2013  Cinematography  Experience

Parent’s  Guide

Dear  Campers  and  Parents,   Welcome  to  Camp  Josepho,  where  technology  and  the  arts  intersect  in  Scou=ng!  We  are  thrilled  to  host  you  this  year  as  we  expand  our  programs  into  some  of  the  areas  of  greatest  interest  and  poten=al  for  young  men  today.  Camp  Josepho  enjoys  the  remote  solitude  of  the  outdoors,  but  it  is  only  minutes  from  the  entertainment  and  technology  hubs  in  Santa  Monica  and  Hollywood.  This  proximity  has  allowed  us  to  create  programs  that  immerse  Scouts  in  these  fields  with  prac=cal  hands-‐on  experience  and  unforgeHable  fun.

The  Cinematography  Experience  is  a  fully-‐immersive  four-‐day,  three-‐night  resident  camp  that  combines  the  requirements  for  the  Cinematography,  Communica=ons,  and  Theater  Merit  Badges  in  a  seamless  camp  experience.  Scouts  will  make  their  own  films,  build  sets,  write  scripts,  plan  produc=on,  ligh=ng,  edi=ng,  storyboarding  and  ac=ng  using  equipment  that  they  can  access  in  their  own  homes  and  schools.  Campers  work  directly  with  industry  professionals  in  hands  on  demonstra=ons  and  ac=vi=es.  Last  year  we  had  directors,  producers,  writers,  editors,  Foley  ar=sts,  actors,  makeup  ar=sts  and  crea=ve  execu=ves  join  us  as  volunteers  at  camp  to  lend  their  unique  perspec=ves  from  produc=ons  like  Transformers,  The  Dark  Knight,  The  Matrix,  Wreck-‐it  Ralph,  Cats  and  Dogs,  Unknown,  Gangster  Squad,  and  Incep=on,  to  name  just  a  few.

This  guide  should  answer  your  ques=ons  about  what  to  bring,  how  the  program  works,  and  your  camp  schedule.  This  camp  is  not  like  a  tradi=onal  Boy  Scout  summer  camp,  where  Scouts  aHend  as  a  troop  and  par=cipate  in  all  their  ac=vi=es  as  a  unit.  Rather,  we  hope  that  any  Scout  who  shares  an  interest  in  the  field  will  come  whether  or  not  his  troop  aHends.  There  are  links  to  the  BSA  Medical  Form,  which  you  should  print  up  and  bring  with  you  to  camp  on  the  first  day,  as  well  as  Special  Diet  form,  which  you  can  submit  electronically,  and  Talent  release  form  (especially  important  for  this  camp!).  Please  take  the  =me  to  make  sure  that  each  form  is  filled  out  completely  and  correctly  to  be  submiHed  during  check-‐in  on  the  first  day  of  camp.

If  you  have  any  ques=ons,  please  do  not  hesitate  to  call  Travis  Barnes  at  818-‐785-‐8700x181.  See  you  at  the  movies!

Sincerely,

Camp  Director  and  Program  Director

Getting  To  CampDriving

Camp  Josepho  is  located  at  3000  Rus=c  Canyon  Rd,  Pacific  Palisades,  CA  90272.

From  Sunset  Boulevard,  turn  north  on  Capri  Drive.  You  will  get  to  a  round-‐about.  Take  it  around  un=l  you  find  Capri  Drive  again,  it  will  be  a  near  straight  con=nua=on.  Stay  on  Capri  Drive  un=l  the  end  and  turn  lea  onto  Casale  Road.  Casale  will  curve  around  the  hill  and  turn  into  a  dirt  road.

Josepho’s  main  road  into  camp  is  considered  a  “Fire  Road”  and  is  open  to  hikers  and  bikers,  as  well  as  the  normal  flow  of  traffic.  Most  areas  of  the  road  are  one-‐lane  and  this  makes  driving  safely  extremely  important.  THE  SPEED  LIMIT  ON  THE  ROAD  IS  5MPH.  Please,  be  aware  of  the  other  traffic  on  the  roads  and  we  suggest  carpooling  to  limit  the  number  of  vehicles  coming  into  camp.  When  confron=ng  another

vehicle  going  the  opposite  direc=on,  be  advised  there  are  narrow  shoulders  to  allow  the  cars  to  pass  but  take  your  =me.  We  will  aHempt  to  limit  this  difficulty  by  assigning  =mes  to  enter  and  exit  camp,  so  please  enter  during  the  assigned  enter  =mes  and  wait  to  leave  un=l  the  assigned  exit  =me  to  reduce  conges=on.  The  enter  ?mes  are  from  12:00pm-‐12:45pm  and  the  exit  ?me  is  1:00pm  on  the  first  day  of  camp.

