Local agents take home top honours

T wo staff members at Raine and Horne St Marys have been recog-nised for their excel-

lence, on the national stage. At the annual Raine and Horne

National Awards, held on Tues-day, August 19, Tom Turner and Peter Diamantidis were awarded for their success in the industry.

In what they describe as a win for the area, both employees were recognised as among the top representatives, in their respec-tive fi elds, of all Raine and Horne franchises in the country.

Mr Turner topped the state in his fi eld when he was named the NSW

Raine and Horne St Marys put their success down to a great reputation within the com-munity, which has been strong for more than four decades

Outstanding Property Manager of the Year, 2014.

“We weren’t actually planning on attending the award ceremony but we got a heads-up a week beforehand. I wasn’t sure what it was for so it was a great surprise,” Mr Turner said.

Now regarded as one of the best Raine and Horne salespersons in the country, Mr Diamantidis took out two awards in the category ‘Top Salesperson’.

He ranked sixth in the country for total sales and ninth in the country for the overall dollar value of sales.

The awards are indicative of the

booming property market seen in western Sydney at the moment but Mr Turner attributes the success of the Raine and Horne St Marys staff to the business’ strong and long-standing relationship with the community.

“We have been in the area for the last 41 years and more than anything, this is the reason for our success,” he said.

T he Property Council of Australia NSW branch has welcomed the move by the Shooters and

Fishers Party in the Legislative Council to introduce a reform to local government elections in the City of Sydney.

The Shooters and Fishers want to adopt the City of Melbourne model of local elections where businesses do not have to apply to vote in a local government elec-tion but rather have a permanent non-residential voting role.

“For the Shooters and Fishers Party, this comes down to a matter of fairness. Businesses contribute 78 per cent of all revenue within the City of Sydney Council area, however because of endless paperwork and red tape

– approved by Clover Moore and the previous Labor Government – only a handful of businesses bother to vote. We want to make it easier for those businesses who contribute the majority of the Council revenue to have their say on the future direction of our largest city,” Shooters Party MLC Robert Borsak said.

A spokesperson for the Property Council said: “Property Council welcomes the NSW Government’s announcement that it will reform business voting in local govern-ment elections, following our campaign to restore the franchise to property owners”.

“The Government has listened to the voice of businesses in Sydney and other commercial centres, recognising that they contribute an enormous share of the rates base and underpin the economic prosperity, vibrancy and appeal of our cities.”

The Property Council said the creation of a permanent electoral roll for commercial property owners and businesses fulfi ls a basic democratic principle.

“The same problem occurs elsewhere and the same policy solution should be implemented across all local government areas.”

It’s Spring!

S pring is only a few days away and while many of us welcome the change of season for those that

have allergies the start of Spring can bring on a sense of dread. The coughing, sneezing and wheezing that hayfever and allergies bring can be more than a little frustrat-ing. But in regards to your outdoor areas there is hope. To help keep your home as allergy free as possi-ble, Masters Home Improvement’s Greenlife Buyer Ann McKeon has some tips that you can use in the garden to minimise the chance of a reaction.

Certain plant varieties like wattles, daisies and ornamental grasses can spell trouble for those with allergies. Any plant variety that has airborne pollen should be avoided. The trick to creating an allergy friendly garden is to fi ll it with plants which are free of pollen, such as succulents, or to choose varieties that only transfer pollen through birds, like

Petunias, Geraniums, Dianthus, Impatiens, Hydrangeas and Grevilleas.

Lawns can also be a trigger for those with allergies, especially types that contain fi ne seeds. The trick is to seek out varieties that are seedless, like Sir Walter seedless buff alo. Overgrown lawn can also be a trigger for allergy symptoms so it’s important to ensure that you are mowing regu-larly and that the lawn is slightly moistened when you do so.

The fi nal thing to consider when creating an allergy free garden is

mulch. Choosing large chunky bark mulches, which won’t break down as quickly as other mulches, will help to minimise irritants in the air. Another trick is to ensure the mulch, and your garden in general, is kept moist to further reduce dust transmission.

With these tips those that suff er from hayfever and allergic reactions can enjoy their beauti-ful garden while lowering the chances of suff ering from nasty symptoms.

Keep your carpets clean

Stains will reappear: If you don’t treat a stain right, it will come back again before you know it. To avoid this, place a cloth over the stain and put something heavy over the top, and leave it overnight. This will allow the cloth to fully absorb the stain.

Careful when cleaning: Don’t just rub carelessly when trying to get rid of a stain. Be as careful as you can otherwise you may spread the stain.

Vacuum often: Make sure you don’t just vacuum when it’s obvious your carpet needs it. Set yourself a regular interval between vacuuming so your carpet cleaning is consistent. Once a week should do the job, but if you have pets, perhaps twice a week is the way to go.

Steam clean: No matter how well you take care of your carpet, make sure you get your carpets profession-ally cleaned at least once a year. You can also buy carpet shampoo machines and do the job yourself between professional cleans.
