Two months ago, De Villiers underwent a full reconstruction of the anterior and posterior cruciate knee ligaments with an artificial graft, as well as a repair of the medial collateral knee ligament. In simple terms, he had a full knee reconstruction. According to dr Jacques Snyman, this is fairly serious surgery that could be expected to put the rugby player out of commission for approximately eight months.

De Villiers noted that he is very fortunate to have supportive infrastructures at both the Springboks and the Stormers to help him recover from injuries and perform at optimal levels. “In this case, I still needed surgery to repair the damage to my knee, and it really helped knowing I had a supportive and understanding medical scheme in my corner.”

“Recovery after major knee surgery is a slow and careful process requiring input from the orthopaedic surgeon, physical therapist, chiropractor, and trainer who know your abilities and can advise you accordingly,” he explained.

Dr Snyman explains the usual stages of recovery one may expect after major knee surgery:Post-surgeryAfter serious knee surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon will usually evaluate any swelling and pain, your muscle activation patterns, and the range of motion of your knee (as well as that of your hip, ankle and lumbar spine). Every joint should function properly so that there is no added stress placed on the knee.

The first two weeksDecreasing the swelling and reaching full passive range of motion is very important in the first few weeks after surgery. Treatment options and programmes may include icing the area regularly and working the range of motion between icing sessions. Adhering

to these programmes is crucial to recovery.

Start doing weight-bearing exercisesOnce you have achieved a full range of motion, you can start doing supervised weight-bearing exercises, which may include squats and lunges to strengthen the knee and ligaments.

“Having knee surgery is most certainly a humbling experience that teaches you not to take your health for granted,” said De Villiers. “My body is pivotal to my career, but injuries do happen – especially in a sport like rugby. Injuries are part of life; you just have to accept them, listen to your doctor and medical specialists, and work hard to recover.

“At this stage, it’s difficult to determine how long I’ll be out of action. In all likelihood, it will be for about eight months, but I am doing everything I can to fast-track my recovery. I am also trying to keep fit by doing some low-intensity cycling and swimming.

“The time-out has also given me the perfect opportunity to bond with my baby, Luka, the newest addition to our family.

HATTIES REIK UIT NA GEMEENSKAP n Besoek aan Heuningvlei het van die personeel besluit om ‘n verskil te maak. Omdat die naaste dorp 75 km ver is en vervoer die grootste probleem is, het die Ingenieursgrafika en Ontwerp vakspan en die Siviele en Meganiese Tegnologie vakgroepe besluit om ‘n donkiekarretjie te bou en aan die inwoners te skenk. Een van die bestaande karre is geskets en gemeet en binnekort sal daar aan die bou van die karretjie begin word.

DIY: STAMPED CROCKERY

crown stamp, they are going to revolutionize our dinner parties!1. Simply dab your stamp on the ink pad and test on paper to see if you need to dab more or less ink on it to get the desired effect.

2. Place the stamp in the section you want to stamp and try not to move it around while applying pressure on it. On glazed surfaces this is tricky but if you’re gentle you will get it done without difficulty. Don’t stress if you have a bit missing on a little section or get it smudged – the overall look will be slightly distressed and simply adds to the charm of the piece.

3. After it has dried properly you can glaze it with a couple of layers podge, making sure it dries thoroughly between layers. Bake your bowl, plate or mug for 60

minutes on 90 degrees Celsius with the door of the oven slightly open. Different makes of glaze have different baking requirements so be sure to read the instruction carefully. We were truly thrilled by the final result – now you give it a go!

From a flexible display and metal casing to an octa-core processor, rumours and speculation have been flying around the internet. Some rumours are, of course, more likely to prove true than others, but everything seems to be pointing to big upgrades and a smartphone deserving of the hype.

Here are some things to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S6 in terms of design, features, price, release date and specifications:

GET READY FOR AN UPDATED DESIGN. Expect the S6 to have a more durable case, possibly made of aluminium or grapheme.

