N SW residents are leaving themselves dangerously exposed to opportunistic

summer thieves, with one in four admitting to leaving the front or back door unlocked when they probably shouldn’t, according to research from insurer GIO.

The research also revealed that a third sometimes left windows unlocked, half leave their car keys in a visible or easily accessible place, while 16 per cent have left house keys in obvious places, like under the doormat or pot plant.

This, according to GIO spokes-man Stephen Bell, is worrying behaviour, given summer is a high risk time for opportunistic home break-ins in NSW.

“Summertime is typically a time

of year when residents are more likely to be out and about. It’s also the post Christmas and sales season, when gifts and newly purchased gadgets and goods are left at home, making them especially attractive to thieves,” he said.

Mr Bell warned that it is not just when you go out that you need to be more security conscious.

“Our research shows that for a quarter of those NSW residents who have been the victim of a break in, someone was at home at the time the thieves broke in,” he said.

“We often see cases where people are out the back around the barbie, doing some gardening, or upstairs having an afternoon nap.”

A familiar face is returning to Penrith. Real estate agent Ian Ahearn, born and raised in Penrith, started his property career in Penrith in 1989. Foley has met with representa-tives from business, research and educational institutions in Sydney’s greater west to discuss Labor’s priority to create more smart jobs in the suburbs.

Mr Foley toured Baxter Healthcare, an advanced manufacturer in medical devices, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, based in Old Toongabbie, before sitting down with business leaders to discuss the challenges facing Sydney and possible solutions.

“I won’t pretend that I have all the answers when it comes to solving the congestion challenge facing our city – that’s why I’m sitting down with business lead-ers to hear firsthand the great success stories in our suburbs and what government can do to help create more of them,” Mr Foley said.

He said the next government of NSW has an important role to play in partnering with private enterprise.

Never gets oldVacuuming: Some advice

Empty your vacuum: If you are using a bagless vacuum cleaner, emptying the container that is full of dust and other materials you’ve picked up is very important. Empty it regularly, not just when you notice it’s at its limit. If you do this after each vacuuming session, your next session will start with a big smile!

Do smaller vacuums:

Don’t just do one big cleaning session every now and again. Consider this, do you have 10 minutes every two days to vacuum one room? Do a really good job of it, and move on to another room in two days’ time. This will ensure a regular cleaning cycle and won’t have you doing a major vacuum every couple of weeks.

Clean the filter: People often forget about the filter in their vacuum and leave it too long between cleans. It’s actually important to clean the filter of your vacuum after each clean, to ensure you are getting the best possible results.

Avoid the cheap option: As tempting as it may be, the $50 vacuum cleaner at your local shops is not the best long term solution. Many of us go through five or six of these type of vacuum clean-ers before we bite the bullet and buy a more expensive unit. Trust us, it will be worth it in the long run and the results are much better.

PRDnationwide’s research team are confi dent that 2015 will be great for Penrith – and they’re not the only ones. A combination of improving infrastructure and rising prices in inner suburbs means the property market will continue to grow while elsewhere in Sydney things stagnate.

Interviewed for The Daily Telegraph, Harrison Hall, Research Analyst for PRDnationwide said “In some cases we’ve seen nearly 30 per cent price growth in inner city suburbs over the last two years and this will drive buyers into cheaper markets where amenities are improving.”

Onthehouse data also confi rmed that strong Western Sydney regions also include affordable Penrith suburbs that offer good rental returns for investors, Sydney’s most active buyers.

Large infrastructure projects, including new and improved transport links, are also going to be a contributing factor to the expected growth. From the knock on effects of the planned airport at Badgerys Creek through to the proposed M9 - or Western Sydney Orbital - the whole area will continue to attract new businesses and residents.