The  Front  Gate  requires  a  numerical  code  to  allow  access.  This  code  will  be  given  at  the  June  pre-‐camp  leader’s  mee=ng  and  another  reminder  will  be  sent  shortly  before  arriving  to  camp.  Be  sure  to  give  this  code  to  any  drivers  with  your  Troop  who  will  be  aHending.

Parking

In  accordance  with  BSA  policy  and  safety  regula=ons,  PERSONAL  VEHICLES  ARE  NEVER  PERMITTED  IN  CAMP  BEYOND  THE  DESIGNATED  PARKING  AREA.  However,  a  handicap  accessible  pass  will  be  provided  upon  request  at  the  clerk  staff  desk.  The  parking  lot  is  clearly  marked  and  just  inside  the  camp  entrance.  Be  sure  to  always  follow  the  instruc=ons  given  at  camp  while  parking  and  back-‐in  your  vehicle  to  comply  with  the  fire  code.  Only  emergency  and  maintenance  vehicles  will  be  allowed  to  park  outside  of  the  designated  parking  area  and  all  others  will  be  immediately  towed.  The  camp  staff  will  help  haul  gear  to  your  campsite  upon  arrival  to  camp.  This  policy  is  for  the  safety  of  all  campers.  Please  make  sure  parents  who  might  be  visi=ng  camp  during  the  week  are  aware  of  this  important  policy.  We  appreciate  your  coopera=on  in  parking  only  in  designated  areas.

Check-‐In  Procedures

Our  friendly  staff  will  greet  you  as  you  arrive  in  the  parking  lot  and  assist  you  with  the  check-‐in  procedures.  Check-‐in  begins  at  12:00pm  on  the  first  day.  Assemble  your  Troop/group  at  the  parade  grounds.  Please  refrain  from  moving  your  gear  to  your  campsite  un=l  advised  by  the  check-‐in  staff.  One  adult  leader  in  charge  should  proceed  to  the  Admin  Area  to  submit  the  needed  forms  and  any  payments  due.  Any  late  arrivals  should  park  in  the  parking  lot  and  walk  to  the  lodge  for  check-‐in  and  a  camp  ID  bracelet.

Check-‐In  Procedures  (con?nued)

When  checking  in  you  should  have  the  following  items:

Annual  Health  &  Medical  Form  (parts  A,  B  and  C)

  Family  Night  Meal  Reserva?on  Form

  Talent  Release  Form

Parental  Firearms  Permission  and  Release  (Parts  A,  B,  C  and  D)

At  CampProvisional  Scou?ng

The  Boy  Scout  Programs  at  Camp  Josepho  are  unlike  a  tradi=onal  summer  camp  in  that  we  are  not  organized  by  troop.  Scouts  are  welcome  to  aHend  as  patrols,  groups  of  friends,  or  on  their  own.  They  will  be  divided  into  crews  for  their  projects,  but  we  would  like  anyone  who  is  interested  in  aHending  these  programs  to  feel  welcome  to  aHend.

Uniforms

Scouts  should  wear  the  official  Field  Uniform  (Class  A)  during  all  evening  flag  ceremonies  and  dinner.  Scouts  are  encouraged  to  wear  a  Troop  T-‐Shirt  or  Camp  Josepho  Shirt  during  the  remainder  of  the  day,  but  they  are  free  to  wear  whatever  is  comfortable  and  neat.  No  open-‐toed  shoes  are  allowed  in  camp  with  the  excep=on  of  the  pool  area.

Smoking  and  Alcohol

Camp  Josepho  is  a  non-‐smoking  facility.  Smoking  or  tobacco  use  in  front  of  any  camper,  leader,  or  staff  member  is  strictly  prohibited.  Alcoholic  beverages  are  never  permiHed  on  any  Boy  Scout  property.  Please  help  the  camp  enforce  these  rules  by  making  sure  all  leaders  and  parents  in  your  Troop  are  aware  of  this  policy.

Homesickness

While  most  boys  find  themselves  too  busy  with  the  fun  and  adventure  of  camp,  homesickness  can  be  a  reality  for  Scouts  who  are  new  to  the  outdoors  and  unfamiliar  with  being  away  from  home.  We  encourage  every  boy  who  experience  homesickness  to  stay  at  camp,  as  overcoming  homesickness  oaen  results  in  a  strong  sense  of  pride  and  achievement.

