the faculty andadministrators with handshakes, hugs, and tears,remind yourself that the relationships you have madeover the past four to six years aren’t ending today.Rather, they are relationships that will last a lifetime.We at St. Sebastian’s want to hear from you. We wantto stay in touch with you and continue to support youin all that you do.
Your parents and family have made tremendoussacrifices to send you to St. Sebastian’s. You owe it notonly to yourselves, but to them to stay in touch withthe School and with all of your fellow classmates andtheir families.
As President of the Board of Trustees, it is myresponsibility to encourage each member of the Classof 2012 to continue to live the mission of St.Sebastian’s no matter where the future takes you bykeeping in mind that:
“e ideal St. Sebastian’s graduate will be a moraland just person, a gentleman of courage, honorand wisdom, a lifelong learner who continues togrow in his capacity to know, to love, and to serveGod and neighbor.”
As I conclude my remarks today, I would like toshare with you some words from country music artistLee Ann Womack in her song entitled, I Hope YouDance. I would like you to think of these lyrics as youmove on from St. Sebastian’s and begin the next phaseof your life, hoping that you will always stay engagedand never stay on the sidelines. I quote:
“I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger.
May you never take one simple breath for granted,
God forbid love ever leaves you empty handed.
I hope you still feel small when you stand besidethe ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens.
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance,
Keynote Address
It is a great joy to be here. It is a little bit emo-tional because I remember you great guys fromfour years ago. You were younger, and now you
have grown muscles. You have grown taller and Ihave grown shorter. It is a great joy to be here, to cel-ebrate with you your accomplishments. And, beingwith you, I can’t help thinking of my brothers. As Imay have told you the last time I was here, Vianneywas just your age when he went to Heaven.
Aer the genocide, I realized that it’s not just ourbiological families who are our families. We havefamilies in the world. We all come from the sameFather, God. If we truly accept God, have the courageto accept God, then we are all brothers and sisters. So,in you I see my younger brothers and I am trulyhappy from my heart.
What makes me even happier is when I saw yououtside with your parents and friends earlier today. Icould feel your spirits, the humility in you. I can smellyour future – your great future – because you’re justgreat guys. I can feel your values, and who you are,and what you have accumulated in this past year. Itshows today. I am so very proud of you as a sister.
I speak to many schools, and when I saw you, Ithink you may be among the best to whom I havespoken. Again, I can just feel it.
e genocide was a horrible thing to go through.We all go through something. I’m sure even at your
young age you’ve gone through things that have hurtyou. And, sometimes you hold onto those things. Atany rate, the genocide was a horrible thing, but ittaught me some important lessons. I don’t know howI would have learned them if not for what I wentthrough.
First, I learned that God is real and that this life isonly a blink compared to eternity, so I believe inforgiveness. Before the genocide I used to think,“Well, you can forgive somebody who says somethingbad to you, but not someone who is trying to killyou.” But I now know that forgiveness is possiblefrom what I have seen.
Another lesson I learned was the power of love –the love we show to one another. e little act ofkindness - picking up something and handing it tosomeone who needs it or just lost it – is so important.Genocide happened in our country because we failedto love. If we succeed in caring about the small things,then we can hope for peace in the world. It is such agood lesson to learn. It is possible to have peace if wetruly believe in God and love one another.
As you heard from your great Headmaster, thegenocide happened in 1994. I was a student like you,but a little bit older, when I went home from school tocelebrate Easter with my family, who was Catholic.We had a great time.
“...I want to re-mind you to havethe courage totruly believe whatyou believe andpractice it. Believein God, rememberwho he is... Dowhat is right inthe eyes of God.”
I shall never forgot the day it started. It wasWednesday, April 7. My brother, who had justfinished his master’s degree, came to my room,pushed open the door, and told me that thepresident of the country had died. I rememberjumping out of my bed and putting on clothes. Istayed in those clothes for the next four months.
I went outside and saw my parents. ey wereworried. We did not know what was going tohappen to our tribe because we were not involved inthe country. our government, as a show of power,didn’t allow it. But, we didn’t think they would everkill us. ey spoke about it, but we didn’t see howthey could put it into action.
By the second day, many people gatheredoutside our home to ask my parents what to do. Itwas a moment that taught me to always stand up forwhat was right. My parents cared so much about ourentire village. It all hit me when I saw so manypeople coming to my father, asking him what to do.I was wondering why they chose my father, why notsomebody else in the village. But, they trusted himbecause he cared for our people. He showed thatcourage up to the last moment of his life.
I remember the day we separated. He had arosary in his hand and gave it to me. He then spoketo everyone who had gathered, saying:
“If the government wants to kill us, they will doit because they have the means. But if it is only afew people who have planned this, they won’t doit because we will remain strong. We shallprotect ourselves. However, if the governmentplanned this, then maybe we should take thismoment God has given us to repent our sins sowe can go to heaven.”
I remember thinking that he should be tellingthe people to run away, not how to die. And Iremember that everyone there listened to his wordsand took a silent moment to repent their sins, as Iwas doing in my own heart. In that group of 10,000people, I was the only one who survived.
It was then that my father came to me and askedme to go hide at a neighbor’s house, who was fromthe other tribe. ose were the last words weexchanged before I went to the neighbor.
I have to say, not everyone is bad. one lesson mydad used to tell us:
“Make sure you don’t place people in boxes, nomatter how bad someone hurts you. If someonefrom that tribe, that country, that race, thatreligion has done you wrong, always rememberthat it was only one person, not everyone. Make
Headmaster Bill Burke’s Introduction ofImmaculée Ilibagiza
It is my great pleasure and true honor to introduce our esteemed speaker,Immaculée Ilabagiza. Born into a strong, loving Catholic family in beautifulRwanda, Immaculée had been a happy, successful university student when thehorrors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide sent her running for her life. For 91days, she and seven other women found sanctuary in a tiny cramped bathroomin a local pastor's house, as the crazed killers roamed the area, searching for herand other potential victims of her tribe. Entering the bathroom at a healthy,vibrant 115 pounds, she emerged weighing just 65 pounds to find that herparents and two of her brothers had been brutally murdered.
