WP JUNIOR LEAGUE & CHAMPS

BRIDGE HOUSE GALA

12TH ANNUAL CANSA SHAVATHON DAY

EPS participated in the Bridge House Gala on Friday, 6 March where we placed third overall. It was extremely hot in Franschhoek, but the swimmers thoroughly enjoyed the event.

This past weekend Edgemead Primary recently supported the 12th Annual CANSA Shavathon Day. Were they decided to support this initiative as many of our EPS families have been affected by this disease. We obviously could not do a shavathon, so we opted for “Crazy Hair Day”...and the EPS kids went...CRAZY! Although not mandatory, many parents also chose to donate money towards

this charity. Lots of fun was had...and many giggles at the teachers who also joined in on the fun. Although we laughed and had fun, we were reminded of why we went crazy - to support those who have lost their hair to cancer, to think of those battling every day to get better and to remember those we have lost.

Hey there, all you AWSUM Peeps! Can you believe that it’s already the last month of the first term? Seriously, it feels like just the other day when I was welcoming you all back from a long and lovely Christmas break!

This month we’ve got some exciting news for you: AWSUM News in partnership with Natural Beauty is launching a three month competition, where you could win amazing product hampers. And if you send in a beauty selfie you could up your winnings with an extra R1 000. Also, your school stands a chance of winning R10 000 in cash!!!

Secondly, we are thrilled to announce that sales are open for our first (of many) AWSUM Matric Rage/ Euro

trips! Can you imagine ...? 12 Days, 6 Cities, 5 Countries. Matrics of 2015, you cannot afford to miss out on this once in a lifetime experience. Start putting in extra shifts if you’re a waiter, wash your mom’s car, mow the lawn - do whatever you can to get your hands on one of these boarding passes to awesomeness.

This month’s school of the month is Edgemead Primary School. Well done guys! We hope you enjoy your special space up front. Thank you for your submissions every month. We love working with you.

To the rest, remember that your school could be next. Simply submit your news on time and encourage your school to promote AWSUM News via the school communicator, newsletters, website and Facebook.

Tell us about your school events and how we could assist. Who knows, your school might be the next School of the Month, boasting a full page’s worth of bragging rights.

Till next time; Tenille and the AWSUM team.

5 PROFILE

Two months ago, De Villiers underwent a full reconstruction of the anterior and posterior cruciate knee ligaments with an artificial graft, as well as a repair of the medial collateral knee ligament. In simple terms, he had a full knee reconstruction. According to dr Jacques Snyman, this is fairly serious surgery that could be expected to put the rugby player out of commission for approximately eight months.

De Villiers noted that he is very fortunate to have supportive infrastructures at both the Springboks and the Stormers to help him recover from injuries and perform at optimal levels. “In this case, I still needed surgery to repair the damage to my knee, and it really helped knowing I had a supportive and understanding medical scheme in my corner.”

“Recovery after major knee surgery is a slow and careful process requiring input from the orthopaedic surgeon, physical therapist, chiropractor, and trainer who know your abilities and can advise you accordingly,” he explained.

Dr Snyman explains the usual stages of recovery one may expect after major knee surgery:Post-surgeryAfter serious knee surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon will usually evaluate any swelling and pain, your muscle activation patterns, and the range of motion of your knee (as well as that of your hip, ankle and lumbar spine). Every joint should function properly so that there is no added stress placed on the knee.

The first two weeksDecreasing the swelling and reaching full passive range of motion is very important in the first few weeks after surgery. Treatment options and programmes may include icing the area regularly and working the range of motion between icing sessions. Adhering

to these programmes is crucial to recovery.

Start doing weight-bearing exercisesOnce you have achieved a full range of motion, you can start doing supervised weight-bearing exercises, which may include squats and lunges to strengthen the knee and ligaments.

“Having knee surgery is most certainly a humbling experience that teaches you not to take your health for granted,” said De Villiers. “My body is pivotal to my career, but injuries do happen – especially in a sport like rugby. Injuries are part of life; you just have to accept them, listen to your doctor and medical specialists, and work hard to recover.