Smartphones – and their screens – have been getting bigger. This is one trend that doesn’t look to be at an end, so expect the S6 to feature a 5.1’’ screen.

The biggest upgrades will probably be seen in the processor and camera, and the phone’s display and durability.

Expect the S6 to have a 20MP rear camera and 4-7 front camera.

Consumers want their phone batteries to last longer, and as Samsung have done well in this regard, it’s not unreasonable to expect them to keep improving.

Jean is ‘n skitterende fagot-speler (bassoon) wat vanjaar gekeur is vir die 25ste jaarlikse Franschoek Mountain Chamber Music Workshop. Dit is ‘n merkwaardige geleentheid vir enige musikant - dit sluit ‘n weeklange toegang to meestersklasse, uitvoerings en 2 afrigtingsessies per dag deur bekende opvoeders en musici in. Tyd word ook afgestaan aan musiek oefen, ontspanning en bestudering van kamermusiek-werke saam met ander musikante. Op grond van Jean se volgehoue prestasies met die fagot, is ‘n volle beurs aan hom toegeken vir

hierdie werkswinkel. Met sy fagot was hy die afgelope twee jaar kategoriewenner by beide die Tygerberg Internasionale Eisteddfod én die Stellenbosch Eisteddfod.

WP SKOLE ATLETIEKSPANDie Hoërskool Brackenfell is ontsettend trots daarop dat 26 atlete vanjaar gekies is vir die WP Skole-atletiekspan wat aan die Wes-Kaap Skole-atletiekkampioen-skappe gaan deelneem by Dal Josafat in die Paarl.

KARATETydens die naweek van 6-8 Maart 2015 het drie van ons leerders, Jayden Paulse, Joshua Snyman en Ntsika Ketsekile, aan die Karate Suid-Afrika, alle Style Nasionale Kampioenskappe deelgeneem. Al drie hierdie seuns het hul afrigters, Sensei Raynier Fourie (Onderwyser van Laerskool Aristea) en Sensei Xheniophene Hael van Northpine baie trots gemaak met hul uitstekende prestasie deur vir Karate Assosiasie Wes-Kaap te verteenwoordig. Jayden Paulse het die standaard volgehou deur uitstekend te vaar in sy groep met Katas. Daar was 47 deelnemers van regoor die land in die groep waaraan hy deelgeneem en waarbinne hy eerste geeïndig het. Jayden verwerf sy Protea kleure in karate en sal Suid-Afrika later vanjaar verteenwoordig op die Zone 6- Afrika toernooi, asook die Statebondspele wat sal plaasvind in New Delhi, Indië. Baie geluk aan hierdie atlete van Laerskool Aristea.

OFFICE NATIONAL GHOLFDAG Die onlangse, geborgde Office National gholfdag was ‘n reuse sukses. Aanstaande jaar se gholfdag vind plaas op 11 Maart en gaan gepaard met die 40 – jarige bestaansvieringe van die Laerskool Aristea.

Met die entoesiasme van die afrigters en atlete vanjaar, kan daar uitgesien word na goeie vertonings die volgende seisoen.

GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT….It is with great pleasure and pride, that all the staff and parents of Labiance Primary give a big congratulations to Mrs Mariette du Toit and Mrs Colette Roodt. After nearly a year of waiting, they have finally heard about their new positions. Mrs Roodt has been appointed as the Intermediate/Senior Phase HOD (Head of Department), and feels that it couldn’t have come at a better time. “I’m ready, and this is my time.” she said. Mrs Roodt has been teaching for 19 years, and the ISF staff could not have asked for a better

leader and mentor. With her kind nature, yet firm attitude, she’s perfect for the job. The biggest excitement is that Mrs du Toit has been appointed as Labiance’s new principal. Now, not only is she the school’s first official female principal, but this lady is also an absolute gem and a wonderful asset to the school. She has been teaching for 32 years and has been at Labiance for 19 years, where she was the Foundation Phase HOD. For the past 6 months she has been acting Vice-Principal, a role that has prepared her greatly