We  have  found  that  one  of  the  strongest  proponents  of  homesickness  is  the  cell  phone.  Even  though  cell  phones  do  not  usually  work  at  camp,  Leaders  are  strongly  discouraged  from  allowing  boys  to  use  cell  phones  to  call  home.  When  a  boy  sees  another  boy  calling,  he  will  usually  feel  the  need  to  call  home  himself.  Parents  should  talk  to  their  sons  before  he  comes  to  camp  about  his  feelings  about  leaving  home,  and  make  a  plan  on  how  to  handle  homesickness.

Page  4  of  14

Emergency  Procedures

An  air-‐horn  system  can  be  heard  throughout  camp  to  alert  campers  and  staff  of  an  emergency.  Each  camping  area  has  an  air-‐horn  hanging  near  the  entrance  for  emergency  use  by  adults  only.  In  the  case  of  an  emergency,  staff  is  trained  to  respond  only  to  the  Camp  Director,  or  in  his  absence,  his  designee.  The  en=re  camp  will  par=cipate  in  an  emergency  drill  and  learn  what  to  do  in  the  case  of  a  fire,  earthquake,  or  other  emergency.  We  ask  that  each  adult  leader  knows  where  the  air  horn  is  in  case  of  an  emergency  and  to  adhere  only  to  the  instruc=ons  given  by  the  camp  staff.  If  there  is  an  injury  that  is  not  life  threatening,  do  not  call  911  unless  given  instruc=on  by  the  Camp  Director.

The  emergency  telephone  number  at  Camp  Josepho  is  (310)  459-‐9093.  This  phone  is  staffed  during  program  hours.  Boys  can  make  emergency  outgoing  calls  when  accompanied  by  one  of  their  adult  leaders.  Please  note  that  cell  phones  do  not  generally  work  while  in  camp.

Cabins,  facili?es  and  special  ac?vi?es:

All  scouts  and  leaders  will  be  in  cabins  next  to  or  in  the  second  level  of  the  Malibu  Lodge.  Be  sure  to  bring  a  sleeping  bag  or  sheets  and  a  pillow  as  you  will  be  sleeping  dormitory  style  in  bunks  with  a  provided  maHress.  There  are  restrooms  and  showering  facili=es  at  the  pool  house  and  Lodge  that  will  be  available  for  youth  to  shower  during  posted  =mes  only.  There  are  restrooms  available  in  the  lodge  as  well  as  portable  toilets  throughout  camp.  We  are  happy  to  accommodate  any  special  needs  as  they  arise.

***Prerequisite  for  Communica?ons  merit  badge  comple?on***

AHen=on,  all  scouts  earning  the  Communica=ons  merit  badge!  We  are  unable  to  sa=sfy  requirement:  5)  AHend  a  public  mee=ng  (city  council,  school  board,  debate)  approved  by  your  counselor

where  several  points  of  view  are  given  on  a  single  issue.  Prac=ce  ac=ve  listening  skills  and  take  careful  notes  of  each  point  of  view.  Present  an  objec=ve  report  that  includes  all  points  of  view  that  were  expressed,  and  share  this  with  your  counselor.

If  you  wish  to  earn  the  en=re  communica=ons  merit  badge  in  camp  you  must  come  with  this  requirement  completed  and  include  your  report  to  share  with  the  counselor  at  camp.  If  you  do  not  have  a  report  for  your  counselor  you  will  receive  a  par=al.

Pre-‐Camp  Administra0onMedical  Form

All  campers  and  adults  staying  overnight  must  bring  a  completed  Annual  Health  and  Medical  Form  to  camp.  Note  Parts  A,  B  &  C  are  required  and  must  be  signed  annually  by  a  cer=fied  health-‐care  provider.  Make  a  copy  of  all  medical  forms  for  future  use.  A  parent  or  guardian  must  sign  all  Scouts’  Health  and  Medical  Forms  and  be  dated  within  a  year  prior  to  camp.