In her first book, Le To Tell, Discovering God Amidst the RwandanHolocaust, Immaculée takes us on the remarkable journey of her life before,during, and aer the genocide and shows how, by the grace of God andthrough fervent prayer, she eventually finds it possible, and in fact imperative,to forgive her tormentors and her family's murderers. A New York Times BestSeller, the book has been translated into seventeen languages.
Immaculée has written five additional books, and she has receivedhonorary doctoral degrees from e university of Notre Dame, Saint John'suniversity, Seton Hall university, Siena College and Walsh university. She hasreceived numerous humanitarian awards including: e Mahatma GandhiInternational Award for Reconciliation and Peace and the American Legacy'sWomen of Strength & Courage Award.
She has appeared on 60 Minutes and has recently signed a contract withMPower Pictures to produce a major motion picture about her story.
Regarded as one of world's leading speakers on peace, faith, andforgiveness, Immaculée has shared her universal message with worlddignitaries, school children, multinational corporations, churches, at retreats,and at large gatherings around the world. is past october, she gave testimonyto over 200,000 people in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Five years ago, when reading Le to Tell for the first time, I felt the tug ofthese incredibly strong forces: the compulsion to put her powerfully stirring,terribly beautiful treasure in the hands of every member of our St. Sebastian’sfamily, and the strongest desire to meet her and to have our community meether, too.
And so, thanks be to God, it all came to pass, and a tradition was born. Inthe summer of 2008, we assigned Le to Tell as our first ever All School Read,and, in September of that year, when you seniors were just beginning yourfreshman year, we welcomed Immaculée to address us in this Church.
As that summer of 2008 ebbed, a tsunami of excitement rose and rushed.one of our youngest students gave voice to all, informing his mother that hefelt as though he was about to meet a rock star. Expectations couldn’t havebeen higher.
And our Immaculée managed to exceed them all; so, if this is your firstencounter with her, get ready to have your life changed for the better forever.
No pressure, Immaculée!I have so many fond memories from her first visit, but this one endures
most vividly. I brought Immaculée to our Chapel to show her our windowhonoring John Vianney, the saint for whom her youngest brother had beennamed. overwhelmed by emotion, Immaculée reverently, lovingly placed herhand on the window.
St. John Vianney writes: e saints love everyone.Now, if loving everyone is a pre-requisite for canonization, I believe that
our speaker has more than satisfied the requirement.Please help me welcome Immaculée Ilibagiza.
I am here today because somebody from theother tribe was willing to have me in his home andbecause my dad trusted him.
e neighbor placed me in a three by four footbathroom with seven other women. I was told itwould be for three to four days. We ended up stayingin that bathroom three months, from April until July.
During that time many things happened. egovernment gave the order to kill everybody from mytribe. ousands were already dead as people went tostadiums and churches to kill everybody they couldfind. ey then started searching home by home tosee if anyone was hiding.
ey came to the home where we were hidingmany times to search. And, during those times, I hadvoices on each shoulder. one was telling me to openthe door, to end the torture. ey’re going to kill meanyway. e other was telling me not to open thedoor, to remember that there is a God. Ask him to
help. He is Almighty. He can do anything. ere’snothing impossible to the God Almighty.
I knew my next task was to believe truly in God. Iremember asking Him for a sign, “If you are here,don’t let them open the door to the bathroom.” And,they never did open that door. For me, it was a signthat God was there. I knew for sure God was therefrom all that I had seen and experienced in my heart.
once I started to take my faith seriously, once Iknew there was a God, then a voice inside of mereminded me what God wanted me to do – Hewanted me to love others.
But, I hated the killers so bad, and I thought I hada good reason to hate them. rough these wordsfrom our Lord’s Prayer, “…forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespassed against us,” I sooncame to realize the value of forgiveness. Anytime Iwent through that part, which I did about 200 timeseach day, I remembered that I was alive because ofGod - God who is Almighty, God who is in my heart,God who wants me to love others.
But, I still did not know how to forgive.en, the moment of understanding came while I
was meditating the rosary, in particular the partwhere Jesus is dying on the cross, when he said,
Let go of the anger andcontinue to love Me.”
at’s what I hung on to.In writing the book, Le to Tell, I got back to
God. I tried to honor Him as He is in the Bible, as ourchurch tells us.
In keeping with your school theme of courage, Iwant to remind you to have the courage to trulybelieve what you believe and practice it. Believe inGod, remember who He is. Honor yourcommitments in the light of God. If you are abrother, be a good brother. If you are a father, be agood father. Do what is right in the eyes of God.
He wants us to love one another, so let’s do it inthe truest way possible. When your heart is not thereand your intentions not loving, change them. You
have the capacity to care.When I met the man
who had killed my familyI could say that he trulydid not know what hewas doing. is man, whoused to be a great man,was now in prison withfood in his hair, unshavenfor six months. He waslost because of what hehad done, because he haddecided to hurt and kill
people.ose are the lessons I have learned through the
genocide.My dear younger brothers, I congratulate you for
this accomplishment. Remember to love another andbelieve in the one who made you. Honor Him. He isthere, He is real. Honor Mary. She is a most-lovingmother. Remember her. Pray and read spiritualbooks so you can feel your soul like you feel yourbody.
