Industry Comment

With the dairy industry being a major driver

in the Mid Canterbury economy, it is always a popular and somewhat

repetitive topic of conversation.

From a real estate point of view, the recent downward movements in the milk payout for dairy farmers has made for a slow and inconsistent sales season for dairy land.

However, completed transactions across all land classes have maintained strong levels, with top tier land (good water, soils and infrastructure) continuing to demand a premium.

Somewhat surprisingly, activity in support/dry stock and arable land has remained solid with some very strong sales being completed in the past 12 months.

This confi dence in a downturn is driven, in my opinion, by the ability to guarantee production with water (Mid Canterbury’s jewel in the crown) as well as confi dence in the mid and long-term positions for milk prices, sound arable prices,

strong beef schedule and projected benefi ts from the Trans Pacifi c Partnership Agreement.

The median price of dairy land has eased throughout the rest of the country however we are not seeing that in our region.

Our buff er of irrigation has again bucked the trend and the general attitude of people in the industry is positive, with most speculating that the downturn in dairy is just a low in a cycle and we, as Mid Cantabrians, are very fortunate to be in this district.

For me, the key to making your garden look

visually appealingis to include plants in a

range of sizes. If you’ve already got your small plants covered and it’s height you’re after, look no further than the delphinium, which can grow to around 180cm tall.

Beautiful and elegant, bold and statuesque, delphiniums are certainly no shrinking violets. Quite the opposite, in fact, with the fl owers perfectly designed to play a leading role in your garden.

You’ll be sure to love the colours too, with the plant’s dense leaves sprouting fl owers ranging from traditional blues right through to lilac, pink, yellow and white.

Not only striking, delphiniums are easy to grow, with the hardy perennials fl owering from late spring to late autumn, year after year.

They’re versatile too, working well in pretty, country gardens as well as modern or stately, sculptural ones (plant next to hostas, canna lilies and cardoons, and throw in some river stones for a bit of a contemporary look).
