Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage on the 12th of October? The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. 40 000 people were in attendance. 2. In the beginning, beer was not available at Oktoberfest. Alcohol could only be purchased and enjoyed outside the venue. 3. Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times because of disease and war. In 1854 and 1873, cholera epidemics forced the fest’s postponement. It was also cancelled during the Franco-Prussian War, WWI and WWII. 4. Did you know that Albert Einstein worked at the festival? He was employed as a trainee in his uncle’s electrical company, and the then-owners of the Schottenhamel tent decided that they wanted to be the first to take advantage of electric lighting, which is why Einstein was employed to screw in light bulbs. 5. Despite its name, Oktoberfest actually starts in the third week of September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. #Septemberfest 6. The mugs themselves are hot items at Oktoberfest. Security guards annually recover approximately 150 000 from would-be souvenir hunters. Many are not recovered: The Hofbräu tent alone averages 35 000 missing each year. The fine for stealing a souvenir mug is R600. 8. Glass steins were late to the party: It wasn’t until 1892 that beer was served in glass mugs. Traditional beer steins were made of stone and later metal, and while some of those are still used, they are far outnumbered by their modern glass cousins. 9. You can’t start drinking until the mayor says so. Since 1950, the festivities only begin when, at noon, twelve guns sound a salute and the mayor cracks open the first beer barrel, yelling “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect). The mayor then hands the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. 10. In November of 2008, Bavarian waitress Anita Schwartz broke the record for most beer steins carried at once. Schwartz balanced 19 full beer steins—5 in each hand, and 9 positioned on top of these—and walked 40 meters without spilling. 100 000 SEATS IN THE FESTIVAL HALLS AVERAGE STATS FOR OKTOBERFEST 6.2 MILLION VISITORS ABOUT 980 SEATED TOILETS AND MORE THAN 878 METERS OF URINALS 83 telephones for local and international credit cards Chickens: 521 872 Pork sausages: 284 506 Fish: 38 650 kg Pork knuckles: 58 446 Oxen: 104 6 940 600 LITRES OF BEER CONSUMED Sources: http://www.foodrepublic.com, http://nbyc.us/Oktoberfest-Fun-Facts.php, http://www.oktoberfest.net/ Many of us have been celebrating Oktoberfest for as long as we can remember.

International Food DayThe Grade 4 International Food Day has become somewhat of a tradition at Edgemead Primary School and the highlight of the year for the grade four pupils. It is a really enjoyable way of learning about how other cultures have influenced our South African society.

On 23 September, the Grade 3’s held the finals of their ‘Math Whizz Competition’. The competition was won by Ross Jacobs. The runners up were Ethan Manning and Reid Gilmour. Also participating in the finals was Leo Mischker and Josh Hagglund.

Spring Day Edgemead Primary Environmental Club (EPEC) celebrated Spring Day by having a Recycling Competition for Grades 4 to 7. The learners had to create a table decoration out of recycled goods. Much creativity flowed and the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated.

Lunch Time ConcertA new addition to our Music Department this year has been our phenomenal Jazz Band under the expert tutelage of Mr Gibbons. These fine musicians performed at our ‘Lunch Time Concert’ this week and wowed the audience with a James Bond Medley. They

will be performing at a wedding this Saturday, and at the Isabel Alberts Music Concert hosted by Monte Vista Primary School. Students and educators of neighbouring schools can socialize and share music in a non-competitive way at this event.

Graad 7- skryfprojek First team hockey boys in Western Province top schools’ final

Ben sal ‘n boekprys as erkenning by ‘n funksie te Protea Hotel, Durbanville ontvang.

The first team hockey boys took part in the Western Province Top Schools’ Competition held at Hartleyvale on 12 September. After ending second in their pool, they beat Panorama Primary in the semi-finals to earn their place in the final. The final, against Bishops, was a closely

fought contest, ending in a draw. The teams then had to do ‘show downs’ to determine the overall winner. Bishops won by three goals to two. Kenridge is so proud of the first team hockey boys who displayed determination and good sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

South Africa DayThe Grade 3 theme for this term has been SOUTH AFRICA. On a cold and wet 19 September, the Grade 3 learners, together with the Grade 3 class from Valley Primary, celebrated South Africa Day. Everybody enjoyed “braaiing stokbrood”, drumming and painting the South African flag on their own t-shirts! It was an awesome day and we certainly have many proud South Africans in Grade 3.

Na 3 dae se kompetisie is hy as die algehele wenner a a n g e w y s en as die wêreldkampioen vir 2014 gekroon.

The learners from the Art/Design department of Stellenberg High School recently hosted an eco-fashion show, titled Grunge Couture. The learners were responsible for the making of the décor and costumes. The costumes were made from recycled ‘grungy’ waste and upcycled to glitz and glamour ‘couture’ costumes. The theme of the event was inspired by the film Moulin Rouge.

The Settlers High School

Children of the world uniteOn 8 September 2014, The Settlers High School saw its enthusiastic RCL group launch the World’s Children’s Prize Programme. Recently, the RCL chairperson, Sinhle Radebe attended a workshop hosted by The Department of Education, where it was suggested that schools educate their learners about children’s rights, and what better way to do that than to have Settlers be part of the international children’s vote for the winner of The World’s Children’s Prize. “I think that bringing this particular initiative to the school was important for us as an RCL on the basis that we have a responsibility to educate our fellow learners not only on their rights, but also on the democratic

process. The World’s Children’s Prize vote allowed us to champion children’s rights and have a lot of constructive fun”, said Radebe. All classes received voting ballots, and the voting took place during the week of launch. Votes were counted and Settlers’ most voted nominee for the World’s Children Prize was the extraordinary seventeen year old Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai. RCL coordinator Mrs Ingpen said, “Knowing that The Settlers High School took part in the vote for World’s Children’s Prize meant that we were able to be a part of a global initiative, and that is, among other things, a true expression of Settlers spirit.” - Vivek Abraham (Grade 10 pupil)