Valedictory Address
Graduates of St. Sebastian’s, Class of 2012,why does it matter that you came here, tothis School, of all places? Sure, the new Sci-
ence Center, turf fields, carpeted locker rooms, etc.are all nice things, but they are just the norm in ourprep school universe. St. Sebastian’s is not unique inthis regard; however, you all know as well as I thatthis school is special, that it operates on anotherlevel of education, higher than any of its ISL compa-triots. Perhaps it is something in the air as Mr.Nunan claims, although all I smell is the inside of ahockey bag, or something in the water, maybe that’swhy it’s always warm and brown; either way, St. Se-bastian’s is different than all the others. is Schoolteaches you what it means to be a man of faith,honor, and reason. Now, however boys, trainingcamp’s over. It’s our turn to embody these traits andbecome true Arrows, men who seek to protect oth-ers, to practice strong morals, and to prevail againstall odds. I believe these are the specific roles of a St.Sebastian’s man.
St. Sebastian’s men take good care of one another;they are protectors. Defending loved ones from harmand suffering while risking personal safety is just partof the creed at this School. St. Sebastian’s is abrotherhood, and the fact is we don’t let people hurtour brothers. For example, homecoming this year wasan amazing day, the fans in Henry’s Corner were
loud, the score of the football game was close, whichwas exciting because our opponent was rival BelmontHill, and both of us were in the running for an ISLChampionship. unfortunately, in the final minutes,fate did not fall our way despite spectacular effortfrom the offensive squad, and we lost the game. As webegan to walk off the field, Belmont Hill fans begantaunting us with sweeping motions, indicating thatwe were the trash on the field. Without a secondthought, captain Austin Franchi ran up to those jerksand told them off. e immediacy of Austin’sresponse struck me especially because it was not outof anger at losing the game, but because something inhis blood boiled when he saw the enemy attacking histeammates, his friends, and his brothers. at’s in theSt. Sebastian nature, to defend our own. ultimately,any student could read a book about war or conflictsuch as the Aeneid, the Iliad, etc. and know that partof the reason the men survived was because of theuniting force of common plight; however, an Arrowknows that feeling without reading those books, thatbuzz in your gut telling you these are your brothers,the people you were born to love and protect. We arenot just students at any school; we are Arrows,members of the elite; so as we move forward, we mustremember that it is our duty as men to take good careof one another.
St. Sebastian’s men are moral and virtuous.Morality is simple and absolute; there is right andwrong, good and evil. Socrates agrees that morality isnot relative when he professes:
“A system ofmorality which isbased on relativeemotional values is amere illusion, athoroughly vulgarconception whichhas nothing sound init and nothing true.”
ere are few whomaintain that morality isabsolute; our world haslearned to justify almostanything using arelativistic philosophy.However, because of ourSt. Sebastian’s educationwe know that morality islike DNA, an engraving on our minds and a fiber ofour souls. How do we know this for sure one mightask? I myself questioned this until Mr. Nunan set mestraight in his Western Philosophy class. on oneparticular day, the class was debating a certainsituation: whether it was abortion, murder, orsomething else entirely, I can’t remember thespecifics. What I do remember is one student saying
that morality is relative to each specific situation andMr. Nunan replying, “No it isn’t. You’re wrong,” with acalm smile, as if he had been waiting for someone tosay that very line. at student of course was shocked
by this but attempted toargue his point againfrom a differentperspective, but met thesame response, “No,morality isn’t relative.You’re wrong.” While atthe time, I thought thishilarious because I knewMr. Nunan would pushhim until he caved in, itwasn’t until much later inthe year that I realizedmorality, while complexupon examination, isinherently simple. It hasto be absolute and cannotbe relative. Not manyschools still teach thatabsolute philosophy of
virtue; in that way, St. Sebastian’s is very special andutterly unique. In the future, misguided souls willcross your path, bere of the golden compass that isvirtue, and they will admonish you for yourgoodness. However, our duty as moral men is notonly to avoid the temptation of joining them (for thebase pleasures are always alluring), but also to steer
them back onto the path of righteousness, to helpthem once again find the way. ultimately, gentlemen,knowing absolutemorality is as natural asbreathing or blinking;however, maintainingthat morality will be oneof the greatest tests ofmanhood. eacceptance andcompletion of thatchallenge will become themagnum opus among thegreatest deeds of your life.
St. Sebastian mendon’t stop fighting; they don’t lie down. Wheneverything has failed, and you are on the brink ofquitting, know that this duty forces you to move on.e ultimate image of a man’s dedication toprevailing in my mind is Aeneas in Book II as the cityof Troy burns to the ground. Vergil writes:
“Iamque iugis summae surgebat Lucifer Ideaducebatque diem, Danaique obsessa tenebantlimina portarum, nec spes opis ulla dabatur.
Cessi et sublato montes genitore petivi. And nowLucifer, the loy morning star, was rising above
the yoke of Mount Idaand was leading the dayforward, the Danaanswere holding their gaze onthe besieged thresholds ofthe gates, and not anyhope of help was given.And having departed,with his father raised onto his shoulders he soughtthe mountains.”
at is the epitome of a St. Sebastian man, onewho carries his father on his shoulder and leads hisson with the other hand, clearing them free from thewreckage of a burning city, delivering them over theyoke of the mountains to the safety of a new dawn.Aeneas has just lost his wife, many of his comrades,and his homeland to the fires of Greek treachery, yetdespite his hardship, he never falters as he deliversthe remnants of his family forth from the blaze.