“At this stage, it’s difficult to determine how long I’ll be out of action. In all likelihood, it will be for about eight months, but I am doing everything I can to fast-track my recovery. I am also trying to keep fit by doing some low-intensity cycling and swimming.

“The time-out has also given me the perfect opportunity to bond with my baby, Luka, the newest addition to our family.

JEAN DE VILLIERS: ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERYWith little over eight months left before the start of one of the world’s most anticipated sporting events, the Rugby World Cup, South Africans are waiting with bated breath to see whether national rugby captain Jean de Villiers will be fit enough to play after he sustained a serious knee injury against Wales last year.

Spotted: The injured Springbok captain taking time out to read his latest issue of AWSUM!

MAKE A STATEMENT! Easy peasy trend tips

Statement necklaces are a huge trend now, and they’re an easy way to add some flair to your basic wardrobe. A statement piece is, of course, the best

way to take an outfit from boring to bold. Even though most people think that statement necklaces

are too fancy, these items can be worn with any outfit if paired properly. When it comes to wearing statement pieces, it’s all about incorporating them

into your own style and matching them to your personality and lifestyle.

By Marilize Stemmet ӏ Cutting Edge Hair, Make-up, Image & Finishing School [email protected]/cuttingedgemarilize

STYLING TIP #4Pair a statement necklace with

simple items like a plain tee and a pair of jeans for a more

polished look.

STYLING TIP #5Try to match the

colour of your necklace to one of the colours in your

outfit.

STYLING TIP #2Wear a bib necklace over a high-neck top so it almost looks like part of the design.

STYLING TIP #3Mix metals. Wearing gold and silver pieces together is a great

way of creating an interesting look.

STYLING TIP #1For a boho chic look, go for different chains and crystals. Necklaces can be small pieces worn together and don’t necessarily have to be big to make a statement.

Samsung Galaxy S6Every release in the Samsung S series has been highly anticipated, and it’s been no different in the run-up to the release of the Galaxy S6. In fact, the S6 may be more deserving of attention than any of its predecessors, as the phone is sure to shake up our expectations of the Galaxy S series.

From a flexible display and metal casing to an octa-core processor, rumours and speculation have been flying around the internet. Some rumours are, of course, more likely to prove true than others, but everything seems to be pointing to big upgrades and a smartphone deserving of the hype.

Here are some things to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S6 in terms of design, features, price, release date and specifications:GET READY FOR AN UPDATED DESIGN. Expect the S6 to have a more durable case, possibly made of aluminium or grapheme.

Smartphones – and their screens – have been getting

bigger. This is one trend that doesn’t look to be at an end, so expect the S6 to feature a 5.1’’ screen.

The biggest upgrades will probably be seen in the processor and camera, and the phone’s display and durability.

Expect the S6 to have a 20MP rear camera and 4-7 front camera.

EXPECTED PRICESamsung smartphones have always been at the higher end of the pricing spectrum, and we don’t expect this one to be any different. In fact, the S6 is likely to be a little more expensive than previous phones in the S series. You’ll probably be looking at approximately R8 925.

CHILDREN’S COUNSELING AND PLAY THERAPY

Trauma Debriefing, Aggression, Fear and Anxiety, Divorce,

Death (Grief Counseling), Depression and Suicide, poor Self-image, School related stress

Should we tell our kids they’re fat?Nowadays we don’t like to talk about weight issues, especially not with our children, but by avoiding the topic are we actually encouraging our children to be unhealthy?Children today are larger than ever. As parents we go out of our way to prevent them from feeling concerned about their weight, but could this behaviour actually be irresponsible? Are we teaching our children that obesity and its associated health complications don’t matter? Are we, as parents, fuelling the global obesity epidemic?

IS OBESITY REALLY OKAY?No, its not. It’s not about beauty, beauty comes in all shapes and sizes but unfortunately, health does not. Obesity is a health issue not an aesthetic issue and we need to recognise and acknowledge that.