for what lies ahead. She has spent her entire life, devoted to her career, and has changed the lives of hundreds of children, as well as colleagues, and she is completely deserving of this role. She is capable of doing great things, as we have all already seen. We at Labiance wish both these ladies the best of luck for their new journeys ahead. DIE KLUB Die Klub bied vir elke leerder in die skool ‘n geleentheid om in ‘n veilige omgewing die mooiste dele van die Kaap te ontdek. Mev. Sandra Wentzel, Die Klub se koördineerder, neem gereeld Bellparkers op uitstappies. Hulle het al onder andere die Kasteel, Simonstad en die Woordfees besoek. Hier is ‘n groep graad 4 en 5 Bellparkers per trein op Saterdag, 21 Februarie, na die Strand om meer oor die omgewing te leer en natuurlik sandkastele te bou!

FISH IN THE WATERNot many schools are fortunate enough to have a swimming pool on the premises. Luckily, Bellpark is not one of those schools. We don’t just have a swimming pool; we also have our own swimming club for children and adults of all ages. All the Bellparkers, including some teachers, got to show off their swimming talent on the 6th of March

during our annual swimming gala. We believe in healthy competitive activities which mean that all the learners in the school, regardless of their swimming ability, had the opportunity to participate in the gala. It was a tough competition between the different colour teams but in the end, the yellow team was victorious.

BELLPARK IS TOPSTOPS was twintig jaar gelede ‘n inisiatief en nou is dit ‘n Bellpark-tradisie. Hierdie groep bied leerders die geleentheid om deur dans hul passie vir Christenskap uit te leef. Hulle tree gereeld by feeste en geleenthede op. Die groep is in 1995 deur Mev. Marie-Lize Coetzee op die been gebring.

WAKKERBLY BY SKOOLVrydagnag, 20 Februarie, het Bellville-Noord se Ouervereniging ‘n wakkerbly vir graad 5-7 aangebied na ‘n suksesvolle fliekaand die vorige naweek vir die jonger leerders van die skool. Aktiwiteite deur die nag het onder andere ingesluit algemene-kennis-kompetisies, vlugbal-en sokkerwedstryde in ‘n omheinde area in die saal, ‘n fliek of twee, danskompetisie

asook ‘n skattejag met flitse in die skoolgange. Oom Arné Mulder, OV-voorsitter, het gesorg vir hierdie program en is goed bygestaan deur OV-lede en vrywilligers uit die ouerkorps. BN’ERS NEEM DEEL AAN HUL EERSTE JUKSKEI KOMPETISIEJukskei is van vanjaar af ‘n nuwe sport waarby BN’ers kan inskakel. Hierdie eg inheemse spel word afgerig deur Andre Niehaus en sy dogter Tarene. Hul is betrokke by Bellville Jukskei-klub. Saterdag, 28 Februarie het 16 baie opgewonde BN’ers vir hul eerste kompetisie teen mekaar en

ander skole aangemeld. Eers is daar weer bietjie geoefen voordat die kompetisie begin het. Die klompie het mekaar deurentyd aangemoedig en ondersteun ongeag die feit dat hul wel teen mekaar meegeding het. Ons hoop werklik dat van hierdie spelers nog ver gaan kom in hierdie sport.

NUWE PERSONEEL Me. Helen-Anne Roux en Mev. Petra Gustafson het hul vroëer vanjaar by ons personeel aangesluit. Me. Roux is betrokke in die Junior-fase (gr. 3) en mev. DOGTERTJIE MET GROOT DROME AS RENJAERMonica Nortje (6 jaar oud) neem vanjaar deel in haar eerste seisoen as “go-kart” renjaer. Sy het tot dusver aan 4 wedrenne deelgeneem en al twee 2de plekke behaal. Sy ry in die 160cc ontwikkelingsklas en neem deel vir die klub Cape Oval.