Prescrip?on  and  non-‐prescrip?on  medica?on:

Medica=ons,  prescrip=ons  and  non-‐prescrip=ons  brought  to  camp  by  campers  and  leaders  are  REQUIRED  to  be  secured  and  locked  in  the  Camp’s  Health  Lodge,  although  a  day’s  dosage  may  be  carried  by  the  adult  accompanying  the  Scout.  This  may  seem  too  strict  for  over  the  counter  medica=on;  however,  if  a  child  consumes  medica=on  that  is  not  meant  for  them,  it  has  deadly  poten=al.  There  will  be  certain  excep=ons  for  life  saving  medica=ons  to  be  carried  at  camp  (ie.  emergency  inhaler  or  epinephrine  pen)  This  decision  will  be  made  during  the  medical  exam  given  by  our  health  officers.  Medica=ons  will  be  available  for  distribu=on  following  each  meal  or  at  other  =mes  arranged  with  the  health  officer.

MEDICATION  MUST  BE  IN  THE  ORIGINAL  CONTAINER  and  contain  the  following  informa=on:

  2.  Name  of  Prescribing  Physician     5.  Name  of  Medica=on

  3.  Prescrip=on  Number         6.  Direc=ons  for  Use

We  have  a  qualified  medical  staff  that  is  on  duty  at  all  =mes.  A  re-‐check  of  your  medical  form  is  required  for  all  campers  on  the  first  day  of  Summer  Camp.

Special  Diet  Form

Please  only  submit  this  form  if  you  have  a  special  food  allergy  or  dietary  need.  Regular  eaters  need  not  submit.  Please  know  which  session  you  are  registered  to  aHend  before  submirng.

Youth  Protec?on

The  protec=on  and  privacy  of  our  campers  is  taken  very  seriously  at  Camp  Josepho.  All  adult  leaders  and  camp  staff  must  follow  BSA  Youth  Protec=on  guidelines.  Bathroom  facili=es  are  marked  to  denote  separate  youth  and  adult  facili=es.  Youth  should  not  enter  the  adult  facili=es  and  adult  should  not  enter  youth  facili=es.  Similarly,  youth  may  not  bunk  in  the  same  tent  or  cabin  as  an  adult  unless  the  adult  is  their  parent  or  guardian.  You  may  take  Youth  Protec=on  online  at  www.myscou?ng.org  or  by  checking  out  the  DVD  from  the  Anna  Ruggieri  Service  Center.

Visitors,  Late  Arrivals  and  Early  Release

All  campers,  parents,  and  leaders  arriving  at  camp  at  some  =me  other  than  check-‐in  must  register  at  the  Camp  Office  or  with  a  staff  member  and  get  a  camp  ID  bracelet.  It  is  also  important  that  any  leader  being  replaced  checks  out.  We  must  know  who  is  in  camp  at  all  =mes.  Everyone  in  camp  will  be  given  an  ID  bracelet  to  be  worn  at  all  =mes.

All  visitors  must  sign  in  and  sign  out  with  a  camp  staff  member  and  get  a  camp  ID  bracelet.  Any  visitor  who  has  not  registered  may  be  asked  to  leave  camp.  It  is  important  for  safety  that  we  know  who  is  visi=ng  our  camp  and  when.  Visitors  who  intend  to  eat  a  meal  at  camp  must  purchase  a  meal  =cket  at  the  Camp  Office.  Meal  rates  are  as  follows:  Breakfast  -‐  $5;  Lunch  -‐  $6;  Dinner  -‐  $7.

While  we  encourage  every  boy  to  experience  Summer  Camp  in  its  en=rety,  any  child  that  needs  to  be  released  early  must  have  an  “Early  Release  Form”  (found  in  Part  B  of  the  Medical  Form)  filed  at  the  beginning  of  camp.  If  there  is  to  be  an  emergency  release  then  a  parent  or  guardian  must  be  the  person  picking  up  the  child  and  must  show  a  picture  ID.  Any  emergency  release  should  be  made  known  to  the  Camp  Director  as  soon  as  possible  and  before  the  youth  leaves  the  camp.

Last  Day  of  Camp

Family  Night  program  begins  at  5:00pm  on  the  last  evening  of  camp.  Parents  will  arrive  in  =me  to  see  the  camp  in  ac=on  and  will  aHend  the  world  premier  of  the  Scouts’  short  films!  We  encourage  family  to  arrive  between  4:45pm  and  5:30pm  so  we  can  distribute  meal  =ckets  before  our  closing  flag  ceremony.  If  your  family  is  planning  to  eat  supper,  please  complete  the  Family  Night  Meal  Reserva?on  Form  (at  the  end  of  this  packet)  and  turn  it  in  with  the  full  payment  upon  check-‐in  at  camp  on  the  first  day.