When you walk through the valley of the shadow ofdeath, enduring the greatest hardships, you have tokeep trudging forward even if the ground crumblesbeneath your feet. You have to survive; it’s not anoption or a choice. “is is what the good guys do.ey keep trying. ey don’t give up,” said the fatherto his son in e Road by Cormac McCarthy. ismessage rang true for methroughout wrestlingseason. oen I wouldfind myself in matches Ihad no chance ofwinning. However, whenI did face an opponentagainst whom I couldstand in a fair fight, Imade it a priority to neverget pinned. At the ISLTournament, in one ofthe last matches of mycareer, I was pittedagainst a Belmont Hillwrestler to whom I hadlost earlier in the season.at match was close, so Iknew that this one wouldbe a dogfight. Honestly,he was the better wrestlerand it showed during thatfinal match; however, I refused to roll over. I wouldnot let him pin me, even though my stomach waschurning with the sickness of exhaustion and I wasgasping for breath. e final score of the match, Ithink, was 3-1, incredibly close considering he sosoundly beat me. I stood up, shook his hand, walkedover to my dad who was watching, and he said thefamiliar phrase, “Hey, you hung in there. I’m proud.”Although it would have been nice to beat that guyand advance, I was not discouraged by the defeat,rather proud that I hadn’t folded or concededanything. ultimately, St. Sebastian’s has endowed youwith this very same prevailing spirit so rememberthat you are the good guys and good guys don’t evergive up.
As Mr. Burke has said countless times:“I cannot promise you lives without illness orinjury, but I can promise you good lives as long asyou treat every man and woman as a beingworthy of the same love and respect you believeyourself to be worthy of.”
I, too, cannot promise you lives free from pain orsuffering, but I know that all of you are men ofendurance, who understand the concept that while
life might knock you down seven times, you have toget up eight. I can also guarantee that your role as aman, along with faith in God, will allow you toovercome any strife you may encounter. ultimately, Itell you all of this not so that you may fear life or thesuffering to come, but so that you may embrace it bypursuing Truth in the manner, which you always
have, through faith andreason with justice andthe good of others inmind.
In closing, I wouldlike to read a brief excerptfrom Dostoevsky’s eBrothers Karamazov,which Mr. Lynch sharedwith us on the last day ofclass.“And even though we maybe involved with the mostimportant affairs, achievedistinction or fall intosome great misfortune—allthe same, let us neverforget how good we oncefelt here, all together,united by such good andkind feelings as made us,
too for the time that we loved the poor boy,perhaps better than we actually are.”
I will never forget this day of monumentalachievement, the feelings of joy and pride, thecamaraderie, the laughter. You all are my brothers, myclosest family and friends. St. Sebastian’s has forged usinto men of faith, honor, and reason; we must use thetalents developed here to change the world for thebetter. Finally, thank you for making every minute ofmy time here at St. Sebastian’s so special. Mom andDad, thank you for giving me the opportunity toattend such a sacred school, where I have found asecond home and the greatest people. Salutatory Address
“Does anyone ever realize life while they liveit...every, every minute?" Emily Gibbs asks thisfamous, albeit grammatically incorrect, ques-
tion in ornton Wilder’s play Our Town, emphasiz-ing the truth that many people simply go throughthe motions of life, unappreciative of the beauty andgoodness that surround them.
Mr. Burke, Father Arens, Mr. Elcock, Ms.Ilibagiza, members of the Board of Trustees,members of the faculty, parents, guests, and, ofcourse, fellow graduates of the Class of 2012:
For the past seven to two years, we have allwritten essays, read books, and solved problems in aneffort to sit where we are today and proudly declareourselves St. Sebastian’s graduates. With the hecticlifestyle of a high school student, though, we oen donot have a chance to look around and enjoy whatGodliness is here. And so, today, I suggest we do ittogether. Let us relive and relish high school, one lasttime. Let us remember both the triumphs and thedefeats, for one does not mature without the aid ofsuccess and failure. Let us look back, and “realize life.”
We all entered here, I am sure, with differentexpectations of the School. Some, from an innerodium for school, saw a future of deadeningdidacticism. others, from the guidance of brothersand friends, saw a future of good times withschoolwork on the side. And others still, from
personal perseverance, saw a platform for greatness,whether it be in the classroom, arts center, or athleticarena. Whatever the case be for each individual, weeach saw it through to the end. And, mostimportantly, we each strived for and achievedexcellence and success.
But, I contend, this excellence did not come fromthe individual. Mr. Burke oen quotes AbrahamLincoln, saying:
“I am a success today because I had a friend whobelieved in me and I didn't have the heart to lethim down.”
I would like to expand that to our class as a whole.Each and every one of us is a success today. Notbecause of a grade we may have received on a Mr.Drummond essay or a mousetrap car. Not because ofa performance we may have had on stage or a piece ofart we may have created. Not because of a game wemay have excelled in or an award we may have won.Rather today, we are all graduates, all successes,because we each have parents, teachers, and mostimportantly, sixty-three brothers that believed in us.And we didn’t have the heart to let them all down. Isay this not to demean the individual work we all putin, for it is impressive in itself. But rather, I say this topay homage to the creed we each live by: Love God,work hard, and take good care of one another. iscreed emphasizes the attitude of a Seb’s man. We go to
“Let us relive andrelish high school,one last time. Letus remember boththe triumphs andthe defeats, for onedoes not maturewithout the aid ofsuccess and fail-ure. Let us lookback, and ‘realizelife.’”
confession and Eucharistic Adoration to confess ourinadequacies, humble ourselves before God, and askfor future guidance toward the successes in which wewill we revel. We work hard in the classroom, weightroom, and athletic arena to build a stalwart wall ofteamwork. And, in my opinion best of all, we takecare of one another. Toillustrate this, I would liketo share an anecdote withyou today.
