With interest rates still at all time lows and the reported

volatile situation and real estate markets overseas more and

more people are enquiring about investment properties here and

in other centres throughout New Zealand.

Auckland, which reportedly had a lull in sales last year, mainly due to a law brought in requiring foreign investors to supply an IRD number and a New Zealand bank account, has recently experienced a surge in sales, with values up 11.6 per cent on February this year compared to the same time last year.

Auckland property coach, Ron Hoy Fong, whose 400 property investor clients include about 60 per cent New Zealand-based Chinese, said the easing of restrictions of privately held

capital in China, through the Qualified Domestic Individual Investor (QDII2) programme will, and is again, having a major affect on Chinese investors

re-entering the market here in New Zealand.

QDII2 will allow individuals in six cities - Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing, Wuhan, Shenzhen and Wenzhou - to move as much as half of their assets overseas.

Here in Ashburton, with our historically low average property sale prices, coupled with medium weekly rental returns currently showing on tenancy.govt.nz website of a two-bedroom flat at $277, a three-bedroom house at $340 and four-bedroom house at $375 per week, still make for a sound, solid investment .

Gardening

Basil is a plant that I often get

asked how to grow successfully.

It seems that some gardeners have no trouble keeping a plentiful supply of basil growing and others struggle to produce a few leaves for the top of a pizza.

The trick to growing great basil is making sure you address its need for warmth. It really likes the sun.

If you’re planting outside make sure you pick a spot in direct sunlight. And if you’re growing it in a little pot to have indoors make sure it’s near a window which also gets lots of sun.

And this love of warmth doesn’t just apply to your regular sweet basil variety. Cinnamon basil, thai basil, greek basil, red basil and basil bush all favour a sunny spot.

You can grab any of the above varieties of basil from your local supermarket, or garden centre. Alternatively, head online shop and have your seedlings delivered direct to your door.

Once you’ve found the perfect

sunny location, all you need to do is dig a little hole, around 3cm deep, and plant each seedling.

If you’re planting outside, it always helps to give the seedlings a good kick start by adding a general fertiliser to the soil surrounding the seedlings. And, if you’re planting in a pot, use a good all-round potting mix.

Because basil likes to be warm it doesn’t like to get too wet. So don’t go overwatering it. I’m a bit lazy with watering my basil. I simply wait until it starts to droop then give it a good drink and it bounces right back.

In around four to six weeks you’ll know if you’ve mastered the art of growing basil. Then pick off the leaves and stems as you require them. Picking it will also ensure it keeps producing and if you spot any flower buds, cut them off before they go to seed.
