BEHOEDE MY!Moderedakteur Pepe Sofianos slaan die

Mafiastyl-fedora, wat ewe goed by ouens lyk (dink Johnny Depp) as by meisies.

A wide variety of paintings to choose from.

HEALTH

LAERSKOOL ARISTEA KRY ‘N GRONDSLAGFASE ADJUNKHOOF. Mev.

WAT DINK ONS STUDENTE VAN ONS SKOOL?A wonderful school that touched my heart from the very start. All staff were friendly and welcoming and has made it a pleasure to be here. Jy weet hoe dit voel as jy by jou ma se huis kom, dis hoe dit voel as jy by Aristea instap.

So Aristea in 1 sin? DIS ‘n FEES OM DEEL VAN ARISTEA TE WEES.

TRAVEL

TELLING THE DIFFERENCEThe perennial confusion between the common cold and influenza is due to the fact that the symptoms are so similar: runny nose, sore throat, fever, and body aches. For the record, colds are caused by viruses, and there are often at least 200 of them circulating during cold and flu season. By contrast, there’s usually only one influenza virus in circulation every year, according to health experts.

The best indications that you’re dealing

with a cold and not the flu are severity and duration: Colds typically last between three and seven days and generally aren’t very serious.

IS THE FLU SERIOUS?If the treatment for colds and the flu is typically the same, why is it important to know whether you’ve got one or the other?

Because the flu has much greater potential to lead to pneumonia in certain high-risk people. Those people include

the elderly, those with chronic conditions (such as diabetes, asthma and chronic bronchitis), and those with auto-immune deficiencies.

Pneumonia should be suspected if flu symptoms suddenly worsen, if a fever suddenly spikes higher, or if someone experiences shortness of breath. A healthcare provider should be called immediately if such symptoms develop.

NETBALLJhoané Jonker an u/12 (left) and Kirsten Wolfaardt an u/13(right) both qualified for the Western Cape Netball trials which will take place on 7 and 8 August, at Riversdale. Kirsten also received the honour to be chosen as the captain of the u/13 Netball Team.

CHESSDuring the June school holidays, Emil Schnäbel won the SA Schools Chess Championships for Individuals for the u/13 age group, at the Cape Sun Hotel in Cape Town. He achieved 6.5 out of 7 points.

FUND RAISINGLast year Samantha Swart, one of our present Grade 6 learners, organised a raffle to raise funds for Founders Educare in Khayelitsha. She, together with the girls in her local Girl Guide Company, sold tickets and raised over R4 500! With sponsorship from New Foam, Samantha managed to hand over 40 mattresses. The children were very excited and could not wait for their comfy nap time!

TECHNOLOGY Last term, the Grade 7 learners designed and constructed models of cell phone towers during their Technology lessons. As the structure would be erected on the school’s property, it had to be strong, rigid and stable, and constructed from suitable material. It would also have to be visually pleasing. The learners rose to challenge, got creative and built some rather interesting models.

JUDOWell done to Saskia Ford. She came third in the Shindokan Inter-School Judo Championships. Congratulations on your bronze medal – the boys definitely won’t want to mess with you!

‘MANDELA DAY’ Emma Naicker, a Grade 4 learner, chose to spend her ‘Mandela Day’ musically. She, along with the junior and senior orchestra at the Athlone Academy of Music, performed at the Douglas Murray Home in Retreat.

DEHUMIDIFIERTHINGS YOU WILL NEED:• A frame that you like – it

can be any size, but we recommend one of which the gap in the center is slightly larger than your keys

• A screw driver with appropriate size screw (the box of screw hooks will tell you which size).

• Screw hooks.

WHAT TO DO:Take your frame and plan out where you’d like your hooks to be placed. I decided to use four hooks for my frame.

Once decided, drill correct sized holes into the frame. After holes are drilled, screw in each hook, and you’re ready to mount on wall and hang keys!Yes, it’s that easy!