Early in the secondsemester, Mr. Lynchassigned our class aproject where we had tofilm a scene of Hamlet.Ryan Sanderson, PeteCimini, and I foundourselves two castmembers short of whatwas needed for ourproject’s completion. As aresult, we called AlexVenditti and GusGordon, who generouslygave up around six hours of their Sunday to help uswith a project that gave them no benefit in theclassroom. ey cared for us enough to work as if itwere their own project—a true testament to ourclass’s unity and dedication to one another.
It is in ways like this that our class has been oneof brothers, so together through all we face. As we
take this time to reflect and look backwards, think ofall the good that came from our unity. Personally, Iam reminded of our group’s success in so many ways.For sports, we could think of the football team,turning around from 2 and 6 to 6 and 2, led by agroup of seniors that had the heart and head for
victory. or we couldremind ourselves of thehockey season. six awards at the Massachusetts drama festival. Wealso applaud Malcolm Donaldson, who won a goldkey and silver medal in a national photographycontest. For service, our class dedicated themselves tonumerous projects, spearheading the San Miguelbackpack project for years as well as the final twoNew orleans trips. And in the academic realm, wecould hope for continuedsuccess in Robotics, as theteam this year set the goldstandard with their trip toworld’s in St. Louis.
We could alsoremember all of the goodtimes we shared as a Classand the mentors thatmade those times sogreat. For so long, greatmen and women taughtus the essentials of school.is is embodied in Mr.Schell’s classes, where heeloquently lectured about“this whole notion of theDrudge Report andWikiLeaks.” or Mr.Cleary’s class, wheremany of us learned that pounding the whiteboard ashard as possible makes a great story even greater.Some of us, namely myself, learned never to walkbackwards in the Physics lab during mousetrapseason, lest you wish to hear the frightening crack of awheel and a classmate’s scream. And one of us, whomay or may not be speaking later today, learnednever to fall asleep in religion class, unless you wantthe class to change the time on the clock, shut off thelights, and leave the room. In all seriousness though,those teachers mentioned as well as all the otherswere the greatest men and women of scholarship,service, character, and leadership we could have askedfor, and, on behalf of the class, I thank you allwholeheartedly.
overall, we may look back and think of thegrades, projects, and finals. But I do not think that iswhat realizing life holds as valuable. I ask that we lookback and smile at these group achievements—familialin an almost divine way—, as well as all the othersthat our Class took part in. During freshman year,our class moderator Mr. Eaton called our Class, “eworst in Seb’s history” as he struggled to takeattendance in class meeting. Well, Class of 2012, lookwhere we have come today. I believe, as I hope you alldo, that we can look back on our time at Seb’s, andhave our souls emanate happiness and pulse with
pride for our successes. We truly were brothers. Westood strong for one another and we had each other’sbacks in every aspect of high school life, whether it bemaking study guides for an entire class or helping ateammate up aer a hard fall. erefore, I would liketo thank each and every one of you for being betterthan I am in something, anything—for it is because of
you that I am honored tospeak here today. I wouldlike to thank Jeff, Anne,Peter, Catherine, andTessie for offering me ahome a little closer toschool. And last, butcertainly not least, Iwould also like to saythank you to Mom andDad for being my lovingsupport system and rolemodels for the pasteighteen years, as well asKatie and Emily for beingmy best friends andinspirations.
But now, our livesdiverge down differentpaths. Some are destined
to be the best and brightest at their colleges andchange the world in their own special ways. othersare prepared to hold the value and honor of beingstudent-athletes at premier universities. Either way,we are all moving forward, but not necessarilyonward. ere is a reason we see former Seb’sgraduates coming back to School every year. And no,it is not always for the free lunches. ere is a certainpride in being an Arrow. We all know that we havesixty-three brothers across the country, as well asthousands of other graduates that are linked to usdespite generational gaps. Yet before we head off intothe frightening abyss of real life, I would like to makeone more point.
Kurt Vonnegut once wrote:“I urge you to please notice when you are happy,and exclaim or murmur or think at some point,'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.’”
As I look around at the Class of 2012, the greatestClass in St. Sebastian’s history, I try to “realize life” asornton Wilder asks all people to do. I think of allthe great times we shared and the great friendshipswe formed. And I cannot help but think, “If this isn’tnice, I don’t know what is.”
ank you and God bless. n
When hiring, famous investor, Warren Buffett, asserts that helooks for three things: intelligence, energy, and integrity, andhe adds that if a candidate lacks the third quality, the first twowill kill you.
Happily, Mr. Nerbonne has all three strengths, and he hasthem in spades.
God made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure. Theseare the words of Eric Liddell, the Scottish runner celebrated inChariots of Fire, who won the 440 in the 1924 SummerOlympics in Paris. God made me fast. And when I run, I feelHis pleasure.
Well, God made Mr. Nerbonne smart, a powerfully beautiful,self-evident truth to which any student or colleague with thetemerity to engage him in debate can attest. A great studentall his life, Mr. Nerbonne had been flying through a PhD pro-gram in Classics at Harvard and had matriculated at BostonCollege Law School before feeling and responding to the callto serve at St. Sebastian’s School, where he fully engages andcompletely devotes his God-given superior intelligence to theservice of you, his beloved students. God made him smart,and surely Mr. Nerbonne must feel the Lord’s pleasure when
he employs his intelligence in calling his students to great-ness in mind, in body, and in spirit.
Energy! We all know and marvel at the truth that Mr. Ner-bonne lives the creed: Let me serve them all my days andnever count the cost. From well before sunrise until way afterdark, Mr. Nerbonne can be found at his post here in the li-brary, focusing his considerable powers on seeking and find-ing ways to help you young men establish and achieve theloftiest of goals in the classroom and everywhere else.