As the prevalence of obesity increases, so does the prevalence of related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and stroke. By protecting our children from knowing the consequences of being overweight or obese, we are actually lining

them up to continue with the poor lifestyle choices that lead to these life-threatening conditions.

BUT IS CALLING THEM “FAT” THE BEST WAY TO GO ABOUT IT?No, of course it isn’t. Talking about weight doesn’t have to be mean. If you’re child has valid concerns about their weight, there is no benefit in denying them. Instead you can acknowledge their concerns and help them to become healthier.

If the whole family is making a change towards a healthier lifestyle, your overweight child won’t have to feel different or isolated from their siblings.

It is not about making children fear being overweight; it is about teaching them to have a good relationship with food in order to live a long, happy and healthy life.

FAIRMONT INTERACT SERVICE WEEKENDRAPE/CHILD ABUSE FOCUS ON FRIDAY 06TH MARCH 201580 Interactors attended a workshop on child abuse and rape.

The Interactors made their voices heard by speaking out against rape by making 100 care packs that will be delivered to the local police station.

Each care pack was carefully put together to include a facecloth, deodorant, energy bar and a handmade token ring to encourage the rape survivor.

LUCKY LUCY FOUNDATION

ARGUS CYCLE TOUR SUNDAY 08 MARCH 2015

Interactors visited the animals at Lucky Lucy, Saturday 7 March 2015 to help walk the dogs and provide much needed tender love and care to the cats. We wish to thank Kenridge pre-primary for collecting donations for this organisation that cares for stray, lost and abandoned pets.

A group of ten Interactors helped to hand out medals at the finishing line of the Argus Cycle Tour. This was very rewarding as many cyclists completed the cycle in aid of charity. The focus of

this year’s ride was to support and show solidarity to the Volunteer Firefighters who worked tirelessly to put out the raging veld fires in our surrounding mountains.

Well done Interact Society – we are proud of you!

GRADE R & 1 SPORTS DAY

The Grade R2 class can be seen exploring ways of making boats and ships out of blocks. Their theme for the week was Summer and The Sea.

Grade R2 Sage Sinclair and Brooklyn Cronje are pictured also creating families out of playdough, while their friends are busy making hats in the background.

Thando Sonti, Sage Sinclair and Gabrielle Poyer proudly show off their choices for a healthy snack during Brain Food Break.

The annual Grade R and Grade 1 Sports Day Picnic was a fun-filled event for the whole family. Two Grade R learners are pictured, competing in the much-loved tyre race, with H.O..D. Marzanne Guse in the background.

Kauthar Jakoet and Brandon Snyders had a lot of fun creating mommies, daddies, brothers, sisters, babies and grandparents out of playdough when the Grade R2 class recently learnt about families.

The Grade R2 class are pictured during their morning free play in their re-created class. Block play and constructive toys are pictured in the foreground while the book corner and fantasy corner are visible in the background. Fine motor, puzzles and drawing activities were placed on the right hand side, with painting and art activities behind the photographer.

The Grade R’s had quite an adventure when their classes moved to the hall during renovations to the school roof. The classes were re-created as much as possible, with initiative and imagination, to ensure that the learners still had the opportunity to

engage in all their normal activities. It was an exciting time for teachers and learners and a good opportunity to learn about the importance of being connected and working as a team. The Grade R2 class are pictured getting ready to start their day.

GRAAD 5 KAMP

BLESSIE NETBALKLINIEK

Alle leerders van Graad 1 – 7 het deelgeneem aan die heelskool landloop op Vrydag, 13 Maart. Elke leerder wat die roete voltooi het, het ‘n medalje ontvang. Eight of our athletes were selected for the

MNED Athletics team and have qualified to take part in the WP Championships at Coetzenburg.

Makayla Strauss (Javelin), Jurie Geldenhuys (Discus), Sebastian Boshoff (Javelin), Eugene Marx (Shot put), Benn Dreyer (Shot put), Alissa Jacob (Hurdles), Thorina Bosman (1 200m), Zander Enslin (1 200m). Congratulations to Eugene Marx who was chosen for the Western Cape Athletics team.