DIY KEYS FRAME.I love it when practical things are pretty! This month, why don’t you try and make one of these DIY key frames, which just happen to be both! And, it’s so simple.

A NIGHT IN PARIS On Saturday, 1 August, the Matriculants of 2015 celebrated the

culmination of their school career at the Matric Dance which was held at the Morgensrust estate, tucked away in the Joostenberg

Vlakte.Matriculants were welcomed by Mr Daly (Headmaster) on the red

carpet, with cameras flashing to capture each ones’ arrival. Tables were dressed in black and gold tablecloths, with silver crockery decked with pastel pink napkins. Staying true to the

Parisian theme, an Eiffel Tower was located at the centre of the dance floor.

The evening started with a slideshow depicting the course of the Matriculants’ journey and Mr Daly shared a heartfelt speech at the

last Matric Dance he will be attending as principal. The dance floor was opened by the Head Prefects, Keenan Jacobs and Christine Ile, which was soon filled with the entire group dancing

to music ranging from modern to Afrikaans to that of the sixties. One thing that was evident throughout the evening was the strong

sense of unity in the group. Everyone was elated to see their friends enjoying themselves.

The Matric Farewell Committee worked tirelessly, ensuring that the evening ran smoothly and that each person felt like royalty.

This special Matric dance will not be forgotten any time soon. Head Girl and Head Boy

FAIRMONT ITALY TOURA group of students from Fairmont toured Italy over the July holidays. Even though it was a very hot trip it was an experience none of them would ever forget.

SOUTH AFRICAN HOCKEY TEAMJulia Masureik (17) and Liam Ward (16) from Fairmont High School represented the Western Province hockey team at the Inter Provincial Tournament during the school holiday in July. Julia was selected for the South African u/17 squad and Liam for the u/16 side. Both participated in the South African High Performance Camps for respective age groups. Fairmont is delighted by their outstanding performance.

LAND SERVICE NATIONALSMegan van der Merwe (Grade 9) has been selected to represent the Western Cape at the Land Service Nationals in Mpumalanga at the end of this year. This is a very big privilege as only 14 girls from schools all over the Western Cape could be selected to go. Well done Megan!

TEACHERS TRAINING AT BELLVILLE TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL Teachers from several Western Cape schools were getting hands-on experience in the new revised curriculum for technical schools, which will be introduced next year and is expected to increase study and work opportunities for pupils. The revised curriculum would be introduced in Bellville THS in 2016 for Gr 10 learners. The revised curriculum was developed with universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges and industry. Civil technology, for example, was a combination of a whole lot of subjects like building, construction and civil services. With the revised curriculum a pupil will be able to choose an area of specialisation, like construction. Two new subjects, technical

maths and technical sciences, were also being introduced while maths literacy would no longer be offered at Bellville THS. This would allow pupils to enter the artisan route or the engineering route. With technical maths, technical sciences and a technology subject pupils would be able to enter industry. They would also have the option of doing pure maths, physical sciences and a technology subject, which would allow them to gain access to university.

HTS SPORT STARS SHINE BRIGHTHTS Bellville THS have always been blessed with multiple provincial sports achievements by its learners in the past, and we seem to have more of the same occurring during the cold winter months. We are proud to have Rogan Smith who represented WP U18 Table-tennis during the holidays and was awarded a silver medal at the WP Competition. Impressively Rogan is also ranked 9th in South Africa. We are proud of his achievements. Our U19 Cricket captain and top run scorer Shane Hull has been selected into the WP U19 Winter training group who will participate in the Cricket SA Cricket weeks during December later this year. We are proud to have you guys.

U19 RUGBY TOUR A BIG SUCCESSHTS Bellville U19 rugby team toured the Southern Cape Areas of George, Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay during the first week of Winter holidays. The staff and parents really worked hard to make it a reality, and we are grateful for all who contributed to the success of the tour. Out of the four scheduled matches we won two, which were all extremely hard fought battles, but we are extremely proud and can’t wait to start with the process again. We believe our boys made a lot of memories which will stay with them forever.