Some extraordinarily intelligent and energetic men haveyachts and mansions and other fancy things that money canbuy. Mr. Nerbonne has you, his students, and, thanks be toGod, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Integrity? Mr. Nerbonne’s supreme devotion to Jesus Christand to His Roman Catholic Church emanate from the core ofhis being. He loves God, and he loves God’s people. My hopefor each of you 63 young men is that you will find yourselfworking with a person for whom you have total respect andadmiration and in whom you have consummate faith, some-one like Mr. Nerbonne, who embodies the virtues of completefriendship as defined by Aristotle. If Mr. Nerbonne tells youthat something happened, then it happened, and everyoneknows it. When you come to Mr. Nerbonne with a problem,you can be 100 % certain that the last full measure of his over-the-top, excellent intelligence, energy, and integrity will bedevoted to arriving at a solution.
Today’s second reading is from St. Paul’s letter to the Ro-mans:
Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good;love one another with mutual affection.
We thank Mr. Nerbonne for honoring these words with the evi-dence of his life, and we thank you, the Class of 2012 and yourparents, for honoring Mr. Nerbonne:
Intelligence, energy, integrity,
Pietas, virtus, fortitudo
SENIOR CLASS GIFT
28 | ST. SEBASTIAN’S MAGAZINE Volume VII, Issue III
I would like to thank all of the senior parents who contributedso generously to this year’s class gift and to share with youthe comments I made to the seniors at Thursday morning’sceremony:
I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of the members ofthis great class, the class of 2012, and to congratulate you ona job well done in helping to plan and design this beautifulnew room.
I am especially grateful to the senior class members who as-sumed a leadership role in this design.
I know that all of you spent countless hours collaborating withour outstanding architect, Mr. Rob Olson, in designing andplanning this new space. The plaque which will soon housethe photo which we took this morning, the choice of the Latininscriptions on the plaque and on the chess tables for thishallway and the trophy case on the far wall – all of theseevince your devotion and influence, and reveal your commit-ment to one another and your desire to make this space a trulymemorable and remarkable monument to our time spent to-gether here over the past few years.
I am humbled by your choice of the three Latin words for theplaque:
Pietas, Virtus, Fortitudo.
I want to add three more of my own:
Non Sum Dignus.
The same three words spoken by the Roman centurion toJesus in the Gospel: “I am not worthy.”
I want to focus on just one of those three words, the first inthe series, Pietas. Pietas is a word in Latin which suggests aworld view which is outward looking, always focused on thegood of others.
This should serve as a reminder to all of us to strive to dis-cover God’s plan for us and to live out that plan according tohis will. During your years here, you have heard us speak somany times about the mission of this great School and the in-tegral role you play in living it out every day.
I was congratulated recently during the admissions season onthe success of St. Sebastian’s. When these particular parentspersisted in asking me for a definitive answer for the successof the school: is it the faculty, or the curriculum or these im-pressive new facilities? Acknowledging that all of these areessential components, I replied, the answer is easy: we havethe best kids. And when I look around this room this afternoonI know why we have the best kids.
I have been so blessed to live out my vocation at St. Sebast-ian’s and I am grateful to God for my friend and the best men-tor anyone could ever hope to have, Mr. Bill Burke. He is thereason for the success of this School and more importantly forour unwavering focus on producing young men of virtue andcharacter, men like you who will make the world a much betterplace.
Again thank you and God Bless. n
SENIOR CLASS GIFT
WWW.STSEBASTIANSSCHooL.oRG | 29
As a part of the Class of 2012, I can say on behalf of the entiregraduating class, that it was an easy decision to choose Mr.
Nerbonne as the recipient of our Senior Class Gift. The toughpart was deciding how we were going to honor him. It was dif-ficult to adequately portray a man we all admire, a man whosecountless hours of dedication, to this class in particular, havehelped shaped all of us into men of respect, intellect, andhonor - the qualities we all admire most in Mr. Nerbonne.
This gift serves only as a small token of our appreciation foreverything Mr. Nerbonne has done for us. It is our hope thatthis place is a reminder to the students who know Mr. Ner-bonne, and to help paint the picture to those students not asfortunate as us to have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Nerbonne,of the kind of man he is.
All of us here know that he is humble, and that big ceremonieshonoring his achievements are not what drive him to work themany hours and weekends that he does, but we hope that thisgift represents not only the dedication Mr. Nerbonne hasshown to the School as a whole, but that it helps manifest theclose bonds that members of the Class of 2012 have collec-tively forged with Mr. Nerbonne.
Mr. Nerbonne, we all owe you more than this gift, but thankyou for everything you have done for us. n
The 2012 Arrows varsity lacrosseteam’s goal was clear from the
beginning of the season. ey wanted towin the ISL Championship and hang abanner. under the leadership of seniorcaptains Jack Connolly, Stephen Brown,Sam Hodgson, and Sam Washburne, theteam was focused and united in theirefforts to take care of business one game ata time.
e season began with tryouts beforespring break in March. Aer a few days of
intense competition, the newest membersof the 2012 Arrows lacrosse team wereselected. With so much talent returningfrom last year’s squad, only six sophomoresmade the cut. Aer a well-deserved weekoff to begin vacation, the team arrived inthe small gym the second week of break tobegin double sessions. With some of thebest weather for double sessions in years,the Arrows were able to enjoy the sun andwork on their tans while improving theirgames and improving team chemistry.With scrimmages against Gould Academy,Winchester, Wellesley, and Dover-Sherborn, Coaches Stanton, Weihman, andKittler worked on introducing new plays
and giving the younger players valuableplaying experience. e scrimmages alsocreated a new challenge for the Arrows, asmultiple players got injured and had to sitout for the first few games of the season.Despite the setbacks, the Arrows keptworking to perfect their game in time forthe season opener against non-conferencefoe Phillips Exeter Academy.
on a cold and gray day, a talentedExeter squad travelled down to Needhamfor a matchup between two of the topteams in New England. Lack of possessionin the second half and too much time withthe man-down unit on the field made itdifficult for the Arrows to keep up withExeter, enabling them to defeat the Arrows5-4. Despite the loss, the defense,consisting of juniors Pat Healy and Briano’Malley, sophomore Connor Strachan,and senior goalie Jarrod Dillon, played welland limited Exeter’s high-powered offensefrom taking quality shots.
