Whether you’re doing it on your stoep in Strandfontein, on your patio in Pretoria or at your mother’s cousin’s uncle’s house in Kraaifontein, there’s nothing better than the smell of a chop sizzling on the coals.

And, as a bonus, we all get the day off, as our government has decided to set 24 September aside for all South Africans to celebrate our rich heritage.

AWSUM Kombuis

WHAT YOU NEED:• 3 grapefruits• 2 tbls brown sugar (approx)

WHAT TO DO:• Set the oven to grill and

place a rack in the middle shelf.

• Cut grapefruits evenly in half, slice 2-3mm off each base to allow grapefruits to rest flat without rolling.

• If using a grapefruit knife, carefully cut along the rim of the flesh before cutting into 4 or 8 segments.

• Place grapefruits on a baking sheets, flesh side up,and sprinkle each half with approximately 1 tsp of brown sugar to taste.

• Grill for about 10-15 minutes until flecked and speckled.Serve plain or with yoghurt.

GRILLED GRAPE FRUITSI started serving these zesty and yet slightly warming delicacies on cooler spring retreat

mornings. There is something intrinsically cheerful about the smell of grapefruits that make them a welcome addition to a breakfast spread. Select ruby grapefruits for their

vibrant colour and richer antioxidant content and use a grapefruit knife to cut into segments before grilling for easier eating. The sprinkle of brown sugar will melt into the grapefruit as it caramelizes, softening the bitterness and giving the surface a perfectly

radiant glow. A joyous and juicy way to begin the day.

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” – Nelson Mandela

House & Home

YOU WILL NEED:• Ceramic or porcelain crockery• Stamp• Ink and pad• CPG (Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass) Podge

The crockery used in this DIY was bought on sale for next to nothing and combined with a favourite crown stamp, they are going to revolutionize our dinner parties!

1. Simply dab your stamp on the ink pad and test on paper to see if you need to dab more or less ink on it to get the desired effect.

2. Place the stamp in the section you want to stamp and try not to move it around while applying pressure on it.

For a lovely and very easy DIY, why not personalize your crockery with a stamp or monogram?

On glazed surfaces this is tricky but if you’re gentle you will get it done without difficulty. Don’t stress if you have a bit missing on a little section or get it smudged – the overall look will be slightly distressed and simply adds to the charm of the piece.

3. After it has dried properly you can glaze it with a couple of layers podge, making sure it dries thoroughly between layers. Bake your bowl, plate or mug for 60 minutes on 90 degrees Celsius with the door of the oven slightly open. Different makes of glaze

have different baking requirements so be sure to read the instruction carefully.

We were truly thrilled by the final result – now you give it a go!

MatrieksLaerskool Eversdal het Vrydag, 15 Augustus 2014 al die huidige matrieks wat by hulle op skool was in gr. 7, genooi om hulle weeklikse saalbyeenkoms by te woon. By die geleentheid was, v.l.n.r.

Eversdal hockey players bring home the silverwareFour of Eversdal Primary School’s Hockey players recently brought medals home. Lynda Portelli (second from left) captained WP Durbell Hockey team on their Regional Tour to East London from 27th to 30th June. There were eleven teams participating from the southern regions. Lynda’s team ended in 3rd place and received bronze medals. Three other Eversdal learners participated in the WP Interzonal Tournament (North WP, South WP and

Helderberg WP) held at Hartleyvale on Friday, 8 August, namely: Mire de Jongh (second from right) for Northern girls; Jack Mantell (left) and Henju Duvenhage (far right) for Central boys. There were 5 teams in the girls’ and boys’ leagues respectively. Mire’s team ended in first place in the boys’ tournament and received gold medals. Jack and Henju received silver medals for finishing in second place in the boys’ tournament.

DAMUS MaandBy Eversdal beteken Augustusmaand DAMUS .

The Netball games had to be postponed due to the wet weather, but the girls eventually enjoyed a lovely game. The girls in action during their Hockey match.

It has become an annual event to host our previous Gr 7’s at a Special Assembly, followed by a tea, in their Matric year. It is heart-warming to meet these young ladies and gentlemen again and to connect with them after 5 years. It is always very interesting to find out where they are heading after school and what they are going to study!

Gr. 4 – 6 learners took part in the annual countrywide celebration of Science and Technology. The learners made posters and built models for the exhibition which started on 15 August. The themes were: Gr 4- Transport for the future, Gr. 5 - How to save water and Gr. 6 - Renewable sources of electricity. Exciting work was produced by the learners. They learnt a lot from each other and enjoyed demonstrating the different models.

On Friday evening, the 29th of August, our First Boys’ Hockey team took part in the Kenridge Primary Day/Night Hockey Tournament at Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch. The U/13 boy’s teams competed in two groups of 6 teams each, in a round robin phase. Thereafter the teams were ranked according to points accumulated within their group and a match against the opposite-placed team in the other group followed. During the round

‘Blessies keep a child warm’ project. Montagu drama festival Gr. 3’s besoek

Chess Sporttoer

The Student Council was working very hard on their ‘Blessies keep a child warm’ project. This project aimed to knit as many scarves possible and distribute it to needy learners. Our Welgemoed family came out in full support of this project and together knitted and donated 400 scarves! These scarves were donated to Bellville South Primary, De Waveren Primary and Kasselsvlei Primary. It was a great opportunity for the learners to ‘give back’ to the communities.

The A.C.T. drama group of Marlize Blom participated in the Montagu drama festival. Their play, Die avonture van Indiana Jones, was awarded a silver medal. Neal Malan and Rochelle Combrink were nominated for the best actors.

Our proud U/9 chess team! They came second at the WP Top Schools play-offs.

Laerskool Welgemoed se senior sportspanne was van 27 – 30 Augustus op ‘n sporttoer sover as Plettenbergbaai. En daar Monkey Town en Jukani leeupark besoek.

On Saturday, 23 August, we held our annual Winter Sports Day against Table View. The Table View staff members arrived bright and early, and were treated to hearty breakfast. And then, it was “Game On”! Rugby, Netball and Hockey Teams from U 8’s to the U12’s gave it their all. But the most furiously contested games were most

definitely the First Teams. After all, pride was at stake.Cross country was also included into the event this year and the run on the Friday was well attended. It was a most enjoyable day indeed and wonderful opportunity for parents to see their children participating.

On the 23rd and 24th of August Fairmont High School, hosted the MSSA Western Province LAN Championships. It was the first E-Sports championship that Fairmont High School hosted and we hope it is the first of many more championships. Earlier this year Fairmont High School started a gaming society and throughout the middle of the year they affiliated with the MSSA (Mind Sport South Africa). Being affiliated with the MSSA enabled any of our learners to participate in the Competition. At the moment there are 24 registered players from Fairmont High School who participated. Although we expected a bigger turnout, the competition lasted over 2 days.
