JIMINO ANNOUNCES

COUNTY COATS FOR KIDS PROGRAMRensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino has announcedthe results of this year’s Coats for Kids program that willdistribute 553 new coats to children throughout the County. The annual program is administered by the Department forYouth and relies upon a summertime golf outing supported bylocal businesses to raise the funds to purchase the new coats. The County distributes the coats with the assistance of localorganizations to help ensure those children in need of a coatget one while preventing overlap or duplication. Distribution iscurrently ongoing and will be completed by the week afterThanksgiving. “A warm winter coat is not a luxury and this program helpsensure that every child in need of a winter coat has one. Iwant to commend all of the local businesses who have helpedsupport this program as well as organizations who partner withus on this program and work day in and day out to support thechildren in our communities,” said Rensselaer County ExecutiveKathleen M. Jimino.Since the program’s inception in 2001, nearly 5,000 coats havebeen distributed. Once again, this year the coats werepurchased at a discounted price through Lodges and wrappedby county employees volunteering their time and materials.

Letter to the Editor: 73 years ago, out of the clear blue sky,Japanese fighter planes appeared and devastated PearlHarbor. They killed more than 2000 American soldiers andsailers and injured another 1000. My letter is a reminder toeveryone who cares, that Sunday, the 7th, is Pearl HarborRemembrance Day. It is an important day to remember andrecognize those who died and sacrificed that day. As thesurvivors become fewer and fewer, it’s up to the rest of us tokeep the memory alive. I hope that everyone will join me inlowering the American flag on that day as a sign of mourning. To follow proper flag etiquette, lower your flag to half-staff atsunrise and raise it back to full-staff at sunset on that day.~ Cheryl Rings, Gettysburg Flag Works

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the townsof East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we arehappy to provide our constituents with a report on actionstaken at the November 12, 2014 legislative meeting.Along with the meeting, November saw the general electionsfor federal, state and local offices across Rensselaer Countyand the state. There was a turnout of 54.8 percent of eligiblevoters in District 2, and an overall turnout of 50.9 percentacross the county.Legislators also continue review of the proposed 2015 countybudget, with consideration of the budget expected in earlyDecember. The budget is the fourth consecutive budget toremain under the state tax cap, and protects needed servicesand the county’s positive fiscal standing. At the legislative meeting, legislators approved the distributionof revenues from the filing of mortgages at the County Clerk’soffice. Under the resolution, East Greenbush will receive$220,848, North Greenbush $133,844 and Poestenkill $38,279.Legislators approved a new contract agreement between thecounty and the main county union, the United Public ServiceEmployees Union. TO ST. PAUL’S CENTER

St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church has done it again! On theSunday before Thanksgiving, volunteers packed 15 foodbaskets with turkeys and all the trimmings for a greatThanksgiving dinner. Members of the congregation providedthe canned and boxed goods, and their monetary donationsenabled the purchase of turkeys and fresh produce to roundout the baskets.Twelve of the baskets went to the St. Paul’s Center, to bedistributed to “graduates” of their program, women with familieswho are now living on their own. Our contact at the St. Paul’sCenter said the women were thrilled with what they received. The other three baskets were distributed to families who calledSt. Timothy’s for assistance during the holidays. Many thanks to the members of St. Timothy’s, whose greatgenerosity made all this possible.