Learning from their mistakes in theExeter game and always working toimprove, the team travelled down toProvidence to take on perennial Rhode
Island contender Moses Brown. eArrows got on the board first 1:51 into thefirst quarter and didn’t look back, goinginto halime with a 7-1 lead. Moses Browncommitted 12 penalties during the game,and the Arrows took full advantage of theirmistakes. At the final horn, the scoreboardread 13-4 in favor of the Arrows, and theteam le the field feeling confident butknowing that there was still much room forimprovement. e Arrows received eightpoints from senior Sam Hodgson, fivepoints from senior Gordon Donnelly, and ahat trick from junior Dalton MacAfee. Atotal of nine different Arrows contributedeither a goal or an assist.
e following Saturday, the Arrowsmade the short drive to Dedham to begintheir ISL schedule against rival Nobles,where they were able to pull off an 8-7victory. Captain Jack Connolly gave histhoughts aer the game: “So far, the seasonhas gone pretty well for us. Nobles playedtough and it wasn’t our best game. It was awake up call for us, and showed us howgood the ISL as a whole will be this year.”
Not satisfied with the effort in theNobles game and realizing that there isalways room for improvement, a captain’spractice was called Easter Monday to workon the man up and man down units thatoen help decide the course of a game. eArrows practice leading up to the LawrenceAcademy game focused on winninggroundballs and playing at the team’s fullpotential.
Reinvigorated by the return of captainSteve Brown, who had been out with a footinjury, the Arrows played a solid game oflacrosse in their second ISL game againstLawrence Academy, with Brown pickingup a team high 8 groundballs in his seasondebut. e Arrows played well against aninferior team, and came away with a 10-1victory. Sam Hodgson led the way againwith 6 points, and Gordon Donnelly had 4goals. e defense played well and limitedthe Spartans to very few quality shots.
e Arrows continued to improve asthe season progressed, defeating BelmontHill at home 7-3. A week later the Arrowsalso defeated a very talented and well-coached Middlesex team. e defense of
Although it was not the bestperformance by the Arrows, they were ableto come away with the victory 6-5.
e next game away against Governor’sAcademy was the most exciting andinfluential of the season. Both teams hadno ISL League losses, which made thisarguably the biggest game of the season.e two ISL champion contenders played avery thrilling game. Many St. Sebastian'sstudents made the trip to Byfield to cheeron their fellow classmates. e Arrowsdefense once again remained strong;however, they were unable to produceenough offense to defeat Governor’s. eextremely close game ended as a 3-4 loss, avery low and rare score for a lacrosse game.
Despite a heartbreaking loss, theArrows continued to push forward, hopingto win out the rest of the season. Aerbeating ayer and Brooks handily, theArrows walked onto the field for their lastgame of the season at home againstRoxbury Latin. At the same time,Governor’s Academy, who was stillundefeated, played Middlesex, whose onlyloss was to the Arrows. Midway throughthe Arrow’s game, spectators in the crowdrevealed the news of Middlesex defeatingGovernor’s to the Arrows. is meant thatif the Arrows were to defeat Roxbury Latin,there would be a three-way tie for theLeague champions of the ISL between St.Sebastian's, Middlesex, and Governor’s.e Arrows, excited and motivated, wenton to dominated and win the game againstRL 15-1. Aer the game, the players,coaches, and fans rushed the field incelebration, reaching a goal that had beengiven at the beginning of the season. emoment was particularily awesome sincethe Arrows had not expected Middlesex tobeat Governor’s.
Atthe athletic awards ceremony, CoachStanton told the team to come up all atonce because they were a true team, doingeverything together. e team was proudto reach its goal and has high hopes forsimilar success in the future.
Twenty of St. Sebastian’s finest youngmen turned out to form the junior
e season started with a real drubbingat the hands of non-league opponent TaborAcademy at beautiful Kittansett Golf Club.e Arrows were not quite ready to handlethe windy conditions of this seasidemonster. Next up was a tri match withNobles and Middlesex. e outcome was atie with Nobles and a loss to Middlesex.However, some bright signs were emergingas Alejandro Soto was finding his game,Kevin Looney was regaining his sharpness,and Tommy Kelley was proving once againto be a very formidable opponent for all.Another tie with Nobles le the Arrowswith a 0-2-2 record aer four matches. efirst victory was against St. Mark’s School,but not without some anxious moments.With six matches in the teams were tied.Soto, Kelley, and Looney provided thevictories. out on the course, playing in the7 position, was newcomer Paul Keady. iseighth grader gave his waiting teammates asigh of relief when he signaled the victorysign as he walked off the ninth green. is
would prove to be a frequent happening, asPaul compiled a team best 14-2-3 seasonrecord. Week three of the season saw theArrows playing four matches in three days.is young and talented team wasemerging. With strong play from co-captains McGuirk and Kelley, key victoriesfrom Kevin Ginns, Kevin Looney, and BillyMcCarthy, continued steady play from Sotoand Keady, and a key victory by PatrickCiapciak in the Belmont Hill match, theArrows completed the week with 2victories, one loss, and one tie. Week fourwas a bit of a different story. Again fourmatches were played and the results, threelosses and one tie, le the Arrows with a 3-6-4 record. However, caving in was not atrait of this team. With strong leadershipfrom the two co-captains and the quiet,positive influence from seniors ChrisStadtler and Patrick Ciapciak (winner ofthe prestigious Sullivan Award foroutstanding sportsmanship), the Arrowscompiled 8 wins and 1 loss over the lastthree weeks of the season. e Arrowsjumped from eighth place to a tie for fourthin the League standings. During this stretcha few junior varsity players, Ryan McGuirk,Matt Barletta, Will Dufour, LukeWasynczuk, and Chris Rodowicz, foundtheir way to the varsity lineup and clearlyproved that there is depth within theArrows golf program.
At the 12-team ISL KingmanTournament on Monday, May 21, theArrows varsity golfers put on an impressivedisplay, earning second place. e 18-holestroke play tournament was held at thelovely Wianno Club on Cape Cod, a courseno Arrows had played until their practiceround the aernoon before. Wianno is ashort course, measuring just over 6,000yards, but has a number of tricky holes,especially the 430-yard par four tenth hole.It was clear the knowledge the Arrowsgained from their Sunday practice roundpaid off on Monday, as all the golfersbettered their score by playing intelligentlyand avoiding big numbers.
e Kingman Tournament is scored bytaking each ISL team’s best four out of fivescores. us one member of a team can
have a high round with little consequence,but if two members do, the team has littleshot at performing well. e Arrows wereunsurprisingly led by eighth-graderAlejandro Soto, who carded a fine 74,which included an improbable 40-footbirdie putt on his seventeenth hole, a verydifficult long par four. Rookie junior KevinLooney was the next Arrow to report inwith an excellent round of 76, theculmination of a season of dedicated workand marked improvement. Looney made itaround Wianno with 12 pars and 6 bogeys,an impressive feat. Junior Tommy Kelleyfinished his round strong with threestraight pars aer an unfortunate triple-bogey on his fieenth hole to finish at asolid 78. With Kelley’s 78, the team hadthree strong scores on the board with twomore Arrows still finishing up their roundson the course. If either Kevin Ginns orConnor McGuirk played a good round, St.Sebastian’s would be very much incontention for the title. Sophomore Ginnswas next to finish with a slightlydisappointing score of 84; Kevin playedmany fine holes but was tripped up byWianno’s demanding par threes. Juniorcaptain and number one player ConnorMcGuirk was the last in to the clubhouse,but he brought good news. Connor playeda steady round of golf, firing a balanced 79to round out the Arrows score of 307, anaverage of under 77 strokes! St. Sebastian’sfinished the tournament with 307, the bestscore it has seen at the ISL Tournament inmany years, but unfortunately on this day itwasn’t enough to beat a very hot Noblesteam. e top two scores in the entiretournament were from Nobles (a 69 and a70), and they lapped the field with a finescore of 298. e Arrows did manage to ekeout second place by two strokes over rivalBelmont Hill, which is a great feat sinceBelmont Hill went undefeated in matchplay during the season.
overall, it was a great day to be on theArrows varsity golf team. Congratulationsto Alejandro Soto and Kevin Looney,whose rounds earned them all-ISL Leaguehonors, Soto for the second time in asmany years. e young team came together
to play their finest golf of the year in animportant tournament and showed thatthey will be a contender in the ISL for yearsto come.
Each year it is a challenge to translatethe intensity and uniqueness of our
John Arens, “Anything canhappen on the water and usually does.”Sailing is unique not only because theresults and performances rely onteamwork, but safety as well. Sailinginspires camaraderie because of theamount of trust you put in your fellowsailor. We work together as a team toachieve a common goal, and this seasonwe performed admirably, whether it wasin the Mercury or a 420.
We enjoyed an active season.Highlights include a race at Notre DameAcademy in Hingham, earning 11th in theo’Day Qualifier in Sharon, and racing atMartha’s Vineyard High School in oakBluffs. At Community Boating we won inteam races against: Winsor, Newman Prep,Concord Academy, CRL, Quincy, andNewton Country Day. We earned SecondPlace, losing only to Newton North. Atleast once each week we were scheduled torace as part of the C Division in Fleet Races.
For the first time inteam history we were invited to the NewEngland Interscholastic TennisAssociation’s Class B Tournament. And,several team members received Leaguehonors. It was a remarkable season. Andwe were an eye-lash away from a irdPlace finish: two ISL losses came when theteam was short-handed.
We opened the season with a non-league win over Moses Brown (15-0), ateam we’ve not beaten in several years.Following the Moses Brown match andmissing a key player, the team gave up adisappointing loss to Nobles, which
finished fourth in the ISL. e team rebounded, though, by winningits next five matches, outscoring its opponents 66 sets to 9, and in theprocess defeating perennial power-house Milton. e team thendropped two matches - one to second place team Belmont Hill and a7-8 heart-breaking decision to BB&N.
But, how does the line read from the School’s Hymn? “ere’sno discouragement that makes him once relent...” e teamanswered the BB&N disappointment by winning its next seven ofeight matches, losing only to the League’s top place team RoxburyLatin.
e highlight during this run of seven wins was the team’s winover Middlesex, the League’s third place team. Prior to this matchMiddlesex was undefeated, and we knew we were facing one of theLeague’s top teams. Needing to play our best, the entire teamdelivered. is was a match that could easily have gone the otherway, with many close sets. We swept the doubles round with thefollowing wins: Conor Haughey ’12 & Weston Brach ’16 won a closetie-breaker at #1 (7-6); John Cheever ’12 and Terry o’Connor ’12claimed a close set at #2 (8-5); and Max Conway ’13 and CalebAldrich ’14 took another close set at #3 (8-6). As the singles matchesgot underway, it looked as if Middlesex was ready to take ourmomentum away, gaining early leads in many of the match-ups.But, typical of this team, the players refused to fold and found waysto win. We took eight of the twelve singles sets.
